  • Police arrest 24 for drugs, thuggery, others in Kano

    The Kano state Police Command has arrested 24 suspects within the state metropolis in connection with various crimes ranging from dealing in hard drugs, weaponry and armed robbery.

    Briefing Reporters at the Command headquarters on Wednesday, the Command’s spokesman, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, said the suspects arrested were in possession of substances such as cocaine, Indian Hemp, Suck-and-die, tramadol tablets, solution and other intoxicating and injectable drugs.

    Haruna said others were also apprehended with all forms of weaponry like sticks, knives, cutlasses, swords, and other unconventional locally made marchets used in terrorizing inhabitants and political thuggery.

    According to him, “on March 1, 2019, the duo of Mujahid Abubakar of Angwar Shano, Katsina state and Illya Garba of Mazan Guide village, in Gabasawa Local Government of Kano state were arrested at Sabon Gari market for dealing in the bulk sale of hard drugs.”

    He said the suspects confessed to the commission of the crime, while efforts are being made to arrest their accomplice and arraign them before the court of law for prosecution.

    He said that “on the 28 February 2019, one Mohammed Abdullahi of Hotoro quarters, Kano, a distributor of cocaine substance was arrested with four wraps of cocaine recovered from him, while investigation is in progress.

    “Also on March 2, one Salisu Mohammed of Yakasai quarters Kano stabbed his football coach, one Mustapha Musa with a knife. The victim died on the spot. The suspect has been arrested with an exhibit of knife as investigation is in progress.”

    Haruna said items recovered from the suspects include 39, 000 tablets of exol 5, 21,000 tablets of psychosis 5, 166,000 bottles of diazepam, 7,000 bottles of tranzile injection, 2,150 pieces tramadol injection, 8,000 pieces of Ejon merinetin injection, 40 pieces of penzozine injection, 14 pieces of voltean injection, 1600 pieces of cocadamol injection, including a sack containing used drugs.

  • NNPC to build IPP in Abuja, Kaduna, Kano

    • Firm recovers N771m assets from marketers

    The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) plans to build more Independent Power Plants (IPP) in Abuja, Kaduna and Kano so as to add 4,0000 megawatts (Mw) of power to stabilise the national grid.

    In addition, it said a fertilizer plant is billed for Brass, Bayelsa State.

    Also, NNPC said it has recovered assets valued at over N771million from marketers who under-paid for petroleum products lifted from the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Kaduna Depot.

    Chairman, NNPC Anti-Corruption Committee, Mike Balami, said the committee, in collaboration with the Federal Government’s Intelligence and Anti-Corruption agencies, the Department of State Security Services (DSS), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), recovered the assets from  defaulting marketers.

    Its Chief Financial Officer and Chairman,  Board of NNPC Power subsidiary, Gas and Power Investment Company (GPIC), Isiaka Abdulrazaq, made this known at the inaugural board meeting of GPIC at the NNPC Towers, in Abuja.

    The GPIC was established as a subsidiary under the Gas and Power Directorate to enable the corporation monetise the abundant gas resources in the country for the benefit of the nation’s economy.

    Abdulrazaq said the GPIC is a very strategic company through which the NNPC will create more value for the country, stressing that by the time the IPPs come on stream in Abuja, Kaduna and Kano, the Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the areas would be better for it.

    “The Gas and Power Investment Company Limited (GPIC) is a company which the NNPC has set up basically to focus on how it can create value and monetise the nation’s abundant gas resources. The company will also be focused on developing power stations, fertilizer plants as well as petrochemical plants across the states,” Abdulrazaq stated.

    He said NNPC has set up the board to enable the company achieve its set targets within a very short period of time, saying the board  has mapped out strategies to properly guide the company to enable it achieve its Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

    He said the company will add value in terms of payment of taxes and generating more revenue for the country, stressing that the company and all the IPPs will generate more job opportunities for Nigerians.

    Abdulrazaq said the Fertilizer Project in Brass, will produce fertilizer to boost agriculture in the Southsouth and other regions of the country.

    Also, the Chief Operating Officer, Gas and Power,  Saidu Mohammed, said that the coming on stream of GPIC will help the NNPC transform into an integrated energy company with the production of 4,000Mw of power at strategic locations.

    He said all relevant stakeholders in the power sector are in alignment with the NNPC with the establishment of the GPIC.

     

  • Breaking:court nullifies Kano PDP guber primaries

    A Federal High Court presided over by Justice Lawis Alagoa on Monday nullified the primary election that produced Abba K. Yusuf as the gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the Saturday’s gubernatorial election in the state.

    The Judge ruled that Abba K. Yususf’s candidature is not recognized by law because no primary election was held to produce him.

    The Judge, however, ruled that the PDP should conduct a fresh primary to produce a candidate that can be recognized by law before Saturday’s election.

    However, Ibrahim El-Amin Little, a PDP gubernatorial aspirant had approached the Court, challenging the process that led to his emergence of Abba Yusuf as PDP gubernatorial candidate in Kano.

    His grouse was that the party denied him the right to contest the primary election, even as he brought his expression and nomination form.

    Llittle had prayed the court for the interpretation of whether the party could go ahead to field a candidate for the election in Kano state, without conducting primary election or not.

     

  • Fire kills family of 6 in Kano

    Tragedy struck in the wee hours of yesterday at Bawo road, Hausawa quarters, in Tarauni local government area of Kano State, when fire  burnt a family of six to death.

    The fire outbreak killed one Isaiah Jonathan, his wife, his three children, including a new born baby and the younger sister of his wife. According to an eyewitness, the fire incident started from the sitting room and prevented the deceased and his family members from coming out of the house.

    Narrating further how the incident occurred, the eyewitness said they were woken up when they heard the deceased calling for help. “When we heard some noise at the early hours, we thought robbers have visited us. But when we came out, we saw that fire was burning a part of the house and it was difficult to put out. We saw them trying to pull out the burglary proof. They couldn’t find ladder to get to their rescue,” he said.

    Confirming the incident, the Kano State Police spokesman, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said “at about 0325hrs, control room called and inform patrol team that there was a fire incident at link 39, Bawo rd, Hausawa. All the family of one Mr. Jonathan, male, his wife, three children and their maid, all burnt to ashes. The fire was put out with the help of the men of Kano fire service.”

     

  • Maternal health:Kano emerges 2018 MNCHW North-West champion

    Kano State has earned $8.1 million emerging the overall winner of the 2018 North-West Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week (MNCHW) programme.

    The feat followed the commitment of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s administration in Saving one Milion lives Programme on the platform of offering low-cost intervention to Pregnant Women and Children under the age of five years in the State.

    Dr. Ganduje disclosed this during the Flag-off of the MNCH 2019, held at Getso in Gwarzo Local Government Area of the state.

    Dr. Ganduje who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna stated that “during the last round of the exercise, over two million Children were supplemented with Vitamin A, while 1,180,760 Children were dewormed and thousands of women were given LLIN, Iron- Folate supplements and malaria prevention drugs respectively.

    ” Kano State Government which has been consistent in the implementation of all health programmes aimed at improving the lives of our people, has provided all necessary support to ensure this campaign is a success.

    ” This administration has placed the highest priority on saving the lives especially that of Women and Children through the provision of essential health services both at Primary and Secondary care levels and did not relent in taking holistic insight into the fundamental needs of our healthcare sector and came up with comprehensive action plan.”

    He assured that Kano State Government would strive and work harder in delivering more democratic dividends in housing, transportation, fly-over bridges, improving road network, agriculture, commerce and many other interventions that would improve standard of living and ensure development in the state.

    He emphasized the importance of the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week to the lives of Women and Children, maintaining that, “this week exercise would provide Vitamin A supplement for Children, Deworming of Children, immunization, Screening of Children Nutritional Status and Birth registration exercise among others.”

    On his part, the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented by the District Head of Tudun Wada, Dr. Bashir Ibrahim Muhammad Dankadai, expressed satisfaction on the effort made by Kano State Government and other development partners in promoting the lives of Women and Children in the State despite economic challenges.

    Also speaking, the State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso said the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Week is a week-long event during which low-cost interventions are offered to prevent women and Children under age of 5 with the aim of increasing coverage levels of some important preventive and curative health indicators that allow mothers and Children to thrive and develop.

    According to him, Kano State Government in collaboration with other developed partners had spent over N1 million in procuring the needed supplements to ensure the successful conduct of the MNCHW Programme across the 44 local government areas in the State.

    On the effort being made by the State to improve the health sector, Dr. Getso explained “The Present administration of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has renovated and equipped over 300 Hospitals with new working materials to ensure that people benefit more from its health revitalization agenda.

    ” Apart from this, Kano State Government has procured medicines worth billions of Naira and distributed to the hospitals across the State, provided free maternal care and free Child treatment in the State,” he added.

  • Ganduje congratulates Buhari on re-election

    Kano state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has joined well-meaning Nigerians in congratulating President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for overwhelmingly winning the presidential election.

    Ganduje attributed Buhari’s victory to the successes recorded in his administration which he described as one of the most successful in Nigeria’s democratic governance.

    The congratulatory message signed by the Governor indicated that “the re-election of President Buhari is the will of the people who are supporting his administration’s change agenda that has brought about transformation in all facets development in the country.”

    He said the victory of the APC should also be seen as victory for Nigerian democracy and collective progress of the nation.

    The Governor assured that “Kano, which produced the highest number of votes in the presidential election in the country will continue to support the lofty ideals for which the Buhari administration stand for.”

    Ganduje also said he looked forward to successful conduct of the forthcoming Governorship and state Assembly elections on March 9 and therefore called on the people of Kano to exercise their franchise by voting for the APC so that the state government can consolidate on achievements it has recorded so far.

  • PDP rejects results in Kano

    The leadership of the People’s Democratic Party PDP in Kano have rejected the presidential results compiled in Kano by INEC.
    The party agent at the collation Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, who is also the chairman of the party in the state expressed disgust with the way in which figures were inflated in the results.
    According to him “we cannot accept such inflated figures and that is our stand, so we will go back and analyse the issue to know the next line of action to take.”
    “As you can see the presiding officers complained of lack of use of card readers during the voting exercise of the presidential and national assembly elections in the state coupled with over-voting.
    Asked whether the PDP will institute a legal action over the narratives, Sulaiman said ” we shall look at the circumstances and provisions of the law and see what the law says so as to pursue our rights.”

  • Kano: Gaya, Jibrin retain senatorial seats

    Two incumbent Senators from Kano state have retained their seats following their victory in the Saturday’s National Assembly elections.

    The two Senators are: Sen. Barau Jibril-Maliya representing Kano North Senatorial district and Sen. Kabiru Gaya, who is representing Kano South Senatorial district.

    Announcing the results of National Assembly elections, the returning officer for Kano North Senatorial district, Prof. Ali Tijjani-Abdullahi said on Monday that the APC senatorial candidate, Barau Jibril-Maliya scored 286,419 votes to defeat the PDP candidate, Alhaji Ahmed Garba-Bichi, who polled 155, 638 votes.

    Similarly, the returning officer for Kano South Senatorial district, Prof. Ibrahim Barde of the Bayero University Kano declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Kabiru Gaya as the winner of the election in the Kano South Senatorial seat.

    Barde said Gaya secured 319,004 votes to defeat the PDP candidate, Alhaji Abdullahi Sani-Rogo who got 217,520 votes.

    Meanwhile, the collation of results for the Kano Central Senatorial zone is ongoing at the collation Centre.

  • APC wins two Senatorial Seats in Kano

    All Progressives Congress APC has won Kano North and South Senatorial Seats in Kano state.

    The Chairman Senate committee on works and (APC) candidate Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya beat Abdullahi Sani Togo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win Kano South Senatorial Ticket.

    Gaya polled 319,004 to defeat the PDP candidate who scored 217,520.

    In Kano North Senatorial, Senator Barau Jibrin of APC won with 286,419 to beat the PDP candidate Ahmed Garba Bichi who scored 155,638 votes.

    Meanwhile, the result of Kano Central Senatorial election is being awaited as collation is still in progress as at the time of filing the report.
