  • Kano iron dealers, council split over market master plan

Business activities have been very low lately in Kofar Ruwa Iron and Rod Market, Kano State following the conflict between members of the iron dealers association (KRIRDA) and the authorities of Dala Local Government Council where the market is located.

The Nation gathered that trouble started when the Dala Council chairman built more lock-up shops inside the market, a decision which did not augur well with traders in the over 45-year-old market which has been serving not only customers from the North but also businessmen and rod dealers from neighbouring countries like Niger, Chad, Sudan and Cameroon.

KRIRDA  has called on Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to intervene in the dispute with Dala Local Government Area over plan to build additional shops in the already jam-packed rod market. Speaking to reporters on the issue, KRIRDA president, Chief Anayochukwu Ike described as improper, the unilateral decision of the Chairman, Dala Local Government Area to build lock-up shops in front of their shops.

According to him, embarking on such a project will not only disorganise the entire market, but will also hinder access to trailers bringing in their goods to the market, stressing that the frontage of their shops remains the only space they display iron and rods.

Chief Ike, who said members of his association pay all taxes and levies to the state and local government as at when due, lamented that erecting another structure within the market means getting them out of business.

“If there are plans to relocate us, they should come out clear and explain to us. There is no way we can remain in this market with those structures there, unless they have decided to get us out of business; may be, because they don’t like our face. We have been in this market for a very long time. We have maintained cordial relationship with the authorities of Dala Local Government.

“We have been generating revenue for the development of the Local Government and Kano state government. We now wonder why they want to stampede us out of business,” Chief stated.

According to him, after exhausting all possible means of negotiation, “while they remained adamant, we went to Court and got an injunction restraining the Council authorities and their representatives from erecting any structure within the market, but immediately the injunction expired, they started digging holes in front of our shops.

On Friday, 8 April, they came with Yandabas (area boys), armed with arrows and knives as they were digging foundation in front of our shops. That action generated unprecedented tension within the market and the entire state as many of us hurriedly locked our shops and ran for our dear life.”

Chief Ike lamented that despite several appeals by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG)  in charge of Zone One, Dala Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Suleiman Dan Isli  remained adamant and went ahead erecting illegal lockup shops in the market, blocking shops and offices.

He, however, appealed to Governor Ganduje and other stakeholders, as well as opinion leaders in Kano state to intervene and stop the erection of more structures in Kofar Ruwa rod market, “because if they go ahead to build that shop, they have crippled our markets. “Besides, we all know the dangers inherent in jam-packed markets.

We don’t sell Cray fish, what we sell are iron and rods, which are naturally packed in open space, now if you block that space, simply because you want to generate revenue, how and where do we then pack our goods; we are very much disturbed and therefore we are calling on Governor Ganduje to use his good office to save our business,” he appealed.

Also speaking on the matter,  Chief Alphonsus Ubaneche, member, Board of Trustees (BoT), Kofar Ruwa Iron and Rod Dealers Association, (KRIRDA), whose office is located on the affected Alphamic line speaks on the need for Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and other stakeholders to stop the chairman of Dala Local Council from altering the original master plan of Kofar Ruwa iron and rod market.

His words: “I am deeply disturbed and surprised over what is happening. I keep on wondering why Dala Local Government chairman is taking this action. I have been in this Kofar Ruwa market since 1987, that is over 29 years; and I am aware that this market has existed for the past 35 years.

  • Kano: APC suspends Chairman, Secretary

    Kano: APC suspends Chairman, Secretary

Following the face-off between Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the party chairman in the state, Umar Haruna Doguwa and the Organizing Secretary, Sanusi Suraju Kwankwaso have been suspended by the party on allegations of misconduct and anti-party activities.

Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas Sanusi, former Commissioner of Environment and currently Special Adviser to Governor Ganduje on Political Affairs has also been appointed as the Acting Chairman.

Briefing reporters at the Maiduguri Road headquarters of state chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) yesterday, Secretary of the party, Abbas Sani Abbas, also said that already, a seven-man Committee has been constituted to investigate the activities of the duo.

He named chairman of the Committee as Alhaji Haruna Ahmadu Danzago, Secretary, Alhaji Nuraddeen Zubair and five others who were given one week to investigate and submit their findings and as well recommend appropriate action against Doguwa and Kwankwaso.

Advancing reasons for the suspension, the party secretary said: “having received complaints and petitions from card-carrying members of our great party, the APC, about the case of misconduct  and abuse of office by the state party chairman, Haruna Umar Doguwa and the state Organizing Secretary, Sanusi Suraju Kwankwaso of which the former, after issuing out a press conference duly agreed upon by the party Working Committee and Elders Committee respectively, and he later betrayed the trust by making a unilateral statement that refuted the party’s position on the subject matter.

“In the same respect, the Organizing Secretary made various radio programmes which are injurious to the party, without seeking the permission of the party. Based on the above action, we therefore, suspend the party chairman, Haruna Umar and the Organizing Secretary, Sanusi Suraju Kwankwaso, from their various position and we hereby constitute a seven-disciplinary committee which was set up to investigate the matter and take proper disciplinary measure and we urge them to discharge their duty without hindrance.”

What triggered the face-off between Ganduje and Kwankwaso can be traced to the recent controversial condolence visit by Kwankwaso to Ganduje town to condole with the governor who recently lost his mother, Hajiya Fatima.

Kwankwaso was said to have used the occasion as a launch pad for his 2019 presidential ambition as his supporters were said to have been chanting anti-Ganduje slogan and also wielding dangerous weapons.

Doguwa who earlier held Press Conference, condemning Kwankwaso’s action later retracted from statement indicting Senator Kwankwaso of alleged indiscipline by sponsoring armed thugs to Ganduje town.

  • Re: Pilots now teachers in Kano

Re: Pilots now teachers in Kano

In an era when some states were lavishing their oil windfall on frivolities, the Kwankwasiyya administration in Kano spent its allocation judiciously. It is therefore surprising that a newspaper in its March 1, 2016 editorial declared the Kwankwasiyya administration’s 100 Pilot Scholarship Scheme as a programme embarked upon “to gain cheap political point”. The paper could have reached out to understand the rationale behind such a policy, but it did otherwise.

The Kwankwasiyya administration should be praised for its achievements, more so in a country, where political office holders treasury with reckless abandon. Of particular note, are its achievements in the education sector, within a four-year span.

Between 2011 and May 2015, the Kwankwasiyya administration focused on education, providing free lunch and two sets of uniforms for new intakes, in primary schools, and constructed Kwankwasiyya classrooms that are still standing. Teachers were trained and retrained; salaries and allowances were paid by the 25th of every month. These initiatives, among other, mobilised parents to enroll more children resulting in a leap in enrollment figures from one million in 2011 to over three million in 2014.

Secondary school education also received its fair share of overhaul as over 230 secondary schools were established, including 47 technical colleges and 44 schools for Islamic studies spread across each of the 44 local governments. The government also recruited teachers, giving priority to their training and retraining in order to boost pupils’ performance in WAEC and NECO.

To enhance tertiary education, it established the North West University in 2012 in addition to the first state University of Science and Technology Wudil that was established in Kwankwasiyya’s first tenure in 2001. Twenty-six capacity building and manpower development institutes were also established. The administration sponsored Kano State indigenes to study in other Nigerian private universities (412 in Al-kalam University in Katsina State; 250 in Igbinedion University, Edo State; 300 in Bells University and 200 in Crescent University, both Ogun State and 25 in ABTI University, Adamawa State). Besides, there was another programme for sponsoring students to state and federal Universities. All these were done for a reason – to empower the youth and take them off the streets so that they could be useful to themselves and the society in future.

The masterstroke of the Kwankwaso administration is its sponsorship of over 2600 Kano State indigenes to study in some universities in 14 countries to sharpen their skills.

Among them are 400 secondary school graduates sponsored to study medical science courses. 250 of them are young women being trained as medical doctors.  Furthermore, the administration established two Schools of Nursing and Midwifery in Madobi and Gezawa, and three other health-related institutions. The administration also sponsored 50 qualified Nurses to study B.sc Nursing Education in Egypt. The students were expected to return and teach in health-related institutions.

The administration did all this because of its resolve to make Kano and its indigenes better. So, how can anybody think that the 100 Pilots project was ill-conceived or poorly thought out?

The Kano State Pilots project was initiated with the best of intentions. A lot was put into it before it came to fruition. Initially, when the scheme came up, 100 secondary school pupils were short listed as the best candidates for the scholarship scheme. But the government insisted on university graduates, from other fields. The rationale behind the scheme is not for the beneficiaries to return home to work. Rather, it was to expose and give them the opportunity to access world class education; build their capacities and broaden their contacts. It was a long time plan so that in future, Kano would have specialists in every sector, with Nigeria, hopefully, sourcing for its manpower from the ancient state. Therefore, signing a bond with the beneficiaries of the Kwankwasiyya Pilot Scheme does not arise, as the aim was not to have the beneficiaries back in Kano to practice as pilots. Their training and that of others in similar schemes was to empower Kano State indigenes to become employable internationally, to be sought after, from every nation of the world. Many of these beneficiaries have got jobs abroad; some have been given foreign scholarships to pursue Ph.Ds. These scholarship schemes were executed without loan from any financial institution or development agency locally or internationally.

Remarkably, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso still gives attention to matters central to Kano development as evident in his chairmanship of  the Senate Adhoc Committee on Aviation where he discovered that there is a dearth of trained and experienced manpower in the industry. During this assignment, he made a case for the100 Kano pilots and other young pilots and operational personnel. He recommended a review of the required flying hours for new pilots alongside other stringent regulations hindering young aviation personnel’s progress.

Kwankwaso also intervened in the case of the 25 marine engineering students of Kano State who returned to Nigeria after completing their Higher National Diploma in South Shields New Castle, United Kingdom, but could not proceed for sea time training, for over nine months. Through his efforts, the students have now gone for their sea time training.
