Fake drug: NSA, NAFDAC launch biggest operation against fake drugs in Onitsha, Idumota, Kano, Yaba

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ridadu, has partnered with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to combat the growing threat of fake, falsified, and substandard medicines.

NAFDAC DG, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the collaboration’s necessity, citing its national security implications and the critical need for military support to dismantle major fake drug distribution networks in Kano, Idumota, Yaba, and Onitsha simultaneously.

She noted that the initiative has also brought in the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in addition to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to strengthen coordination in the agency’s multi-pronged fight against fake drugs.

Speaking on an Arise TV program Monday night, Adeyeye reaffirmed her stance on the death penalty for fake drug peddlers while emphasizing the agency’s unwavering commitment to eradicating fake and substandard medicines in Nigeria.

She outlined the agency’s multi-faceted approach, which includes stringent regulatory measures, technological interventions, and strategic collaborations with key government agencies.

According to her, NAFDAC’s largest-ever nationwide crackdown on falsified drugs in open markets necessitates a partnership with the NSA for the deployment of security forces to strengthen enforcement.

“This is the biggest operation in NAFDAC’s history because we are dealing with a national security issue.

The crackdown is happening simultaneously in those open markets and it is the first time NAFDAC is carrying out such massive operations since it was established,” the DG said.

Emphasizing the devastating impact of fake drugs, particularly on children, she highlighted a recent case where four different pediatric medicines purchased in Kano were found to contain no active ingredients.

“A child cannot complain if a drug is not working. If a medicine given to a child results in death, then the perpetrators deserve the stiffest punishment,” she declared, insisting that the death penalty for drug peddlers whose actions result in loss of life is a strong deterrent and a necessary starting point in the fight against counterfeit medicines.

Addressing concerns about whether severe punishment acts as an effective deterrent, the DG acknowledged that while criminal activities such as kidnapping and banditry persist despite the death penalty, stringent measures remain a critical part of the solution.

“When I joined NAFDAC, the prevalence of substandard medicines was about 17%, but over the last four years, we have brought it down to about 12-13%. This shows that our efforts are making an impact,” she noted.

The agency has also embraced technology to enhance drug traceability, through the GS1 barcoding system, NAFDAC can now monitor the movement of drugs, ensuring that only genuine products reach the market, the DG said.

According to her, the system was effectively used to track vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic and is now being expanded to cover pediatric and maternal healthcare products.

Furthermore, she said NAFDAC has strengthened its oversight of imported medicines through pre-shipment testing, revealing that over 180 substandard products have been blocked from entering Nigeria.

“We physically inspect manufacturing sites abroad and ensure that only approved products enter the country. If any discrepancies are found, we blacklist and deregister the manufacturers,” she explained.

On the issue of porous borders, which enable the influx of counterfeit medicines, NAFDAC has signed MOUs with the NCS and NDLEA to enhance coordination and enforcement.

“We are working more closely than ever because bad drugs affect everyone, including us and our families,” the DG said.

While the push for the death penalty for drug offenders remains controversial, with critics citing concerns about wrongful convictions and international human rights obligations, the NAFDAC DG maintained that penalties for drug-related offences must be significantly tougher.

“A fine of 250,000 Naira or five years in prison for an offence that could result in mass casualties is weak. If not death penalty, then life imprisonment should be considered to serve as a deterrent.

“NAFDAC’s intensified efforts, combined with technological innovations and strategic partnerships, reflect a resolute determination to combat the menace of fake drugs in Nigeria.

“As the fight continues, we remain steadfast in this mission to protect public health and ensure that every medicine on the market meets the highest safety and quality standards,” she argued.

Kano signs MoU with FMBN, reintegrates into housing scheme

Kano state government on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) to reintegrate into the national housing scheme.

The Managing Director of FMBN, Shehu Usman Osidi, signed for the bank, while the Head of Service (HoS), Abdullahi Musa, stood in for the state government.

Kano was an active participant in the National Housing Scheme until its exit in 2002, which had far-reaching implications, particularly on civil servants who were deprived of affordable mortgage financing opportunities, The Nation learnt.

Speaking after the event which took place at the office of the Head of Service, Musa disclosed it was Governor Abba Yusuf, in his visionary leadership, who saw reasons to get the state’s civil servants back into the national housing fund scheme for the benefits it has to the workers.

He said the initiative underscores the administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the welfare and wellbeing of the state’s dedicated civil servants.

He discloses that over the years, after exiting from the scheme, the housing deficit among the workforce continued to widen, necessitating a strategic intervention to integrate them into the scheme.

“Housing remains a fundamental component of workers’ welfare. Access to decent and affordable accommodation directly impacts productivity, financial security and overall well-being of the worker.

“Recognising these imperatives, Kano State Government, under the leadership of Engr Abba Yusuf, has deemed it necessary to reintegrate into the National Housing Scheme to bridge the existing housing gap and provide civil servants with home ownership opportunities.

“This MOU will give the civil servants access to affordable mortgage financing, enabling civil servants to own homes with flexible repayment plans, enhancing financial security so they have structured home ownership rather than reliance on rental housing,” he said.

Musa added that the reintegration into the scheme will increase motivation and commitment among workers, thereby improving productivity in the state workforce.

He pledged that the state government will remain resolute in ensuring the full implementation of the MOU, by working closely with the FMBN and all relevant agencies to guarantee seamless execution of the scheme.

MD of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Shehu Osidi, stated that since 2002, the state’s non-participation meant that thousands of civil servants in Kano State have been unable to access affordable housing loans under the NHF.

“Today, that era comes to an end, and a new chapter of possibilities begins.

Through this agreement, Kano State workers will now be eligible

to enjoy the various housing finance products offered by FMBN,” he said.

Osidi, who commended the leadership of labour unions in the state for facilitating the MoU, said the Kano civil servants will now enjoy NHF Mortgage loans, individual construction loans (that allow individuals to build their houses directly), home renovation loans, and other innovative housing solutions tailored to meet their needs.

This would be the third incident in the space of three months involving a Max Airplane.

Though the 53 passengers on board were evacuated unhurt, the aircraft was temporarily shut before the runway was reopened by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) by 8:00 am on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has also initiated an investigation into the occurrence.

However, the regulatory authority, the NCAA, in a statement confirming the incident said it will provide the required support to the NSIB in this regard.

Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu in a statement said, “It must be stated that the specific cause(s) of this incident can only be established after the NSIB has conducted its investigation.”

He added, “It is instructive to note that the NCAA had commenced organizational risk profiles for each scheduled operator, including Max Air, which is nearing its conclusion.

“However, as a result of this incident, Max Air is suspending its domestic flight operations for three months with effect from midnight, 31st January 2025, to allow for an internal appraisal of its operations by its management.”

“The resumption of Max Air’s domestic flight operations will be predicated on the satisfactory completion of this audit.

CISLAC condemns attack on Kano PCACC boss

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has condemned the recent arrest and subsequent release of Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC), by officers of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit.

Executive Director, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, in a statement released on Monday, described the incident as a clear case of “corruption fighting back.”

Rafsanjani warned that such developments undermined the country’s collective anti-corruption efforts and eroded public trust, urging the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun, to resist political manipulations.

“The Inspector General of Police must not allow his office to be used by desperate politicians to undermine anti-corruption efforts or shield powerful individuals from legitimate investigations. Actions like these not only tarnish the reputation of the police force but also erode public confidence in the impartiality of state institutions,” said Rafsanjani.

According to the CISLAC boss, the attack on the Kano PCACC boss appeared to be connected to the commission’s ongoing investigations into a high-profile case involving properties allegedly linked to a prominent national figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Rimingado was reportedly detained on Friday evening over the seizure of properties believed to be proceeds of crime.

The investigation and prosecution of the former Managing Director of the Kano Agricultural Supply Company were carried out by the Kano Anti-Graft Agency in accordance with its enabling law and a court order.

Rimingado was released on bail later that night but was asked to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday for further questioning.

But the police denied arresting Rimingado, insisting that he was only invited over a petition against him.

Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi in a statement Monday evening said his invitation on Friday was in line with standard investigative protocols, adding that he was invited to engage with police officials as part of due process in addressing the matter.

“Given his role as a public servant and a respected individual within society, it is expected of Mr Muhuyi to cooperate with the police to ensure a proper investigation is carried out, rather than seeking to create media attention.

“Any assertions indicating that Mr Magaji was arrested are unfounded and misleading. We urge the media and general public to avoid disseminating misinformation that may cause unnecessary alarm or confusion.

“The Force remains committed to upholding the rule of law and following due process in all investigations,” said Adejobi.

UNICEF: Schools in Kano, Jigawa, Katsina failing to provide quality education for children

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has raised concerns about the poor quality of education for children in northern Nigeria, in addition to the high number of Out of School Children (OOSC) in the region.

Rahama Rihood Mohammed Farah, Chief of UNICEF Field Office Kano, made the statement at a press conference marking this year’s International Day of Education (IDE) at Bon Hotel in Kano on Friday.

UNICEF pointed out that the northwest region has the second-highest rates of children out of school, and the situation is worsened in Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states, where even children who are enrolled in school are facing poor learning outcomes.

“There are currently about 10.2 million children at the primary level are out of school in Nigeria, 16 per cent of them are from Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states, according to MICS 2021.

“Close to one million children are out of school in Kano state( 989,234); a total of 337,861 out of school children are in Jigawa, while Katsina state has 536,112 out of school children,” Farah said, adding that 32% of primary school going age children were out of school in Kano state.

He said: “While the spectre of Out of School Children (OOSC) is a major concern, the challenge is that even those children who have the opportunity  to be enrolled in school are not having quality education.

“Only 1 out of 4 children in Nigeria, aged 7-14 years can read and understand a simple sentence or solve basic arithmetic, according to the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS 2021) report.

“Across Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states, this challenge is staggering: Tests conducted by the Federal Ministry of Education in 2022 found that Foundational Learning rates stand at 11 per cent or lower in the three states of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina.

“For instance, only 2% of primary school learners in Jigawa state have foundational reading skills while less than 1% have numeracy skills.

“Although Kano figures appear better at 9.6% for reading proficiency, and 11.2% for numeracy, these figures are way lower than the national averages of 26% per cent for Reading proficiency and 25% for Numeracy respectively.”

The theme for the 2025 International Day of Education was given as: “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

UNICEF said the 2025 IDE conference was organised to leverage the advocacy moment of the IDE to highlight the significance of education and its role in fostering a well-informed, inclusive, and peaceful society.

Farah mentioned inadequate funding of the education sector, dissruptive impact of climate change on learning as other challenges confronting education in the country, particularly in the north.

He said UNICEF was supporting basic education in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states through cash transfers, tree planting campaigns, enrollment drives, supply of learning materials, building of schools and improvement of teachers’ capacities among other interventions.

  • Kwankwaso, Ganduje must reconcile in Kano’s interest-Kofa

Kwankwaso, Ganduje must reconcile in Kano’s interest-Kofa

Member representing Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency, Kano, Dr Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, has sued for peace and immediate reconciliation between the National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Rabiu Kwankwaso and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Umar Ganduje.

Kofa, who chairs the House Committee on Housing and Habitat, on Thursday described the feud between Kwankwaso and Ganduje as a setback to Kano State.

He spoke on Freedom Radio, which was monitored by The Nation saying he is leading a crusade to force the two men to mend fences.

According to him, the reconciliation has nothing to do with their political affiliations. “They may remain in their party platforms which they represent, they should however see themselves as brothers,” he said.

He charged all well-meaning citizens of Kano to join hands together in reconciling the two political leaders for the betterment of the state.

Kofa said: “The two political leaders and long-time friends have excelled in their political careers. Kwankwaso started in the State Civil Service and later became Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, before becoming Kano governor, the minister, senator and Ambassador.

“Ganduje also a civil servant, became Director in FCT, Commissioner, Deputy Governor under Kwankwaso and Executive Secretary before serving the state as Governor and now APC National Chairman.

“Not everybody will be chosen by God to hold these offices. I think they have been blessed in their special ways by God.

“Now, whoever is aware of what is happening in Kano knows that the genesis will not be unconnected to the lingering feud between Kwankwaso and Ganduje.

“Everybody knows we are all NNPP and disciples of Senator Kwankwaso and his movement Kwankwasiyya. But It is an obligation upon some of us to force a reconciliation between the duo.

“Whether they like it or not, the issue of politics is something different, it is their choice but as Muslims we have a duty to do the right thing by reconciling them.

“They were friends for a long time, and they started good things together but what is happening between them is sad and painful. This is not a time to open old wounds but a time to embrace a future of peace, unity, tranquility, progress and development.

“We are already working hard towards that but I am calling on all of us that believe in this reconciliation efforts to come together and make it a reality.

“Let us see Kwankwaso attending the wedding of Ganduje’s daughter and Ganduje attending the wedding of Kwankwaso’s son. They should stand for each other in times of happiness and sadness. Forget about seeing them in the same political party, that’s their choice.

“I don’t have anything personal on this but it is the right thing for them and the state.

“For those who don’t want to see a reconciliation between Kwankwaso and Ganduje, may God touch them to see reasons.”
