  • Customs confiscates N572m goods, arrests 11

    The Federal Operations Unit, Zone B of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kaduna, confiscated goods with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N572 million in the past three months.

    The Controller of the unit, Comptroller Mohammed Mustapha, made this known on Wednesday in Kaduna while taking journalists round the confiscated goods.

    He said that 11 suspects were arrested in connection with the seized goods, adding that they would be charged to court at the conclusion of investigations.

    Mustapha said that confiscated items included trucks and smuggled rice, spaghetti and vegetable oil loaded on them.

    He said that the NCS also impounded 12 other vehicles including J5, Sharon, Passat and golf which were conveying smuggled 3,200 cartoons of spaghetti and secondhand clothes.

    The official said that one of the seized trucks carried 350 bags of 50kg foreign rice concealed in bags of maize.

  • That Kaduna may not burn

    In Kaduna where a mere rumour ignites large scale violence, a coalition of concerned citizens and groups has mounted a campaign to keep the state calm as election nears. ABDULGAFAR ALABELEWE reports

    The 2015 general elections were relatively peaceful in Kaduna State, but the polls four years earlier were not. They left scars that are still fresh seven years after.

    Kaduna is just one out of about 14 states affected by the 2011 post-election violence, but it has suffered more. This is because some of the ethno-religious violence including killings, especially in the southern Kaduna, are believed to reprisals of the 2011 post election violence.

    Therefore, as part of measures to ensure that the state is not thrown into another round of crisis, the Vote Not Fight campaign group has launched a campaign against electoral violence in the state. Similarly, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) held a town hall meeting in Kaduna with relevant stakeholders to ensure that violence-free elections in 2019 is achievable with all hands on deck.

    The Vote Not Fight campaign project organized by the One Project Afrika (OPA), 2Baba Foundation, National Democratic Institute (NDI) USAID and UKAID, held training for selected cordinators across the 23 local government areas to spread the mesaage of violence free election

    In a welcome address, the Executive Director OPA, Zigwai Ayuba said there is need to change the narrative about the state positively, adding that the launch and training is basically to sensitive the selected coordinators who are youths on why they should not allow themselves to be used to perpetrate violence as we go into the elections.

    “The youths must shun all forms of violence and politicians must shun all forms of hate speeches that will over heat the polity.

    “The vote not fight campaign is to educate the electorates as to why they should exercise their civic rights without engaging in any form of violence or allow themselves to be pushed into violence”.

    On his part, the Programme Manager Youth and People with Disabilities (PWD) of the NDI, Mr Ben Aga noted that the youths are the mostly affected during electoral violence either as perpetrators or victims.

    He stressed that the vote not fight campaign launch and training of coordinators who will trickle the training to the ward levels is part of efforts to quaranttee a peaceful, fair, free and credible elections without recourse to whoever wins and under whatever political party.

    In his goodwill message, the Kaduna state Administrative Secretary of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Alhaji Mohammed Mashi who commended the organizers of the program, called on the youths to do what is right and at all times devoid of any form of sentiments on grounds of tribe, religion, party or ethnicity.

    He assured that the 2019 election will not only be free, fair and credible, it would be an improvement over previous elections ever held in this country.

    Meanwhile, the police representative, SP Abdulazeez Isa in his goodwill message said, “Youths must be watchful with their activities before, during and after the elections, stressing that the police will not hesitate to deal decisively with anyone who ferment or partake in any form of violence.

    The NUJ Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Yusuf on his part assured that the media will collaborate with relevant agencies towards a free, fair and credible polls in 2019.

    Similarly, the one day town hall meeting organized by Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) on “benefits of violence free elections 2019 in Kaduna State” had participants drawn from  police, KASTLEA, Prisons, Customs, Airforce, Immigration, Military, CSOs, political parties, Religious and traditional leaders among other relevant election stakeholders.

    The town hall meeting was organized to bring together relevant stakeholders to sensitize them on the dangers and implications of electoral violence before, during and after the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

    In his opening remarks, the Kaduna state Commandant of the NSCDC, Alhaji Modu Bunu who equally represented the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu harped on the need for all to work together not to only make the 2019 election free, fair and credible but also violence free.

    Similarly, the Resident Representative of KAS in Nigeria, Dr Vladimir Kreck who was represented at the town hall meeting by the Program Manager, Mr Samson Adeniran in his welcome address highlighted the benefits of having a violence free elections while outlining the ideals of the KAS which he said include democracy, rule of law and prosperity for all.

    In his keynote presentation on the theme of the town hall meeting, Professor Chukwuma CCC Osakwe of the department of History and War studies, centre for the study of leadership and complex operations , Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) took an x-ray of history of conflicts and violence in Kaduna State and drew the conclusion that previous conflicts influenced the recent electoral violence in the state.

    He noted that any future electoral violence will affect food security, personal security, investment, government income, education and general trust among different ethnic groups that have being living together in the state since before independence

    Key stakeholders which include Alhaji Abdullahi Kaugama (the Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC), Commissioner of police Ahmed Abdulrahman (CP Kaduna State), Mr. Usman Mohammed (Chairman Board of Trustees, the Negotiators Peace Initiative, Kaduna), Grace Bahago for KASU  all made various inputs on having a violence free elections in Kaduna.

    The town hall meeting was declared open by the State Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai represented by the AIG Mohammed Abbas (rtd) Special Adviser of security and coordinator state owned security outfit ‘Operation Yaki’.

    With sensitization fora like these, it is expected that the message will sink and people will realise that no election is worth the blood of any soul.

  • Fashola wants effective monitoring of projects by Works Controllers

    The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has called on Federal Controllers of Works in the country to be proactive and committed to effective monitoring of projects.

    Fashola made the call on Monday in Kaduna at the opening of a capacity-building workshop organised by the ministry for the 37 Federal Controllers of Works in the country.

    The theme of the workshop is “Learning and Development for Greater Stature”.

    The minister said that the controllers were being trained to change the way public officers responded to their assignments “and begin to see roads as their projects’’.

    “We are pushing an agenda with the civil service, starting with the controllers that getting to the next level is a matter of what you do and how it affects human life.

    “So, we expect that at the end of the workshop, we will see project components and for them as controllers, their projects will be the roads.

    “We are going to access them by `motorability’ of roads in their various states,” he said.

    He said that the controllers would be trained on leadership and emotional intelligence, adding that electronic gadgets would be given to them.

    The minister said that the idea was to create a platform for them to interact with each other and give feedback to the ministry for effective decisions.

    He said that the ministry had got a budget for the controllers and that it was the first of its kind in many years.

    “We plan to give each controller N50 million to start and the case for improved budgetary provision will be made on the basis of what happen with what we have done.

    “Before we do that, we have asked them to submit work plans on the roads in their territory that have problems and they have all complied.

    “We have gone through them and that is why we are able to move to this level,” he added.

    The Federal Controller of Works, Kaduna State, Mr Finbarr Zirra, commended the ministry for the initiative.

    He said that the controllers would be better equipped to discharge their duties at the end of the training.

    He said that the knowledge to be acquired would help the participants to achieve their goals, get value for money as well as accomplish government programmes.

  • 2019: My re-election almost a done deal – El-Rufai

    Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai on Monday said that his re-election is almost a done deal, despite the risks he has taken on his path to make Kaduna great again.

    The said though, getting re-elected as the governor of the state is not paramount in his agenda, but doing the right thing.

    El-Rufai who stated this while speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the 2018 National Council on Finance and Economic Development (NACOFED) conference holding in Kaduna, said his administration in the past three and half years undertook far reaching reforms in the education, economic and health sectors with outstanding results.

    He said his immediate and utmost priority is to put the state on the right track and sound footing, while his achievements and reforms in all sectors will naturally take care of his re-election to consolidate on the achieved successes.

    According to him, “being re-elected is not important. What is important is doing the right thing and posterity will judge us. From all indications, from everything I have seen because we call regularly, we are very scientific, we don’t guess in the dark.

    “Inspite of all the risks we have taken and all the people we are supposed to have upset, the election on the second of March, 2019 as far as Kaduna State is concern is almost a done deal,” he said.

    In the economic sector, he disclosed that his administration has created lots of jobs and empowered the women folks with soft loan with plans to do more going forward.

    He also informed that plans are under way to recruit no fewer than 3000 health workers to further boost the health sector.

    On the ease of doing business, the governor said, before he took over the mantle of leadership, Kaduna state occupied the twentieth position in ranking on ease of doing business in 2014, “but as at 2018, Kaduna State occupies the first position in the ease of doing business”.

    In the area of security and Judiciary, he disclosed that his administration has so far hired 75 lawyers to boost the state judiciary sector, just as a said, his administration has removed the tenure system for directors and permanent Secretaries to open doors for young people.

    The 3-day NACOFES conference organized by the Federal Account Allocation Committee in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Finance is expected to among other paper presentations look into alternative sources of revenue generation outside oil.

  • Fed Govt invests over N13.5b in Kaduna social investment programme

    Ahead of next year’s general elections, the Federal Government has said President Muhammadu Buhari is leading the revolutionary of executing the largest social investment programme in Nigeria’s history.

    A statement by the Federal Ministry of Finance said the minister, Mrs Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, noted that since the inception of the Federal Government’s National Social Investment Programme (NSIP), Kaduna State had benefited over N13.5 billion from it.

    A statement by the Special Adviser to the Minister on Media and Communications, Mr Paul Ella Abechi, said the minister acknowledged that “there is still more grounds to be covered”.

    It said the minister but emphasised that the Federal Government was committed to the programme.

    The statement said Mrs Ahmed spoke at the weekend at the Federal College of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State, during the disbursement of empowerment funds to women of Zone 1 in the state.

    She said: “the Federal Government, through the NSIP, since inception, began implementing a number of programmes targeted at improving the lives of Nigerians, especially the poor and vulnerable members of our society. Kaduna State, fortunately, is a beneficiary of all the interventions that make up the NSIP, with investment exceeding N13.5 billion.

    “There are over 18,000 N-Power volunteers in Kaduna State in addition to 585 N-Power build trainees. For these beneficiaries, we have expended over N4 billion.”

    The NSIP is also addressing the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, which the government said “has so far reached over 1 million pupils in about 4,000 schools and has created a sustainable means of livelihood for the over 12,000 women engaged as cooks under the programme. On this programme in Kaduna State alone, we have spent, on your behalf, over N8 billion”.

    Another component of the NSIP, the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), the minister said, “has given about N1 billion to almost 20,000 beneficiaries”.

    She added: “The poorest of the poor have begun benefitting from the National Cash Transfer Programme. In Kaduna State, 10,482 persons have benefitted from a total of N314 million.”

    Mrs Ahmed, who reiterated the need for support from state governments, lauded the efforts of the state government, especially with regards to KADSWEF, which the minister pleaded “is a superb support to our efforts. I have also been informed that the state government has announced the expansion of the fund to N400 million in 2019, N800 million in 2020 and N1 billion subsequently.”

    She added: “This is a lot of investment that, if made and properly utilised by the women beneficiaries, will ensure that a lot of grounds will be covered in our strides towards empowerment of women downtrodden, and small and medium entrepreneurs. To those who are yet to benefit, take solace in the fact that KADSWEF has been announced to be an ongoing and incremental programme. Next year may be your turn.”

  • Police arrest 22 suspected armed robbers, kidnappers in Kaduna

    The Kaduna State Police Command on Wednesday said it arrested 22 suspects involved in armed robbery, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

    The State Commissioner of Police (CP), Abdur-Rahman Ahmad, made the disclosure at a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Kaduna.

    Ahmad said that seven of the suspects were nabbed in connection to alleged criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.

    According to him, four of the suspects were also arrested for criminal conspiracy and kidnapping, while two suspects were arrested for criminal conspiracy and impersonation.

    He said five suspects were also arrested in connection with cheating, criminal conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property.

    Ahmad said one suspect was arrested for criminal intimidation by anonymous Communication and three suspects for criminal conspiracy, burglaryand theft

    He said the recoveries made included two locally made Revolver Barrel Pistols, one locally made pistol, three 9MM live ammunition, 14 sets of plasma television and one laptop computer,

    Ahmad said that three phones (Nokia, 1 Samsung and 1 Vivo Android), a tricycle (Keke Napep), one cutlass and assorted charms were also recovered from the suspects.

    The CP said he feels delighted to intimate the public of the command’s recent breakthrough in combating crime and criminality in the state.

    He said that the suspects currently undergoing investigation would be prosecuted as soon as Police investigations were completed.

    The CP also reassured members of the public of the Command’s willingness to fight all forms of crime and criminality in the state.

    He said his command enjoyed kind support and understanding from members of the public through prompt and relevant information that assisted in exposing unscrupulous elements among them.

    The Commissioner enjoined all stakeholders in politics to play it by the rules and desist from hampering the peace the state had been enjoying .

    “The Kaduna State Police Command will not hesitate to deal decisively with any person or group that directly or indirectly does any act that can bring about disharmony in the state or any part thereof,” he said.

    Ahmad equally appealed to the people of the state to continue to live in peace with one another and avoid using social media platforms to spread fake news or speeches capable of inciting violence or breaching the peace.

    He commended members of the press for continually creating public awareness especially on Security Early Warning Signs.

    He also commended journalists for being a window through which our successes are exposed to the good members of the public”, adding that the command remained committed to flush criminals out of the state. (NAN)

  • Seamstress bags five month imprisonment

    A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna on Monday sentenced a 35-year-old seamstress, Martina Felix, to five months imprisonment for absconding with her customer’s fabrics.

    The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Felix, a resident of Kudenden in Kaduna, after she pleaded guilty to a two-count of criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    Emmanuel, however, gave the convict an option to pay N5, 000 fine.

    He ordered the convict to pay additional N33, 000 as damages for the materials and another N15, 000 for expenses incurred during her prosecution.
    Emmanuel said the convict would get additional one-month imprisonment if she defaulted in her payments.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, had told the court that Mercy John of Nasarawa in Kaduna State, reported the case at the Kudenden Police Station in Kaduna on Oct. 12.

    Leo said the complainant gave the accused some fabrics to sew in March which she failed to sew.

    “The accused did not make the clothes as agreed and all effort to get the fabrics from her proved abortive.

    “Felix absconded with the fabrics to an unknown destination until she was seen and arrested,” he said.

    Leo said the offence contravened Sections 217 and 292 of the Criminal Law of Kaduna State, 2017.

  • Army offers free medical treatment in Kaduna

    The Nigerian Army Artillery Corps on Thursday offered free medical treatment and donated 2,000 treated mosquito nets to Adara community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

    The outreach included health education, diabetic screening, dental consultation, eye screening and issuance of eye glasses.

    The three-day medical exercise is expected to end on Nov. 15.

    The Chief of Army Staff,Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, said the free medical treatment for the community was part of activities to mark the annual exercise Vulcan Glow six.

    Buratai disclosed that no specific number of people are targeted but based on records, so far, over 1,700 people have been attended to and more are coming.

    Buratai, represented by the Commander Infantry Corps, Maj.-Gen. Hakeem Otiki, solicited the support of the civil populace within their localities to enable it carry out its constitutional role effectively.

    He explained that the outreach was part of army’s efforts towards promoting civil-military relations, and urged well-meaning individuals and agencies to emulate the gesture of assisting the downtrodden.

    The army chief expressed delight over the large turnout of beneficiaries and assured that the exercise would be sustained.

  • Farmer bags nine months imprisonment for breach of trust

    A Daura Road Upper Sharia Court, Kaduna, on Thursday sentenced a 35-year-old farmer, Abdullahi Abdulraheem, to nine months imprisonment for criminal breach of trust and cheating.

    The judge, Alhaji Aminu Jumare, however, gave the convict an option of N20,000 fine.

    Jumare also ordered Abdulraheem to pay N750,000 as compensation to the nominal complainant.

    He advised the convict to desist from committing crime, adding that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other would be offenders.

    “It pays to be honest and not to cheat people,’’ Jumare said.

    Abdulraheem, who resides at Kattingo Road, Tudun Wada, Kaduna, had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    The convict told the court that he used the money for an emergency.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Shehu Abdullahi, had told the court that one Sagir Lawal of Captain Road, Kasuwan Mashi, Kaduna, reported the matter at the Gabasawa Police Station, Kaduna, on Nov. 10.

    Abdullahi said that the complainant sometimes in December 2014, entrusted N750,000 to the convict for the purpose of buying some foodstuffs to enable him start a business.

    He said that the convict collected the money, converted it to his personal use and later absconded to an unknown destination until he was seen and arrested.

    The prosecutor added that Abdulraheem confessed to the crime during police investigation and begged for mercy.

    Abdullahi said the offences violated the provisions of Sections 297 and 307 of the Kaduna State Penal Code 2017

  • Labourer gets 12 strokes of cane for smoking

    A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna, On Thursday ordered that a 23-year-old labourer, Mustapha Jibrin, be given 12 strokes of the cane for smoking at a notorious black spot.

    Jibrin, a resident of Ungwan Sarki in Kaduna, was convicted after pleading guilty to a one-count charge of constituting public nuisance.

    Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel passed the sentence after the convict begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

    Emmanuel said the court had indeed tempered justice with mercy because the convict was a first time offender.

    He advised the boy to be of good behavior, and enjoined his guardian, who was present in court, to advice him properly.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Leo Chidi, told the court that the convict was arrested at a black spot at Ungwan Sarki, Kaduna on Nov 5.

    According to Chidi, the convict and his friends had been caught smoking at the spot on many occasions and were warned to stay away from the spot.

    He said that a team of policemen attached to Gabasawa Police Station led by Inspector Abu Mohammed, arrested the convict on Nov. 5 when he failed to adhere to the instruction while his friends escaped.

    He added that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 199 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
