Kano Governor clears N5.6 billion councillors’ dues

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has disbursed N5,604,205,998 to 1,198 former councillors, fulfilling outstanding entitlements and prompting the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Jibrin Falgore, to endorse him for a second term.

The APC councillors were denied their between 2018 to 2023 by the Abdullahi Ganduje administration, Yusuf said.

Five years after a prolonged delay, Governor Yusuf has settled over N5.6 billion severance and furniture allowances owed to councillors.

The Governor had earlier paid N1.8 billion in May 2025 to 903 former councillors who served between 2014 and 2017 as the first tranche. The second tranche of N5.6 billion is now being disbursed to 1,198 former councillors.

Speaking during the payment of the second tranche, an excited Falgore said, “The only way we can repay him is to reelect him in 2027.”

Governor Yusuf confirmed that bankers had been directed to begin crediting the councillors’ accounts immediately.

Governor Yusuf said he inherited the liability of N15.6 billion from the previous APC-led administration, which failed to pay its councillors that served between 2014 and 2020 across the 44 local government areas.

He described the payment as a defining moment for Kano State, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to restoring dignity, fairness, and justice to those who served at the grassroots level.

“These are moments when we rise above the ordinary to restore dignity, fairness, and justice to those who have served with loyalty and dedication. Today, by the grace of Allah, is one of the defining moments in the history of Kano State.

“It is my belief that many of you have already started receiving your alerts, as I instructed the bankers to begin crediting your accounts even before I finished my speech,” Yusuf added.

He further assured that preparations were underway for the third and final tranche amounting to N8.2 billion which will cover 1,371 former councillors. He said the final payment is expected to be disbursed by the second week of November.

Yusuf stressed that the initiative was not just a financial obligation but a means to strengthen trust between the government and its people.

The governor added that government is not only about building roads, schools, or hospitals. It is also about building trust and honoring those who have served.

Kano governor to build 300 labs, employ 10,000 teachers

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano state has declared state of emergency on education in the state with a promise to build 300 laboratories and employ additional 10,000 teachers.

The declaration took place at Open Arena, Kano government House, Kano on Saturday.

The governor said the Kano educational landscape, once a beacon of hope and opportunity for the youth and an example for other states to copy, now stands shrouded in the shadows of unacceptable neglect and decay.

He said his administration met about 4.7 million pupils sitting on bare floors in primary schools across the state upon assumption of office last year.

“The problems are multi-faceted: we face a severe shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate teacher training programmes and lack of basic amenities such as clean water and sanitation in many of our schools.

“These issues, coupled with the socio- economic challenges that many of our students face, create an environment where education is not just difficult, but nearly impossible,” he regretted.

The provision of these facilities, he said, will provide the students with hands-on experience in scientific inquiry, fostering a culture of experimentation and discovery that is essential for their future

    success.

In order to create a more conducive atmosphere for learning, he announced the construction of 1000 classrooms across the State within the next academic session.

“This measure will, no doubt, mitigate classroom congestion that has become a common feature of most of our schools. We have also directed that all contractors handling inherited abandoned projects in our tertiary institutions should go back to site immediately,” he said.

As part of the emergency action, the governor approved the hiring of additional 10,000 teachers, adding that teachers will enjoy periodic training and retraining so as to achieve the vision of making “every teacher, a caring educator”.

“At least 1,000 Academic and non-academic staff will be employed into tertiary institutions,” he said.

  • BREAKING: Appeal Court sacks Kano Gov Abba Yusuf

BREAKING: Appeal Court sacks Kano Gov Abba Yusuf

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State.

The panel upheld the verdict of the tribunal led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay which sacked Yusuf on September 20, 2023.

Recall the lower tribunal had declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir Gawuna, as the lawfully elected candidate in the 18 March election.

The three-member panel of judges in the tribunal led by Oluyemi Asadebay, had ruled in favour of the APC candidate.

The Nation reports after the 18 March election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared that the NNPP polled 1,019,602 votes against the APC’s 890,705 to emerge victorious.

But the tribunal invalidated over 165,663 ballots thumb printed in favour of NNPP. The court ruled that the votes were deducted because the ballot papers with which they were cast were not stamped or signed. This rendered the votes invalid, according to the tribunal.

The tribunal said the petitioner was able to prove the allegation of the invalidity of some of the votes on the grounds that the election was not in compliance with the provision of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Therefore, the tribunal ordered that the invalid votes be expunged from Yusuf’s scores.

Displeased with the tribunal’s judgement, Yusuf in a notice of appeal dated 2 October 2023, argued that the tribunal erred when it relied on sections 71 and 63 of the Electoral Act, 2022 to invalidate the 165,616 ballot papers returned in his favour.

The governor also said the respondent, (the APC) “did not plead with the polling units where the alleged invalid papers ballot papers were used and the tribunal was therefore wrong to accede to cancel the lawful votes”.

There was no witness presented by the first respondent to testify as to the use of any of the ballot papers in any polling unit. NNPP argued that the tribunal did not demonstrate in its judgement how it arrived at its decision on 165,616 invalid votes against the appellant.

The governor also argued in ground 20, that the tribunal misdirected itself when it went out of the judicial duties by constituting itself into witnesses, investigators and sat as judges.

The ruling is not the last of judicial pronouncement on the election, as the losing party after the Appeal Court ruling is constitutionally allowed to appeal to the Supreme Court, the country’s highest court with the final say on the electoral dispute.
