Kano APC slams NNPP over eight-man London protest

The National Coalition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Stakeholders has berated the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for staging an eight-man demonstration in London on Sunday over the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal judgement.

The group described the demonstration as a show of shame and a plot to discredit the judiciary, and the Federal Government and drag the image of APC in the mud.

The tribunal had sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the NNPP due to irregularities, where over 165,000 votes were imprinted and  stuffed into the ballot boxes without the official stamp nor signature of the presiding officers.

Addressing reporters in Abuja yesterday, the National Secretary of the coalition, Isabella Odunayo, condemned the NNPP for distorting facts.

The group noted that since the judgment the NNPP-led Kano State Government had been peddling lies against the judiciary, the Federal Government and the APC. It said: “The NNPP desperation took them to London where it sponsored a protest to blackmail the Federal Government and discredit the tribunal judgement, unknowingly to the organisers, Nigerians in diaspora had watched clips of the jubilation that trailed the APC victory at the tribunal, thereby Nigerians in London ignored the sponsored protest.

“It is shameful that Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Kwankwasiyya Movement only got eight persons for a protest which targeted about 1000 people, a sign that Nigerians both home and in diaspora accepted the judgment in good faith.”

The group warned: “The judiciary cannot be intimidated by its threat as security agencies in Nigeria are fully prepared to secure the country.

“The eight people led by Dr Aminu Bello who embarrassed themselves yesterday in London do not represent the interest of Nigerians.

“It is barbaric and indeed archaic for the NNPP to toll the part of blackmail calling for justice in faraway London when justice has already been served with the judgment of the tribunal.

“It is unpalatable to speak ill of the judiciary because your stealing antics were uncovered. Abba Kabir Yusuf has no shame which is why he is still sponsoring the Campaign against the judiciary.

“We call on the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Service to commence an investigation of the out-going Kano State Governor Yusuf and the leadership of the NNPP ahead of their prosecution.

“It is by such actions that some desperate politicians may desist from rigging and instilling violence during elections.”

Independence Day: Protesters storm High Commission over Kano tribunal ruling

As Nigeria marked its 63rd Independence Day celebration, citizens in the diaspora stormed the High Commission in London, United Kingdom, to demand justice in the Kano governorship election trial..

The protesters, on Sunday, waved placards to drive home their insistence for an impartial and apolitical justice system that will be fair to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) government in Kano.

The messages on the placards include: “The Independence of a country depends on the Independence of its judiciary”; “Kano must not be robbed, Tinubu should allow justice to prevail in Kano”; “Kano people’s mandate must be allowed, no more unjust rulings”; “Abba’s mandate must not be stolen”.

“Tribunals must be just, Kano case must not be an exception”; “Keep politics out of our courts”; “Tribunal neutrality is non-negotiable. Kano people deserve justice, not politics”; “Defend democracy, demand fair tribunals. Kano people deserve justice.”

The convener, Dr. Aminu Bello, told journalists that they were at the embassy to protest the judgment delivered by the tribunal as it raised serious questions.

Bello said the 2023 general polls were a pivotal moment in the country’s history but that the recent verdict left many Nigerians disheartened and concerned about the integrity of the electoral process.

    Protester

“We want to emphasize a crucial point: it is only the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that has the legal authority to cancel votes, not tribunal judges. The judiciary’s role is to interpret the law and ensure justice is served, not to alter the will of the people expressed at the ballot box.

“We believe justice must be blind and that the rule of law must prevail in all circumstances. The recent judgment has raised questions about whether justice has truly been served in this instance. We call on all Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliation, to rise and fight for justice,” he charged.

The convener reminded the public that democracy thrives on the diversity of political voices and the competition of ideas, noting that Nigeria should never be reduced to a one-party system.

“The strength of democracy lies in a vibrant multi-party system where all citizens have a chance to express their choices. The mandate given to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf must be upheld and respected; stakeholders must ensure justice is served.

“We urge Nigerians to engage in peaceful, lawful, and constructive ways to demand transparency and accountability. Civil society organizations, political parties, and the international community should monitor the situation. The votes must not be stolen.

“We also ask relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial review of the Kano election tribunal judgment to ascertain its fairness and punish any judge who is found to have compromised,” Bello urged.

    • Judge labels govt action barbaric, unconstitutional
    • State government vows to appeal judgment

The recent spate of property demolition by the Kano State Government in the Kano metropolis appears to have landed it in trouble.

The Federal High Court sitting in Kano yesterday ordered it to pay N30 billion as compensation to a group of victims of the demolition – Incorporated Trustees of Massallacin Eid Shop Owners.

Justice Samuel Amobeda who handed down the verdict labeled the action of the state government barbaric and unconstitutional.

He said the demolition was unlawful as it did not follow the due processes of law.

The Incorporated Trustees of Masallacin Idi Shop Owners, Traders Association and 56 others, through their counsel, Dr Nuraddeen Ayagi, had prayed the court to order the state government to pay them N250 billion as damages.

They filed a motion ex parte seeking the enforcement of their fundamental rights, right to own properties and damages against the State Government for demolishing their shops.

The respondents in the suit are Kano State Government, Kano State Urban Development Authority, Attorney General of Kano, Nigeria Police, AIG Zone 1 and Commissioner of Police Kano.

Others are Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and NSCDC Kano Commandant.

In his judgment yesterday, Justice Amobeda said the demolition violated the Applicants’ right to own property, right to life cum livelihood and right to dignity.”

He  ordered the first to third respondents to jointly pay the applicants the sum of N10 billion as general damages for the breach  of the applicants’ fundamental right to life and ownership of property as guaranteed by law while the remaining  N20 billion is for punitive and exemplary damages.

He ordered immediate payment of the money.

In a swift response to the judgment yesterday, the state government signified its intention to process an appeal.

Attorney General and Justice Commissioner Haruna Isa Dederi described the judgment as a miscarriage of justice.

He said: “The Land Use Act is clear on the position of land in every state.

“The court lacks the jurisdiction to even listen to the case because government is the sole owner of land, according to the Land Use Act.”

Another Federal High Court had earlier restrained the state government from selling the land on which the demolished business properties were built.

The court categorically restrained the state government from “unlawfully alienating or transferring the title of applicants’ demolished business premises at Kofar Mata Eid Ground Kano, subject matter of this action to a Saudi foreign firm or any other person for any purpose whatsoever pending the hearing and determination of the substantive application.”

Governor Abba Yusuf had embarked on mass demolition of property in parts of the state, alleging that they were illegal.

Some of the demolished property were a  three-storey plaza consisting of over 90 shops on the Race Course, Nasarawa GRA and the almost completed 90-room five-star Daula Boutique Hotel.

Some residential buildings were also leveled with thousands of their inhabitants rendered homeless.

Governor Yusuf accused his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, of giving out public land to private individuals.

But Ganduje dismissed the allegation, saying that some of the structures were approved by his executive council as Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects.

Kano screens 1,800 prospective couples for mass wedding

The Kano State Government has commenced pre-marital screening of 1,800 prospective couples.

Eight different types of tests are being conducted, including genotype, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis A, B and C, and syphilis, among others.

The Public Relations Officer of KSACA, Aminu Bello Sani, said yesterday that the screening exercise was meant to ascertain their health and fitness, as part of the criteria for eligibility.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, inspected the exercise, which is taking place at the premises of Hisbah Board Headquarters.

The health commissioner said: “The screening is aimed at avoiding transmission of diseases from one partner to another and the community.”

Labaran said when in the course of the screening they find any disease, those that can be treated would be treated right away while those that need referral would be sent to a facility for further care or action.

The commissioner added that the state government will soon promulgate a law that will ensure pre-marital screening before wedlock.

He commended the Imams in the state for insisting on seeing the premarital certificate before consummating marriages, even prior to the transmission of the bill.

Director General of KSACA, Dr. Usman Bashir, said the screening was being held on cluster basis within two weeks and would cover between 30 and 50 sets of couples from each of the 44 local government areas.

Bashir commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for approving the ongoing screening to ascertain the health fitness, including HIV/AIDS status, of the couples intending to wed.

According to him, the United Nations has set a target to end HIV/AIDS infection by 2030, of which the premarital screening is one of the processes towards achieving the target.

    • Harassment of tribunal judges is an ill omen for justice delivery

In delivering its recent judgement annulling the election of Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as Kano State Governor and affirming the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nasir Gawuna, as duly elected, the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal denounced the harassment, intimidation and threats to the lives of its members in the course of trial. A member of the tribunal, Justice Benson Anya, in his judgement which ran from pages 225 to 228 of the tribunal’s verdict, lamented: “The judges of this tribunal were harassed, intimidated and made to run under cover. What is the offence of the judiciary?” He noted that respondents in the case, Yusuf and the NNPP, “took the position as was widely reported in the media – both print and social – that if they lose the case, they will kill the judges and put the residents of Kano on fire”.

Indeed, Kano State Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning Adamu Kabiya had openly threatened the lives of the judges if their judgement did not go his party’s way; although the governor is to be commended for promptly sacking him for such uncivil utterance. But so grave was the situation that the tribunal judges had to relocate from Kano and delivered their judgement virtually. As Justice Benson Anya submitted, “The respondents contributed heavily to the success of this petition. At the pleading stage they made critical admissions. At the trial stage they supplied critical and important documents. Yet at the judgement stage the 2nd respondent (Yusuf) does not want this tribunal to stand by justice by stating the truth of the matter”. Justice Anya was forceful in asserting: “My message to bandits in politics who want to take power by force is that the judiciary cannot be intimidated…The decision of the court must not be taken personal (sic) as to warrant an attack and violence against the judiciary’s functionaries as threatened by the 2nd and 3rd respondents”.

The phenomenon of threats against the judiciary in election petition cases is a function of heightened political partisanship, aggravated levels of political intolerance and unhealthy attitude of the political elite, such that losers in electoral contests never accept defeat no matter how obvious their loss at the polls. This inevitably makes the judiciary the ultimate determinant of electoral outcomes, with attendant severe pressure on the institution.

The extreme intolerance with which elections are contested is often vented on the judiciary where election petitioners expect victory at all costs, irrespective of the judicial merit of their cases. We will recall that before its judgement, the Presidential Elections Petition Court (PEPC) was subjected to similar threats, harassment and blackmail. Vice-presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, had on national television issued threats against the judges if judgement did not go the way he desired. Subtly threatening and inciting billboards with the inscription “All eyes on the judiciary” surfaced in Abuja and other parts of the country shortly before the PEPC was to deliver its judgement. There were also allegations against some of the judges, including Chief Justice of Nigeria Kayode Ariwoola, which turned out to be patently false. It is most likely that attempts to denigrate the judiciary and impugn the integrity of judges will continue even as aggrieved petitioners take their cases to the Supreme Court.

It is commendable and heartwarming that the PEPC, the Kano State tribunal and other election petition panels across the country have been bold and courageous to deliver justice as they deem proper in accordance with the evidence before them, despite threats and harassment. The penchant of aggrieved elements to blackmail and undermine the integrity of the judiciary in blind quest for electoral victory should further motivate judges to ensure that, more than ever before, they adhere to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and credibility in hearing and deciding cases before them.

The judges of the Kano State tribunal no doubt had every cause to be angry at the humiliating treatment meted to them, and this was reflected in their vehement condemnation of “the gang of red cap wearers who, like a violent and terrorist cult, chased us out of Kano and put us in the fear of our lives”. Yet, no degree of provocation should lure judges from courtesy and temperance in the use of language, lest the judiciary descend to the uncouth level of those elements who have no respect for truth, decency or the rule of law.

Justice Anya stated: “I am in no doubt that the security agencies know and are aware of those who removed their eyes from their case and put it on the judiciary. They are also aware of those who extended the threat further by declaring that they will kill the judges. The threat must not be swept under the carpet”. We agree entirely. It is curious that those who made open threats against the judiciary at various times have not been apprehended by the security agencies and made to face the law. These threats are dangerous portents with serious negative consequences for the institutional integrity of the judiciary as well as law and order necessary for a peaceful and stable society.

Clerics preach against disaffection in Kano

Prominent Islamic scholars in the North have frowned at the outcome of Kano State governorship election tribunal and urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to thread softly.

The clerics described the judgment as a subversion of the will of the people, which was freely given to Governor  Abba  Kabir.

In a statement, Sheik Ahmed  Musa  advised  President Bola   Ahmed Tinubu  not to give in to the antics of some top ranking members of the  opposition.

“We are calling on President  Tinubu not to yield to the antics of prominent members of the opposition who are trying to subvert the will of the people by snatching Kano which they clearly lost through the judiciary,” he said.

According to the clerics, the people of Kano State resoundingly voted for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) .

It added that “The reasonable thing to do is for members of the APC to wait for another four years to prepare and test their popularity rather than fomenting trouble.”

The clerics stated that having studied the judgment of the tribunal, they are convinced that an elaborate scheme has been put in motion to snatch the state from the NNPP.

Sheik Ahmed  Guruntu lamented that the electorate who defied everything on election day to elect Abba were shortchanged by the pronouncement of the tribunal.

Sheikh Atiku Abubakar Isah said  Governor  Kabir defeated  Nasir Gawuna and there  is no reason, no need to go to the tribunal.

“We all know the importance of Kano to the socio-political and economic life of the North. This is so because the state remains the barometer upon which the average Northerner guage the prevailing tempo of the country.

\”We call on our politicians to order and not to set the North and by extension the country on fire,”

Kano threatens to sanction private school owners over fee exploitation

The Kano state government has begun a crackdown on private schools that unilaterally increase school fees without following the laid down procedures.

It wants to stop what it calls “the excesses” of private school proprietors who force parents to buy books and uniforms from their schools.

The special adviser on Private and Voluntary Schools, Baba Umar, has issued a threat, saying the government would withdraw the license of any private secondary school that fails to fill and return the revalidation form issued to them.

He said the Kano state government would not fold its arms and allow such exploitation to continue, saying that the issuance of the forms to the private school proprietors was necessary so as to enable the government to have data on students in all the private schools.

Umar stated: “There are over 7,000 private schools in Kano. Umar told the press that only 3000 collected the revalidation forms and only 2, 000 plus have returned completed forms.

“Another sin of these schools is tax evasion. Umar noted that most of the schools that are supposed to remit a 10 percent tax on the school fees they collect to the state government have failed to do so, explaining that they are not operating within the ambit of the law.

“When I came onboard what I met was very pathetic because private schools were operating anyhow; they are exploiting parents through increasing exorbitant charges at their wish, despite the current economic situation the country is facing.

“An established law by the state government in 2004 mandates every private school to pay 10 percent of its total termly earnings to the state government as revenue, but unfortunately they are not complying, and this attitude will not be accepted.

“Unfortunately, I met records that private schools previously paid dues directly to the personal account of the former executive secretary of the board, which is a criminal act.”

The special adviser added that the government would do the needful as soon as it complete the revalidation exercise.

    • UNICEF: disease spread to 39 councils

The Director General of Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr. Mohammed Nasir Mahmoud, has said 520 children have died of suspected cases of diphtheria outbreak across the state.

Mahmoud announced this at a media briefing in Kano organised by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for journalists in Northwest states.

He said: “There is the data we generate through our disease surveillance and reporting system. Based on that report, this year, Kano has reported about 8,700 suspected cases of diphtheria and about 6,000 have been confirmed. About 520 children are suspected to have died of related illnesses this year alone.

“We track this record on daily basis. We believe the record is much more than what we are getting because the reporting system is not as it should be.”

Mahmoud, who said the state currently accounts for 80 per cent of the outbreak, assured all that efforts government at all levels and critical stakeholders were making efforts to reverse the ugly trend in order to meet the December target to combat and bring the disease under control across the country.

The UNICEF’s Chief of Kano Field Office, Mr. Rahama Farah said the disease has spread to 39 of the 44 local government areas in the state with eight metropolitan local government areas being the worst hit.

Farah, who expressed worry about the development, noted that the outbreak posed a threat to child survival, health and the well-being of children.

The agency boss said there is the need for support and collaboration to tackle the disease headlong.

“Recently, we have seen a surge in the number of reported diphtheria cases in Nigeria. The country is currently facing an outbreak of diphtheria that needs to be stopped and prevented.

“So far, the highest number of cases of diphtheria is reported from Kano State. For example, out of the 44 local government areas of Kano State, the diphtheria disease has spread to 39 LGAs.

“Since January 2023, Kano State reported over 5,800 cumulative cases of diphtheria in the state. Although there was a decline in reported case in June, as of July, the diphtheria cases have been on the rise. As of last week, over 400 suspected cases with 11 deaths have been reported in Kano State.

“Eight local government areas are the most affected. They are: Ungogo (2,651), Dala (989), Fagge (943), Gwale (714), Kumbotso (713), Nassarawa (538), Kano Municipal (506), and Tarauni (269),” he said.

Mahmoud said UNICEF had delivered 1.2 million doses of vaccines to the Kano State government, among other things, to support its response to the diphtheria outbreak.

Kano Assembly to reward tricyclist who returned missing N15m to owner

The Kano Assembly will reward a tricycle rider, Auwalu Salisu, 22, for his honesty and proven integrity.

The 40- member Assembly on Monday took a unanimous decision to contribute a percentage from their individual salaries to the tricyclist who returned a missing N15 million to the owner, a Chadian in Kano.

The N15 million when converted include 10.130 million CFA and N2.9 million.

During Monday’s plenary, member representing Doguwa constituency, Alhaji Salisu Muhammad, moved a motion for the House to reward Salisu.

“The tricycle rider, Auwalu Salisu, has proven his integrity by returning missing money, despite his family’s condition and the economic hardship in the country,” he said.

All the 40 members representing 44 local government areas in Kano supported the motion.

Kano Speaker Alhaji Isma’il Jibril Falgore, who presided over the sitting, said the legislature will invite the tricycle rider to officially collect the donation from them.

The lawmakers said the support will motivate Salisu, as they urged other Nigerians to emulate his good character.

The N15 million was forgotten by a passenger who came from Chad to buy goods in Kano.

Salisu, a resident of Yankaba in Nasarawa local government area of Kano state, said he returned the money after an announcement about the missing money on a radio station in Kano.

He said he did not notice that his passenger had forgotten the money until he got home.

“After discovering the money, I told my parents about it but they ordered me to go and look for the owner,” he said.

Salisu, now with the money in search of the owner, had to drive from Badawa to Bata market.

He however, did not discover the owner and had to go back and inform his parents about his predicament.

“I went back home and gave the money to my mother who kept it inside her wardrobe. I was afraid and eager to hand over the money to the owner, whom I didn’t know,” he told newsmen.

As the family thought of what to do next, they heard an announcement on the radio about the missing money. Through a phone number, Salisu returned the money.

The owner of the money, who spoke through his brother Musa Hassan, said he never thought good people like Salisu still exist.

It was gathered he gave N400,000 to the honest chap, praising his parents for raising him properly.
