FG anti corruption fight, good omen for Nigeria – Shekarau

Former Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has lauded the anti corruption fight by President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as a good omen.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)reports that the former Kano State governor, made this disclosure to newsmen in Sokoto on Monday.

Shekarau said: ” The efforts by the president to fight corruption in all its ramifications is good for Nigeria.

“Anybody, who gets any money fraudulently should be arrested, thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.

“I am a strong advocate of anti corruption fight, as I set up an anti corruption and public complaints commission in Kano State in 2005”.

The chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), however, cautioned against selective justice in the anti corruption war.

Shekarau further urged that ”nobody should be above the law in this direction; there should also be respect, adherence and respect for the rule of law.

“You are innocent until you are proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt,” the former minister added.

On security, Shekarau called for improved funding of the nation’s security agencies.

This, he noted, would ensure the provision of ultramodern weapons, logistics, training, retraining, as well as the need to improve their welfare.

On agriculture, the former governor called for the reintroduction of commodity boards in the country.

He said: “This will add value to farming, boost food security and encourage farmers.

“Food security is next to nothing and any nation that fails to provide it remains weak and vulnerable”.

On politics, Shekarau said,” PDP will bounce back and reclaim its lost glory in 2019″.

  • Three million Almajiris roam Kano streets – Ganduje

Three million Almajiris roam Kano streets – Ganduje

The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Thursday observed that there are about three million Almajiri children roaming the streets in the state.

The Governor stressed the need for the seven states of the North West to identify the economic advantages they can use to move the region forward and tackle their common social problems.

He said: “These seven states, should try, identify the economic advantages that we can lay our hands on as to move this region forward. And what are the social problems that we are having? In Kano, we undertook a survey and we found out that we have more than three million Almajiris and Almajiri syndrome is one of the serious problems that we have in the north-west geopolitical zone.

“What we discovered from our survey is that many of these Almajiris come from the Niger Republic, some from Chad, Northern Cameroon and some from other states of the north-west.

“So, if we can come together and have a common synergy to introduce a common legislation, preventing the movement of school age children from one place to another, I think the states will find it very easy to address the problem of Almajiri syndrome.

“I thank the governor of Kaduna state for creating this kind of environment for us to come together, as especially for us to discuss the economic integration of the north-west zone.

“This is the first time, since the inception of this democracy in 1999, where the seven governors (of the north-west zone) decided to come together to form a forum. We even went to the extent of employing a consultant who is giving us the green light on various issues on economic development.

“First of all, let me start with the position of the North-west in Nigeria. We are the most populous geopolitical zone, constituting 25 percent of the population of Nigeria. With regards to land mass, we have 23 percent of the land mass in Nigeria. What we require now is the political will to come together and be fully integrated – socio-economic integration beyond paper integration, an integration that will bring development in terms of institutions and in terms of programmes that will improve the quality of lives of our people.

“It will be very important to have an integration commission which looks into the development capacity of our institutions, because whatever we want to do, if our institutions are not developed, then whatever we do may not be actualised. Also, it is very important to have data so that we know our point of strength so that we know the comparative advantages we have. So if we can get a data bank, it will assist us to quicken the process of the integration.

“Another issue is that we are individually conducting our educational programmes, if we come together to see how we can have different programmes in our university curriculum, it will help us specialised and we can even build universities that will specialise in the various programmes, thereby saving energy and resources for the development of our region.

“The potentials of the north-west are very obvious. The north-west has the highest water density in the whole of west Africa. The amount of water is such that they can feed the whole of West Africa and this is something that needs to be tapped”, Governor Ganduje said.

  • ‘Seized vehicles in Kano not linked to any Senator’

Mr. Joseph Attah, Acting Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Customs Service(NCS), says the ongoing investigation on the seized vehicles in Kano state has not been linked to any Senator.

Attah announced this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Attah said the allegation was false and capable of misleading the general public.

“Since this is capable of misleading the public into wrong insinuations, it is imperative to state the fact that the operatives of NCS Compliance Team, based on credible intelligence, trailed the movement of some smuggled vehicles from Maigatari, Jigawa State, to a house at Magaji Rumfa, GRA Kano.

“On Feb.7, 2017,  some 11 vehicles, 10 Hilux and one Land cruiser jeep were retrieved from the house at Magaji Rumfa GRA, Kano and taken for detention at the Headquarter of Customs Area Command Kano.

“The Customs officers discovered there were no occupants in the house, hence the gate was forced opened to retrieve the smuggled vehicles.

“The investigation into the smuggling of the vehicles is still on to establish the true owner.

“It is clear that whoever introduced the Senator angle to the story is out for pure mischief and does not represent the position of the service on this issue,” Attah said.

He called on Nigerians to discountenance the false and misleading report.

He believed that the introduction of the warehousing receipt programme, farmers would keep their products safely until when the commodity appreciated.

According to him, if any member requires money during the period his product is warehoused, the association would offer them the interest-free loan, to repay after selling the produce.

Rabi’u said under the programme, farmers would get 30 per cent value of their products as loan and would be made to pay a token for warehousing their commodity.

The chairman disclosed that the association had set up a committee to recover the loan disbursed to its members under the CBN anchor borrower programme.

“Harvesting has commenced and we have set up a committee for loan recovery which will soon commence its assignment.”

He called on farmers to ensure prompt payment of the loan, to avoid any embarrassment.

  • Dangote Tomato signs MoU with farmers in Gombe, Sokoto

Dangote Tomato signs MoU with farmers in Gombe, Sokoto

The Dangote Tomato Processing Company, Kadawa, Kano state has concluded arrangement to purchase fresh tomatoes from farmers in Gombe and Sokoto States.

The company had already signed an agreement with Tomato Growers Association for the procurement of the commodity from the two states.

The Managing Director of the company, Alhaji Abdulkarim Kaita disclosed this in Kano on Tuesday.

He said that the company found it necessary to go into the agreement following the non-availability of the commodity in Kano and other neighbouring states that produced it in large commercial quantities.

He noted that the CBN anchor borrower programme had adversely affected tomato the production this irrigation season, especially in Kano State where many farmers shifted to wheat and rice production.

“The wheat and rice loans given to farmers this year have affected tomato production in the state.

“This is the reason why the product is still costly as a big basket which was between N400 and N500 last year, is now N3, 000 in the market. “So we cannot buy it at the present price.

“When the price was between N400 and N500, we used to buy from farmers at N1, 200 per basket,” Kaita said.

He said that the company would continue to monitor the situation until it was satisfied that the commodity was available to enable the factory resume production.

“If we resume production now, the commodity will be scarce and once it is scarce, the price will go up. This is what we don’t want for now,’’ he said.

On why the company did not give farmers loan to produce the commodity as it did in the past, Kaita said that out of the 100 farmers that benefited from the loan, only 20 of them were able to repay the facility.

“So we cannot give them another loan now since most of them have yet to repay the earlier loan they enjoyed, “Kaita said.

He said that as soon as the commodity was available for processing, the factory would resume normal production.

“We are ready to resume production because all our machines are in good condition and ready for operation,” he added.
