    Kwara plans to topple Pillars

Chairman of Kano Pillars, Abba Yola, has said he does not believe there is a conspiracy to stop his club retaining their championship.

Yola, whose team lost three points and three goals to Enyimba on Thursday after a hearing by the organising and disciplinary committee, maintained: “I don’t see any hand of conspiracy against Pillars.

“No amount of conspiracy can stop us if God has destined that we will win the league title.

“What we see rather are half measures before the rules and this is not good for the league.”

Kano Pillars are expected to officially table their appeal before the NFF on Monday after they kicked against a decision to award their abandoned match with Enyimba to the Aba club.

The defending champions are now fourth on the league table with 54 points from 34 matches and four rounds of matches to the end of the season.

They stand the risk of not featuring in international football should they fail to finish within the top three in the league.

    • Club disappointed over verdict

The management of Kano Pillars says the club will appeal the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)’s Disciplinary Committee decision to award 3 points and 3 goals to Enyimba over the abandoned Matchday 31 game.

The Disciplinary Committee after its meeting in Abuja on Thursday found Pillars guilty of encroachment and disruption of the said game.

Pillars were told to replace the damaged Enyimba camera and play the rest of their home games at Lokoja.

The club’s media officer, Idris Malikawa told SportingLife that the club received Disciplinary Committee decision by 4:30 pm on Friday.

He added that the decision is too harsh to the club.

“We have received the verdict of d NFF’s Disciplinary Committee decision on their match against Enyimba which the committee awarded 3 point 3 goals to Enyimba and banish pillars to Lokoja for its home matches. We received the verdict on Friday by 4pm. It is obvious we are going to appeal because the decision is too hash to us and we believed the appeal committee will do justice to us,” Malikawa told SportingLife.

The club’s image-maker also informed SportingLife that the news of the verdict did not go down with the supporters. He said the club are using the local media to appeal to the fans for calm.

“This is not good. I don’t want to believe some people are looking for the downfall of the club. How can you explain this kind decision? In a game we’ve scored and with three minutes to end the game. And a committee goes ahead to awarded 3 points and 3 goals to other club. We’ve appealed to our fans for calm because the new was a shock to everybody. We are using radio to douse the tension.”

As a result of this ruling, Enyimba move three points clear at the top of the league with 58 points from 34 games and a goal difference of +17.

    • Rabiu Ali too hot for Akwa United

Second placed Kano Pillars Wednesday pushed off Bayelsa United from the top of the league table after beating hard fighting Akwa United to earn three vital points.

Pillars prior to the tie had 48 points in the kitty in 28 matches, but the three points earned against Akwa United in the re-scheduled match took the 2012 league champions to 51 points in 29 matches. It was Pillars’ clinical finisher Rabiu Ali that grabbed the all-important goal that separated both sides.

The feat took a ripple effect as Bayelsa now occupy 2nd position with 48 points, El -Kanemi 3rd on 47 and Enyimba on the 4th position with 46 points.

Pillars leadership may however be temporary as matches have been lined up after the crucial World Cup qualifying match in Calabar between Super Eagles and Flames of Malawi with possibilities of changes at the top once more

Wednesday’s victory marks back-to-back victory for the Kano based side, coming just few days after they beat Rangers 2-1.

  • Kano Pillars salute Governor for car gift

Kano Pillars salute Governor for car gift

Kano Pillars have hailed Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso after they were rewarded with cash and cars for winning the Nigeria league last season.

Governor Kwankwaso doled out N500,000 to each player, while each official got N750,000.

In addition to the cash, the champions also got a Kia Picanto car each as a fulfillment of the Governor’s promise after the team won their second league championship.

Eagles midfielder Rabiu Ali told MTNFootball.com that the entire team are grateful to the Governor.

“I feel so happy to be part of this, it was a great moment for me. I thank the Governor for rewarding us. This will go a long way to motivate us to do more as we fight to retain our title,” Ali told MTNFootball.com.

Former players of the team, who contributed to this success last season, also praised Governor Kwakwanso.

Plateau United left back John Boyi Yampee told MTNFootball.com he was happy with the reward.

“I am happy to be counted among those who were rewarded by Governor Kwakwanso. He did well to have put us in this, he could have said we won’t be given since we are no more with the team but he didn’t. We appreciate this,” Boyi told MTNFootball.com.

Ex-Pillars players who were part of the largesse were: John Boyi(Plateau United), Abubakar Baleri (Wikki), Siman Yusuf (Kaduna Utd), Victor Namo (Nasarawa Utd), Musa Musa(Wikki), Papa Idris and Reuben Gabriel(Kilmarnock, Scotland).

  • Kano Pillars flex muscles again

Just like the regular season Kano Pillars overcame all opposition to take the crown of the best team in the Savannah conference and maintaining their record as the only unbeaten side in the Dstv Premier Basketball League.

A run of 31 games without losing. 28 regular season games and three in the post season, a feat even the NBA Champions Miami Heat could not attain during their historic second NBA championship run with 27 consecutive wins. Kano Pillars have shown Nigeria and Africa at large that they are the team to beat this season.

League newcomers Mark Mentors have showed they can compete with the big boys by finishing second on the log behind Kano Pillars in the regular season with 22-6 win-loss record and two wins and a solitary loss in the playoffs which is no mean feat. A fantastic result for the big spending league debutant.

Although they lost five of their seven matches to Kano Pillars and fighting without the services of key players Stanley Gumut, Abdul Yahaya and Mike Ohiero during the course of the season due to national team duties, Mark Mentors have being able to give a good account of themselves.

The battle is now left for the Finals in Lagos as the National Champions title is at stake, not forgetting that the ouster of the Royal Hoopers means there will be a new champion in the league for the first time in two years.

  • Can Kano Pillars keep the run going?

Can Kano Pillars keep the run going?

It is exactly a decade since Nigerian champions, Kano Pillars, last lost a home game in the Professional Football League. Julius Berger FC (Bridge Boys FC) were the last club to inflict defeat on Kano Pillars on their home ground on June 21, 2003. Pillars lost that game 1-2.

Kano Pillars head coach, Mohammed Baba Ganaru is happy to be the man in the saddle when this milestone is achieved.

“We’ve always wanted to achieve this as a team when we knew that we are close to achieving such a record. It’s always a proud moment when your name is called alongside a team or club that has achieved an enviable record such as this,” said Ganaru.

    Close shaves

But this record did not come without being threatened at some point in recent seasons in the NPFL. On January 15, 2011, Kano Pillars were just seconds away from losing to Sharks after Victor Ezeji opened scoring on 12 minutes inside the Sani Abacha Stadium.

However, Victor Namo’s goal in added time saved Pillars the blushes in a season they finished fourth in the final standings behind Dolphins, Sunshine Stars and Warri Wolves.

“On that day, we did everything right but Sharks scored first and they defended so well but I got the lucky break and scored very, very late in the game. For us, it was like a win because we couldn’t imagine disappointing our fans,” said Namo, who now plays for NPFL rivals, Nasarawa United.

In the same season of 2010/11, another Port Harcourt club, Dolphins, provided Pillars another scare. Though the Kano club won 3-2 but left it late again.

Former Dolphins player, Ahmed Abdulrahman, now the club secretary, describes that game officiated by referee Kola Akinwale as “interesting.”

But the near hit on Pillars’ home invincibility continued last season with Heartland also coming close to ending the streak in March 2012. Obinna Orji scored for Heartland in the 30th minute but after toiling for 43 minutes, Gambo Mohammed put the game level.

However, this term two teams have stretched Kano Pillars the most at home. They are Kaduna United and Lobi Stars though the former were bitter with the officiating.

On May 22, Kaduna United stood man for man with Pillars in Kano but it was Rabiu Ali’s late goal from the spot that gave the Nigerian champions a nervy 3-2 win. Nine days ago, Lobi Stars put up a real battle and scored first through Onche Ogidison before Ikechukwu Gabriel put Pillars back in the tie that ended 1-1.

“It was a difficult game as we fell behind. But I was confident that we were not going to lose with the record in sight and thank God we didn’t,” said Ganaru.

But in the run-in to achieving their one decade streak, Kano Pillars just strolled past north-eastern rivals, El-Kanemi Warriors 2-0 last week with two first half goals from Kabiru Umar and Mustapha Musa.

    Driving force behind streak

There have been different school of thoughts on what makes Kano Pillars tough at home. Captain of the club, Theophilus Afelokhai, believes the presence of fans at their home ground on matchdays is a big factor.

“You can’t have such a full house during matches and not give your best. The presence of fans at our stadium is usually encouraging and we do our best not to lose at home,” said the goalkeeper to supersport.com.

Afelokhai’s view is also shared by two former Kano Pillars players, Namo and Imama Amapakabo as well as Ezeji, Abdulrahman and Dolphins’ spokesman, China Acheru, who has watched several league matches at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Ezeji said: “I’ve played there on several occasions and I’ve never won a game there. The stadium is always filled to capacity, packed with fans and by far the best atmosphere. I’ve never had cause to complain about any underhand dealings or poor officiating there because they’ve got the best turnout of supporters. Imagine a greenhorn playing at that stadium, the jitters will always set in with such intimidating fanbase.”

“You will agree with me the support they get from their fans plays a vital role in making this a reality especially in the face of a defeat,” Abdulrahman said.

Acheru also said: “Kano is a very difficult place to play in and get a result. If there are 40,000 fans in the stadium, 39,900 are Pillars fans who urge them on all 90 minutes. When you have the fans behind you in such a way it is easy to win than lose. That’s the secret to the Pillars success story.”

Amapakabo, who kept goal for Kano Pillars in the 1990s, gave an insider’s view on the run. “The fanbase is a big, big factor among other factors I wouldn’t want to mention. During my time at Pillars, the gate-takings conveniently paid for our match bonuses, so that tells you why the players give their all in home games just to make the fans enjoy their money’s worth. In Kano, every game is a sell-out to the crowd irrespective of the opposition.

“Pillars’ invincibility is also helped by the mentality of players, especially of the opposing teams, believing that it is impossible to win in Kano,” said Amapakabo, who is now coach at Enyimba.

In spite of this milestone, Ganaru does not want to heap the pressure on his team by talking up on extending the run. Instead he is focused on the title race.

“It will be unnecessary pressure,” said Ganaru. “Our focus is on our remaining matches this season. It’s still a long road to end the season but our form at home has been impressive in the past 10 years. Now we will need to do well in our away games as well. But until then the title is not yet won.”

Ezeji, who is the League Bloggers Awards (LBA) ambassador, summed it up saying it is going to be difficult to end Kano Pillars’ run at home but will not rule it happening in future.

“It’s always going to be tough winning in such an intimidating ground because their players are always fired up. But records do end and some day it will though the team that will do such will have to be exception and on top of their game,” said Ezeji.

Kano Pillars ended the first round of this season as leaders of the log with 36 points and will start their second round campaign at El-Kanemi Warriors on July 3.

But the champions will aim to keep their home prestige running four days later when they play hosts to Wikki Tourists.
