    Kano, Dangote, Rhino Group sign $150m solar power project

    Kano State Government, Dangote Group of Companies and Black Rhino Group, Thursday in Kano, signed a $150 million Solar Power project Memorandum of Understanding MoU.

    On completion, within 24 months of the target period, the Independent power project is expected to generate 100 Mega Watts of clean electricity, not only to industries but to the people of the State.

    The MoU, was signed by Secretary to the Kano State Government (SSG), Alhaji Usman Alhaji on behalf of the State Government, while the Executive Director, Dangote Group, Alhaji Manusr Ahmed, signed on behalf of the Dangote Group.

    In his address at the signing ceremony, the SSG, said the Solar power project is what is in vogue for now all over the world, stressing that we need energy for the progress and growth of the economy of the state.

    ”we need energy to make any progress and development anywhere in the World, so we believe this is a right step in the right direction and I wish to also reiterate that the

    Kano State Government is very keen on this project and we are doing everything possible, under the leadership of the Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to improve the life and living conditions of the people of Kano State.”

    In his remarks, the Group Executive Director of Dangote Group, Alhaji Manusr Ahmed, said the purpose of the Solar power project is meant to improve the economy of Kano, as a great Interpol and centre of Commerce in the sub-Saharan region.

    The project, which would be jointly financed by the Dangote Industries Limited, including the Black Rhino Group will provide a state of the art renewable energy plant that will convert the abundant energy of the sun into high quality clean electricity.

    Also, he said it was an open secret that the gross inadequacy of the supply of reliable and affordable electricity, as one of the critical challenges confronting the State’s economy and indeed the entire national economy.

    He said, the granting of a sizeable land on which the project would be sited will no doubt accelerate the delivery of the estimated $150 million power project.

    One of the vital aspect of the project, he said is that the plant would source its basic raw material from the environment, stressing that they are committed to commence the project as soon as possible.

    To this end, he urged the community to ensure a harmonious, sustainable and mutual relationship for the success of the project.

    Govt. to partner private investors to boost tomato production

    The Kano State Government says it is ready to partner with private investors to boost tomato production in the state.

    The state Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Nasiru Gawuna, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Friday.

    Gawuna said the state government was ready to allocate farms to private investors to produce the commodity in large commercial quantity for sale to the Dangote Tomato Processing Company and individuals.

    He said under the plan, the state government would allocate the farms to interested private investors who would produce the commodity and sell it to people for local consumption.

    According to him, the initiative would go along way in boosting production of the commodity in addition to providing Tomato Processing Companies with adequate raw materials for their operation.

    “This is what the government did at Kadawa where it set aside many farms for tomato production as a trial,” Gawuna said.

    The Commissioner, who, attributed the decline in tomato production in the state in recent times to pest infection, said the state government had concluded arrangements to support farmers to boost the production of the commodity.

    He said the government had set up a committee called “Innovative Platform on Tomato” to ensure effective implementation of the government’s plans.

    He also disclosed that the state government had concluded arrangements to construct boreholes at all irrigation sites across the 44 local government areas of the state to enhance irrigation activities.

    Gawuna said the measure became necessary in order to ensure massive production of some selected commodities especially groundnut, maize and wheat, among others.

    “The initiative will not only provide job opportunities to the teeming number of unemployed persons but will also check rural-urban drift especially among youths,”he added.

    NAN reports that due to the decline in the production of the commodity in Kano and other neighbouring states, the Dangote Tomato Processing Company had yet to resume production since the outbreak of the tomato disease known as “Tuta Absoluta”, about two years ago.

  •  Kano to enroll 100 children orphaned by insurgency from Borno

    The Kano State Government has requested 100 children orphaned by the Boko Haram insurgency from Borno State Government for enrollment into the special boarding primary school established for them in the state.

    Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje disclosed this when he received the Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Kano on Monday.
    NAN reports that the special boarding primary school was established by the immediate past governor of the state , Mr Rabi’u Kwankwaso, to cater for the children orphaned by insurgency, especially, from the North-Eastern part of the country.
    NAN also reports that most of the children currently in the school are from Borno.
    Ganduje said the state government had requested Borno State Government to bring another set of 100 children who would be enrolled in the school this academic session.
    According to him, the state government will take care of the children up to the university level.
    “The school is a full-fledged boarding primary school established by the state government for children orphaned by the insurgency, “he said.
    He said the school, which is fully equipped, would continue to provide quality education to the affected children as most of them had lost their parents and relations and had nowhere to go to as their home.
    He said the state government had received no less than 1, 000 refugees from the Central African Republic (CAR) at the initial stage of the crisis in the country.
    He said the state government had to set up a team that screened them and later returned them to their respective areas.
    He commended the commission for the bold steps it had taken to alleviate the hardships of the IDPs by providing them with some relief materials.
    In her remarks, the NCFRMI Federal Commissioner, Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq, said the commission would partner the state government to rehabilitate and integrate the returnees and IDPs.
    “We want to strengthen our relationship with the Kano State Government through partnership to enable us achieve our mandate.”
    She called on the state government to assist the returnees and IDPs by providing them with farmlands to enable them engage in farming activities for self-sustenance

    Kano State Govt. donates 28 Toyota Hilux vehicles to Nigerian Army‎

    The Kano State Government on Monday donated 16 Toyota Hilux vehicles “and 12 refurbished ones” to the Nigerian Army as part of efforts to combat crime in the state.‎

    Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje presented the vehicles to the Brigade Commander of 3rd Brigade,Nigerian Army, Kano, Brig.-Gen. Olufemi Akinjobi, at the Government House, Kano.

    ‎Ganduje said the gesture was in appreciation of the numerous sacrifice of the military toward restoring peace and stability in the state and the country.‎

    “I am here today to present 16 brand new Toyota Hilux vehicles and 12 refurbished ones to you to assist in cushioning the effect and challenges of transportation in the fight against crime in the state,”he said.

    ‎The governor congratulated the military on their successes in Falgore forest and other strongholds of cattle rustlers, kidnappers and other criminals.

    ‎He said the state government had spent over N300 million on the procurement and the refurbishing of the vehicles.

    ‎Brig.-Gen. Akinjobi thanked the state government for the donation and promised judicious use of the vehicles.

    “Any government that musters the courage to provide vehicles to  ‎security agencies, that government is serious in tackling security issues and we promise to make judicious use of these vehicles, “he said.

    Kano to purchase JAMB forms for 5,000 candidates

    The Kano state Government has approved more than N37 million for the purchase and distribution of JAMB forms to 5,000 prospective candidates in the State.‎

    The state Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the weekly state’s Executive Council Meeting in Kano on Tuesday.‎

    ‎He said the council had also approved more ‎than N30 million for the renovation of Dandalama ‎Secondary School at Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of the state.‎

    ‎Garba added that the council approved ‎more than N247 ‎million for the rehabilitation of Niger, Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo roads in Sabon Gari area of Fage Local Government area. ‎

    The commissioner also said more than N31 million was approved for the rehabilitation of Gwagwarwa Shariah court.‎

    ‎“The council also approved N80 million f‎or the purchase of first phase of equipment for the resuscitation of Triumph Newspapers and the constitution of 10-man Management Committee.

    “More than N 476 million was also approved for the rehabilitation of road networks within Janbulo quarters along Gwarzo Road,” he said.

    Garba said that the council also released‎ N145 million for the purchase of delivery Kits at Hospitals ‎across the state.

    He said that the council approved more than N64 million for the purchase of ‎Toyota Hilux for the operation of Hisba Board.‎

    The commissioner said that government was determination to develop infrastructure as part of its initiatives to improve the welfare of the people.

    Kano state approves N29m to train milkmaids

    Kano State Government ‎has approved more than N29 million for the training of Fulani milkmaids on modern milk processing.

    ‎The Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, made the disclosure when he briefed newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting in Kano on Thursday.

    He said that the exercise was aimed at training young Fulani milkmaids on modern milk processing and storage.

    ‎Garba said the council also approved N178 million for the payment of 2016/2017 academic session tuition fees for undergraduates of the state origin at Igbinideon University, Okada, in Edo.

    He said the council also approved N42 million for the construction of drainage in Darmanawa and Gandun Sarki in Tarauni local government areas.‎

    The commissioner said that the council approved one billion naira for the reconstruction of the 12.3km road from Tanye to Dubagau in Kabo Local Government Area.‎

    He added: “N781 million was awarded for the rehabilitation of Gidan Maza western bye-pass road in Kumbotso Local Government Area.‎

    “Also, N91.6 million has been awarded to provide Gandu and sharada street light.” ‎

    Garba said that the council also approved N25 million for the supply of 350 KVA generator and the repair of two faulty generators in Abubakar Rimi Television station.‎

    He also said that the meeting approved N12 million for the maintenance of a mast at the television station. ‎

    Irrigation: Kano to establish eight earth dams

    The Kano State Government on Tuesday said it would construct eight earth dams in order to boost irrigation activities across the 44 local government areas of the state.

    Alhaji Sulaiman Ririwai, Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development, made this known in Kano that the project had commenced in Doguwa Local Government Area.

    Ririwai said the state also planned to rehabilitate some dams to complement the existing 20 dams in enhancing irrigation and providing drinking water for animals in the rural areas.

    “Kano State as a whole has ground water problem and that is why the first governor of the state, Alhaji Audu Bako, constructed the 20 dams,’’ the commissioner said.

    He said the state government had started construction of 5, 000 hand pump and motorised boreholes across the 44 local governments to provide potable water for rural dwellers.

    “As I am talking to you now, over 1, 500 of such boreholes have been completed while about 2, 000 would be completed before the end of the year,’’ Ririwai.

    According to him, the state government will soon supply water to Rano from Tiga Dam in order to end the perennial water scarcity in the ancient town.

    “To address the Rano water problem, the government is planning to lay 42-kilometre pipe from Tiga Dam to the town.

    “By the time the project is completed, the problem of water in Rano will be history,” the commissioner said.

    On roads, Ririwai said the state government had started constructing 52 rural roads totalling 500 kilometres in each of the three senatorial districts under its rural access mobility programme.

     

  • 223 students share only one toilet in Kano – Deputy Governor

    The Kano State Government has expressed concern over poor state of infrastructural facilities in the state public schools, saying an estimated number of 223 students are sharing only one toilet in their respective schools across the state.

    The State Deputy Governor, Prof Hafiz Abubakar, who confirmed this yesterday, at a workshop organised by the Kano Sate ministry for local government and community development on girl child education, described as unacceptable the ratio of 223 students per one public school toilet in the state, adding that it poses alot of risks of infectious diseases.

    Prof Abubakar said the survey which gulped about N45m, also shows a huge disparity between male and female teachers of about 70 to 30 percent male and female and 95% of the female are teaching in urban areas while the remaining 5% teach in over 34 LGAs situated in rural areas.

    On this note, the Deputy Governor said only female teachers with NCE will be considered in the forthcoming recruitment exercise, therefore instructing the State Commissioner for Logal Government, Alh Murtala Sule Goro to focus his attention on those from the rural areas who will be willing to teach within their locality to address the challenges of girl child education in the state.

    Responding, the Commissioner for LG said 20 applicants will be considered for screening from each LGA with special interest in rural areas, adding that the periodic workshop, with 5,959 overall targeted participants was organised to improve the enrolment and retention of girl child education in the State.

    Kano procure N59m drugs to combat malaria

    Kano state Government has procured drugs and diagnostic equipment worth N59m to combat the current malaria disease ravaging the state

    Addressing the reporters in his office on Thursday in Kano, the state commissioner for health, Dr Kabiru lbrahim Getso, said due to the need to tackle the disease, drugs and diagnostic equipment have been distributed to the 38 hospitals in the state.

    According to him, the state government has also distributed over 6.5m treated mosquito nets as a rapid response to the people of the state.

    Getso further explained that some proactive measures adopted to address the malaria burden is also the procurement of 20 microscopes to diagnose the disease fast before medication.

    He however regretted that only 40 per cent of the people used the treated mosquito nets distributed free of charge, while 60 per cent abandoned it in their homes.

    Gesto also disclosed that 200 health workers have been employed to the various hospitals in the state.

  • Bye-election: Kano state govt warns trouble makers

    The Kano State Government says it is committed to ensuring free, fair and peaceful election during the forthcoming State House of Assembly bye-election in Minjibir.

    This is contained in a statement signed by the state Commissioner of Information, Youths and Sports, Malam Mohammed Garba, and made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Tuesday.

    According to Garba, the state government would collaborate with all security agencies in the state to ensure free, fair as well as peaceful elections in all the 158 polling units across the constituency.

    “This is in fulfillment of one of the cardinal objectives of any government of protecting lives and property of the citizenry,.

    “To ensure the exercise of their civic responsibility and fundamental right to freely choose their leaders as well as promote democratic principles in the state.

    The statement, therefore, urged the electorate in the constituency to turn out in large numbers to exercise their civic responsibility, be law-abiding and conduct themselves in an orderly and peaceful manner during the elections.

    “For the avoidance of doubt, government will not fold its arms to allow anybody or group of people to perpetrate violence and illegality at the expense of peace-loving and law-abiding citizens of the constituency and the state in general.

    “Government is not unaware of moves by some unpatriotic disgruntled elements to cause chaos during the elections for personal and selfish interests.

    “The prevailing peace in the state and sanctity of lives of the people at all times is non-negotiable and beyond the personal interest of anybody,” the statement added.
