UPDATED: Protest rocks Kano as policeman kills teenager, injures two

A Police Inspector, name withheld, has been arrested for erroneously killing a teenager in Kano on Wednesday.

It was gathered some gangs of political thugs clashed on Wednesday morning, disrupting peace in the area.

The police personnel deployed to the scene of the incident decided to shoot and release teargas canisters to disperse the thugs. Unfortunately, three persons were shot, eyewitnesses said.

Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, said he acted “unprofessionally,” when, without receiving any command from the existing chain of command, fired a shot.

His shot also wounded two persons. The victim who died was receiving treatment at the Hospital before he gave up, police said.

Youths took to the streets in Kurna quarters along Katsina Road to protest the killing.

The protesters blocked the ever-busy Kano-Katsina-Daura highway for several hours, causing hardship to commuters and motorists who got stuck in the trouble zone.

The demonstration raised tension amid an alleged planned protest by a political group against the judgment of the Appeal Court on the state governorship election.

Police spokesman, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, in a statement said the police have regretted the action by the happy-trigger Inspector.

He added that the police commissioner, while commiserating with the family of the deceased, has constituted a panel to probe the killing, assuring that justice would be served.

Gumel appealed to the peace loving people of Kano not to allow “hijackers” to dabble devilishly into the matter to instigate the escalation of violence which will not be in the interest of the State, which he said, was in its trying time.

“The Police Command is following up on the unfortunate development that occurred in Kurna Quarters, Fagge local government area of Kano State on November 28, where groups of rival restive youths engaged in fighting and a Police Inspector who did not receive any command from the existing chain of Command fired a shot and unfortunately wounded two persons with one other person who died while receiving treatment at the Hospital.

“It is in the forgoing development that the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Usaini Gumel, directed the Area Commander Dala, Nuhu Mohammed Digi to fish out the erring Police Inspector with a view to constituting a board of inquiry into the cause of the incident of which the outcome will be communicated to the public.

“Few hours later, the Police Inspector has since been arrested and is now in Police custody.

“This action of the Police Inspector is quite regrettable. This is because, since the commissioner assumed office, the Police have never entered into confrontation with the members of the public, talk less of firing gunshot.

“It is a known fact that the Police Command is fully committed to the respect of rights and freedom of all people. Therefore, the Command is calling on members of the public to be rest assured that justice will be served in handling the situation which is quite strange when compared with the cordial relationship existing between the Police and the Public,” the statement said.

Kano CTC: Judicial officers involved will be punished – NJC

The certified true copy (CTC) of the Kano State governorship election appeal at the Court of Appeal in Abuja is the subject of an investigation by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

There has been confusion and broad criticism of the CTC resulting from the appellate court’s decision on Friday, November 17, which dismissed Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and replaced him with Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on the grounds that he was not a party member.

The certified true copy (CTC) has been a source of controversy because it contained a different judgment than the one the court announced.

Umar Mohammed Bangari, the Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, acknowledged clerical flaws in the document in a statement on Wednesday, November 22, but he insisted that the court’s decision remains valid.

In an interview with Daily Trust, the head of the delegation said that the petitions had been received and that the council would handle them in accordance with the regulations.

He said: “The petitions that have been written would not be taken immediately, they would have to go through the preliminary complaint assessment, those people would look at it, then send to the plenary, then plenary would look at it and they would set up a committee to look into and the judge and the petitioner would come with their lawyers.”

The senior official stated that the NJC’s probe will proceed even though Governor Yusuf’s attorney chose to include the CTC in the topics of the Supreme Court appeal.

Appeal Court judgment: Group uncovers plot to cause unrest in Kano

A pro-democracy group, Progressive League of Youth Voters (PLYV) has alerted the Inspector General of the Police, Director General, Department of State Services, and other security agencies of alleged plans to cause unrest in Kano on Wednesday, November 29, over the Appeal Court judgment on the Kano state governorship election.

The group in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, November 28, by its national coordinator, Audu Usman Shuaibu accused the state government of masterminding the proposed protest, which they alleged is intended to cause mayhem in the metropolitan city of Kano.

Unveiling the protest, Shuaibu alleged that plans have been concluded by the government to convey thousands of rioters in the guise of its supporters from the 44 local government areas of the state into the Kano metropolis to protest against the loss of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) at the Appeal Court.

The statement read: “We wish to alert the general public and call on the attention of the Inspector General of Police, Director General, Department of State Services and other security agencies towards the inhuman activities of the Governor of Kano State Abba Kabir Yusuf over his electoral loss at the Appeal Court.

“Our team in Kano State has informed us that the NNPP-led Kano State Government has concluded plans to convey thousands of rioters in the guise of its supporters from the 44 local government areas of the State into Kano Metropolis on Wednesday to protest against the NNPP loss at the Appeal Court.

“The State Government is using the over one hundred (100) luxurious buses purchased by the immediate past Governor of Kano State and the National Chairman of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje CFR to ease transportation of Kano residents while he was the Governor.

“The government is to convey these rioters as passengers which will enable them to bypass security agencies and cause mayhem in the State capital. The rioters have been mobilised and instructed to cause maximum mayhem in the city immediately upon arrival.

“The aim is to blackmail and frighten the Supreme Court panel of judges that will be sitting on the Kano State governorship appeal and force the Honourable Justices to reverse the Appeal Court decision in their favour.”

The group described the proposed protest as sheer blackmail that must be resisted by the judiciary and all well-meaning Nigerians.

It said: “It is disheartening to see a government saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and property plotting to kill and destroy property of citizens.
