  • Fire guts female hostel at Kano varsity

    Dangote Female Hostel at the Kano State University of Science and Technology KUST Wudil has been gutted by fire last night.

    Confirming the fire outbreak via telephone to our reporter, the Deputy Head of Information, Publications and Public Relations Unit of the University, Abdullahi Datti, said the incident occurred around 9.30 pm and lasted for about 2 hours, destroying some part of the building.

    He said that the inferno could have been caused by suspected electrical spark, following the restoration of full current electricity to the University.

    He added that the management swiftly alerted some relevant agencies including the Fire Services at federal and state levels who quickly responded and controlled the situation.

    Datti who could not ascertain the level of damages as at the time of filing this report noted that there was no casualty recorded considering the fact that the students were already at home due to the ongoing ASUU’s nationwide strike.

  • Kano support FG’s school feeding programme

    Kano state government has reiterated its commitment to continue supporting Home Grown Schools Feeding Programme of the Federal Government for the nutritious and economics development of the programme to the people of the state.

    The state Governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje made this known at the Town Hall meeting to sensitized the stake holders and state vendors of the Home Grown Schools Feeding Programme held at the state capital.

    The Governor who was represented by his Deputy Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna said, a school feeding is not new to Kano State as the state, the Community Reorientation Committee (CRC) and local governments in the state was since engaged in the activity of feeding programme of the primary schools pupils in the state.

    He further said that engaging of the Federal government in the programme has brings a lot of improvement, and he therefore thanked them for supporting the programme.

    “It is not only about the feeding the programme is about many things, one of these is the issue of the children and their nutrition which will give our children balance diet ” Gawuna pointed out.

    In an area of economics development, Gawuna said “The programme also supporting the local manufacturers and farmers where you find out a lot of economics activities has been revived”.

    He then thanked the National office of the programme for including a lot of local producers in the programme.

    On his part, the operational manager of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme Mr Dotin Adebayo said that the essence of the programme is to increase the school enrollment in the country and to empower people to increase the local agricultural products.

    He further said, the programme is also aiming to tackle unemployment and to build the capacity of women in the country.

    He also added that the programme has covered 26 states in the federation, hoping to cover 30 states in the next month.

    He therefore appreciated the effort of the state government for giving maximum support to the programme urging the other states to copy from Kano.

  • Kano partners NGO’s to provide limbs to 190 amputees

    Kano state government has provided artificial limbs to 190 people with amputated limbs free.

    The state Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje disclosed this while supervising the exercise, organized by Kano state government in collaboration with Tolaram Foundation and JIBWIS, at Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital, Giginyu in the state capital.

    The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, said  “the gesture will restore hope of living with minimal physical challenges”.

    Dr. Ganduje commended Tolaram foundation for its commitment to charity, assuring of the government’s support and cooperation for the successful delivery of the programme.

    The Governor also reiterated his administration’s resolve to continue to attach more priority to the health sector through, among others, equipping major hospitals with modern facilities, with a view to ensuring effective health care delivery system.

    He, therefore, called on the clients to utilize the limbs provided to them well, as they would restore a significant part of their ability to conduct their day-to-day activities smoothly.

    Earlier in his remarks, the state commissioner of health, Dr Kabir Ibrahim Getso said Kano state in collaboration with Talaram Foundation and JIBWIS provided the intervention free to the clients with the amputated limbs in the state.

    On his part, the coordinator of the Foundation Dr Usman Idris Funtua explained that Kano state is one of the states in 19 northern states that have been sponsoring the programme.

    He added that the Foundation in its five years activities in the country had donated three thousand, seven hundred and ninety one prosthetic limbs to the amputies as Kano state benefited most in the programme.

    Some of the beneficiaries who had benefited from the programme in the state expressed their profound appreciation to the state government, Toleram foundation and JIBWIS for the gesture accorded to them.

  • One dead, seven injured in Kano auto crash

    Kano State Fire Service says one person died while seven others sustained injuries when two vehicles had a head-on collision at Naibawa en’katako on the ever-busy Zaria road in Kano.

    Alhaji Saidu Mohammed, spokesman for the fire service told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano that the accident occurred at about 8:52am on Thursday.

    “We received a distress call from one Malam Ibrahim Mohammed at about 08:52am that there was an accident on Zaria Road.

    “On receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel and vehicle to the scene of the incident at about 09:06am to rescue the victims,” Mohammed said.

    He said that two vehicles, a bus, with registration number FKY 236 QA and a truck with registration number SI 820 FKK were found to have been involved in a head-on collision at the scene of the accident.

    Mohammed attributed the accident to speed limit violation which resulted to loss of control by the drivers.

    He said the firemen took the victims to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where the doctor on duty confirmed one dead while the remaining seven victims who sustained varying degrees of injuries were receiving treatment.

    He appealed to motorists to obey traffic regulations so as to stay alive and minimise accidents on the road.

  • Kano Assembly turns down apology of suspended KASCO MD

    The Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday turned down an apology letter sent to the House by the suspended Managing Director of Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), Malam Bala Inuwa.

    The lawmakers rejected the apology tendered by Iunwa shortly after the Speaker, Alhaji Kabiru Rurum, who presided over the plenary session read the letter to the House.

    According to Rurum, the suspended managing director in the letter said his action was not intended to disrespect the legislators and the assembly.

    A member representing Tarauni Constituency, Alhaji Abubakar Zakari while contributing to the debate, said that Inuwa should first apologise through the media before the apology will be considered by the assembly.

    Zakari said that the suspended managing director was heard on radio interview boasting that the legislature has no power to suspend him.

    “The suspended managing director must go through the media first and apologise to the legislators.

    “What he did was capable of tarnishing the image of the assembly,’’ he said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Zakari submission was debated and supported by the members.

    The members adopted the submission and ordered Inuwa to appear before the House committee on Agriculture to resolve the issue.

    The committee was given six days to present its report before the House.

    The assembly had ordered the state government to suspend the Managing Director following his failure to appear before the House committee on Agriculture to defend the proposed 2019 budget.

    The assembly declared zero allocation to the agency due to the failure of the managing director to appear before the house to defend the propsed budget.

  • 2019: Kano CP guarantee residents of maximum security

    The Kano state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Rabi’u Yusuf has assured residents of the state that adequate securities have been put in place to guaranteed their safety before, during and after the forthcoming general elections.

    Yusuf also urged the non-indigenes not to relocate to their states but remain and exercise their franchise without fear.

    He gave the assurance when the state’s Election Peace Committee, led by its chairman Professor Ibrahim H. Umar, paid him a courtesy visit at the police headquarters.

    The Nation reports that the committee visited the commissioner to seek his support in its quest for a peaceful conduct of 2019 general elections in the state.

    The committee identified Kano as one of the most volatile states in the country during political activities given its cosmopolitan nature, hence the need for police support to guarantee safety of lives and properties during the electioneering period.

    Yusuf assured the committee that necessary measures had already been taken to ensure the success of the elections.

    “We have already conducted security threat analysis in the state in which we were able to identify some flash points that may likely pose security threat during the electioneering period and necessary action has been taken against the areas.’’

    On the recent violence experienced in Rano, Bichi and Dawakin Tofa, where two persons were reportedly killed during a political rally, the commissioner said some arrests had been made, while investigation was still in progress.

    Earlier, Co-chair of the committee and the Catholic Bishop of Kano Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr John Namaza Niriying, commended the commissioner of police for the relative peace in the state, urging him to maintain the tempo throughout the election period and beyond.

    “We implore you to maintain your neutral status as security agency, as emphasized by President Muhammadu Buhari at the inauguration of his campaign council, so that your prestige and integrity would continue to be preserved and upheld in the eyes of the public.

    “We also wish to request you to expedite action in bringing those responsible for the death of some people during political rallies at Rano, Bichi and recently at Dawakin Tofa, to book so that it will serve as deterrence to others”

  • Kano clears air over court order against Ganduje, wife

    Kano state government, on Tuesday, expressed shock, over the antics of desperate politicians bent on truncating the gubernatorial candidature of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in the March 2, 2019 election by banking on a court order, purportedly issued by an Abuja High Court, seeking an accelerated hearing in a suit to compel EFCC to arrest and prosecute Ganduje’s wife, Dr. Hafasat.

    In a statement, signed by the Commissioner for Information, Youth and Culture, Malam Muhammad Garba, expressed surprise at the timing of the release of the court order, ostensibly to embarrass Dr. Hafsat Ganduje, emphasizing that the order is a fabrication, which does not exist.

    Furthermore, it emphasized the extent of their desperation to rubbish Governor Ganduje and the APC government, the plaintiff in the suit, the Incorporated Trustees of Hope Development and Empowerment, filed the case in November 2018 and December 10 was fixed for mention but were neither in the court nor were their representatives, ‘’only for them to release the purported court order at this material time.’’

    Also disgusting, according to the statement was the call for arrest and prosecution of the governor’s wife and substitution of the governor’s name by the APC, as its candidate in Kano were not included in the plaintiff’s prayers.

    ‘’The plaintiff requested the court order to grant substituted service of the writ of summon, hence for them to serve the defendants through Kano state Liaison House in Abuja, which was what the court granted,’’ the statement added.

    However, Garba  assured that the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice is handling the matter, calling on the good people of Kano state and members of the APC to remain calm in the face of this intimidation, which will come to pass as other evil machination by desperate politicians.

  • 2019: Ganduje kick starts guber campaign

    Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state has kick-started his gubernatorial campaign in Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency, where hundreds of thousands of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gave him a resounding reception at the campaign ground at Tudun Wada.

    Impressed by the turn out, he expressed his satisfaction and showed how encouraging the turn out was, adding that, “This shows how satisfied you are with the way we are developing the state and how President Muhammadu Buhari is also developing the country.”

    He urged people to always compare the state of the nation before 2015 and now, after President Buhari is captaining the ship, challenging that, “It is very clear for all, that President Buhari’s coming to power from 2015, saves Nigeria from collapsing.

    That is why we are still saying, he alone, among all other presidential contestants for the 2019 Presidential election, has the capacity to further develop our fatherland, Nigeria. We should give him another chance to continue with what he started. We all believe that continuity is the answer.”

    He commissioned a power project at Gada Biyu town, of Tudun Wada local government, that before now plunged the area in total darkness, with some other projects like bridge among others. The governor assured the people that his administration would continue to deliver the good work it has been doing.

    For the citizens to reflect back to the good things done to the areas, the governor reminded them of the many developmental projects also executed by the local governments, other federal government’s intervention in the area and some other projects done by both federal and national legislators as part of their interventions for the development of their areas.

    Ganduje urged people to come en mass during the forthcoming election and cast their votes for Buhari, reminding them that, “I urge you to always remember, we promised to give our President Muhammadu Buhari, about 5 million votes. We should try and get this through our full participation at election time.”

    “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is taking Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to Wards across the nation. I am calling on people to make sure that they go and collect their PVCs. It is only when we have our voters cards that we can be able to support the coming back of President Buhari for the second tenure,” Ganduje pleads.

    Followers of Kwankwasiyya political group, 6,700 in number, within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) followers of the former governor Engineer Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, dump Kwankwaso group and joined the APC, courtesy governor Ganduje.

    They described their joining of the ruling APC as timely and all-important. Assuring that, they would always work hard for the victory of the party at all levels.and are encouraged on what Buhari and Ganduje are doing for the development of the state and the country, in general, is open and clear for all to see.

    After receiving a gift of a bag of rice, from Farmers Club under Sani Sarkin Noma, as a show of their appreciation on how Ganduje agricultural policies boost agriculture in the state, the governor commended Buhari for initiating a policy which abhors importation of rice to the country.

    Nigerians, according to him, should first and foremost, commend Buhari for encouraging economic diversification largely through agriculture and other sectors of the economy.

    “At the state level, we found it necessary to copy from the federal government’s initiatives. That was why we did our possible best to reinvigorate our fertiliser plant, that was abandoned for over two decades.

    As I am making this speech here, our Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO) is fully operational with unprecedented capacity. That we even take our fertiliser to other neighbouring states.

    Fertiliser is no longer our problem in Kano now. We have since passed that stage, where you will see government distributing fertiliser to farmers. We have it in abundance and we take it to other states,” he explains.

    Governor Ganduje urged traditional rulers of both Doguwa and Tudun Wada, to give their helping hand in seeing that peaceful election holds during the forthcoming elections. “As fathers of the land, yours should always be finding ways to encourage peace and tranquillity before, during and after elections.”

    He made the call when he visited the District Heads of Doguwa and Tudun Wada at their respective palaces. He also urged them to inform their communities on the importance of collection of PVCs for the election ahead of them.

    “Awareness creation campaign from the fathers of the land is necessary. So that full citizens participation in the election can be recorded as well,” Ganduje insists.

  • Hunters’ clash: Kano govt opens investigation

    Kano state government has ordered a full-scale investigation into the circumstances that led to the bloody clash between groups of local hunters in Ganduje town, Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area, in which one person lost his life and two others sustained serious injuries.

    In a Statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, Youths and Culture, Malam Muhammad Garba, Kano state government in strongest terms, condemned the clash.

    The statement added that already security operatives have been drafted to the area to fish out those behind the dastardly act.

    The statement also described, “Attempts by some selfish individuals to link the clash with Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s visit to the town to attend a wedding Fatiha as not only uncalled for, but a clear mischief and cheap blackmail.”

    The statement further noted that, ‘’While it is true that Governor Ganduje was in the town to attend a wedding Fatiha, the clash between the rival hunters erupted after the Governor left the town.”

    The statement, however, assured that the state government will not fold its arms and allow disgruntled elements to disturb the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the state and promised to continue to work towards protection of lives and properties of the people in the state.

    It also admonished citizens to develop the spirit of tolerance, patience and obedience to constituted authorities at all times.
