Amid legal emirate tussle in Kano state, Governor Abba Yusuf on Wednesday appointed the dethroned emir of the abolished Gaya emirate, Alhaji Aliyu Abdulkadir, as second class emir of the newly created Gaya emirate.

Aliyu Abdulkadir, including Aminu Bayero and three others were among the five first class emirs sacked by Governor Yusuf on May 23, after signing the amended (Repealed) Kano State Emirates Council Law 2024 (1441 A.H) which was passed by the House of Assembly.

The dethronement of the five emirs was followed by the reinstatement of former CBN governor, Lamido Sanusi, also known as Muhammadu Sanusi II, as the 16th emir of one (united) Kano emirate, a situation that has thrown the state into legal tussle.

Gaya emirate, which is to be superintended by Abdulkadir now as a second emir, comprises three local government areas: Gaya, Albasu and Ajingi.

The governor also appointed Alhaji Muhammad Mahraz as emir of Karaye. Until his appointment, Mahraz was the district head of Rogo.

Karaye emirate covers Karaye and Rogo local government areas.

Alhaji Muhammad Umar, a former district head of Bankure, is now the emir of Rano.

The Rano emirate is made up of Rano, Bunkure and Kibiya local government areas.

All the three second-class emirs of the new emirates will be answerable to the emir of Kano, whose status is first class.

The appointments were made after Governor Yusuf gave assent to the Kano State Emirates Council Law 2024, which approves the establishment of three second-class emirates (Rano, Gaya and Karaye) in the state.
