2027: APC chieftain canvases Kalu’s return to Senate

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Dr. Sunday Okoro, has assessed the contest for the Abia North senatorial seat, stressing that any discussion on representation must be based on facts, measurable outcomes, and demonstrated impact.

In a statement he personally signed, Chief Okoro described Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the representative of Abia North in the Senate, as a leader whose accessibility, service record, and contributions have consistently improved the lives of constituents. He said the district must rally behind him to ensure continuity of effective representation.

He argued that leadership in a complex democracy like Nigeria’s is evaluated through tangible results rather than rhetoric.

“Throughout Abia North, Senator Kalu has consistently demonstrated commitment to infrastructure development, educational support, healthcare projects, youth empowerment, and direct engagement with constituents,” Okoro said.

“Roads have been rehabilitated, schools and health facilities supported, scholarships provided, and many constituents have benefited from employment facilitation, skills training, and humanitarian interventions. These are not abstractions; they are realities experienced by families, communities, and traditional institutions.”

He added that critics often overlook the fact that effective representation depends on influence, experience, and political capital — qualities he said Senator Kalu possesses.

“Abia North’s visibility at the highest levels of national decision-making has been strengthened by his seniority, national reach, and institutional connections. At a time when marginalisation is a genuine concern, Abia North cannot trade established influence for uncertainty,” he said.

Chief Okoro commended Senator Kalu’s inclusive leadership style, noting that his approach is rooted in direct interaction with the people.

“He listens, intervenes, and responds, often going beyond statutory obligations. His approach reflects a deep understanding of the socioeconomic realities in Abia North and a willingness to deploy personal and political resources to bridge gaps in government processes.”

As the 2027 elections approach, Okoro said the question before the district is not whether to discard experience, but how to maximise it for sustained development.

“Consistency in leadership, when backed by performance and community impact, is a strategic advantage. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has earned the trust of Abia North through his actions and commitment. The district deserves representation that is proven and result-driven. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu remains that leader,” he stated.

Kalu, Orji, others endorse Tinubu for second term

Former governors of Abia State, Senators Orji Uzor Kalu, Theodore Ahamefula Orji and other political stakeholders in the state have unanimously endorsed the reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for second tenure.

The political leaders made up of political office holders from 1999-2027, known as Team 1999-2007, who met in Umuahia, the state capital, at the Azikiwe residence of former governor Orji also vowed to drag the governor of the state, Dr. Alex Otti to court for running the state from his Isiala Ngwa South local government area residence.

The political leaders who expanded the team to accommodate those that served the state during Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu said that the lawsuit to be filed against Otti would be to compel him to move to Government House in Umuahia and stop running the affairs of the state from his private home.

In a nine point communiqué signed by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, chairman; Senator Orji, 1st vice chairman and Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, 2nd vice chairman, and read by the former national chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Ike Oye, members were urged to redouble their efforts and work for the re-election of President Tinubu.

The team who also commended President Tinubu for appointing ex-Governor Ikpeazu as Ambassador designate, asked aggrieved members to forget the past and forge ahead to work for the growth of the group.

Speaking earlier, leader of the team, Senator Kalu said the group is a social cultural organisation with the aim of bettering the lots of Abians.

“The team has three ex-governors from the three senatorial zones of the state. People have called us names and accused us of doing nothing in the past 24 years, but if nothing was done, will there still be Abians?”

Describing the team as one family, Kalu urged members to forget the past and work for the future.

“I created Senator T. A Orji and he created Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, so if there is any difference between them, we are going to resolve that so we can move forward.”

Senator Orji thanked Senator Kalu and others who attended the meeting, promising they would do everything possible to move the state forward.

He urged all the members to forget the past and work for the good of the team and the state.

Former Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Chinedum Orji thanked Kalu for accepting to lead the team and his father, Senator Orji for hosting them.

He urged all members to close ranks in order to move the group forward and ensure a resounding victory for President Tinubu in 2027.

Other speakers, including chief Don Ubani, secretary of the Team; Eme Abali MBA and Mrs. Felicia Dimgba, all eulogised Kalu and Orji for the able way they have been piloting the affairs of the group.

They said it was unfortunate that someone would wake up overnight and boasted he was going to retire them from politics and vowed to resist any of such moves.

  • Senator Kalu replies Otti, says Tinubu, APC will win Abia in 2027

Senator Kalu replies Otti, says Tinubu, APC will win Abia in 2027

Former Abia State Governor and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has dismissed threats from Governor Alex Otti, asserting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates will secure a landslide victory in the state in the 2027 general elections.

Gov. Otti had recently vowed to prevent Senator Kalu from returning to the Senate in 2027.

Speaking to journalists at his Igbere country home on Thursday, following the distribution of food items to his constituents and party members across all 17 local government areas, Kalu challenged the governor and his party to an electoral contest. He expressed confidence that the APC would achieve overwhelming success in the forthcoming elections, contrary to Otti’s predictions.

Questioning why the governor and his media team were upset with his political engagement, Kalu stated, “You know that I have not for once said anything about the state government.”

“I consider the governor as my friend and for two years I have never criticised the governor.

“No governor can deny that he isn’t aware of whatever that his Chief Press Secretary writes.

“Three days ago they shot the first arrow because I said that I will work for the APC to win.

“In 2023, we worked for him to win and we are not going to do that again; We will work for our party to win. What is wrong with that? Is that why I should receive insults? That is not acceptable to me and I am going to work for my party.

“I worked for him (Otti). Even my brother who was running for governor in APP (All Peoples Party), I called him to cooperate with him (Otti) because we are going to support him and that is the truth.”

Assessing Otti’s government in the past two years, Senator Kalu said “If he has done better, I don’t know about that because the money that I received in eight years is what Alex Otti receives in four months.

“He is just repainting and rebuilding the roads that I built as a governor between 1999 and 2007.

“I have not seen any new major road that he has done.

“I am in the Senate. All the roads that I am doing now are new farm roads. I have not seen him go into farm road.

“By two years time, I have done what people believed in this state which made then President Olusegun Obasanjo named me “Action Governor “.

“Under my watch in Abia, education was free, healthcare services was free. The truth is that, I have not seen what they have done.

“I know that he has tried rebuilding the road that I did; Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Ohafia road, which has stayed for so long (two years) before completion. I don’t know what they have done and why the noise in th social media. This business is not done on social media, it is done on the right time.

“My support for him is gone. It’s for the APC now.”

On the statement that he will fail in his Senatorial ambition in 2027, Kalu said, “history will show who will fail.

“Otti said that people should write their Will. I have never rigged election before. Nobody has ever accused me of that and I don’t so that.

“Even the people that took me to court didn’t take me to court that I rigged election anywhere and I don’t do that and I don’t support that. We want the will of the people to prevail.

“This is two years to the election and I want to tell you that we are very prepared. I can tell you that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will win the state. We will win the three Senatorial District Seats and you will see it.

“I am on the field. Before, I use to sit in Igbere, but now, I will leave my gate for the general good of the party.”

He refuted that APC in the state was balkanised, stressing that goal of every member of the APC in the state is to win election.

“I am not sure that Otti is going to join APC. I am not the owner of the party, if he (Otti) joins the party, well, what happened in 2023 will happen again.”

My words to abians is that, the OUK that they know is back. I am back in the field. They know that when I am in the field, the masses will rejoice. I am back because I want to be back.

Asked why he was going back to the senate, Kalu said “What am I doing in the senate that other senators are not doing? You can see that the development here is unprecedented.

“I can beat my chest to say that not up to 20 senators out of the 109 have done what I have done there in six years.

“Abia North and Abia State will be shortchanging themselves if they don’t send me back to the Senate.

“I am building roads and schools in Isiala Ngwa, I am building roads in Aba and every other place even though I am from Abia North.”

On perceived performance of Southeast political leaders who are not at par with their counterparts in other parts of the country, Kalu said “the President is the President of Nigeria and we are still Senators of Nigeria. We are still running paripasu. The class of 1999 is so blessed by God. President Yar’ Adua was class of 1999. President Tinubu is class of 1999. Maybe after the President, another class of 1999 will become the President of the country.

On creation of more states, the former Abia governor said “I cannot talk about state creation because constitutional amendment is a very difficult issue and if the President has the Will to do it and members of the National Assembly are united together, there will be creation of another state and I support creation of one state out of the existing five states.

“My opinion might be different from other persons opinion. For me, they should take somewhere in Imo, Anambra and Delta with capital in Oguta. I don’t care what name that they will call it, I have said this times without number. I am a man with fair mindedness and one who speaks the truth at all times. I believe that if the Igbos will come together and pursue the state that I am proposing, it will be me more viable.”

2027: Kalu defends Tinubu endorsement, slams Otti over criticism

The Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said his support for the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 is a legitimate exercise of his democratic rights and a clear affirmation of his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kalu also said his endorsement of Tinubu and advocacy for a strong APC governorship candidate in Abia State were driven by a commitment to national unity and development, rather than personal ambition.

He highlighted his legislative record, noting his role in attracting federal projects to Abia State, advancing South-East interests and promoting national cohesion.

The senator criticised Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, over what he described as a vitriolic reaction to his declaration of loyalty to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued by the Office of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and signed by George Maduka, the governor’s comments were described as politically desperate and lacking focus on governance, with the Abia State Government accused of engaging in what the statement termed gutter politics.

The statement dismissed claims that the senator’s position amounted to a declaration of political “war,” insisting that such expressions were normal in a democratic setting.

It faulted the governor’s response, which it said was characterised by personal attacks and references to what it described as imaginary challenges, adding that such language was unbecoming of a sitting governor.

The senator’s office further accused Governor Otti of hypocrisy, arguing that while he emerged through partisan mobilisation under the Labour Party, he now criticises others for openly supporting their political parties.

According to the statement, politics is rooted in competition, not entitlement.

It recalled that Senator Kalu had previously acknowledged Governor Otti as a political associate and had suggested that progressive-minded leaders could find space within the APC, which it said had delivered infrastructure, economic reforms and stability at the national level.

The statement also criticised what it described as the governor’s reliance on divine rhetoric to justify political authority, while allegedly downplaying the role of opposition in holding those in power accountable.

Questioning the governor’s reaction, the statement suggested that Otti’s comments may have been prompted by growing APC momentum in Abia State and increasing public dissatisfaction over unfulfilled promises.

It advised the governor to focus on governance priorities such as healthcare, youth unemployment and security, rather than engaging in confrontations with political opponents, adding that Abians deserved leadership anchored on development, not personal vendetta.

Reaffirming Senator Kalu’s political record, the statement said he had never shied away from electoral contests and that his victories were matters of public record. It challenged the governor to face the electorate on the basis of performance rather than rhetoric.

The statement concluded by urging Governor Otti to concentrate on governance and avoid name-calling, warning that time was running out for effective leadership.

It added that the APC’s ambition in Abia State was not about political conquest but about offering an alternative vision of governance.

    …commends Kalu’s support for president

The Renewed Hope Coalition, a pro-President Bola Ahmed Tinubu advocacy group, has hailed the Peace in the South East Project (PISE-P) initiated by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, for contributing to the relatively peaceful Yuletide season experienced in the South East region this year.

In a statement issued in Enugu, the National Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Coalition, Comrade Emmanuel Okoro, described the 2025 Christmas and New Year celebrations in the South East as a marked departure from previous years plagued by insecurity and enforced sit-at-home orders.

“Unlike in the past, when fear and tension dominated the festive period due to unrest, this year’s Yuletide has been remarkably calm, allowing families to travel home freely, reunite, and celebrate in peace,” Okoro said.

“We attribute this positive development largely to the non-kinetic approach of the Peace in the South East Project (PISE-P), convened by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.”

The group praised PISE-P’s focus on reconciliation, community engagement, and development initiatives as key factors in restoring stability and confidence in the region.

Launched in late 2023, the project has continued to promote dialogue and socio-economic programs aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity without reliance on military force alone.

The Renewed Hope Coalition also commended Rt. Hon. Kalu for his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

During his recent annual end-of-year town hall meeting in Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State, Kalu highlighted the fruits of the President’s bold economic reforms and expressed gratitude for the administration’s inclusive policies.

“We salute the Deputy Speaker for his steadfast loyalty to the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Okoro added.

“His legislative achievements, constituency projects, and peace-building efforts align perfectly with President Tinubu’s vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria.

“Kalu’s recent announcement of a ₦1 billion donation to support 2,000 MSME start-ups in Abia State, alongside palliatives and infrastructure developments, further demonstrates his commitment to uplifting the people.”

The group called on all stakeholders in the South East to sustain the momentum of peace and rally behind initiatives like PISE-P, while urging continued support for President Tinubu’s transformative leadership.

“As we enter 2026, the Renewed Hope Coalition remains confident that with leaders like Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu championing peace and progress, the South East will fully reclaim its position as the economic powerhouse of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.

Insecurity: Kalu urges governors to secure states, backs Tinubu

Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has called on governors across the country to take full responsibility for securing their states as a way of tackling insecurity nationwide.

Kalu said that during his tenure as governor of Abia State, the state was among the safest in the country due to his administration’s commitment to security.

He made the remarks on Thursday in Ekoli Edda, Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, while speaking with journalists during his New Year visit to the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State, Stanley Okoro Emegha.

The former governor urged Nigerians to stop placing the blame for insecurity on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that state governors have a critical role to play in addressing security challenges within their jurisdictions.

He singled out Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, as one of the few governors who have made notable efforts to secure the lives and property of their people.

Recalling his time in office, Kalu said Abia State remained safe even when other parts of the country experienced security breakdowns, stressing that no kidnapping incidents were recorded in the state due to decisive leadership and proactive security measures.

According to him, governors must emulate such commitment by taking direct charge of security in their states, noting that Nigeria would be safer if each state effectively addressed its internal security challenges.

Kalu also pledged to deliver Abia State to the APC in the 2027 general elections, declaring his readiness to work for the success of the party at both the presidential and gubernatorial levels.

Describing Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as his friend, Kalu said he would remain loyal to the APC and mobilise support for President Tinubu and the party’s candidates in the 2027 polls.

He expressed confidence that the APC would record electoral victories in Abia State, adding that he was fully committed to advancing the party’s interests ahead of the next general elections.

  • Deputy Speaker Kalu calls for police reform amid rising security challenges

Deputy Speaker Kalu calls for police reform amid rising security challenges

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called for comprehensive police reform, citing the failure of Nigeria’s centralised policing system to ensure security across the 36 states.

Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary debate on the country’s security situation, Kalu highlighted the multi-dimensional security challenges facing Nigeria and urged adequate funding for the police alongside the establishment of state and local government policing structures.

“Today is not about eloquence; it is about identifying our problems and proposing solutions as Parliament,” Kalu said. “Nigeria has strong deterrent laws, but we suffer from weak institutional implementation, inadequate funding, transparency issues, and misalignment between policy and execution. The solution requires structural legislative reform, not merely reactive military responses.”

Kalu detailed the escalating internal security threats, noting indiscriminate kidnappings targeting schools, places of worship, and communities in Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, and Sokoto.

He referenced recent incidents, including the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi, dozens of worshippers from Zungu Mosque in Zamfara, and Catholic priests in Anambra.

He also warned of armed groups imposing parallel governance structures, collecting millions of naira in community “taxes” in Tsafe, Zamfara, reflecting a shift from criminality to insurgent administrative control.

On the international front, Kalu noted Nigeria’s designation by the U.S. as a country of particular concern (CPC) and the potential implications of the proposed Nigerian Religious Freedom Accountability Act, which could target northern governors and other officials with sanctions.

“The Nigerian Police Force is constrained by centralised command, inadequate funding, and a lack of accountability. To address our multidimensional security crisis, legislative action is urgently needed,” he added.

“Number two is military modernisation, drones, and potential jet acquisition proceeding without a published defence policy on a robust legal framework. The next is weak border control and inter-agency cooperation, enabling illicit arms and terrorism financing. On external sovereignty threats, the U.S. political pressure is there.

“President Trump’s military threat against Nigeria over Christian killing. Number two, analysts view this as political theatre with low operational feasibility. It creates diplomatic and reputational risk.

“Nigeria must assert sovereignty while demonstrating domestic commitment to justice. We will respect our allies, but we will maintain the dignity of our sovereignty. That is the position of the parliament.

Despite strong anti-kidnapping laws like life imprisonment, the death penalty for kidnapping, the practice continues because it is alleged that government entities negotiate with bandits and pay ransom.

“That is one of the things that the House must investigate. Security analysts confirm that amnesty deals and peace negotiations delegitimise violence. They embolden armed groups and undermine the rule of law.

“Documented pattern across Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto shows ceremonies where captives are released and rusty weapons surrendered, followed by rapid resolution or resumption of violence. What then is the legislative solution to that?

“The legislative solution required is to ban unstructured amnesty negotiation and ransom payment by any government entity. Mandate criminal justice enforcement over expediency.

“Another issue is the police funding crisis. The Nigerian police force suffers from low budgetary allocation with incomplete and late disbursement, unaccounted state government and private donations creating corruption channels and a lack of a transparent auditing mechanism.”

Kalu said the impact of this is that operational paralysis is observed, leading to an Inability to plan effectively and perpetuation of inefficiency, adding that the legislative solution is to mandate sustained and predictable funding. Require rigorous record keeping and audit all Nigerian police force funds, including donations.

Kalu said the centralised policing model can no longer meet the diverse localised security needs of 36 states and 774 local governments, hence the need for a policing system that will meet the needs of all.

He said, “Let’s tell ourselves the truth. Whether we call it state police, whether we call it community police, or whether we call it local government police, the need to decentralise has become very necessary. Some argued for the amendment of section 214 of the Constitution and the Second Schedule. Some say leave it as it is.

“Whatever it is, it is important that we consider that. The next is critical sequencing. State police reform must allow Nigerian police force accountability reform to avoid replicating a dysfunctional structure at the state level.”

He advocated moving policing to the concurrent list, enabling state and local governments to have a say, adding that, “we should provide safeguards to be able to guide that. Mr. Speaker, I say so because a police force that cannot plan beyond the next pay cheque cannot protect this nation.

“This new plan guarantees our police the predictable, transparent funding that they need. They need wildlife to ensure every Naira is accounted for. State police are not a silver bullet.

“It is a necessary evolution of our federal system, and we should be looking at that decentralisation. These are the core messages of my suggestion, Mr. Speaker, the core message pillars. Number one is legislative leadership, not reactive politics.

“For too long, the National Assembly has been viewed as reactive on security matters. Today, we assert our constitutional role as the primary law-making body of this nation. These measures represent proactive, structured reform, not political theatre.

“Sovereignty with accountability. Nigeria will never cede sovereignty to external actors, but sovereignty also demands responsibility. We will protect our citizens, prosecute perpetrators, and demonstrate to the world that Nigeria solves Nigerian problems.

“From militarised response to institutional reform, drones and jets have their place. But no amount of military hardware can substitute for accountable policing, for transparent funding, and for a criminal justice system that actually delivers justice. The legislative agenda addresses root causes, not just symptoms.”

Kalu, Abaribe, legal icons unite as UOALC celebrates 5th anniversary

It was an evening filled with elegance and recognition as Uche Ojembe & Associates Legal Consult (UOALC), a prominent Abuja-based legal firm, marked its 5th anniversary with a grand celebration at the Exclusive Serene Hotel.

Held under the theme “Celebrating Five Years of Legal Excellence: A Future of Impact,” the event drew a distinguished crowd of legal experts, political leaders, clients, and supporters who gathered to honour the firm’s remarkable progress and achievements over the past five years.

Among the high-profile guests were notable politicians and public figures, including Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, Emeka Wogu (Chairman of the South East Development Commission and former Minister of Labour), Magistrate Hon. Farila Ibrahim, Chief Azubogu, and Barr. Awa Kalu SAN (former Attorney-General of Abia State). Their presence brought prestige and honour to the occasion.

Kalu commended the firm for its resolute dedication to justice and high standards in legal practice. “I commend the firm for its unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law and encourage young legal practitioners to remain steadfast in integrity, service, and professionalism. Congratulations once again on this milestone of excellence,” he said.

Attendees enjoyed a thoughtfully planned evening featuring highlights of UOALC’s journey, an awards segment, and a vibrant banquet that fostered a spirit of celebration and professional networking.

Delivering a keynote address, Barrister Uchenna Ojembe, founder and Lead Counsel of UOALC, shared reflections on the firm’s evolution from modest beginnings to a nationally respected legal institution.

“What began as a modest legal outfit has grown into a reputable firm anchored on integrity, professionalism and results,” he said.

“As we celebrate five years of excellence, innovation and impact, we reflect not only on the milestones achieved, but on the challenges that shaped us, the relationships that strengthened us and the values that continue to define our practice.”

He went on to express sincere gratitude to the firm’s loyal clients — many of whom have been with UOALC since its inception — as well as to his colleagues, partners, and both past and current team members. “Your trust in our counsel and your confidence in our representation have been the driving force behind our growth,” he added, also acknowledging the support of his family and mentors.
