  • Godfatherism: Group backs El-Rufai’s comment

A group has supported Kaduna state Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai’s views on godfatherism in Nigerian politics, noting that it is a nationalistic issue that inhibits the development of Nigerian democracy and self-reliance among youths.

Governor El-Rufai recently lampooned the scourge of godfatherism in Nigeria, but the El-Rufai National Media Support Group in a press conference on Wednesday in Kaduna, told reporters that the issue needed to be viewed with all seriousness, as it inhibits youths development, making the youth dependent on moneybag politicians.

Addressing the media in Kaduna, National Chairman of El-Rufai National Media Support Group, Hon. Musa Aliyu Kalli said that the Governor’s comment should serve as a tonic to correct the notion of moneybag politicians who capitalized on youth’s vulnerability to use and dump them after election without recourse to their future.

According to the group, the governor’s statement on godfatherism needed to be seen as a corrective measure to help rejuvenate Nigeria’s democratic governance. They however tasked the youth to seek to be self-reliant and shun moneybags seeking votes to play demigod.

Kalli, who urged that el-Rufai’s view be seen as holistic and embraced by all, said that, “Governor el-Rufai is more of a nationalist than a regional politician hence he is speaking from the position of a nationalist, and his points need to be viewed so to put godfathers in politics in the right perspective.

“People need to ponder on the comments instead of condemning them. Governor el-Rufai’s track record as FCT minister are there to point to the fact that he is a nationalist. He has never acted as a regional leader, all he is after is a better living condition for all, irrespective of tribe, religion or political affiliation, Hon. Kalli added.

The National Chairman, called on youths to rededicate themselves to the cause of uplifting the democratic setting through a more reformed process and shun godfatherism for a Nigeria that is devoid of acrimony.

He added that the Governor is more concerned about the wellbeing of the youth of the nation, hence his call to shift ground from godfatherism in politics and play developmental democracy.

  • El-Rufai wrong to detain Adara leaders – Christian lawyers

Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai flouted constitution in the continued detention of Adara leaders, Christian lawyers have declared.

This position was taken after the President-in-Council of the Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON) meeting in Aba, Abia State.

Adara leaders were arrested in connection with the sectarian crises between the Adara people and Fulani community in Kajuru local government area of Kaduna State.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting by the National President and National Secretary of the council, Arome Okwori and Olatunji Omole, the lawyers lamented high rate of insecurity in Nigeria, and asked President Muhammadu Buhari to take security more seriously.

It reads: “The Quarterly Meeting of the President-in-Council, a body comprised of the National Executive Officers, Chairmen and Secretaries of all the 46 branches and Heads and Secretaries of the Directorates of CLASFON held from the 9th to 11th May, 2019 to deliberate on issues concerning the Nation and CLASFON.

“The meeting deliberated on the alarming rate of insecurity in our Nigeria, unconstitutional means of driving Government policy by Kogi State Governor; Recent General Elections – outcome and post-election issues; Infringement of the Human Rights of the people of Adara community of Kaduna State and continued detention of Leah Sharibu.

“CLASFON calls on the Governor of Kaduna State to respect the rule of law as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution in compliance with his oaths of allegiance and of office.

“CLASFON is saddened at the continuous downward slide of the state of security in our nation as evidenced in various cases of killing of innocent and hapless citizens and non-citizens whose security and protection is the primary function of government. Incidences also abound in the daily kidnap and abduction of citizens and non-citizens in most States of the Federation.

“CLASFON calls on the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to take seriously the responsibility of the protection of the lives and properties of all residents of Nigeria as provided by the Constitution and other relevant laws.

“CLASFON observes with dismay the neglect of the welfare of the staff of Kogi State Judiciary by the non-payment of their salaries resulting in the deterioration and near collapse of the justice system in Kogi State.

“CLASFON also observes the unconstitutional means deployed in driving Government Policy by the Kogi State Governor.

“We view steps taken in this direction as a flagrant usurpation of the powers conferred on constitutional organ and tantamount to dictatorial despotism.

“The said action of the Governor led to the strike that has shut down the courts for several months thereby denying common citizens’ access to justice.

“We therefore demand that the Governor of Kogi State should follow constitutional means in driving governance since Nigeria is a constitutional democracy.

“CLASFON observes with dismay the widespread irregularities and total disregard for the rules of engagement as contained in extant laws by major stakeholders that characterised the General elections conducted recently by the Independent National Election Commission (INEC).

“We urge the Federal Government of Nigeria to heed the call for electoral reforms with a view to giving Nigeria an electoral system that will dignify Nigeria in the comity of truly democratic nations.”

It added: “CLASFON further calls on members of the recently constituted Election Petition Tribunals at all levels who are perceived to have personal interest by reason of their personal affiliations to recuse themselves in the interest of justice, good conscience and fair play.

“CLASFON observes with grave concern the persistent failure of the government to work assiduously to facilitate the release of Leah Sharibu and other abducted school girls.

“CLASFON calls upon the Federal Government of Nigeria to leave no stone unturned to secure the release of Leah Sharibu and other girls in the custody and captivity of the Book Haram insurgents.”

  • Kaduna: from violence to cow milk revolution

The killings, kidnapping, ethnoreligious clashes and cattle rustling are well documented. What is less known is Kaduna State government’s effort to become the largest producer of cow milk and maize. ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE reports

The magic lies in a federal government’s $200m package called Agro-processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support or APPEALS. It is a multi-year project developed in collaboration with the World Bank.

APPEALS is in line with the Agricultural Promotion Policy “The Green Alternative” that focuses on food security, local production, job creation and economic diversification, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, C/River, Kogi, and Enugu are the six participating states with dairy, ginger, tomato, cassava, rice, cocoa cashew, wheat, poultry, aquaculture, and maize value chains.

The project which targets over 60,000 farmers, including, women, youths and People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs), in Kaduna State is focusing on three priority value chains of dairy, ginger and maize production in Kaduna, where the state has comparative advantage.

The big question however agitating many minds is whether Kaduna can really change its story and deliver on the multi-million dollars project? The state government believes and assured it will.

Kaduna State Deputy-Governor, Barnabas Bala Yusuf spoke at the one-day sensitisation workshop on policy alignment and collaboration in the implementation of the APPEALS project in the state.

He said Kaduna with over two million cattle and about 800,000 milking cows, as well as being one of the largest producers of maize, is set to deliver on the project and be the hub of ginger, maize and dairy in the world.

The Deputy Governor who doubles as Chairman, Steering Committee of the project said, the state government was recording landmark achievements in its drive to promote agriculture, even outside the three selected value chains.

Represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abdulkadir Kasim, the Deputy Governor said, Kaduna is an agrarian state with over 70% of the population engaged in crop and livestock production.

“We have a land area of 4.5million hectares out of which two million is arable land. Nigeria is the 10th producer of maize in the world, while Kaduna is leading the pack in national maize production. Every part of the crop can be used as food, feed and fuel. We are also the largest producer of fresh ginger and investment in ginger production and processing can create over 5000 jobs.

“We are not relenting in our desire to engineer transition in agriculture from small-scale subsistence activity to a market oriented commercially viable business. This is the reason why Kaduna State is one of the six states collaborating with the Federal Government and the World Bank in the implementation of this project.

“It is not by accident that Kaduna State selected Dairy, Ginger and Maize as its PVCs for the APPEALS project. Let me reiterate that the choice is deliberate. Maize is selected to promote food security, ginger is for its export potential and dairy is to improve livelihood. These will support our drive to create jobs improve standard of living and attract investment into the economy of our dear state.

“Nigeria is the largest producer of cow milk in West Africa. Kaduna State has estimated number of 2 million cattle and about 800,000 milking cows but produces just a little above 400,000 litres of milk per annum, mainly by pastoralists. The opportunity of investment is awesome.

“The project will support government policy thrust and priorities for the agriculture sector. Our support for the Project will be unrelenting. The Government has already released a take-off grant of forty-eight million (N48m) for the Project, which to my knowledge is the only participating state that has given this funding for the project.’ Said, the Deputy Governor.

Coordinator of the project, Dr. Yahaya Aminu said that, “the project targets 10,000 direct beneficiaries and 50,000 indirect beneficiaries in Kaduna State.”

Dr. Aminu, explained that, the project is meant to enhance agricultural productivity of small and medium scale farmers and improve value addition along priority value chains that are Dairy, Ginger and Maize for Kaduna state.

This he said, will be achieved through supporting farmers’ productivity and their linkage to markets, facilitating consolidation of agricultural products and cottage processing facilitating farmers and small and medium businesses’ clustering and connection to infrastructure network and business services.

According to him, “the project is expected to achieve; increase in productivity of agricultural produce of priority value chains of farmers supported by the project, increase in processed output of priority value chains by project beneficiaries.”

“At least 35% (3500) of direct beneficiaries will be women and at least 5-10% (500-1000) will be People with Disabilities (PWD). The project has a component to benefit women and youth that will allow them to develop agri-businesses that are expected to create jobs and improve their livelihoods.” Dr. Aminu said.

Speaking on the security, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abdulkadir Kasim said, as part of efforts to ensure security of the farmers and success of the project, the state government was set to deploy its security apparatus in that direction.

Dr. Kasim argued that, the project itself will lead to improved security in the state, considering the tens of thousands it will employ directly and indirectly.

According to him, “we are convinced that, this project in itself is a security measure. This is because, we have a army of unemployed youths in the country, and the projects targets more than 60,000 people to be employed, majorly youths across the value chains of the three products. This is because, there is a link between unemployment and crime. So, crime rate will definitely come down.

“Secondly, we are all aware that, Kaduna State government under the able leadership of Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai recently acquired some drones to be used for security surveillance and intelligence gathering. This will soon be yielding positive results in security of our state. This is in addition to synergy between the state government and security agencies towards ending various forms of security challenges in the state,” the Permanent Secretary assured.
