  • ‘Kano free of polio in 53 months’

Kano Commissioner of Health Dr. Kabiru Getso on Friday said the state has been free of Wild Polio Virus (WPV) outbreak for 53 months.

According to him, the state is participating in the January 2019 sub-national Outbreak Response (OBR) campaign owing to outbreak of polio in neighbouring Jigawa and Katsina states.

Getso, who spoke with newsmen, said the three-day campaign will kick-start on Sunday January 27.

He explained: “Kano is at risk of infection from its neighbouring states where many cases of circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio Virus (cVDPV) has been isolated because Kano has long stretch of borders with Jigawa and Katsina states.

“Kano has high population dynamics occasioned by high volume of commercial activities.

“Kano has busy markets with possibilities of sales of empty vaccine vials.

“Also, Kano has highly populated metropolitan Local Government Areas.

He further stated: “I want to emphasise that this campaign will involve administration of mOPV2 vaccine targeting all children aged 0—59 months in the 35 Local Government Areas.

“It is, therefore, important that parents and care-givers bring out all the eligible children to the vaccination posts earmarked for this campaign in their areas.”

“Our commitment and efforts in strengthening Routine Immunization over the last three years are yielding positive results.

“For two consecutive quarters now, Kano state has consistently emerged as the best improved state in the country in Routine Immunization service delivery.

  • EFCC, ICPC should investigate 2016 audit report – CSO

A civic organization, Paradigm Leadership Support Initiative (PLSI) on Wednesday called on the anti-graft agencies the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission to investigate the 2016 Audit Report.

The organization stated that N2.97 billion meant for 30 critical projects in the country was unaccounted for as stated in the report.

Executive Director of PLSI, Olusegun Elemo, stated these at the launch of its Independent Findings of priority projects captured in the 2016 audit report.

Elomo stated that the organization monitored 19 priority projects in 12 states captured under the report this year and found out that most of them have been abandoned.

According to him, ten out of the projects have been abandoned even when monies have been paid for them.

He noted that only one out of the 19 projects had been completed when PLSI visited the states this month.

The monitored states by PLSI include; Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Adamawa, Imo and Enugu.

Some of the abandoned projects include; construction of mini-water scheme phase two, contract for the construction of small earth dam, rehabilitation of two-township water supply schemes, improvement of Olode water supply scheme under the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority.

Others are construction of Weru bridge fencing of Okene water works among others which was supposed to be implemented by the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority.

Projects abandoned under the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing include the rehabilitation of Ikorodu road with about N112.8million unaccounted for, also the rehabilitation of 24km Akungba-Ikare-Omuo-Kabba road among others.

Elomo said: “We visited 12 states over the last six months and monitored 19 out of the 30 priority projects highlighted in this report. While one of the projects had been completed, two were not executed, 10 abandoned, three poorly implemented, another two currently ongoing and one now provided for in the 2018 Appropriation Act.

“The major issue for us is how procurement laws and financial regulations are flagrantly disregarded at the risk of public funds and the negative effect on Nigerians, many of which are in rural areas in terms of access to clean portable water, access roads, quality health facilities.

“A total of N2.97 billion is said to be unaccounted for by different contractors on these 30 projects and we are calling on the anti-corruption agencies to quickly investigate these cases in order to ensure deserved value for money is achieved.”

Also, Project Director, TrustAfrica, Chinedu Nwagu, called on the National Assembly to carry out a review of the 2016 report.

He said it is only when a review of the report is done and recommendations forwarded to the Executive arm of government that the anomalies found in the report could be corrected.

Nwagu said: “There is need for the National Assembly to do the needful by ensuring extensive review of the 2016 audit report of the federation. It is only when this is done and recommendations forwarded to the Executive Arm that these anomalies can be corrected.

“Parliament should equally make effort in sending the new Audit Service Commission Bill 2018 to the president for assent. The new law will go a long way in preventing such illegality from occurring again,” he said.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is a leader whose love for Nigeria Superceded any other presidential candidate from all the opposition parties contesting against him in the forthcoming presidential election, ”

Ganduje urged them to continue praying for the peaceful conduct of the general elections, emphasising that, “It is with your prayers that this government is able to achieve what we are witnessing now. While at the same time we have a leader who is focused and has the political will to deliver.”

As Ganduje’s tour entered its sixth day, he has covered 13 local governments areas, campaigning for Buhari with incessant urge, for the strong reason that Buhari loves Nigeria more than any other presidential candidates.

Governor’s unprecedented confidence in President Buhari, makes him to take more than half of the time he spends talking to the traditional leaders, when he visits them at their palaces, canvassing for unflinching support for Buhari.

Even on the podium, he urges people, to first see the reason why Buhari deserves second term, as he speaks with all sense of responsibility and commitment, governor Ganduje repeats the same message in all the local governments that,

“Our dear President Muhammadu Buhari has directed me to come and convey his message to you that, APC government at all levels brings succour to Nigerians. Our party will continue with the good work it started when given another chance.”

The tour is designed in such a way that, governor with his campaign train move around local governments under federal constituency arrangements, daily. So far he toured Doguwa/Tudunwada, Kunchi/Tsanyawa, Takai/Sumaila, Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya, Dambatta/Makoda and Karaye/Rogo federal constituencies.

In all the places he touches he says “Kano state promised to give President Muhammadu Buhari 5 million votes. We should strive and make sure that we give him what we promised when the election comes.”

“We should also make sure that we elect APC candidates as legislators, that will help him to continue with his developmental projects and programmes. He needs good legislators that will put heads together with him for the overall development of our dear nation,” Ganduje says.

He challenged that whoever is interested in a peaceful Nigeria with good leadership, that is focused and committed, should vote Buhari for the second term, into office, insisting that, “This people-oriented President is a leader we can all trust.”

While at the palace of the District Head of Dambatta, who is also the Sarkin Bai of Kano, and the Kingmaker of the Emirate, Alhaji Mukhtari Adnan, after urging all the District Heads and Imams to continue praying for Buhari’s victory in the coming election, Ganduje urged them to work hard and inform all their subjects to go and collect their permanent voters card.

In his remarks, the Sarkin Bai, commended the governor for developing the state and for the achievements recorded in all the sectors of the society, “We are also aware that, you are doing well in the area of human development. We appreciate what you are doing in the state.”

For this reason, he added “You deserve another term of four years. We are solidly behind your candidature. And we shall tell people to support you.”

He added that, people like Ganduje who respects people of all ages and social status “…need to be encouraged in their public responsibilities. Because supporting Governor Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for second term is a project that all should accept.”

All chairmen of the visiting local governments believe that governor Ganduje is a performing governor, whose vision and interest in the development of the state, takes him to higher level both politically and in governance.

Projects executed by his administration, ranging from road construction to renovation or upgrading of health facilities, among other things, are some of the many reasons why many people believe that, his (Ganduje) achievements are enough reasons for him to get re-elected even without him going round for campaigns.

No local government, that he goes without either commissioning completed projects or inspecting ongoing projects. In Makoda local government, the governor commissioned two health facilities. One in Makoda town and the other one in Chidari, that was renovated and fully equipped with modern health care equipment, at over N400 Million.

In Sumaila local government, it was not only the chairman of the local government, who attested to what the administration of Ganduje was able to do, the Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives) Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, commended the governor for an all-important Gani Bridge, hospital in Rimi town and other projects executed.

.In all places the governor visited, he urged people to make sure that they collect their permanent voters’ cards (PVCs) for their support to be realistic and meaningful. He then calls electorate to make sure that they vote for the APC at all levels of elective position.

Imam explained that the Trust Fund, established in collaboration with Community Health Research Initiative, CHRI, and Centre for Sustainable Development and Communications Initiative, CSDCI, was a financing mechanism to support the less privileged persons living with sickle cell.

She noted that the fund would cushion the soaring economic condition of parents of the sickle cell patients, especially in purchasing drugs and payment of screening and investigations.

Shemau Adam maintained that poor availability of resources to the public health facilities, welfare sectors and economic inflation are seriously hampering access to appropriate medical and social services.

  • Kano medical miracle

•Successful brain surgery is proof that, with necessary facilities, our doctors can do it

NIGERIAN  medical doctors practicing in the country have over the years demonstrated on several occasions that they rank among the best in the world and can effectively meet the health needs of the citizenry if only they had appropriate facilities, motivation and working environment. Thus, despite the much lamented dearth of up to date equipment and demoralising job conditions, several medical feats such as open heart surgeries, kidney transplant and separation of conjoined twins have been successfully performed by Nigerian medical specialists right here at home.

These outstanding accomplishments have been mostly performed in our foremost health institutions including the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LUTH), University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Nsukka and the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), Ile-Ife, all in the southern part of the country.

The news that five Nigerian neurosurgeons from Kano last week successfully performed the first brain surgery in the state within 48 hours is thus a landmark in the evolution of healthcare in Nigeria. It shows that there are indeed qualified health manpower across the country capable of carrying out delicate and sophisticated health procedures that wealthy Nigerians normally travel abroad to undergo if only they have the requisite equipment.

This feat was achieved at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital, Giginyu, Kano, and the team of five surgeons who performed the operation comprised of the consultant, Dr. Shuaibu Dambatta, Dr Atiku, Dr Musa, Dr Hassan and Dr Musbahu, all from Kano. The patient, Ali Iliyasu, hails from Dala Local Government in Kano State. Speaking on his condition, he said “I had been suffering from this problem for the past 26 years, when I had an accident. Since that time, my brain was not the same again. I and my family suffered a lot by going from one place to another, in search of effective medical attention and intervention to no avail. The last place we went gave me an appointment of 11 months after which a surgery would be conducted on me”.

The lead surgeon in the operation, Dr Dambatta spoke on the success of the operation stressing that “we were contacted within the shortest period of time and we accepted to conduct the surgery. As you can see, the patient is talking to you now in less than 24 hours after the surgery; you know it is a successful exercise. He goes to rest room on his feet, just within 24 hours after the surgery. We all thank Allah for this all-important breakthrough in this specialist hospital”.

This breakthrough underscores, once again, the need for government to invest in critical infrastructure for the delivery of social services to the people, which is the reason for the existence of the state in the first place. In this regard, it is noteworthy that the specialist hospital where the procedure was performed was constructed by the administration of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. During the commissioning of the facility by President Muhammadu Buhari, Ganduje had announced that it would not be run solely by government but through a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) arrangement and in accordance with global best practices.

The state government’s adherence to that promise apparently contributed significantly to the success of the brain surgery. In the words of Dr. Dambatta, “This development became possible through the good process followed by the state government in making the management of the hospital to be under PPP, which helps in no small measure to have the state-of-the art medical equipment that made the dream a reality”.

What can be described as a Kano medical miracle demonstrates once again that with adequate investment in health care, Nigeria cannot only substantially stem the outflow of foreign exchange by those seeking medical care abroad, the country can become itself a major destination for medical tourism, with positive economic benefits.

We congratulate the surgeons and supporting staff of the specialist hospital as well as the state government on this major achievement.
