  • Kano/Jigawa customs impounds N100m foreign rice

    The Kano/Jigawa Customs Command on Saturday in Kano impounded over 3,000n bags of foreign rice and some assorted contraband, valued at over N100 million.

    Briefing reporters at the Command’s headquarters in Bompai, Kano, the Comptroller Nasir Ahmed, said the goods were intercepted at various border towns within Jigawa axis.

    He attributed the success; so far achieved to the collaboration, with the Customs Intelligent Unit (CIU), the headquarters, Information Patrol Team (IPT), strike force, Federal operations and other relevant units of the service, because we are not competing among ourselves, but rather working together to stop smuggling.

    Ahmed warned that ”We want to tell the smugglers to have a rethink and look the other way for a new business, as 2019 would be no smuggling year for their nefarious activities.

    Also, he urged the youths against availing themselves to be used as agents, of conveying contraband goods into the country, adding that in most cases, the youth engaged in the act, unaware of the contents in the parcel.

    He however, warned the youths to desist from such businesses, which has led to the rise of drug abuse, as well as the proliferation of illegal arms in the country, advising that agriculture should rather be embraced and encouraged, among the youth.

    ”We must do everything possible to save our country, as I do not want to run to Niger, neither can Niger contains Nigerians.”

    While disclosing that the Command has impounded not less than 33 vehicles since January this year, used for smuggling foreign rice, he added that other assorted vehicles intercepted by the Command, are awaiting the owners to come forward and tender their relevant documents.

    According to him, the Command was able to generate N14.7 billion as revenue, adding that, out of 256 seizures made in 2018,over 18,816 bags of foreign rice was impounded, with a Duty paid value,(DPV),of N636,689,397.00K was collected.

  • Customs Impounds N7m worth of Rice, Macaroni, arrests Two In Kano

    The Kano/Jigawa Customs Command, impounded over 300 bags of smuggled foreign rice and macaroni, valued at N7 million.

    The Comptroller of the Command, Yusuf Abba-Kassim, who spoke to reporters over the seizure, said the two suspects were arrested in connection with the smuggled items.

    According to him, 10 vehicles which conveyed the smuggled items were also impounded by his men at Babura village, a border town between Kano and Jigawa.

    Also, Abba Kassim said that the rice were loaded in Babura, a border town between Jigawa and Kano, in five Golf car with the intention of smuggling into the country.

    He said, “I am here to showcase to you the suppression of smugglers in Kano/Jigawa Command; and the arrest of those foreign items were carried out within three days and as such, we are facing daunting challenges as the smugglers are now growing wild in their tactics to outsmart us.”

    He added the two suspects arrested will be prosecuted in the court of law.

    The Kano/Jigawa Customs Command Tuesday impounded over 500 bags of foreign rice and 48 cartons of controlled drugs known Tramadol hydrochloride tablets valued at over N30 million.

    Speaking to Reporters at the Command’s headquarters, the Comptroller, Mr. Yusuf Abba-Kassim Kassim who was flanked by Deputy Comptroller coordinating Jigawa axis, Mohammed Abubakar, said the drugs were impounded at an abandoned area and covered with millet tucks.

    According to him, the seizure followed a tip-off by good members the community that there was a suspicious items abandoned along Galadi/Burnawa route of Jigawa state.

    He added that, “acting on the information, our men were immediately drafted to the area where over 48 cartons of controlled drugs identified as tramadol were abandoned and covered with millet tucks.”

    The Comptroller further urged Nigerians to always provide useful information on the illegal activities of smugglers and criminals who are hell-bent in ruining the economy and the heath of Nigerians.

    “However, no arrest was made as the drugs were recovered in secluded place where the owners abandoned them apparently avoiding arrest. We shall soon hand it over to the appropriate authorities,” he added.

    Speaking on the intercepted bags of rice, the Comptroller said his men also acted on a tip off when two trucks loaded the contraband goods and concealed them with sacks of beans.

    “The two trucks carrying foreign rice that were concealed in sacks of beans were intercepted along Kano/Zaria road based on tip off.

    “The foreign rice might have found its way into the country through illegal routes with a plan to go further into the southern part of the country.

    “Based on information, our trailed the trucks and impounded the vehicles fully loaded with the banned commodity,” he stated.

    Kano/Jigawa Customs Command, partner border communities to check smuggling

    The Kano/Jigawa Customs Command  is seeking a closer relationship with the people living in border areas to check smuggling.

    Mr Martins Abutu, the Controller of the Command said this in an interview with journalists on Monday in Dutse.
    He said that there was the need to otherwise engage youths who lived around the border areas who were engaged in smuggling with guns.

    “Rather, we should look for an alternative and better jobs for them”.

    The controller said it was because of this that the command was seeking partnership with Jigawa State Government to engage youths in skills acquisition like carpentry, tailoring and metal works, among others.

    Abutu also solicited the support of traditional rulers, stakeholders and other security agencies around the border areas to help them in that regard.

    He said that the command, in collaboration with the state government and other security agencies, recently organised a stakeholders meeting in Dutse on ways to eradicate smuggling and other crimes around the border zones.

    The Kano/Jigawa  Customs Command Tuesday impounded assorted contraband goods, valued at N20millon.

    The Comptroller of the Kano/Jigawa Command, Mr Mathias Onoja Abutu, said the seized goods were discovered in a bush, where the goods were stored in a warehouse in Malam Madori town, close to Maigatari, a border town to Niger Republic.

    Abutu, who described the Malam Madori area as a volatile place, stressed that it has been difficult for his officers to make seizures, due to the uncompromising attitude of the villagers.

    According to him, the Command have been able to make this big haul, due to the unrelenting efforts of his field officers, who were poised to rid Kano and Jigawa of smugglers.

    Assorted contraband goods impounded by Kano -Jigawa    Customs Command

    ”We have been making a lot of seizures, but this is a very spectacular one, because apart from the volume of the goods, which is involved, it was a very difficult task.

    ”My officers went through hell to be able to make these seizure work out. The goods were discovered in a Warehouse in an uncompleted and abandoned building somewhere near Maigatari,  Malam Madori axis, a border between Jigawa and Niger Republic.

    ”It is under the jurisdiction of the Kano/Jigawa Command. My officers were able to bring the goods with the help and support of Operation Salama, that is the Army operations in Jigawa State and with the assistance of the police.

    ”The area is very volatile, as I have always mentioned to people that care to listen, that that area is a very volatile area and it’s been difficult making seizures in that area.

    ” Any time we make seizures, it’s either there is one incident or the other, even before then, our officers had cause to impound a vehicle with contraband goods, but  the vehicle had an accident and before my officers could mobilize to convey the goods, the villagers came out en-masse and looted the goods.

    It was impossible for us to recover the goods seized. This time round, we have been able to make this big haul, which you have seen and I say you people should know about it.”

    Among the items seized are, 680 cartons of Eva Soap, 367 cartons of Balman suitcases, 80 bales of second hand clothes and 20 cartons of Macroni, with the inscription,: ”OBA GOLD, valued at N20 million” .
