  • Kano Police chief apologises to NBA over unlawful arrest

    Kano state Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Wakili has apologised to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) over molestation and unlawful arrest of its members by policemen.

    The apology came barely 24 hours to expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum by the Kano NBA to Wakili.

    The Nation reports the NBA in a statement on Wednesday said armed policemen had molested and arrested its members working at an election petition secretariat.

    The association also accused Wakili of being partisan in the discharge of his duty.

    However, on receiving the information about the ultimatum, the commissioner appeared at the NBA secretariat on Thursday to tender an unreserved apology.

    Speaking to newsmen after the visit, Wakili said he decided to come by himself to say sorry after he investigated the incident that led to the arrest and detention of two lawyers.

    “After receiving the complaint and even heard it through the media, I launched an investigation and found that they were unlawfully arrested.

    “Therefore, I deemed it fit to go there myself and tender my apology. I am a Police man who discharges his duty within the concept of law,” he said.

    The CP also urged the association and other people to challenge him whenever he goes contrary to law.

    The state secretary of the association, Mujtaba Adamu-Ameen, commended the CP for the gesture, describing him as a professional and ethical cop.

    “As you can see, the CP abided by our ultimatum. He came here and apologised. This show that he is a professional and disciplined Corp,” he said.

    Kano Police Command records 334 rape cases in 2017

    The Kano State Police Command on Friday said it had recorded 334 cases of rape and other sexual offences in the state from January to date.

    The command Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Magaji Majiya disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the command’s year review in Kano.

    ”Five Hundred and Forty Seven cases of rape and other sexual offences were reported in 2016 while 334 cases were received in 2017, indicating a major reduction in committing crimes in the state,” he said.

    According to him, the command had recorded 601 major crimes, recovered 35 stolen vehicles and recovered N744.6 million property in the period under review.

    Majiya noted that the rate of crime had drastically gone down in the year under review considering the adequate security arrangements strategically deployed in the State and the number of criminals arrested with the synergy of the public and stakeholders involved.

    He said 52 kidnapped victims were rescued and reunited with their respective families, 73 different types of local arms and 273 live ammunitions were recovered from suspects.

    “In the year 2016 the command witnessed 72 cases of armed robbery with 117 suspects arrested, while for the current year (2017), only 35 cases of robbery were reported and 76 suspects arrested.

    According to him, the command had successfully arrested 497 members of different gangs of Yandaba (miscreants) in collaboration with traditional rulers and other security agencies.

    “Eighty nine of the group had surrendered and renounced the perpetration of the heinous crime
    in addition to counseling and monitoring their conduct, for them to become responsible members of the society,” Majiya said.

    He disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police war against corruption gaining ground within the rank and file of the Nigeria Police Force, had appeared to be a spectacular success in the Kano pcontinue olice command.

    Majiya called on the general public and other stakeholders to support the command in its determined efforts to flush the remaining criminals out of the state in 2018.

  • Police shot dead suspected robber in Kano

    The police anti-robbery operatives in Kano have shot dead a suspected armed robber and arrested one after a gun duel with the robbers.

    The spokesman of Kano State Police Command, Magaji Majiya, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday.

    Majiya said the incident happened on Sunday at Yandutse village in Bichi local government area of the state.

    “On January 29, at about 0430hrs, one Ibrahim Mohammed of Rimin Kebe quarters criminally conspired with three others while armed with locally made pistols and other dangerous weapons,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the police spokesman as saying in the statement.

    “The suspects stormed a residence at Yandutse Village, Bichi LGA in Kano, attacked a family and robbed them of N750,000 cash and other valuables.”

    Majiya said a good Samaritan alerted policemen who responded promptly, blocked all exits from the village and intercepted the robbers.

     

  • Cattle Rustling: Kano Police recover 224 cows, 45 sheep, one body

    The Kano State Police Command yesterday recorded another feat in the fight against cattle rustlers, recovering 224 cows, 45 sheep and two dogs inside Gomo forest in Sunmaila Local Government Area of Kano.

    The State Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Musa Katsina who led the latest operation in the company of journalists to the forest warned cattle rustlers to flee the state or be ready to face tough opposition.

    The latest operation came barely after a week when CP Katsina paraded over 74 cattle rustlers and recovered 818 cattle, 87 sheep, hard drugs and assorted arms and ammunition, while three of the rustlers were killed during a gun duel in the notorious Falgore Game Reserve in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of the state.

    According to CP Katsina, Gomo Forest, about 185 kilomertres outside Kano, links to Yankari Forest in Bauchi, Falgore Forest in Kano and Sambisa Forest in Borno and the Republic of Cameroon.

    Speaking to newsmen inside the Gomo Forest, CP Katsina said after the command received information from Good Samaritan that the cattle rustlers were in possession of stolen cows, the security operatives were drafted to the forest and the cows were recovered while the rustlers fled the area.

    However, in a gun duel with the police that lasted for a few hours, the police recovered 224 cows, 24 sheep, goat and two dogs, adding that one of the dead body of the rustlers was later found beside river.

    The police boss further stated that adequate security had been put in place around the forest, noting that his officers and men are battle ready to deal ruthlessly with criminals and bandits in the forest and any part of the state.

    The commissioner later handed over the recovered 224 cows, 45 sheep and one dog recovered from rustlers to Hon. Zubairu Hamza, a member of Kano state House of Assembly representing Sumaila Local Government Area.

    Katsina however called on the teeming masses of the state to always furnish the police with useful information that would lead to the arrest of the castle rustlers.

    Police defuse bomb in Kano

    Barely 24 hours after two female bombers hit the famous textile market, the Police in Kano this afternoon, uncovered and defused a high caliber Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Dawanau, a famous food market in the ancient city of Kano.

    Eye witness in the market told the Nation that the bombs were neatly concealed in a sack that was hidden in the ever busy market.

    Kano Police Commissioner, Mr. Aderenle Shinaba confirmed the incident saying; “My men have successfully detonated the bomb and have since restored normalcy to the market.”
