C’River partners Arewa on cotton production

The Cross River government said that it is partnering with the Arewa Cottons in Kaduna state to cultivate a cotton farm project in Woda, Yala Local Government Area of the state.

Mr Christian Ita, Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar.

Ita said that the cotton project was designed to serve as feeder to the Calabar garment factory.

He added that the 2,000 hectares Cotton farm was expected produce about 30 tonnes of raw cottons for the Factory before the state carnival celebration.

He said that the farm would ensure that the Calabar Garment Factory operated at optimum capacity.

“The garment factory needs raw materials to be fully operational and to meet World standard as well as pressures.

“So, the cotton farm would provide this required raw materials, hence the need for the partnership”.

  • Dangote partners Alba-Bello to sell food items at low prices

The Dangote Group is partnering Alba-Bello Trading Company in Zaria to sell food items at low prices to customers across Kaduna and neighboring states.

Alhaji Sa’idu Ibrahim-Mohammed, the General Manager, Administration and Corporate Services in Alba-Bello Trading Company, disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday after the launch of the programme in Zaria, Kaduna State.

He said the food items to be sold would include rice, spaghetti, indomie noodles, semolina, sugar, salt and flour, among others.

He said the essence of the collaboration was to give customers real value for their money, provide succor and create job opportunities for the youth.

“The benefits of this collaboration are much; it will create job opportunities for our teaming youths and will ease societal difficulties in getting some commodities.

“This is because there are many commodities that are very difficult to get unless you travel out. It will also enable the people to get what they want.

“Again, customers will get real value for their money because in Nigeria, some products are re-bagged and hardly can an ordinary person recognize the shoddy deal,” he said.

Ibrahim-Mohammed appealed for cooperation and understanding from customers since the company intended to be selling all products of Dangote in future.

“This is because in the course of transaction, you may step on some people’s toe in one way or the other, hence the need for cooperation and understanding.

“We, therefore, appeal to customers to inform us whenever they realize a shoddy deal because we are here to serve their best interest.

“We need vital information concerning high price, depreciation in quality standard and decrease in quantity, among others,” he said

Opuiyo said that the service had also arrested Boko Haram suspects in Kano, Kogi and Yobe.

He attributed the successes recorded to the cooperation and support of Nigerians who volunteered useful information to the service.

Opuiyo assured that the service would maintain the zeal to ensure safety of lives and property of Nigerians.

  • Ministry to part mining intervention funds to boost tiles production

The Ministry of Mines and Steel Development said on Tuesday it would commit part of the mining intervention funds to support tile producers, to reduce importation gap.

Dr Kayode Fayemi, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, disclosed this during a tour to CIBI Nigeria Limited quarry in Buruku, Kaduna State.

Fayemi said part of the fund would be drawn from the World Bank single digit loan and the N30 billion Mining Intervention Fund approved by the Federal Government last year, among others.

According to him, the ministry is in partnership with the Bank of Industry (BOI) to offer loan facility from the intervention funds to ”serious minded people” already producing tiles.

“We are working with the BOI to disburse the loans as soon as the intervention funds are released to serious tile producers across the country,” he said.

He said the CIBI would have been able to produce more than 200,000 square metres being made annually from dimension stones, if adequate resources, including finance, equipment and others were in its reach.

Fayemi said that Nigeria needed four million square metres of tiles annually, adding that all the local tile producers could only produce less than a million annually.

“The bulk of tiles we use in Nigeria are imported from Italy, China and India, among others; we need to support them because we envisaged this in our roadmap.

“We are endowed with lots of mineral resources; we have dimension stones everywhere but not exploited; there is no stone we don’t have in Nigeria,” he said.

Alhaji Nuhu Wya, Chairman of CIBI, urged government to support its project, as there were more demands for tiles but it lacked sufficient capital to expand the business.

Wya said the company usually received market orders from its customers two months before production.

”Our company needs long-term loans to run the business to increase tiles production that could reduce importation gap.

“If investment put in oil industry is replicated in solid minerals, Nigeria does not need to depend on oil as its mainstay because we are blessed with mineral stones abundantly,’’ he said.

The ministry’s roadmap to contribute to the nation’s GDP is to reduce importation of tiles and concentrate on the production.

The minister, on March 13, commenced tour of mine fields across the country.

“I am not the source or manufacturer of the arms ammunition, I got them from Jos,” he explained.

  • Has Yero lived up to expectation?

Has Yero lived up to expectation?

Alhaji Mukthar Yero succeeded Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State a year ago, following his demise in a helicopter crash. TONY AKOWE  writes on his achievements, constraints and prospects of continuity in 2015.

He never planned for it. Neither did he prepare for the great task. But destiny has placed on his shoulders the responsibility of governing Kaduna State. Alhaji Mukthar Yero became the governor on a platter of gold. However, uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.

In the last three years, he has been part of the political calculation in the complex state. Yero has served as the Commissioner for Finance under former Governor Namandi Sambo, shortly before he became the Vice President. He was also the deputy governor under Yakowa. Thus, he understands the ethno-religious configuration and its implications for politics and governance in the Northwest state.

The mantle of leadership fell on Yero, few days after his predecessor had just presented the budget to the House of Assembly for approval. Few weeks before the budget presentation, the government had awarded the contract for the construction of 32 roads across the 23 local governments. The towns and villages feared that the contracts may be reviewed. When Yero succeeded Yakowa. But the governor quickly restored public confidence by projecting his administration as a government of continuity.

The first few months were challenging for the administration. There was a report that Yero had withdraw the budget from the House and injected new things into it. However, following the scrutiny of the budget, it was discovered that there was no alteration. Apparently thinking that the governor would not continue with the implementations of projects initiated by Yakowa Administration, many contractors handling the road projects abandoned the sites, although they had collected the 25 per cent mobilisation fee.

However, the governor rose to the occasion. He inspected the projects and told the contractors to hasten their works to avoid the wrath of the government. Yero said: “I can say that I am not satisfied with the level of work on some of the projects I have inspected because it is obvious that the contractors are not serious about the work. However, I am satisfied with the level of work on some of the projects, especially the Soba-Kofar Gayan-Kofar Kuyambana Road.

“That job is going on well and we would assist the contractor to finish the job in good time. But, the other road projects that we have visited, which we are not satisfied with, we are going back to the drawing board to see what is wrong and address the challenges that we have. We intend to complete the projects in time and the only way that we can do that is by pushing the consultants and contractors to do the right thing.

“Also, the Ministry of Works has to be up and doing and take the challenge of doing its job properly”.

To critics, Yero Administration has been slow in fighting the infrastructure battle. But, the administration is steady. In the metropolis, the governor has kept faith with the projects awarded by his predecessor. But, the rural area is still craving for attention.

There is a consensus of opinion that Yero has recorded a tremendous achievement in the area of fostering peace and harmony in Kaduna State. From the onset, he moved swiftly to address the security challenge. He embarked on the tour of the state and held consultations with religious leaders, traditional rulers, youths and women groups in the three senatorial zones. The first meeting was held at the Kagoro Town Hall, the second at the Zaria Hotel and the third took place at the Kaduna International Trade and Investment Centre. Before he passed on, Yakowa had set up a 70-man Committee on Peace and Reconciliation, the committee’s suggestions were insufficient to halt the trend of insecurity. Yero became a preacher of peace, urging the indigenes to embrace themselves as one. He said that he looked forward to the day when the people will live together peacefully, irrespective of their tribes or religious beliefs.

Also, the hosting of the International Conference of the Forum of Cities in Transition was the icing on the cake on Yero’s peace move and efforts at restoring confidence. Since then, foreign investors have been visiting the state to explore investment opportunities. Chinese, Indian and Pakistani investors have indicated that they would invest in textile, agriculture, tourism and other sectors.

Speaking at the conference, Yero assured that his government will provide equal economic and political opportunities to the citizens to reduce the suspicion and acrimony raging in the state. “We have since declared that in Kaduna State, all citizens are equal partners. There is no indigenes-settlers dichotomy in our state. All citizens have equal rights to achieve their full potentials, as long as the laws of the land are obeyed. The best way to resolve conflicts is by agreeing individually and collectively as a people, to dialogue over issues that create division among us, so as to build trust and understanding.

“ To achieve this, there is need for further action, which is the practical implementation of the recommendations of this conference. Let me assure you that, as a government, we are ready to implement the report of this conference to further enhance our peace-building process in Kaduna. Our administration is committed to engendering permanent peace and genuine reconciliation among the diverse people of the state. We shall not relent, until we re-enact the past history of harmonious coexistence that endured for several decades in this state”, he said.

Yero noted that unemployment and poverty could predispose idle people into crime. He therefore, promised to provide jobs for the youths to steer them away from social vices.

“This is for the purpose of galvanizing our people to unite and work together in building a viable today and a better future. Furthermore, this administration is determined to ensure lasting peace through providing massive job opportunities for our teaming unemployed youths. We believe that when our youths are gainfully employed they will shun vices, including drug addiction and violence.

“The government will also strive to provide equal economic and political opportunities to all citizens of the state to reduce the suspicion and acrimony in the minds of the people. In Kaduna State, all citizens are equal partners, there is no indigenes-settlers dichotomy in our state, all citizens have equal rights to achieve their full potentials as long as the laws of the land are obeyed,” he added.

Few weeks after assuming office, Yero distributed the SURE-P items purchased by the Yakowa Administration. Incidentally, Yero was the Chairman of the Implementation Committee of the SURE-P. He was also the Chairman of the Committee on the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme. At a ceremony in Kaduna, 700 tricycles, 40 taxis and 40 buses were given out to beneficiaries, with the government paying 50 percent of the cost. The government also launched a training programme for 7,600 women and youths from the 23 local governments. The trainees, according to the governor, will be given starter packs to start their business. Yero, who said that the SURE-P training will gulp N139 million, assured that “at the end of this training, each beneficiary will be given a starter pack relevant to his or her area of training to enable him start business and become self reliant”.

He added: “By providing you with gainful self-employable skills and the wherewithal to start up your businesses, we have taken a bold step to reverse the ugly trend of youth restiveness. We hope to sustain and consolidate the programme, in view of its far-reaching impact. In addition to the schemes we are flagging-off today, government is collaborating with the Bank of Industry and Bank of Agriculture to provide N1.0billion soft loans for Agriculture and Small and Medium Scales Enterprises in Kaduna State”.

Yero has also invested in the education sector in the last one year. The government has spent N116 million to build the capacity of teachers of English Language, Mathematics and other science subjects. The goal is to increase their professional competence. Also, N100 million is being spent on the rehabilitation of primary schools. The poor performance of students in English and Mathematics is worrisome to the governor. To address this, the government organised seminars in the three senatorial zones. It also organised another one at the state level, which held in Kaduna. Experts and technocrats made some recommendations. Yero has assured that these suggestions will be implemented. However, the state has recruited 1, 802 qualified teachers to improve teaching of various subjects in our schools.

In Kaduna State, the health sector is on course. The government has developed the ‘Kaduna State Strategic Health Development Plan (SSHDP). Under the scheme, there are eight priority areas. These are Leadership and Governance, Health Delivery Services, Human Resource for Health, and Health Care Financing. Others are Health Information System, Partnership for Health Development and Research for Health. Among the achievements recorded in the sector are the free medical care for pregnant women and children under five years, the sustenance of antiretroviral treatment (ART), the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMCTC), HIV counselling and testing (HCT) and tuberculosis and leprosy (TBL) programs. The ‘emergency transport system’, whereby over 1000 pregnant women in labour were transported free of charge to health facilities is being implemented, in collaboration with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).

However, government has not resolved the water crisis, especially in Zaria and environs. It is hoped that the multi-billion Zaria Regional Water Supply Scheme will end the hurdle. The water project is supported by the Islamic Development Bank and the African Development Bank. The government is also intensifying efforts in completing other water projects, including the Kaduna, Zaria, Kafanchan/Kagoro, Zonkwa and Saminaka water supply systems. Also, the government has approved the construction of 46 No. Solar Powered Boreholes and 680 No. Hand Pump Boreholes across the state in the last one year.

However, Yero has however been accused of showcasing projects that were implemented by his predecessor. Although he was the deputy governor when they were completed, critics have pointed out that he was not the governor who accomplished them. But, the governor has insisted that his administration completed some of them in the spirit of continuity.

As the administration enters its second year, the people are looking forward to the presentation of his its budget. If Yero performs well in office, his chance of being elected as the governor in 2015 will be bright. But, if otherwise, many gladiators will plot his downfall at the primaries, despite the power of incumbency he wields.

  • Crisis hits Kaduna House of Assembly

    •Two speakers emerge

    •Financial inducement alleged

The leadership crisis in the Kaduna State House of Assembly took a new turn yesterday, with the emergence of two speakers after some members announced the impeachment of Speaker Muazu Gangara and the election of a new speaker.

But, the impeached speaker led 15 other members of the Assembly, including the principal officers, to announce that he remains the substantive speaker, insisting that those who allegedly impeached him did not meet the constitutional provision.

Minority Leader Shehu Adamu said they had what he described as “unconfirmed reports” that Governor Mukthar Ramalan Yero met on Monday with some of the legislators and promised them a reward of N10 million each to impeach the speaker.

The office of the Vice-President and the Kaduna State government denied the involvement of the executive in the impeachment.

Gangara and his deputy were removed from office by 18 members of the House at its plenary, even as the Majority Leader, Usman Gurara, said the house was on break and had been reconvened.

The speaker, the deputy speaker and the principal officers were absent at the sitting where Ishiaku Kantiok (Zonkwa Constituency) moved the motion for the impeachment of the House leadership after Philemon Usman had been elected Speaker Protempre.

Kantiok was said to have hinged his argument for the impeachment motion on three newspaper reports, which said they visited the vice-president in Abuja and that money exchanged hands during the visit.

He said the speaker failed to defend them against the allegations and, therefore, should be impeached.

Addressing a news conference at the NUJ secretariat, Gangara said he was still in charge.

He said: “We want to inform you that the purported sitting of some members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly is a nullity. The House has since suspended sitting, until further notice. We, therefore, urge the citizens of Kaduna State, especially our teeming supporters, to remain calm and ignore the impunity going on in the House of Assembly.”

The newly-elected speaker, Shehu Tahir, described the events in the house as a milestone in the history of the assembly, pointing out that “what transpired in the house was a clear manifestation that democracy is driven by the will and voice of the majority”.

He added: “I have accepted the challenges of the office of the speaker and assure you that with your support, cooperation and understanding, I will not let you down. However, for the house to be focused and vibrant to meet the present day reality, members must resolve to undertake their constitutional mandate with all seriousness it deserves.”

The Majority Leader, Usman Gurara, at the news conference, said the modality for the removal of a speaker is contained in Section 92 of the constitution, which states that two Third of the elected members of the House shall be the one to impeach a speaker and two-third members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly is 23 members.

He said: “We have 34 members in the Kaduna State House of Assembly and if you divide that by two third, you have 22.6. Those who sat today were 16 and so, they don’t have the quorum to impeach a speaker.

“You will recall what happened in Plateau and the ruling of the Supreme Court is very clear. We in the Kaduna State House of Assembly always follow the path of peace and, as lawmakers, we will continue to uphold the constitution. If we fail to respect the constitution, I don’t know who will defend the constitution.

“As it stands, the house has been adjourned. We have our rules, which state that the chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business shall schedule sittings and he has followed that rule to tell them that all sittings be adjourned till further notice.”

Adamu alleged financial inducement in the impeachment process, saying: “There is another report, which we are yet to confirm that Governor Mukthar Ramalan Yero met with them yesterday (Monday) and made offer of cash of up to N10 million each for them to sign the impeachment document.

“As I said, it is an unconfirmed statement and when we confirm it, we will come here and inform you. Another report is that it is not only him, but his oga (boss) at the top is also interested and may have a hand in what is going on.”

The Director-General, Media and Publicity, Ahmed Maiyaki, described the allegation against his boss as baseless and untrue.

Maiyaki said: “This is totally untrue. It is the figment of the imagination of those peddling this dangerous rumour. His Excellency is a neutral person, who believes in the independence of the legislative arm of government. As an arm of government, they have the rights as to who leads them.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice-President on Media and Publicity, Umar Sani, described the speaker of the Kaduna House of Assembly as a drowning man.

Sani told The Nation on the phone : “The vice- president has no interest in who becomes speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly and does not have any direct dealing with them. He has been there for a long time and nobody has ever made moves to remove him.”

Civil rights activist Shehu Sani said the removal was nothing but an elitist exercise in the game of power.

He said: “The lawmakers have allowed themselves to be hypnotised and intimidated by the executive over the years. The Assembly has been denigrated and degraded to the status of temple of endorsement and compliance. They have by their ideology of loyalty supervised the fading glory and fortune of the state.”

  • ‘God could have saved Yar’Adua but…’

‘God could have saved Yar’Adua but…’

Apostle Emmanuel Kure is the National Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria(PFN) and visioner, Throneroom Trust Ministry in Kafanchan, Kaduna State. He spoke with reporters on the state of the nation. Sunday Oguntola was there.

Why are you still based in the north despite the Boko Haram insurgency?

I am a northerner. The day I leave the North, there would be no hope for my people. I am not afraid of being a victim of Boko Haram. I didn’t have to leave the North for Boko Haram because I am in Christ and Christ is in me. I don’t fear death.

How come such an insurgency is coming from the North? Is it actually caused by poverty as widely believed?

No, Boko Haram existed before now. This one was a political miscalculation that boomeranged. Poverty is the cause of it and it is the culture of the North. Mohammed Yusuf, who was killed, was mingling with politicians and that was why he was killed.

Why do you think they are going after Christians if you said it is political?

It is because it has become a political game. They want attention and Christians are easy to kill. That is why they went about burning churches to create attention.

What would you say about the state of emergency?

The declaration of state of emergency is what I’m not happy about because it has not gone well. Those states affected should have their governors removed because some of them are the ones creating problems in their states.

I will not be surprised if the efforts of the military to restore order are being undermined because some of the governors are not supposed to be in power while the state of emergency is declared in their states.

Will there ever be peace then in Nigeria considering the penchant, as you claimed, of the North to create crises?

Yes there can be when the patriotic ones begin to be bold. There are northerners who are patriotic. Let me tell you one of these northern patriotic people was the late president YarAdua. Sincerely, he was a very patriotic man.

Somebody like Buhari was one person I admired.I really thought at a time Buhari would be one of the saviours of this nation. He was the finest northerners ever produced but I’m beginning to have a rethink. It takes things to bring out a man. It takes provocation to bring out a man. When Buhari made that broadcast over the radio in Kaduna where he was lambasting the Federal Government about Boko Haram thing, comparing it with the late Yar’Adua’s efforts, every respect I had for him went out.

I thank God he never became the president. We would have been in trouble and I pray he never becomes the President. Any party that chooses him that party will never win any election. Let them hear that now, they will never win any election.

Even the North will not vote for him. That is not the kind of leader that we want in Nigeria. It is very unfortunate that you allow such provocations. It only means it is time for him to resign from politics before he messes up the remaining glory he has left.

It is not the Buhari we used to know. Something went wrong except if God was answering our prayers by making us see the true man because we have been praying that kind of prayer that God will begin to provoke men to show themselves and all over they have begun to show themselves and God is using that to arrange things.

Now with God removing Buhari’s age group, the younger generation can come up. If the APC really wants to give Jonathan a good fight, they should bring out a man that is truly patriotic. They should not commit the same sins PDP is committing.

How do you see his relationship with Pastor TundeBakare then?

Bakare is my friend. We know each other people even say we look alike. Bakare has a sincere heart. His thoughts about Nigeria are good and nobody can take that away from him. As a lawyer who is well articulate, he doesn’t pitch his tent without looking at the pros and the cons. There are some choices Bakare has made that I will not believe were in the perfect will of God.

I am also a prophet but what he did was conducive for that time for him. It was just the way to go to make his point. It was not necessarily in the realms of being in the will of God or not the will of God. If we understand that then we will just allow the matter to be.

Now I don’t want to comment on his relationship with Buhari. It is his choice. He is human and can make mistakes and he has the right to make mistakes. He will learn from them and grow and I will beg that we give him that chance to learn from whatever he needs to learn from and become a better person.

You were one of the priests that went to pray for the late Yar’Adua, what was your experience like?

I don’t think I want to open that now. The day will come. Maybe after this government because it is an offshoot of that government. Let us allow that for now. But the truth is that he had his own pressure, Islamic pressure too. Of course when a Christian is the President, Christians will pressurise that President. When a Muslim is the President, Muslims will pressurise but the President must be able to draw the limes and know that he is the President of everybody.

Yar’Adua tried to do that. Some of us who were priests were frustrated. Sometimes we were not allowed access until Yar’Adua himself started calling our names that we should come. There were Muslims extremists within the government that did everything to stop us at the gate even when the President sent for us before we went there and I was not the only one with that experience.

Some of the fathers will tell you the same thing. That was the first time in the history of this country that we would be stopped at the gate. That is why I am happy with President Jonathan. During Christmas, Muslims would gather to go and pay homage and he will open his doors to them. They would rejoice but in the time of Yar’Adua, they would choose only their political priests, not Christian clergies.

When you went to pray for Yar’Adua, was he still alive?

He was alive, of course. Do you think, I, Oyedepo, Onaiyekan and Professor Obaje will come out and tell you a lie that he was alive when he was dead? Do you think we would do that and lose our salvation? Everybody knew I will not be part of that.

The impression Nigerians had was that it was his dead body that was brought from Saudi Arabia

Well, I don’t know whether it was a dead body I shook. I shook a hand that stretched itself. If it was dead, I needed to have cast out some demons but I never saw a dead body. He was frail but he was not dead.

    Did he recognise you?

He didn’t have enough time to start recognising people. Sometime when you go to the presidency, the protocol people will start rushing you. The most important thing was to pray for him. He was alive and tried to recognise us. He made efforts to speak. They tried to calm him down. They didn’t want him to talk but he made his efforts to speak, especially when it came to Onaaiyekan’s turn, there was recognition.

Onaiyekan was the CAN President. He had had more rapport with Onaiyekan than any of us but the essence of our meeting with him was to pray for perfect healing unto Him to bring perfect healing.

How many minutes did you spend with him?

Well, I can’t put it in minutes. I can’t remember now. It was as brief as brief. It was naturally done but it was sharp and straight to the point.

What criteria was used to select those whom you said went to pray for him?

I am just one person God arrested on the sides but the reason Yar’Adua gave for me was number one, I had given a prophetic insight into his situation for many years. I prophesied his coming to power.

He came when Atiku and other people were there. I had prophesied also how he would end if he didn’t do some things. If he didn’t put some things right, I told him his destiny. His destiny was to handle the Niger Delta crises and then hold back at that time because another kind of Book Haram was stirring itself up.

The killing had begun on the Plateau and other places. I told him part of his destiny was to bring peace to the North. He was to be like a prince of peace, a harbinger of peace to the North to sooth frayed the nerves of his fellow Muslims.

I told him it was his destiny and if he allowed the Muslims to wipe out Christians deliberately, the Lord will take his life from him. I also told him the timings when that will take place and it came to pass exactly the timings I gave.

I also told the Vice President these timings and meaning that if it works like that at that time, the Vice President would also become the President and it came to pass. Now they remembered those things and pulled me aside.

They said the reason you are here sir is if God can show mercy. Can God change these timings? It was like they felt he might not survive. Can God change these timings show mercy and they have the right to ask God. Anybody will do that and that was why they called in the Muslims. That was why they called in the Christians too.

I knew my mission. So, when I got there, I sensed that it would not happen like that and I told them what would make him escape. We were called in because they believed we have access to God and could pray some effective prayers that could solve the problems.

I think that is about all the details I could give for now.

Did you tell them the conditions that would have made him live as you hinted?

Yes I told them. I had announced at our meeting in the Sport Complex of the National Stadium Lagos that within three weeks, the Lord said they should take the late President out of the villa. They should take him to Katsina or somewhere else where he would be away. They should take him to where he would be withdrawn from the pressure and the troubles at that time because the polity was heated up.

Second, I told them to take him away from there because even if as small as mosquito bites him for once, he would die. Thirdly, I told them I saw only three weeks. So if they had taken him out within those three weeks, maybe God would have shown mercy and given him some more time. I don’t know how long because I am not God.

I was just an oracle who God used to speak for that season. I was told later, they couldn’t take him immediately and he stood there to ensure Jonathan did not take over even at the determent of his health. May be it was a tactical move. His wife had no say in the matter.

But the general impression was that his wife was the one calling the shots

Nigerian politicians are very complicated. When they know their interests will be at stake, they use you (journalists). They will keep you there to get what they want. I think she was also under captivity. That is my opinion. The press likes controversies and my opinion was that she too was under captivity by those people.

Of course, she would have wanted her husband to live; naturally, she would have wanted to remain first lady. Naturally, let us not pretend. But it was not her call. It was the call of the politicians, which included the people in the National Assembly and other Nigerians, who were calling that let the constitution have its ways. It was not her call.

2015: PDP vows to disqualify ‘bribe-offering’ aspirants

As politicians prepare for the 2015 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party said it will disqualify any aspirant caught offering bribes to delegates to secure ticket to contest electoral office.

Gumbari, the party’s Zone 3 chairman in Kaduna State, stated this in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Monday.

He said a special committee had been set up to monitor the activities of aspirants and report any unwholesome attitude to the party headquarters.

“We have resolved to field only popular, acceptable and saleable candidates in 2015 and shall not tolerate anyone sharing money or using any other dirty tactics to influence the primary elections,’’ he said.

“The sanctions for bribe-offering aspirants will be very severe; the minimum is disqualification from the race.

“The party can also suspend or expel the erring party from its fold so as to cleanse the system,’’ added Gumbari, a two-term member of the House of Representatives.

He advised rich party faithful to use such money to develop the party and strengthen it to win elections.
