    We will continue to support govt’s efforts at strengthening education – Kaduna Assembly

    The Kaduna State House of Assembly said on Saturday it would continue to support the state government in its efforts at improving the quality of education.

    The Speaker of the House, Alhaji Aminu Shagali, made this known at a news conference in Kaduna.

    Shagali added that the lawmakers would accord the state government the support it would need to ensure that the children of the poor received the quality education they deserved.

    He said that the best thing to do was to get everything right and ensure that the educational structure was in good shape.

    “The sixteen years of PDP administration did not do anything to improve the existing schools.

    “So what this administration is doing is to improve the quality of education and infrastructure of primary and secondary schools in the state,” he said.

    On the issue of state government’s planned disengagement of teachers alleged to be unqualified, he said those with complaints should applied for redress and remarking of their scripts.

    He said that the children of most of those making unnecessary comments on the issue “are not in public schools. Most of them there children are in private schools or studying abroad.

    “They don’t want the children of the poor to have good, basic education.”

    According to the speaker, the assembly has already set up a seven-member committee to investigate the issues raised by labour unions  and proffer solutions.

    He assured the people of the state that the House would continue to do its best possible to ensure that the education system in Kaduna was improved.

    “For the people of Kaduna state, I want to say that we were sworn-in with the two holy books that whereby we said that we would do everything possible to ensure that our state develops and the educational system improves.

    “We will make sure that everything improves in the state not only on education, but all other aspects,” he said.

    Shehu Idris college of health science and technology to award degree soon – Bello

    Shehu Idris College of Health Science and Technology, Makarfi, will soon become a degree-awarding institution, a lawmaker said on Tuesday.

    Alhaji Bello Sani-Gimi, a member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Zaria.

    According to him, the state government is collaborating with some Egyptian firms to upgrade facilities and standard of the college to a degree awarding institution.

    He said the Egyptians had wanted to establish a university of technology but were asked by Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i to use facilities in the college for the project.

    Bello Sani-Gimi, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Finance, said the firms had inspected facilities at the college and expressed satisfaction with what they saw.

    “They are coming back so that we can sign a Memorandum of Understanding and continue from there; as I am talking to you they are not yet back, but we are still waiting for them.

    “However, as member representing the area, I will bring the issue to the floor of the house, so that we can legislate on it and give the governor the legislative backing for him to go ahead with the upgrading of the school, so that even if those investors from Egypt fail to come back, he can search for others.

    “Hopefully ‘Insha-Allah’, we will see to the actualisation of converting that college to a university,” Bello said.

    The lawmaker urged his constituents to support the present administration to enable it effectively deliver the dividends of democracy.

    Kaduna Assembly to strengthen partnership with media

    The Kaduna State House of Assembly, says it will strengthen its partnership with the media to deliver quality service to the people.

    The Chairman, House Committee on Information, Mr Nuhu Shadalafiya, made the commitment on Tuesday at the opening of a two-day workshop for legislative correspondents holding in Zaria, Kaduna State.

    The workshop was organised by Partnership to Engage Reform and Learn (PERL) funded by DFID.

    He pledged that the assembly would always be open to journalists to inquire about its activities and make suggestions on ways to transform the state.

    Shadalafiya that stressed the media remain a critical partner in the quest to transform the state and Nigeria for the good of all.

    The chairman advised the participants to use the knowledge gained during the workshop to enhance their professionalism for better service to the people.

    Earlier, Hajiya Hajara Mohammad, the workshop facilitator, said the aim of the workshop was to facilitate better understanding of the role of the legislature in governance and budget process.

    She stressed that the session would facilitate discussions on the way the media can proactively leverage its position to hold the executive and legislature accountable in ensuring quality service delivery to citizens.

    Mohammed added that the forum would build synergy between traditional and social media experts in the assembly for effective reportage on legislative engagements.

    Mr Abel Adejo, the PERL Team Leader in the state, said the media would remain “the eye and friend of the people and link to the public.”

    Adejo explained that the organisation was engaged in a five-year public sector accountability and governance programme funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

    The team leader said the programme kick started in May 2016 to provide service in the public sector in Kaduna and other flagship states.

    He added that the target was to reform government business, track programmes implementation and accounting policies, as well as budget implementation for public good, economic stability and private sector engagement.

    The General Manager, Freedom Radio, Kaduna, Malam Adamu Ladan, urged the media to be proactive in their reportage so as to hold those in public service accountable to the people.

    Ladan said the media must set agenda, push for responsible leadership in the country, and keep the public informed at all times on current issues in the system.

    Court stops El-Rufai from sacking 4,766 traditional rulers

    A Kaduna State High Court, sitting ‎in Kafanchan has granted an interim injunction restraining Governor Nasir El-Rufai and the state from sacking over 4,766 District and Village Heads across the state.

    El-Rufai’s government had reverted to 77 districts and 1,429 village units that existed prior to 2001, automatically sacking the 313 district heads and 4,453 village heads appointed after year 2001 by administration of former Governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi.

    The High Court’s interim injunction also restrained Kaduna State House of Assembly, Kaduna Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Jaafaru Ibrahim Sani,  Adara traditional council, Gbagyi traditional council and Attorney General of Kaduna State, either by themselves or via their agents, servants and privies from acting on the directives contained in the letter of the 3rd defendants to the 5th and 6th defendants dated the 12th June, 2017 wherein the 1st, 3rd and 4th defendants/Respondents directed the 5th and 6th Defendants among others to take steps to fill the offices of District and Village Heads within their domains pending the hearing and determination of Motion on Notice.

    Similarly, an order of interim injunction was also granted restraining the Defendants/Respondents from doing anything which has the consequences of being prejudicial to the plaintiffs continued occupation of their offices pending the hearing ‎and determination of the Motion on Notice.

    Mr. Stephen A. Gimba, Mr Gajere Dantawaye, Mr Ishaku ‎Yari, Alhaji Gambo Yaro who are the plaintiffs in the suit No. KDH/KAF/107/2017 had prayed for an order of Interim Injunction restraining the Defendants/Respondents either by themselves or via their agents, servants and privies from acting on the directives contained in the letter of the 3rd defendants to the 5th and 6th defendants dated the 12th June, 2017 wherein the 1st, 3rd and 4th defendants/Respondents directed the 5th and 6th Defendants among others to take steps to fill the offices of District and Village Heads within their domains pending the hearing and determination of Motion on Notice.

    The plaintiffs also prayed for an order of interim injunction restraining the Defendants/Respondents from doing anything which has the consequences of being prejudicial to the plantiffs continued occupation of their offices pending the hearing ‎and determination of the Motion on Notice and such further and/or other orders as the court may deem fit to make in the ccircumstance.

    However, the Presiding Judge, Justice S.S Daka, noted that, the restraining order which was signed by him and also signed by the Assistant Chief Registrar Esther B. Yayit dated the 20th day ‎of June, 2017 was based on the presentation of Abdullahi Bello Esq counsel to the Applicants and having perused the 9 paragraphs affidavit in support and 5 exhibits marked MK A.

    The matter has however been adjourned till 29th June, 2017 for hearing of the Motion on Notice.

    Chanchangi airlines chairman is dead

    Amadu Chanchangi, Kaduna-based billionaire and Chairman of Chanchangi Airlines, is dead.

    He died along Kaduna-Abuja road while being transported to a hospital in Abuja in the early hours of Wednesday.

    The business mogul had been seriously ill.

    “He has been buried around 2pm Wednesday according to Islamic rites at the Bashama road cemetery,” family sources said.

    Among early sympathisers were Bala Ibn Na’Allah, Deputy Senate Leader, Mohammed Ali, former member of Kaduna State House of Assembly, among others.

    Na’Allah, Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, described the late Chanchangi as a man of peace and a shining example of a devout Muslim.

    “His contribution to the development of the aviation sector, more especially in the North, will remain indelible,” he said.

    He prayed to Allah to grant him eternal rest and the family, people of Taraba and Kaduna states, the fortitude to bear the loss.

    Chanchangi is survived by three wives, 33 children; among them is Rufai Chanchangi, a member of the House of Representatives.

    Abducted Kaduna lawmaker regains freedom

    The Police on Wednesday confirmed the release of Ibrahim Ismail, a member of Kaduna State House of Assembly, who was abducted from his residence on Tuesday.

    The Kaduna State Police Command spokesman, ASP Aliyu Usman, made the confirmation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

    Usman said the lawmaker was released on Wednesday evening and had reunited with his family.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lawmaker, who represents Tudun Wada constituency in the state Assembly, was abducted at his residence in Abapka area of Kaduna metropolis.

    The police spokesman did not however say whether ransom was paid before Ismail’s release of if any of the kidnappers was arrested.

    Usman assured residents of the police commitment to protect lives and property, and urged them to volunteer information on the movement of criminals, to make the society safe.
