    Hisbah arrests five over alleged illegal marriage in Kano

    Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested five youths for allegedly conducting an illegal marriage ceremony.

    The Islamic police accused the suspects of purportedly holding a marital ceremony without parents’ consent.

    Those arrested included the groom, bride, and three others who acted as representatives and witnesses.

    Deputy Commander General of the Board, Mujahideen Aminuddeen, while addressing newsmen in Kano on Monday, said the marriage was allegedly contracted with a dowry of ₦10,000, below the minimum threshold recognized in Islamic legal standards.

    Dr. Aminuddeen noted that the union violated Islamic and legal marital procedures, and the Hisbah Board has launched an investigation.

    He appealed to parents to monitor their children’s social engagements and guide them in marital affairs.

    No fewer than 10 suspected prostitutes were arrested operatives of the Kano State Hisbah Board, following raids conducted within the Kano metropolis.

    It was gathered that all the suspects apprehended by the state Sharia enforcer were young girls aged between 20 to 25.

    Spokesman of the board, Malam Umar Yakasai said the raids were carried out last week, adding that the suspected women of easy virtue were mostly not from Kano state.

    He explained that  some of the suburbs raided by Hisbah were Badawa, Na’ibawaand Race Course.

    He said most of the girls arrested were spotted loitering or waiting by the roadsides apparently soliciting for their prospective customers.

    “Our men saw the girls waiting by the roadsides searching for potential partners to pick them up in their vehicles around 10pm. We knew they were into immoral activities from the way they dressed,” he said.

    Yakasai added that the agency had already charged four of the suspects to court, while the others who he said were first timers, were handed over to their parents and relatives after being admonished.

    He, however,  called on parents and guardians to always monitor the movement and activities of their wards to prevent them from falling into immoral acts.

    Also,Yakasai disclosed that the board had confiscated two mini trucks filled with alcoholic beverages.

    He said the drivers of the vehicles and other suspects connected with the smuggling of the prohibited drinks to Kano have been taken to court.

    He added that the illegal drinks were being brought from Lagos, Enugu, and Oyo states.

    Kano Hisbah apprehends 48 beggars – Official

    Kano State Hisbah Board said it arrested no fewer than 48 beggars in Kano metropolis last month for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state.

    Malam Dahiru Nuhu , the officer in charge of Anti-Begging Unit of the Board, disclosed this while speaking with our reporter on Thursday in Kano.

    Nuhu said that the suspects -10 children and 38 adults – were arrested during different raids in the metropolis.

    He said the arrests were carried out in areas around motor parks and hospitals.

    He said, although, the suspects were released after confirming that they were first time offenders but they were warned by the officers of the board.

    The officer disclosed that 30 missing “street children” (almajiri) were brought by good Samaritan for safe return to their various schools.

    He said the board had received 36 cases on matrimonial disputes, disputes between neighbours, prostitution and lost but found.

    Nuhu urged people to shun begging and learn to use their hands for productive ventures to better their lives.

    Violation of the law banning street begging in the state attracts a minimum of three months jail term.

    Hisbah Board arrests 21 beggars in one week – Official

    Kano State Hisbah Board said on Tuesday that it had arrested 21 beggars for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state in one week.

    Malam Umar Yahaya, the Public Relations Officer of the Board, disclosed this while speaking in Kano.

    Yahaya said that the suspects were arrested in different raids in the metropolis, adding that eight of them were children, while 13 were adults.

    The public relations officer explained that the arrests were carried out in areas around Bata, Bank and Kabuga roads.

    He added that the board had released 11 of them after being identified as first time offenders, while the rest 10 were taken to court.

    Yahaya enjoined beggars to acquire vocational skills to sustain themselves rather than rely on street begging for livelihood.

    Hisbah is the enforcement arm of Sharia Law.

    Kano Hisbah Board arrests 65 beggars in one month

    Kano State Hisbah Board said it had arrested about 65 suspected beggars for violating the law banning street begging in the state.

    Malam Dahiru Muhammed, an official of the Hisbah Anti Begging Unit, disclosed this while speaking in the state on Tuesday.

    Muhammed said that the suspects were arrested in different raids in the Kano metropolis in November, adding that eight of the arrested were children, while 57 were adults.

    According to him, 47 of them were from Kano, while 18 were from Bauchi, Jigawa, Gombe, Kogi and Zamfara States.

    Muhammed said the arrests were carried out in areas around Bata, Bompai, Bank and Kabuga roads, all in the metropolis.

    He said that the Hisbah Board decided to release some of the suspects who were identified as first offenders, as well as those suffering from mental disorder.

    Muhammed said those from neighbouring states were also taken back to their respective states.

  • 489 arrested for street begging in Kano

    The Kano State Hisbah Board said it had arrested 489 beggars in February and March for allegedly violating the law banning street begging in the state.

    Malam Musa Tsangaya, Head of the Anti-begging Unit of the board, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano that 192 of those arrested were children while 228 were adults.

    “Our men arrested the street beggars around France Road, Dangi Junction, Lugard Road, Murtala Mohammed Way and Magwan Junction violating the law banning street begging in Kano metropolis.

    “Out of the 489 beggars, 314 were adults, both male and female, while 175 were children who engaged in begging by the road side and in the premises of major businesses,” Tsangaya said.

    He stated that 300 of the arrested beggars hailed from Kano city, while 237 were from Jigawa, Katsina and Kaduna.

    According to him, the remaining nine are from Cameroon and Niger Republic.

    Tsangaya said some of them had been charged to court, while four of them suffer mental disorder.

    The Kano State Hisbah Board, on Thursday said it had arrested 966 beggars in January for allegedly violating the law banning street begging on major streets of the state capital.

    According to Malam Musa Tsangaya, the officer in charge of the Anti-begging Unit of the board, 203 of those arrested were children while 755 were adults.

    “Our men arrested 966 street beggars around Bank Road, Civic Centre, Dangi Junction, Luggard Road and Magwan Junction violating the law banning street begging in Kano metropolis.

    “Out of the 966 beggars, 755 were adults, both male and female, while 203 were children who engaged in begging in by the road sides and in the premises of major businesses,” Tsangaya said.

    He stated that 390 of the arrested beggars hailed from Kano city, while 576 were from Jigawa, Katsina and Kebbi.

    According to him, the remaining three are from Cameroon and Niger Republic.

    Mass wedding: Kano screens 1,000 prospective couples

    The Kano State Hisbah Board said it had commenced medical screening of 1,000 prospective couples for the next Mass Wedding Programme in the state.

    NAN reports that no fewer than 4, 395 prospective couples were registered by the state government to participate in the programme.

    The Director General of the board, Dr Abba Sufi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Friday that the screening which started last week was aimed at ensuring the health status of the couples before the marriage.

    “The medical screening started about eight days ago and it is intended to ascertain the health status of each and everyone of them.

    “The screening is mandatory as it will enable the board and each partner to know the health status their partners before the marriage is conducted,” he said.

    Sufi said the medical screening was in preparation for the conduct of the programme scheduled to take place after the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

    “The state government has planned to conduct the programme after Sallah, hence the decision to start the screening of the couples in time,” Sufi said.

    He said the state government under the leadership of Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje was committed to the success of the programme as it would check prostitution especially among indigent unmarried young girls and widows.

    NAN recalls that no fewer than 5,000 indigent unmarried young men and women benefited from the programme during the administration of former Gov. Rabi’u Kwankwaso who introduced it in 2012.
