  • Bandits on revenge mission kill 11 soldiers in Kaduna

    ….El-Rufai condoles military

    ….as Army keeps mum

No fewer than 11 soldiers who have been on special operation tagged ‘Operation Cat Race’ in Birnin Gwari local government area of Kaduna State were reported to have lost their lives Tuesday night when scores of bandits attacked them to avenge the killing of their leader, Buhari Tsoho, popularly called Buharin Daji who was killed in shoot out with security men in Zamfara state two weeks ago, source said.

Though, the army was yet to comment on the incident as at press time, Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai of Kaduna condoled families of security personnel that lost their lives in the course of repelling the bandits.

The bloody attack, which occurred at a village called Kampanin Doka in the local government area happened at a time the federal government was trying to secure lives and property of road users who have been falling victims of armed robbery and kidnapping in that axis of Kaduna interstate road recently.

A source who pleaded anonymity said, the bandits attacked the soldier’s camp between 8pm and 9pm on Tuesday killing three soldiers in a hole and nine others in the camp making the casualties 12.

“We gathered that the soldiers had caught a thief in a village called Maganda in the area and were taking him back to their camp when some personnel of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) asked them to hand over the thief to them which the soldiers refused.

“The same police followed the soldiers to their camp in Kampanin Doka and again asked them to hand over the thief to them, but the soldiers still refused. Around 8pm on Tuesday, bandits attacked the soldier’s camp and killed three soldiers in a hole and nine others in a tent in the camp.

“Members of the community kept calling us when the attack was taking place, but there was nothing we could do since we don’t have any weapons, all we did was to alert the emir and other security personnel with the hope that they could come to their aid.”

Another top source who witnessed the attack confirmed that, he saw 11 bodies after the attack.

This source however hinted that, men of Nigerian Army were still waiting for directive on the next line of action from Army authority as at the time of filing this report.

Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna, Colonel Muhammad Dole when contacted said he was working on the Army’s press release on the incident.

However, a social message by a community based organisation known as Birnin Gwari Vanguard for Security and Good Governance partly corroborated the earlier sources.

“A military detachment and members of the vigilante in Doka village has successfully repelled an attack by armed bandits numbering about 120 on a motorcycles around 10.05pm on Tuesday night.

“The attackers had earlier attacked  Maganda District on Monday on a revenged mission over the killing of Buhari Tsoho a. k. a Buharin Daji. Nine people critically injured at Maganda, mostly Vigilante group.

“After Maganda, the Armed bandits moved toward Kampanin Doka at the junction road leading to Gwaska and Dansadau. But gallant soldiers and brave youths of Doka successfully repelled the attack. Many casualties on the side of the bandits recorded and they escaped with the wounded.

“Although we had informed the Kaduna State government on the attack three days ago and the military, government officials dismissed our credible information by not taken appropriate action to forestall the attacks by armed bandit.

“Once more, we the people of Birnin-Gwari are under siege and in need of protection of the government. Our youth and volunteers are ready to assist security agencies to confront armed bandits in our territory.

“We will remain vigilant and await government of Mall. Nasiru Ahmed El-Rufai response to this security challenges in Birnin-Gwari local government”, the message read.

Meanwhile, Governor El-Rufai called for sustained collaboration between communities and security forces to overcome banditry. The governor said this in a message to the people of Birnin Gwari local government following attacks by bandits.

El-Rufai said he received with sadness reports of bandit attacks in Doka and Magandavillages. He praised the communities for their vigilance and their collaboration with the military to thwart the attacks. The governor said the state regrets the loss of lives and offered his condolence to the communities and the military over the incident.

The governor also condoled families of security personnel that lost their lives in the course of repelling the bandits, he also wished civilians that sustained injuries speedy recovery.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Samuel Aruwan, Governor El-Rufai said that the government is monitoring developments in Birnin Gwari local government.

He reiterated the firm resolve of the government to overcome rural banditry, with the support of communities and the assistance of security assets provided by the Federal Government. The statement disclosed that sustained vigilance by communities and the information they provide are very crucial to assisting the security agencies.

He reiterated that the government threats every security information with the utmost agency, as it discharges its obligation to protect lives and property.

  • Kaduna secondary school teachers to write competence test soon – El-Rufai

Governor Nasir el-Rufa’i of Kaduna state has disclosed that Competency tests for secondary school teachers will soon be conducted across the state to separate the incompetent ones from those that are competent.

Kaduna state government conducted similar test for the over 30,000 primary school teachers in the state last year, following which 21,780 that failed to obtain 70% pass mark were sacked and replaced with newly recruited 25,000 teachers.

Speaking on Sunday on his twitter handle, @GovKaduna, monitored in Kaduna, el-Rufai noted that the state is committed to restoring the integrity of the teaching profession.

He also revealed that the state government has decided to pay urban teachers in the state 27.5% higher than average civil servants, while rural teachers will earn 32.5% higher than their other civil service colleagues to attract the best to the teaching profession.

“We are doing our best to restore the integrity of the teaching profession. We have finished tests for primary school teachers and we are going to administer competency tests for secondary school teachers.”

The competency test for primary school teachers and subsequent sack of those that failed the test caused lot of brouhaha with the Nigeria Union of Teachers ( NUT ) and the umbrella body for workers, Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC ) taking umbrage at what they referred to as unfair treatment of teachers.

Despite the unions embarking on protest after which they took legal action, the state government stuck by its gun and followed through with its decision. This latest step, if taken, may cause further uproar in the state.

  • Agriculture: Kaduna targets 10,000 youth, releases 50,000 fertiliser

The Kaduna State Government says 10,000 young farmers in the state would be empowered to boost production in Maize, Rice, Soybeans and Poultry in the 2018 crop season.

Gov Nasiru El-Rufai made the disclosure in a message to the flag-off of the 2018 fertilizer sales, held on Thursday in Turunku, Igabi Local Government area.

The Newsmen reports that the state in partnership with Flour Mills of Nigeria and TAK Agricultural Solution would offer 50,000 metric tons of NPK fertiliser to farmers at  N5, 500 per bag this season.

El-Rufai represented was at the event by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Forestry, Daniel Manzo-Maigari.

“The state is collaborating with Central Bank of Nigeria ( CBN ) in the implementation of Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme, where more than 10,000 farmers mostly youth are targeted to be empowered in production of maize, rice, soybeans and poultry.

“The state is also working closely with multinational agencies and the private partners such as DFID,  Synergos,FAO, OCP Africa,  GIZ,  USAID, TAK Agro,  and WACOT to revolutionize agriculture  in the state,” he said.

El-Rufai noted that although the state has comparative advantage in agriculture, the sector had been neglected with very little or no investment, especially in the provision of vital inputs to farmers.

“The present government has made the issue of providing quality and affordable inputs to the state farmers a top priority.

“The subsector is dominated mostly by wet season farming and some irrigation based production.

“Most farmers currently produce cereal crops such as maize, sorghum, millet and rice during the rainy season.

“Also not in doubt is the fact that Kaduna state is the largest producer of maize, ginger and tomato in Nigeria, exporting substantial quantities to other states.

“Therefore any intervention aimed at enhancing production and to arrest post harvest losses will ultimately increase farmers’ productivity and income,” the governor said.

According to him, the government would continue to facilitate availability and accessibility of fertilizer across the state.

“The state government will continue to support the growth of the agricultural sector which is the mainstay of our economy through the provision of inputs such as fertilizer, improved seeds, agrochemicals and machineries.’’

He disclosed that the state Fertilizer Blending Plant set up in collaboration with OCP Africa, a Moroccan company, will be inaugurated on May 1.

The governor said his administration had established a 350km shelter belt across five local governments of Ikara, Makarfi, Kudan, Giwa and Birnin Gwari to arrest desertification.

He assured farmers of adequate security during the farming season, as of recent the farmers were forced to abandon their farms due to incessant kidnapping.

Earlier, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Aminu Shagali, represented by the Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture, Kasimu Iliyasawa said the committee would monitor the fertiliser sales in their constituencies to ensure that the commodity gets to actual farmers.

The speaker urged administrators of local councils to ensure that the fertiliser get to farmers in good time.

  • State governments, agencies urged to tackle flooding

State governments, agencies urged to tackle flooding

Nigerians and government have been urged to prepare for the next rainy season to mitigate the impact of flooding.

The YMonitor, an affiliate platform under the umbrella of The Future Project interested in active citizenship and responsible government – is championing the campaign to call both citizens and government to action on this issue.

The firm believes that flood is devastating, and it could get worse if nothing is done before the rains come.

Recall that over 110,000 people in 24 communities were displaced by flood in Benue last year, with 10,000 Nigerians affected in Kogi State, while there were also loss of lives and properties in Borno, Niger, Oyo, Gombe, and Kaduna states. Almost every part of the country was affected.

In Lagos, highbrow locations such as Lekki, Victoria Island and more were most affected, as residents were seen paddling through the streets, cars completely submerged, and houses overrun by water.

Flood-prone states have a lot to do, but many of the states have abandoned their master plans, with citizens erecting structures illegally. Before the rains come, it is important that states rise up to their responsibility.

This remains a global experience, not peculiar to Nigeria, but it cannot be disputed that enough has not been done to check flooding in Nigeria.

The seasons are changing and becoming unpredictable, and when the rains come, they pour like a sea of water while the sun burns deep into the skin. Climate change is constantly treated with levity, yet it is not too late to be addressed.

State governments have therefore been urged to re-visit their master plans and make amends where necessary. They should also partner with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to disseminate information on weather situations and flash points. There is also a need for more enlightenment programs on the cause and effect of flooding with data to aid understanding.

Citizens are also encouraged to quit blaming the government and take responsibility for their environment. It is our collective duty to create and maintain a sustainable environment.

Obviously, the rains we cannot prevent, but we can manage the flood. We must take action before the rains come.

  • Kaduna crisis: Senate warns against religious conflicts

Kaduna crisis: Senate warns against religious conflicts

The Senate Tuesday asked Nigerians to learn to live in peace and harmony with one another in the interest of the country.

The upper chamber said that Nigerians should avoid all forms of violence especially those that have religious colouration.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, gave the advice following a Point of Order raised by Senator Shehu Sani on the violence that erupted in Kaduna State on Monday.

Reports had it that about nine persons died on Monday in a clash between Christians and Muslim youths in Kasuwan Magani Kajuru Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

Ekweremadu after listening to Sani’s lamentation over increasing spate of violence in parts of the country warned that religious conflict could be the fasted means to liquidate the country if not avoided.

Ekweremadu said, “This is one incident too many, killings in all parts of Nigeria. This is becoming very worrisome. What is even more worrying is the religious colouration to the killings, based on what Senator Shehu Sani has said. This is something we need to avoid.

“That is, any conflict that will have religious colouration. That will be the fastest way to liquidate this country. As leaders, we must understand that leadership comes with responsibilities. It is our job to keep preaching to those who are leading through our actions and words that we belong to one God.

“The fact that somebody is a Christian or Muslim does not mean that he hates another person. I have not seen any religion that preaches hate killings. It is the way we behave that promotes that.

“We are talking about hate speeches. The worst of it is hate action. If we treat ourselves as brothers and sisters, those following us will follow us. We must try as hard as we can not to have any religious escalation in Nigeria.”

Sani (Kaduna Central) in his submission described the incident as unfortunate and lamented the situation where Nigerians are faced with one form of violence or the other every day.

He said, “I stand to bring to the attention of the Senate and the nation an unfortunate violence we had yesterday in Kasuwan Magani, Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The violence took the lives of over six to seven people. Houses were burnt and it was a season of mayhem.

“The mayhem was attributed to youths who decided to take the laws into their hands. But it had the colouration of religious violence. Everyday, we wake up in this country and we are faced with one form of violence or another. We are now accepting the reality that violence is the way of life.

“It is unfortunate that we wake up everyday and we see killings, kidnappings and other things that shake the stability and unity of this country in every respect.

“I use this opportunity to appeal to all parties involved in all forms of violence to know that we cannot achieve any progress without peace.

“The unity of Nigeria is not about the flag or the anthem, but the establishment of a system that ensures justice, harmony and love among one another. I want the Senate to identify with us in our time of crisis.

“We must live together as Christians and as Muslims in this country. We need to live as people, despite the fact that we are from different parts of the country.”

    El-Rufai’s suspension laughable – APC

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State has described the Senator Hunkuyi led faction of the party as illegitimate, saying that, their purported suspension of Governor Nasir El-Rufai is laughable and should be disregarded.

This was also as the party said, sales of forms for the party primaries ahead of the Kaduna State local government elections slated for May 12, will commence this week.

This was part of the resolutions of the party’s State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting held last Friday.

Briefing newsmen on the outcome of the SEC meeting at the party Secretariat on Ali Akilu road, Kaduna on Monday, Acting Secretary of the party, Yahaya Baba Pate said, the meeting adopted the recommendations of the State Working Committee on the local government elections and commended the ongoing registration of party members.

According Pate, the party is set to roll out the timetable in few days time, for the party primaries ahead of the local government elections.

Reacting to the suspension of Governor El-Rufai by a faction of the party, Pate said, the ‘so called’ chairman of the faction, Danladi Wada is an imposter. Saying such person lacks power to suspend any member of the party.

According to him, “the authentic chairman of the party is Alhaji Shuaibu Idris. He is the chairman recognised by the national leadership of the party. Just last week, he received an invitation letter from the national secretariat, signed by the National Chairman, Chief Odigie Oyegun, inviting him for National Executive Committee meeting next week.

“The Senator Hunkuyi led group is illegitimate. As far as we are concerned, most of them have been expelled including the so called factional chairman, Danladi Wada. As for Senator Hunkuyi, he is under six months suspension, because we cannot expel him. Only the national leadership can expel him, because he is a political office holder.” he said.
