1,500 Kaduna women benefit from cash empowerment to boost businesses

No fewer than 1,500 women in Kaduna have received cash support under an empowerment initiative designed to grow their businesses and promote economic prosperity.

The beneficiaries, selected from various wards in Kaduna North Local Government Area and its environs, benefitted through Kowa Namu Ne, a foundation established by the Chairman of the APC Stakeholders Forum in the state, AbdulAzeez Kaka.

Speaking during the distribution, Kaka said the initiative was motivated by his commitment to complement President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda on poverty reduction, as well as Governor Uba Sani’s SUSTAIN Agenda, which places wealth creation and support for small-scale entrepreneurs—particularly women—at the centre of development efforts.

He disclosed that more than 5,000 individuals had so far benefitted from the empowerment drive and other programmes under his foundation, all designed to strengthen the socio-economic fabric of citizens across the state.

According to him, empowering women—who he described as the bedrock of every family—would enable them to cater for the medical, educational, and social needs of their dependents without over-relying on government.

Kaka praised President Tinubu and Governor Sani for their commitment to increasing agricultural productivity, supporting small businesses, and promoting youth and women empowerment.

He expressed confidence that the reforms being undertaken by the two leaders would soon yield visible benefits for both present and future generations.

He further urged elected and appointed officials, as well as corporate organisations, to support empowerment initiatives as a way of tackling unemployment and reducing the spread of social vices.

“When we invest in our youth, we reduce unemployment; when we empower women, we strengthen our homes; and when we create opportunities, we close the doors of crime and open the gates of prosperity,” he said.

  • Kaduna By-election records low voter turnout

Kaduna By-election records low voter turnout

The by-election for the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State on Saturday was characterised by low voter turnout across several polling units.

At Polling Unit 027, Narayi Extension Ward in Chikun Local Government, electoral officials arrived as early as 8:20am. But more than an hour later, no voter had turned up to cast a ballot.

When our correspondent visited, only one prospective voter, Mava Jesse, was waiting for accreditation. The BVAS machine, however, was yet to respond.

Jesse attributed the poor turnout to inadequate voter mobilisation and the experience of the last local government elections, which he said discouraged many from participating.

Another voter, Samson Koro, blamed the situation on poor awareness by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

She, however, expressed optimism that more people would still come out before the close of polls.

Across other polling centres in the constituency, a similar pattern was observed, with officials idling away while waiting for voters.

Observers noted that the eventual outcome of the by-election would depend on whether voter turnout improved as the exercise progressed.

The Chikun/Kajuru seat became vacant following the nullification of the election of the former lawmaker by the courts, prompting Saturday’s by-election.

INEC had earlier assured residents of adequate logistics and security to ensure a smooth, credible process.

  • How Kaduna is building a model of inclusive governance

How Kaduna is building a model of inclusive governance

    By Ben Kure

Kaduna State has entered a new era of peace, progress and people-focused governance under the leadership of His Excellency Senator Uba Sani (CON). The Governor’s administration marks a sharp and welcome departure from the insecurity, divisive politics, and harsh policies of the past. For eight years, residents endured widespread kidnappings and violent attacks in communities such as Birnin Gwari, Giwa, Kauru, Kaura and Zangon Kataf, along with mass teacher sackings, steep tuition hikes, unpaid pensions, and strained relations with workers. During those years, Kaduna’s name in the news often meant tragedy.

Governor Sani, a seasoned pro-democracy activist who stood alongside icons like Gani Fawehinmi, Dr. Beko Ransom-Kuti, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has restored governance rooted in compassion, dialogue and inclusion. He has reversed anti-people policies, reconnected with elders and stakeholders, and opened the doors of government to every citizen. The fear of arbitrary demolitions, job losses and policy shocks has been replaced with hope, stability and trust. Governor Sani has also restored dignity to Kaduna State’s traditional institutions, recognising their vital roles as custodians of culture and traditions and as leaders closest to the people. This renewed respect has empowered them to promote peaceful coexistence across the state.

He has actively engaged religious leaders, urging them to pray for the people and provide moral guidance that shapes attitudes, refines the minds of young people, and fosters unity. Under his leadership, citizens are encouraged to embrace their faith and ethical values, live in love for the state and the nation, reject destructive paths, and commit to personal and collective growth. In a decisive gesture of justice and reconciliation, some traditional leaders who were wrongly and maliciously dethroned in the past have been restored to their thrones, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fairness and respect for heritage.

Inheriting over N80 billion in domestic debt and $550 million in foreign loans, the Governor acted decisively. Kaduna is now ranked among Nigeria’s top four states in attracting foreign direct investment, thanks to strategic partnerships with global development agencies. The administration has provided free housing to victims of insurgency, commissioned 100 CNG buses offering free transport to civil servants, students and the public, and distributed over 900 truckloads of fertilizer, tractors and irrigation equipment to farmers—all at no cost.

Governor Sani reversed tuition hikes at Kaduna State University, saving thousands of students from dropping out. In healthcare, 255 primary health centres across all wards are being upgraded, 14 general hospitals renovated, and the long-delayed 300-bed Specialist Hospital initiated by former Governor and Vice President Architect Namadi Sambo (GCON) has been completed and commissioned. On infrastructure, more than 80 rural roads totaling 800km are under construction, with 30 already commissioned, boosting trade and access to markets. Land injustices are being corrected, and rightful owners compensated. At the state’s two-year anniversary, President Tinubu (GCFR) hailed the administration as a “government that cares,” contrasting it with what he described as a “toxic” past government. Security has greatly improved, thanks to coordinated efforts between the Governor, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher G. Musa, and all security agencies.

To address diverse needs, the administration has established the Ministry of Youth Development, revived the Ministry of Information, and created the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. These reforms aim to better serve Kaduna’s 10 million residents and strengthen community engagement. With a continued focus on security, economic growth, infrastructure, and human development, Governor Sani’s vision is clear: a Kaduna State that will be a model for Nigeria, where business thrives, education and healthcare are accessible, and citizens live in safety and dignity.

Through strengthened community policing and a revamped security architecture, Kaduna has witnessed a sharp decline in bandit attacks and kidnappings—restoring safety and investor confidence across the state. Governor Sani’s commitment to governance reforms has birthed a more transparent, accountable system, with power increasingly devolved to local authorities for greater grassroots impact. Strategic partnerships are breathing new life into agriculture and small-scale enterprises, while expanded skills training and youth employment programmes are equipping the next generation. Public schools and health centres—long neglected—are being transformed, alongside targeted welfare initiatives for women, children and the vulnerable. With these sweeping reforms, Kaduna is no longer defined by fear or uncertainty. It is safer, stronger and steadily rising—proof that under Governor Sani, leadership is not about promises, but performance. Kaduna State is truly in safe and secure hands.

Police refute fatality claims as fuel tankers explode in Zaria

The Kaduna State Police Command has dismissed reports of multiple fatalities in Monday’s tanker explosion at Dan Magaji, Zaria, insisting no lives were lost in the incident.

The crash, which occurred around 8:30 am near the Rochas Foundation School along the Kaduna–Kano expressway bypass between Kwangila and Dan Magaji, involved two fuel-laden tankers and at least one Volkswagen Golf car.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said, “As at this moment, no death has been recorded. All the affected victims are in the hospital.” He noted that emergency responders promptly evacuated the injured to nearby medical facilities.

His statement contradicts earlier reports, including one by security analyst Zagazola Makama on X (formerly Twitter), which claimed that several people were killed after the impact triggered at least five explosions, sending flames and thick black smoke into the air and cutting off traffic on the busy highway.

Some eyewitnesses also alleged that all occupants of the affected Golf cars died instantly, except one driver who sustained severe burns.

Another source said four people were injured, blaming the crash on a tanker allegedly travelling against traffic and ramming into a parked Golf car.

Emergency services and security operatives cordoned off the scene, diverted motorists to alternative routes and battled to contain the inferno as rescue and recovery operations continued.

The police have assured that investigations are underway to establish the exact cause of the crash and reconcile conflicting casualty figures.

The Nation, however, gathered that four persons injured from the accident have been taken to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, Zaria.

FG, Kuwait Fund sign $25.35m loan deal to tackle out-of-school crisis in Kaduna

The Federal Government has signed a $25.35 million concessionary loan agreement with the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development to support a comprehensive initiative aimed at bringing out-of-school children back into classrooms in Kaduna State

The financing forms part of a broader $62.8 million package secured from international development partners to boost access to inclusive and quality education in one of Nigeria’s most affected regions.

The agreement, signed on behalf of Kaduna State, is designed to address critical educational gaps by constructing new schools, rehabilitating existing facilities, training teachers, and implementing community-based interventions to remove barriers to education—especially for girls, children with disabilities, and internally displaced children.

Other financial contributors to the programme include the Islamic Development Bank (US$10.5 million), the Global Partnership for Education (US$15.45 million grant), Education Above All Foundation (US$10 million grant), Save the Children International (US$0.5 million technical assistance grant), and the Kaduna State Government (US$1 million in counterpart funding).

A statement from the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday in Abuja said: “The Federal Ministry of Finance will manage oversight of fiduciary processes and result reporting, working closely with Kaduna State and participating partners to monitor enrolment, teacher training, and student performance. The goal is to ensure that every dollar spent delivers tangible outcomes in learning and school attendance.”

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, said the programme reflects the country’s resolve to ensure social investments are driven by transparency, accountability, and measurable impact. Edun was represented by the Minister of State for Finance, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite.

“This partnership is about compassion, equity and the power of education. With millions of children still out of school, especially in the North, every dollar must translate into real change for the children and communities we serve. Kaduna State’s leadership and the strong engagement of our development partners give us confidence that this initiative will become a model for other states,” Edun stated.

Director-General of the Kuwait Fund, Dr Wahid Al-Bahar, described the initiative as an investment in the future. “This is more than infrastructure. By enrolling over 100,000 children, building or upgrading more than 200 schools, and empowering thousands of teachers, we are helping to ensure that no child is left behind. The Kuwait Fund is proud to support this effort and looks forward to deepening our cooperation with Nigeria,” he said.

Kaduna  Governor, Senator Uba Sani, reiterated the state’s commitment to using education as a transformative tool. He disclosed that Kaduna has already provided its full counterpart contribution and is increasing the education allocation in its 2025 budget to 26 percent.

The programme targets hard-to-reach communities and aims to reintegrate children into safe and inclusive learning environments. In addition to infrastructure, the initiative will invest in teacher development to improve classroom delivery and learning outcomes, while community-based models will be deployed to boost enrolment and school completion rates.

The statement from the Federal Ministry of Finance described the partnership as a major step forward in Nigeria’s push to transform its education system and reach some of its most vulnerable children.

“With the combined efforts of the Federal Government, Kaduna State, and international partners, Nigeria is set to create a brighter future for its next generation,” the ministry said.

  • Understanding Kaduna’s changing security situation

    Understanding Kaduna’s changing security situation

    • By Murtala Musa

When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Kaduna State to commission the numerous projects executed in just over two years by Governor Uba Sani, even he couldn’t help but marvel at the dramatic transformation. Mr. President confessed that the Kaduna State he had visited before the 2023 general election was markedly different from the one he stepped into during his recent visit. It was clear, even to the president, that something fundamental had shifted.

While addressing the gathering after commissioning the projects, President Tinubu didn’t mince words about the new face of Kaduna. He acknowledged the peace and security gains under Uba Sani’s watch, stating:  “What I see here today gives me hope—not just for Kaduna, but for Nigeria at large. Kaduna is now a shining example of how peace and security can unlock development. From Birnin Gwari to Southern Kaduna, the progress is visible, and the peace is refreshing.”

Indeed, from Kaduna metropolis to Birnin Gwari, there’s a new sense of calm. The road to Birnin Gwari, especially, once nicknamed “the road of death,” is no longer dreaded. That route has been transformed into a corridor of peace, where travellers now journey without fear or the ominous shadow of violence looming over them. I believe it was this remarkable turnaround has wowed the president and left many surprised. Yet, this newfound calm isn’t just about security patrols or military checkpoints; it’s a reflection of deliberate, people-centred leadership.

Where his predecessor thrived on grandstanding and peacock posturing, Uba Sani embraced humility, collaboration and practical governance. He swapped political theatrics for quiet efficiency, and the results are speaking louder than words.

One of Uba Sani’s most effective strategies has been his outreach to traditional rulers, those grassroots influencers whose voices resonate within their communities. Rather than side-lining them as mere ceremonial figures, Uba Sani brought them to the decision-making table. Their ideas, concerns, and wisdom are now integral to governance. This synergy has birthed a new Kaduna State, one that even President Tinubu couldn’t ignore.

    But it doesn’t end there.

For many years, Kaduna was a theatre of religious and ethnic hostilities, with tensions simmering just beneath the surface. The fractures were deep, and opportunists exploited these divides to unleash violence and instability. However, under Uba Sani’s leadership, these cracks are slowly but surely healing.

Through open dialogue, sincere engagement, and deliberate policies that promote inclusion, the seeds of unity are being planted afresh. Interfaith forums, youth peace initiatives, and community reconciliations have become regular features in Kaduna’s evolving story. The old narratives of suspicion and discord are gradually giving way to new tales of cooperation and mutual respect.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Governor Uba Sani’s tenure isn’t just the peace returning to Kaduna’s streets and villages; it is the sense of fairness and equity that permeates his administration. His commitment to equitable development has been unmatched in the recent history of the state.

Every corner of Kaduna, whether in the north, south, or central zones, has felt the impact of governance. From road constructions to water projects, from health facilities to educational interventions, no part of the state has been left behind. This deliberate spread of developmental projects has not only boosted economic activities across Kaduna but also doused long-held grievances of marginalisation.

It is this fair and just leadership that has rendered troublemakers jobless. With every community having a stake in the Kaduna project, there are fewer opportunities for those who thrive on division to find relevance.

Interestingly, Uba Sani’s style of leadership has defied the usual political playbook. He is not one for endless media drama or seeking applause for every single effort. His approach has been simple: identify problems, consult widely, act decisively, and monitor implementation. It is this methodical yet unassuming approach that has yielded the results Kaduna State now enjoys.

What makes his story even more compelling is that Uba Sani never pretended that the state’s problems could vanish overnight. He didn’t arrive with unrealistic promises or magic solutions. Instead, he rolled up his sleeves and got to work, acknowledging the enormity of the challenges but remaining undeterred.

From tackling the age-long farmers-herders clashes in Kajuru and Kachia, to restoring water supply in Zaria, to reopening schools in crisis-prone areas, Uba Sani has approached every issue with courage, clarity, and a deep sense of responsibility.

He may not have solved every problem, and perhaps he never will, but no honest observer can accuse him of not trying. His efforts, grounded in sincerity and strategic thinking, have earned him growing respect, not just within Kaduna but also across Nigeria’s political landscape.

So, when the story of Uba Sani is told in the years to come, it will not just be the story of a governor who built roads, schools, and hospitals. It will be the story of a man who dared to change the narrative. A leader who didn’t deny the existence of problems but accepted them as challenges to be tackled head-on. A man who didn’t rely on empty rhetoric but chose collaboration, fairness, and persistence to drive his agenda.

In many ways, what is unfolding in Kaduna under Uba Sani’s stewardship is nothing short of a quiet revolution, one built on peace, anchored in progress, and powered by the collective will of the people.

Thanks to Uba Sani, Kaduna today, is no longer a symbol of division, violence, and despair. It is gradually emerging as an intersection of peace, hope, and inclusive development. It has become a state where everyone, regardless of tribe, faith, or political leaning, feels seen, heard, and carried along.

And to borrow President Tinubu’s words, “Kaduna today gives hope for Nigeria.”

Northern leaders meet in Kaduna, push for region’s unity, security, economic revival

Leaders from the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory on Saturday converged in Kaduna to chart a new roadmap for the region’s unity, institutional strength, and economic resurgence.

At the Unity and Development Summit held at Arewa House, former Zamfara state governor and Senator, Abdulaziz Yari, who chaired the gathering, urged leaders, elders, and youths across the north to close ranks and pursue a common vision anchored on peace, strong traditional institutions, inclusive education, and economic resilience.

“This gathering is not just another event; it is a call to action for all stakeholders in Northern Nigeria to forge a new path anchored on unity, development, and economic resilience,” Yari declared.

He warned that insecurity, youth unemployment and decaying infrastructure continued to undermine the region’s promise but insisted these challenges could be defeated through dialogue and a commitment to shared prosperity.

Themed: “Strengthening Traditional Institutions, Education, Security, and Economic Resilience for a Brighter Northern Nigeria,” the summit was hosted by Arewa 100% Focus, a youth-led development platform, in collaboration with the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF).

Yari stressed the need for economic self-reliance, saying: “It is only by strengthening our local industries, empowering our youth, harnessing our agricultural wealth and investing in education that Northern Nigeria can stand tall—not as a recipient of aid but as a hub of productivity and innovation.”

He also called on youths across the region to embrace education, innovation and discipline, adding that even the smallest efforts would help shape a better future for the North.

Earlier, Convener of Arewa 100% Focus, Hon. Abubakar Sadiq Fakai, recounted how the initiative grew from humble beginnings into a broad movement seeking to transform the region.

“Our vision is to build a vibrant, united Northern Nigeria rooted in culture, purpose, and opportunity,” he said. “We aim to reorient the mindset of our youth, strengthen traditional leadership, expand access to education, tackle insecurity, and drive grassroots economic transformation.”

Fakai outlined the group’s ongoing interventions, including youth mentorship, skills training, enterprise promotion, grassroots stakeholder mobilisation and dialogues to resolve disputes around traditional leadership.

He revealed that over 100 delegates had already gathered under their platform at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja—a testament, he said, that “our people are ready to take charge of their future.”

Looking ahead, Fakai announced fresh initiatives including the Arewa Unity Cup across all 19 states and the FCT, state-level summits and training hubs, school mentorship schemes and quarterly community peace and security dialogues.

He appealed for more than just financial backing, highlighting the need for technical expertise, stronger visibility and credible partnerships.

Fakai also lauded the ACF for “demonstrating the true spirit of Northern Nigeria by opening up their space for us to engage.”

“Let this summit mark our shift from conversations to measurable impact. Northern Nigeria has the talent, wisdom, and will. What we need now is a collective commitment to make change inevitable,” he urged.

The summit ended with participants pledging to deepen dialogue, broaden collaborations, and pursue a united, secure, and economically vibrant North within a stronger Nigeria.

  • Kaduna leads North in IGR– KADIRSi

Kaduna leads North in IGR– KADIRSi

Kaduna State has been the leading Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) performing subnational amongst the 19 northern states in the last two years, owing to Governor Uba Sani’s tax reforms.

The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) which disclosed this in a statement on Friday, was reacting to the claim that suggests a decline in IGR under the present administration.

”As a validation of the reforms in the revenue sector of the state under Governor Uba Sani, in 2023 and 2024, Kaduna State collected IGR of ₦62.48 billion and ₦71 billion respectively, consolidating its place as the leading IGR performing state in northern Nigeria in the last two  years.

”Furthermore, in the months of January and February 2025, Kaduna State has already collected an IGR of ₦7.46 billion and ₦6.68 billion respectively, bringing the total revenue collected in two months to ₦14.16 billion,” the statement disclosed.

The statement, which was signed by the Head of Corporate Communication, Malam Zakari Jamilu Muhammad, noted that records of states IGR collections are in the public domain.

Zakari said Governor Uba Sani has introduced a series of  reforms that have improved tax collection and made tax payment easy, including “an integrated tax administration portal (PAYKADUNA), financial inclusion initiatives, enhanced taxpayers and stakeholders’ engagement.”

According to the statement, KADIRS has also deployed “the first-of-its-kind interactive voice response system for taxpayer complains redressal among several initiatives that have resulted in improved tax administration in the state.”

The Head of Corporate Communication further expatiated on the current automation process of tax collection, explaining that ”payments are made through the PAYKADUNA portal or via pay direct channels from which they are swept directly into the State’s Treasury Single Accounts.”

According to the statement, this process ensures that staff of the Service have no access or interaction with tax collections.

The IGR account is a collection and transit account and not  an expenditure account, therefore, it is highly inaccurate to think that any amounts can be withdrawn from it to service any interests,” it explained.

The statement noted that ”the current level of IGR collection of the state speaks to the competence of the chairman, the management team of the Service and the support they enjoy from the state to function as a professional and apolitical revenue authority of the state.”

Malam Zakari also debunked the rumour that the former Executive Chairman was removed for calling out the Speaker for refusing to pay taxes, explaining that he had served ”his entire four-year tenure as provided in the Kaduna State Tax Codification and Consolidation Law, after which a new Executive Chairman was appointed by the Executive Governor.”

The statement further said that KADIRS has never  received any instructions to facilitate the payment of  N100 million, or any payment  for that matter, to either an  individual or organisation.
