  • 10 killed, 30 houses razed in renewed attack on Kaduna village

    • Buhari condemns internecine violence, calls for mediation

No fewer than 10 bodies have been recovered and about 30 houses confirmed burnt in another attack by unknown gunmen on Nandu Gbok community in Sanga Government Area of Kaduna State yesterday.

But, Kaduna State Government while confirming the attack said nine citizens were killed by criminal elements that attacked the village in the early hours of yesterday.

Reacting to the development yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the killings and urged the actors in the communal and persistent violence in Kaduna State to come to terms with the fact that mutual violence has no winners, but losers on both sides of the conflict.

He said, “I am deeply troubled by the fact that sanctity of life is now treated with such reckless disregard that people derive joy in shedding the blood of others or perceived enemies.”

The president, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, noted that “inhumanity has replaced compassion in the hearts and minds of the perpetrators of these atrocities.”

“No responsible leader would go to bed happy to see his citizens savagely killing one another on account of ethnic and religious bigotry”, he further noted sadly.

According to Buhari, “Violence cannot be the solution to these persistent conflicts as long as people resort to deliberate provocations, revenge and counter revenge.”

He said that, “While the government remains committed to protecting its citizens, the communities involved must also put their shoulder to the wheel in order to find a lasting solution.”

According to the President, “If the people resist government’s efforts to hold the perpetrators and their sponsors accountable, it would be very difficult to bring the violence to a permanent end.”

He regretted that “everything is politicised in Nigeria, including the efforts to bring offenders to justice, because their people will rise up in arms to resist their arrests and prosecution.”

He described hate, bigotry and prejudice as “deadly poisons that have infected the human psyche on such scale that people now don’t have any moral inhibitions about taking life.”

The president also appealed to the warring communities to stop inhibiting the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA’s efforts to deliver food, medicines and temporary shelter to the victims of the violence who are in urgent need of assistance.

Also a statement signed by Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s media aide, Samuel Aruwan, the governor condemned the killings.

He said “The Kaduna State Government has been briefed by the security agencies on the killing of nine persons by criminal elements that attacked Nandu village in Sanga LGA in the early hours of today.”

The Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has organised a free medical outreach for residents of Anchuna community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The outreach is part of activities to mark the annual ‘Exercise Camp Highland’, the final war training for final year cadets of the academy. The military institution also promised to sink a borehole for the community within two weeks, and distributed mosquito nets and sanitary materials to the locals.

The Commandant, Maj.-Gen. Adeniyi Oyebade, who opened the outreach, said the intervention was part of the community development roles of the military.

“This medical outreach is part of the Camp Highland Exercise. Our cadets have been here in these communities for their final bush training exercise, and we thought the communities should feel our presence, not only in terms of security, but also by way of humanitarian services.”

Traditional Ruler of the area Yohanna Kukah said aside the medical outreach, the presence of the military has sent criminals into hibernation.

    •Police: we’re in control

gunmen have again attacked Godogodo in Jema’a Local Government of Kaduna State, killing six farmers.

The community was attacked two weeks ago. Eleven persons were killed and two villages burnt. It was alleged that same people were behind both incidents.

The villagers claimed the gunmen said their villages were now grazing reserves, and wanted them to vacate.

A journalist, who was an early caller to the village, said: “Elders and relatives of the deceased gave their names as: Monday Hamza, 24, married with three children; Toma Masara 35, married with three children; Chaka (Waje) Rubutu, 26, married with four children; Linus (Golkofa) 20, married with two children; Julius (Golkofa) 19, married with a child; Boboo Okocha, 18, and Sambo (Golkofa) 17.

Another elder said: “Godogodo is full of refugees because it is a bigger village, close to the expressway, with a better security. I can assure you there is no day someone is not killed by Fulani herdsmen around here.

“After the attack, they would cut down crops or herd in their cattle to eat the growing crops. There will be hunger this year in these villages. What they are saying is that our villages are now cattle grazing reserves and they want everybody out.

“Last Saturday, these young men that were killed went out as a group to their farms. We were told that armed herdsmen attacked them on their farms, and a few escaped with bullet wounds. A search party on Sunday found them ridden with bullets and machetes’ cuts. They were dead.

“The police have taken their bodies to Kafanchan mortuary.”

Police spokesman Aliyu Usman confirmed the murder, saying arrests have been made.

“Yes, it is true some people were killed in Godogodo on Saturday. There was tension in the place, but we have deployed our men in the affected areas and we are on top of the situation. We have made arrests, and the suspects are being investigated at our Kafanchan Division.

“We advise residents to be cautious when they move; they should also report suspicious movements to the police,” he said.
