  • Kajuru crisis: Adara community requires N50m to rebuild 545 houses

The Adara Community in Kajuru Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna state says it requires about N50 million to rebuild 545 houses destroyed by gunmen following series of attacks.

The Chairman of the community Mr Mumini Madugu, disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Sunday.

He said the attacks left thousands of the Adara people homeless.

Madugu said the community came under attacks few days after a statement from the Government House Kaduna on Feb. 15, alleging that a number of Fulani people including women and children have been killed by the locals.

He said series of attacks launched between Feb. 10 and March 11, left 148 people dead and 545 houses destroyed

“The attackers in their hundreds first invaded Unguwan Barde, killed 35 people and destroyed 90 houses and proceeded to Karamai village on Feb. 2, killed 42 people and destroyed 196 houses.

“On March 11, Dogon Noma community was also attacked, 71 people were killed, and 259 houses destroyed, making a total of 148 people killed and 545 houses destroyed.

“In all the attacks, 65 people were seriously injured and currently in hospitals receiving treatment, while about N28 million worth of grains and other food stuff were also burnt.
“These attacks have displaced thousands of our people including 2,000 children who are currently taking shelter in eight camps across three LGAs of the state -Chikun, Kajuru and Kachia,” he said.

The chairman called on government at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians to come to their aid and help them rebuild their houses so they can return home.
He thanked government agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations, community organisations and civil society organisations for supporting them with relief materials.

One of the elders, Mr Usman Stingo that the area has a history of peaceful coexistence with settlers including the Hausa and Fulani people.

Stingo, a retired teacher particularly described the relationship between the Adara people and the Fulani as a symbiotic one dating far back to the days of their fore fathers.
He, however, said that the relationship began to deteriorate in 2017 over a relationship between a Hausa boy and an Adara girl which led to a communal clash resulting in loss of lives and property.

“Also, on Oct. 18, 2018, another misunderstanding occurred at Kasuwan Magani and escalated into serious crises that claimed more than 100 lives.
“A day after that, the Chief of Adara was kidnapped and murdered. And since then, Kajuru LGA and the Adara people have always been on the news but for the wrong reasons,” he said.

The elder blamed the series of attacks in the community on government’s inability to perform its duty of protecting lives and property.

“Hardly will anyone convince us that local Fulani in Kajuru are responsible for these attacks, because the accent of the attackers was completely different from that of the Fulani people who live with us.

“We do not believe that the Fulani that we lived with for ages can suddenly have a change of attitude and turned brutal.

“We are of the view that the attackers might have been hired mercenaries, but who hired them is a question we do not have answers to,” he said.

On how to restore the lost relationship, the elder stressed on the need for the Adara and Fulani elders to close ranks whenever something of this nature comes up and fish out the culprits.

“But leaving one group to go searching for who attacked only gives room for suspicions and mistrust which if not properly managed could escalate into a serious crisis with unimaginable consequences.

“The State Government must also ensure justice and fairness to all and be a government for all by particularly improving security in the state and bringing the assailants to book,” he said.(NAN)

Kaduna State Police Commissioner Ahmad Abdur-Rahman has confirmed that 29 persons died in Tuesday’s gunmen attack on Karmai village in Kajuru Local Government Area.

The police chief, who addressed reporters in Kaduna, also said 40 houses were razed in attack.

He said: “I feel obliged to brief you on the recent sad incident at Kajuru Local Government Area. “The attackers also torched about 40 houses in the community.”

Abdur-Rahman said he had gone round the communities with the Garrison Commander of 1 Division of the Army, Brig.-Gen. O. J. Akpor and other senior police and military officers for on-the-spot assessment to build confidence in the residents.

The police chief enjoined them to live in peace with one another as he sympathised with the affected community.

  • 100 houses razed, many feared killed in Kaduna

    •El-Rufai condemns attack, visits President

Barely two weeks after a violent crisis that claimed lives of many citizens in Kajuru Local Government area of Kaduna State, there were reports of fresh attacks in some villages in the Kajuru and Kachia local government areas.

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El Rufai was at the State House yesterday. He held talks with President Muhammadu Buhari.

El-Rufai declined to state his mission at the Presidential Villa but it was believed that the governor may have used the opportunity to brief the president on the fresh violent attacks in his domain.

The attacks, The Nation learnt, occurred in the early hours of yesterday. Bandits were said to have stormed Karamai village in Maro District of the council area, leaving in their trail more than 100 houses and vehicles razed.

An eye witness said: “The renewed attacks on the villages came as armed bandits, numbering about 100, stormed our village, Karamai community with dangerous weapons, including guns and machetes. As at now, we have counted many dead bodies.

“As I am speaking with you now, many people have fled the villages, many people have entered bush, running for their lives. There are no security agents in sight to stop the attackers.”

The military said that troops have already been deployed to restore peace to the affected communities.

Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Muhammed Dole, told reporter that, security agents, have been dispatched Kasuwan Magani to restore peace.

The Army spokesman, however, warned communities to desist from giving wrong statistics to avoid misconception and distortion of facts and figure before investigation.

The Kaduna State government condemned the renewed attacks, urging residents to support the security agencies in their efforts to protect the communities.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan, Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed sadness over the renewed attacks at a time efforts were being intensified to restore security in areas where scores reportedly killed a few days ago.

The statement reads: “Kaduna State Government has today received the sad news of renewed attacks in Kajuru and Kachia local government areas. The government condemns this recourse to violence, and calls on all communities to support the efforts to restore calm in the area.

“Today, the Kaduna State Government was briefed by security agencies of renewed attacks in Kajuru local government area, and in parts of neighboring Kachia Local Government Area.

“The Kaduna State government has been assured that the security agencies are working assiduously to contain the situation.

“The government is saddened by these attacks, condemns the perpetrators and urges all residents of the area to support the security agencies in their efforts to protect communities.”

  • Kajuru killings: El-Rufai says death toll now 130

Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai yesterday berated those questioning the veracity of his allegation that 66 people were killed in the recent attack in Kajuru Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, the death toll has risen to 130.

He had last Friday raised the alarm that unknown gunmen killed 66 persons in the area, while some Nigerians had faulted the claims.

Briefing reporters after a security meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, El-Rufai said that he has applied for the deployment of military personnel in flashpoint areas in the state to ensure adequate security during the forthcoming elections.

The latest figure, he said, was contained in a report provided through an on-going investigation by the Police.

He said: “Now, what we are hearing, the last report we got is that over 130 people were killed not even 66.”

El-Rufai, who was joined by governors Mohammed Bindow (Adamawa) and Kashim Shettima (Borno); as well as the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, Femi Adesina, said Fulani leaders have already indicated interest to provide the full list of those killed in the attack to the government.

He also assured that his government was ready to make public, the pictures of the victims and footages of how the army had to be there to help bury the dead two days after they were killed because their bodies were decomposing.

The governor described those trying to dispute his position as chief security officer of the state on the killings as grossly irresponsible people.

He said: “Now, what we are hearing, the last report we got is that, over 130 people were killed not even 66. And the Fulani leaders are providing the names of all these people, we have the list and we will release it to the press.

“And I don’t want to be groused but we can release pictures of the people killed and how the army had to be there to help bury them two days after they were killed because the bodies were decomposing, but some people are being irresponsible. They are pretending this has not happened because it does not fit their ethnic or partisan narrative. It is totally irresponsible because this can happen to anyone of us.”

He also explained that the reason behind his appeal to the affected people for calm was because he knew that those that lost their relations could take the laws into their own hands for revenge unless they believe to have seen that the government was doing something to secure justice.

El-Rufai said that during the meeting with President Buhari, he requested for enhanced military presence during the forthcoming election on February 23 and March 9 in the state.

The governor said: “In Kaduna State, we requested for enhanced military presence in particular locations that are either affected by rural banditry; these are the local government of Birnin-Gwari/Giwa Angchukwu and areas where there has been a history of either electoral violence or ethno-religious intolerance.

“We have already mapped out local arrangements with the garrison commander and the commissioner of police and we have made adequate arrangements to ensure that every citizen of Kaduna State will be free to vote in an atmosphere of peace and security.

“We got assurances from Mr. President that whatever security assets we need in addition to what is already on ground to ensure peaceful abs hitch-free elections on Saturday, those assets will be provided. All we need to do is ask.”

He also explained that yesterday’s meeting between the President and the heads of security agencies was primarily focused on the states that have higher than average security challenges, adding that four state governors (Yobe, Borno, Adamawa and Kaduna) were invited.

He said that the northeast states were discussed because of the history of Boko Haram insurgency, while Kaduna state was as a result of the recent crisis affecting parts of the state.

He said: “The governor of Borno State submitted a comprehensive brief on the situation in Borno and Yobe states for which he is very familiar having been on the seat for eight years.

“The governor of Adamawa State presented a situation report regarding Adamawa and I submitted a briefing based on what has been happening in Kaduna State in the last few weeks and months.

“We noted the significant improvement in the security situation across our states in spite of the challenges and thank the Federal Government for making available the security assets to the states any time we needed them which has led to some level of stability of the situation.

“Across the states, we are ready for elections; we do not believe that the level of challenges will preclude elections not taking place all over our states. Of course, in the case of Borno State other than one or two local governments that may vote outside of their immediate domain, every voter in Borno State will vote in his or her local government, compared to the situation in 2015 that some voters in Borno State had to vote in Maiduguri. This is not the case this time.

“In Adamawa State, apart from Madagali that is close to Sambisa, there had been no major challenges. Even there, with enhanced security presence, we are confident that there will be no problems at all conducting elections.”

  • SOKAPU to El-Rufai: exhume victim’s corpses to justify 130 casualty figure

As Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai on Tuesday disclosed that the death toll from the recent killings in Kajuru local government area of the state has risen to 130, mouthpiece of the southern Kaduna people, the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) has asked the Governor to prove his claim.

SOKAPU President, Solomon Musa, a lawyer in a telephone interview with The Nation asked Governor El-Rufai to justify his 130 casualty figure claims, by exhuming victims’ bodies to show the world.

Musa said, in the history of several other crises in Southern Kaduna, Governor El-Rufai had never come out to disclose figures of casualties and ethnic nationalities of the victims, except now.

According to him, “information available to me has it that, on Sunday, 11 people were killed in Ungwan Barde, and up till now that I am talking to you, the Governor has not visited that place. So, it becomes very suspicious.

“Now, I don’t want to bother on the issue of whether 66 people or 130 people were killed or not, because every human life is sacred, and the life of a Fulani man is as precious as the life of an Adara person, the life of a Muslim is as precious as the life of a Christian. So, it is not about number.

“But, assuming it is so, one would expect that the bodies would be there. One would expect that, if there are questions on the number of people, it should get to the point of exhuming, but 66 people dying on Friday, and by the next day, the bodies are not there? They were already buried? All these become suspicious

“Assuming 66 people truly died on the eve of the suspended election. Let me tell you, it appears… The Governor in August last year held a meeting with Pastors and said, Southern Kaduna people love violence. And we issued a press statement in September, asking him why would he say that? We suspected him of planning something towards the election, we said it our press statement and there was no refutal from the state government.

“When there was crisis in Kasuwan Magani late last year, we didn’t hear the Governor saying so so number or Adara people or Fulani were killed. In the case of Kajuru, even if it were to be only Adara people that were killed, I don’t expect the Governor on the eve of an important election to announce that, 11 Adara people were killed, because doing that, and then telling the people not to carry out reprisal attack, what is that? This is a father the state for crying out loud.

“That is why we said that, it appears the Governor is saying that, because he has a purpose. And the purpose is simple, as far as we are concerned is that, if there is crisis, the election will be postponed, then, who stands to benefit from it? I would expect that what he ought to have done at that time is to get the people around to douse the tension, rather than doing what he did.

“So, what we are saying is is that it is even possible for 1,000 people to have been killed, but responsibility is on you to proof it if questions are raised. I am being scientific about it, if you say 66 it even 130 people were killed, then, you get medical team, get permission of the court, then you go and exhume and say look at the bodies.” SOKAPU President stressed.

  • Kajuru Carnage: Death toll rises to 130 – El-Rufai

Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state says the death toll as a result of the communal clash in the Kajuru Local Government Area of the state has risen to 130 as against the previous figure of 66.

El-Rufai stated this when he spoke to State House correspondents after briefing a security meeting which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.

The governor had on Friday through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Samuel Aruwan, disclosed that 66 people were killed by unknown attackers in Kajuru Local Government Area.

El-Rufai, who alongside the governors of Borno and Adamawa briefed members of the security committee on security situations in their respective states, frowned at those who questioned the initial casualties’ figures of 66.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that several individuals and organisations including the Southern Kaduna People’s Union (SOKAPU) and Human Rights Lawyer, Chidi Odinkalu had expressed doubt over the occurrence of the killings of the 66 persons.

He said: “The last report we got is that over 130 people were killed not even 66 and the Fulani leaders have provided the names of all these people.

”We have the list, we can release it to the Press and I don’t want to be gross but we can release pictures of the people killed and how soldiers have to be there to help bury them, two days after they were killed because the bodies were decomposing.

”Whoever still doubts that this did not happen is being grossly irresponsible.’’

The Ag. Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, who also spoke to the correspondents, said the police were ready to protect eligible Nigerians following resolution at the meeting that adequate security be provided within the country.

Adamu said: ”Today, members of the security community and intelligence community came and briefed Mr President on the security situation in the country.

“We deliberated on the consequences and came up with the resolve to further provide adequate security within the country so that the electorate will come out and cast their votes without any fear of molestation.

“Every Nigerian is encouraged to come out on the Election Day and cast his or her vote without any fear of molestation,” he said.

According to him, security personnel are ready and prepared to protect everybody.

He further warned that, “anybody that feels that he can come out and disrupt process should have a rethink because that situation will not be allowed.

“If you plan and allow yourself to be used as touts, whatever happens to you, you will take it.

“Ballot snatching, ballot buying, thuggery will never be allowed, anybody that is planning to snatch ballot boxes or planning to be used as a tout, will have his or herself to blame on the Election Day. So you better don’t allow yourself to be used.

  • Kaduna community deserted after deadly attack

The Fulani community in parts of Kajuru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, have abandoned the area after an attack on Feb. 11, which left 66 of them, mostly women and children dead.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that what remained of the Rugar Fulani community were burnt houses, animals, motorcycles, kitchen utensils, as well as were bodies of women and children buried in a ditch.

Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i, accompanied by General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigerian Army, the Police Commissioner and journalists who visited the villages on Saturday, found the entire area deserted with no humans in sight.

Speaking on the attack, the GOC, Major- Gen Faruk Yahaya said troops deployed to the area after the attack, assisted by some villagers, discovered 37 bodies of women and children buried in a ditch and the settlements burnt.

“We were informed that the women were lured by the miscreants to the stream, and on getting there, they were slaughtered.

“The figure of deaths recorded by us is 66, but in collaboration with sister agencies, we will ensure peace is restored and people return to their settlements”.

On his part, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmad AbdurRahman explained that though the police had mopped up the area, the residents still fled their settlements in fear of more attack.

He confirmed the arrest of seven suspects in connection with the attack, adding that they would be charged to court on Monday.

The police chief said investigation was continuing, adding that it was largely to  identify the miscreants and isolate them from the good people within the communities so as to restore lasting peace.

Also speaking, the governor lamented over the politicisation of the situation by being in denial of the real issues at stake.

“Some leaders are living in denial. They are saying only 11 were killed and the security have said 66 were killed while the community said over a hundred were killed and missing”, El-Rufa’i noted.

He advised the people to be vigilant, as those politicizing the issue have disregarded those that died simply because they were not from their tribes.

“All lives are sacred and equal, hence we must collectively bring an end to this menace,” he said.(NAN)
