YouTube actors, producers won’t last in Nigeria, says Kanayo Kanayo

Veteran Kanayo O Kanayo has raised concerns over the influx of actors on YouTube in Nigeria.

He said the prevalent practice of intense one-day shoots among emerging actors on YouTube was detrimental to.professiomalism and sustainability.

In a video shared on Instagram, Kanayo berated the trend of charging exorbitant fees for single-day shoots where actors are required to complete numerous scenes within a short timeframe.

He expressed apprehension that such demanding working conditions are negatively impacting the health of actors.

Kanayo highlighted the lack of foresight and professionalism among Nigerian actors prioritising short-term gains over sustainable practices.

He stressed the unsustainable nature of one-day shoots, often involving unrealistic expectations and overburdening actors with excessive scenes.

Kanayo lamented that this approach not only compromises the quality of content but also jeopardises the well-being of actors.

The veteran actor cited the unfortunate decline in the health of a respected colleague who pioneered the one-day shoot trend, attributing it to the strain imposed by such intensive filming schedules.

He urged actors to prioritise their health and cautioned against sacrificing professionalism for immediate financial gains.

Kanayo concluded stating that YouTube will soon be gone in Nigeria due to the manner it’s being used by people.

According to him: ‘’We built Nollywood, brick by brick, block by block but the guys who have besieged YouTube, the actors not the producers, do not have any sense of purpose or process to create a procedure for a lasting videography or creating content.

“Take, for instance, the whole irony of a one-day shoot. It is not sustainable. Some of them now make it so difficult for producers. They tell you a day shoot is N1 million or N1.5 million. It isn’t sustainable.

“Unfortunately, my very high-standing colleague who started this one-day shoot is unfortunately not in good health. Why? I know for everyone who gives you a job, wants it done. They pack you with enough to finish in one day. Thirty scenes, thirty-five scenes.

“Most of you think you are enjoying ‘I am fully booked for the next six months’ but your health…I hope you enjoy good health like those of us who started 38 years ago because what you are doing is not sustainable.

“I bear you no malice. Earn all your money but the disservice you are doing to professionalism is not going to last long and the way I see it. YouTube is not going to last long in Nigeria as a platform.”

Kanayo O Kanayo claims seniority over Pete Edochie in Nollywood

Actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo has claimed seniority to his older colleague, Pete Edochie in Nollywood industry.

Nnanyi sacrifice, as he’s often called owing to the ‘ritualist’ role he plays in the movies, indicated that he would blatantly contest any narrative that stated otherwise.

He explained in a recently surfaced interview that he starred in the first professionally produced home video, titled: “Living in Bondage” in 1992.

According to him, though Pete Edochie was already into acting prior to that time, but wasn’t into home video but cinema.

KOK added that the 76-year-old thespian, made his debut into Nollywood four years after he did.

He expressed concern over sentimentalism in history, hoping when Nollywood is being chronicled; he won’t be excluded.

He said: “I hope I won’t be written out of the history when it’s told or the story when it’s told of Nollwood.

“You can’t take it away that Kenneth Nnebue made the first professionally produced home video. You can’t take it away, 1992. You can’t take it away from those who took part in that “Living in Bondage.

“Just like you can’t take it away from the fact that “Things Fall Apart” Pete Edochie took part in was not home video. It was cinema.

“So if you write a story now and say Pete Edochie is older than me in Nollywood, I’ll contest it because he came four years after. It isn’t a matter of biological age.

“So, in Nollywood, I’m his senior. But if, you recall, cinema; of course. Then you start going to Baba Hubert Ogunde in 1940s or 1950s. This is history. History has no romanticism.”
