  • IDPs hunger protest: House Committee demands sanctions for officials

The House of Representatives Committee on Internally Displaced Persons ( IDPs ), Refugees and North-East Initiatives on Wednesday faulted the recourse to teargas to disperse protesting hungry lDPs at Teachers Village camp in Maiduguri.

It asked the Federal Government to intervene by ensuring immediate supply of the desperately needed food items by the displaced persons.

It also demanded sanctions for the perpetrators and beneficiaries of the inhumane crime.

It said the committee is ready to share vital information capable of fishing out the culprits no matter how highly placed.

It, however, expressed regrets that 32,000 IDPs have crossed over to Cameroon between Mid-December 2018 and 31 January, 2019.

The committee, in a statement by its chairman, Muhammed Sani Zorro, said massive consignments of these food and non-food items procured with state resources are either at varying stages of expiration or being shared (in the open) to highly-placed politicians for use as campaign tools.

The statement said: “The House of Representatives Committee on IDPs, Refugees and North-East Initiatives wishes to express sadness over yesterday’s protest by Internally Displaced Persons (lDPs) at Teachers Village camp in Maiduguri, and the needless resort to the use of tear gas to disperse them by the police.

“It is on record that the authorities concerned have continued to deprive the starving and desperate IDPs of food and non-food Items whose everyday complaints, pleas, and outcries only fell on the deaf ears of insensitive officials charged with their care.

“Sadly, massive consignments of these food and nonfood items procured with state resources are now either at varying stages of expiration, or are being shared (in the open) to highly-placed politicians for use as campaign tools in the countdown to our general elections.

“Evidence also abound of the age-old diversion and illegal sale of humanitarian assistance items in the open market. This is evil at its best, reprehensible and unacceptable to all men and women of conscience.”

The committee appealed to the Federal Government to ensure immediate supply of food and essential items to the IDPs.

The statement added: “The Committee urges the Federal Government to act as a matter of supreme urgency by ensuring immediate supply of the desperately needed items without further delay and punish the perpetrators and beneficiaries of the inhumane crime.

“As part of its oversight functions, the committee is willing and ready to share vital information capable of fishing out the culprits no matter how highly placed.

On the general election, it pleaded with the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow the IDPs to vote wherever they are.

“Such flexibility should be extended to affected victims in Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and any other state(s),” the committee pleaded.

  • PDP not committed to peace accord- BMO

The alleged threat by the People’s Democratic Party ( PDP ) to pull out of the peace accord they signed with the National Peace Committee has continued to receive reaction with the Buhari Media Organization (BMO) saying the party and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar were never committed to the peace deal in the first place.

The PDP had in a statement on Wednesday threatened to pull out of the peace accord over comments made by governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El-Rufai that foreign observers who interfere in the electoral process will leave the country in body bags.

Reacting to the threat, chairman of BMO Niyi Akinsiju, said the former Vice President and his party grudgingly signed the peace pact in the first place.

He said it took intensive pressure on PDP’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar before he “grudgingly consented to sign the peace accord not more than 48 hours after all willing consenters to the accord had done so.

“In issuing this threat at this time is in furtherance of the PDP’s Dubai agenda to build a case for the disruption of the presidential election or at the minimum, create a perception of ill will around the election with intent at discrediting the election which they know they will lose even before they commenced formal campaign.

“To advance their evil agenda, in their desperation, they have continued to throw all manners of tantrums, rubbishing institutions of States without any modicum of patriotism and civility.”
The BMO leader however assured that no matter the threat from the main opposition party, “the presidential election will be held peacefully and creditably well to their shame.”

National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu Onilu could not be reached for his reaction at the time of this report.

Meanwhile, when the case came up before Justice Mohammed Tukur of Kaduna State High Court 5 on Wednesday, Counsels to the defendants urged the court to grant them bail, arguing that, the offences they were being accused of were ordinarily bailable.

Meanwhile, the prosecuting counsel, Onyeka Ekweozor, urged the court discard the bail applications of the defence counsels. He argued that, though the offences were bailable, granting the defendants bail was capable of jeopardizing the case.

He said, the defendants operate as a syndicate, some of whom were at large. And that, granting them bail will make it difficult to apprehend others.

The EFCC lawyer also argued that, the defendants don’t have fixed addresses, as they were arrested at various locations like hotel and airport, among others. “This is even as the crimes they are charged for are still continuing.”

But, counsel to the first defendant, Abubakar A. Ashat, who led other defendants’ counsels in oral bail application for their clients said, arguments of the prosecuting counsel were so watery, as the offences in question were ordinarily bailable.

On the addresses of his clients and other defendants, Ashat said, “the valid address of my client and others are in their statements, and the prosecuting counsel has not told this court that, those addresses are not valid. So, the argument on their addresses does not hold water. And let say the addresses are even not valid, the sureties are going to stand for them and ensure they appear in court anytime the case comes up.” He argued.

The Judge who earlier read the two count charges to the defendants, who pleaded not guilty adjourned the case till 21st of January, for hearing of the bail applications.

Justice Mohammed Tukur, however, ruled that the five defendants be remanded in EFCC custody till the next adjourned date.
