Kanu tips Mikel, Moses as Africa’s best

Olympic gold medal winner, Nwankwo Kanu has tipped Chelsea and Super Eagles midfielder, John Obi Mikel, to win the 2013 CAF African Player of the Year award.

Kanu was the last Nigerian to win the award, back in 1999, and he insists that Mikel, and teammate Victor Moses, had done enough to return the plaque to Nigeria 14 years on.

The former Inter Milan and Arsenal striker said that for him, Mikel should win it this year, or Victor Moses. He further emphasised that both had a great Nations Cup and then won the Europa League with their club.

He also pointed at the performances of Mikel at the FIFA Confederations Cup, where the former FIFA U-20 and Olympics silver winner was simply outstanding, as further yardsticks for the argument.

Kanu, who turned 37 on August 1, was a winner in 1996 and 1999. The closest any Nigerian has come since then was Austin Okocha in 2004, and the former captain says Nigerian players must do more to earn respect.

    MANDELA DAY: Kanu goes spiritual

•Calls on all to love and not hate

As the world prepares to observe Nelson Mandela’s International Day and birthday tomorrow, former Super Eagles Captain Nwankwo Kanu has emphasised the need for all and sundry to jettison the spirit of hate and embrace love, so that the world can be a better place for all to live.

Kanu who over the years has touched the lives of many through his Heart Foundation, equally encouraged whoever cares to listen not to ignore an opportunity to extend hand of assistance to those in need.

The former Arsenal, West Brom and Portsmouth striker in what could pass for a timely tweet Tuesday said “Remember 18th july is Mandela day pls make sure you do something good in someone’s life. Help one another. Love not hate”

Mandela Day is an annual international day in honour of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each 18th July.

The day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first UN Mandela Day held on 18 July 2010. However, other groups began celebrating Mandela Day on 18 July 2009.

On 27 April 2009, the 46664 concerts and the Nelson Mandela Foundation invited the global community to join them in support of an official Mandela Day. It is not meant as a public holiday, but as a day to honour the legacy of the former South African President, and his values, through volunteering and community service.

One of the emphases of the day is a global recognition that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact.

  • Kanu tips son as successor

    Kanu tips son as successor

TOMORROW, May 27, kids in Nigeria and in different parts of the world will be honoured in line with the World Conference for the well-being of children’s declaration in 1925 and one of the best players of this generation, Nwankwo Kanu (OON), has fittingly tipped his son as his successor.

Kanu is Nigeria’s most-decorated player and one of the few players to have won the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, UEFA Cup and an Olympic Gold Medal. Time and again, comparison of Kanu who ended his international career following Nigeria’s exit from the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with any budding talent is inevitable. But the UNICEF Ambassador has sensationally told The Nation Sport & Style that his cute first son, Sean Chukwudi, who incidentally shot into instant fame years back with an appearance in that famous Peak Milk advert , succeed him.

“I have two boys and a girl in the house now,” Kanu, fondly called Papillo, told The Nation Sport & Style. “The first one is Sean Chukwudi Kanu and he’s going to eight.

“He’s the one that did the Peak advertisement with me and he likes and is very passionate about football.”

Of course, there is no doubt that Sean is a special boy dear to the heart of the two-time African Footballer of the Year and he reckons that it won’t be long before the lad starts hugging the headlines.

“Sean really likes football and I would state right from the day he could kick anything,” offered Kanu who was adjudged 13th in the Arsenal’s Greatest 50 Players poll in 2008, “he sleeps and eats football and whenever a football match is on, he would never leave the room.

“Now he understands the basics of the game and whenever he is watching a game he knows when a player ought to pass the ball to another player or go for goal.

“These are not things that l taught him but this is inborn; sometimes he would just say ‘daddy, why did he kick the ball instead of passing it.

“The good thing about him is that wherever he goes, he becomes a star because people recognise him as the boy that did the Peak advert with me. Instead of playing with kids of his age bracket when he turned seven, he was playing with those in the eight and nine bracket of ages.

“We went to Bradford to check out their academy but after looking at him, they instantly asked him to come back and he has since been training with the Watford Academy. So, we have to keep watching and guiding him because he’s a bit special,” he noted while speaking on the tricky topic of his likely successor.

“You see, in life we tend to come and go and it is whoever made his mark that stays in the memory of the people forever,” Kanu said in apt reference to the Shakespearean famous saying that ‘all the world is a stage and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances.’“Frankly, there is only one Nwankwo Kanu; so the question of whether there is a successor now is out of the equation and that applies to every hero that has come and gone.

“So somebody could play like Nwankwo Kanu yet he is not Nwankwo Kanu. You must know where you are coming from and where you are going and I think the next Nwankwo Kanu would come from the family of Nwankwo Kanu.

“I think it must come from the Kanu’s family, so we pray that anytime soon somebody will come from the Kanu family that would be a star like Nwankwo or even bigger and he could be Sean.”

Should the young Sean fulfil such expectorations, he would be following on the heels of players who rode on the crest of their fathers to become soccer stars.

Notable combination of a famous football star and his boy include Paolo and Cesare Maldini who at different times played for and captained giant Italian club, AC Milan. Most recently, there is Zinedine and Enzo Zidane and Kanu has enthused that he’s spending quality time with his broods for them to become champions.

“It is always good to know your family inside out,” said the husband of the delectable Amarachi. “What l mean is that you have to spend quality time with them, play with them, not only that, talk to them and teach them and train them.

“Some parents answer daddy but they don’t even know where their children’s school or even bother to take them to church for them to know God. All these things are basics and you and your wife must teach them all these. My wife does this well and when l am around l do same.

“For example, they must know how to clean their room and tidy their bed. Make sure that they pray before going to bed and when they wake up every day. Then you have to play with them so that they know that you are the best friend they could ever have in the world.

“Though it makes it pretty difficult when you are leaving the house and they are all crying for you not to go, you have to go because you have other things to cater for.

“Iyang Onyekachi, my second son, is very strong one while Sean is the quiet type. Even at his age he is matured, but Iyang is the strong one. He is everywhere and I think ‘bundle of energy’ should be his middle name. He keeps running and jumping everywhere. You can see the energy in him and he is really, really strong. He likes football too and he is going to six.

“My daughter, Amarachi, was born in Orlando, Florida and she is one year old – she clocked one on January 18, 2013.”

Kanu reminisced on his exciting career and has pointedly told The Nation Sport & Style his preferred jersey number in spite of wearing different ones at Ajax (9); Arsenal (25); Portsmouth (27); Inter Milan (11) and Super Eagles (4).

“I think I was comfortable wearing jersey number 4,” he said as a matter of fact. “My older brother who was somebody l looked up to wore number 4. Big Boss Keshi, one of my idols, also wore number 4 and if you check this number if you are not intelligent and smart you cannot wear it.

“If l have a player wearing 4 and he is not intelligent I will take the shirt from him and give it to another person. Number 10 is meant for super stars and it is the choice of everybody but not everyone can get it. So if you want to be a super star you go for number 10.

“I wasn’t a super star when I started but God made me a superstar eventually. For me number 4 is my choice because my big brother was wearing it and he was somebody l wanted to be like.

“He is even the one that was originally nicknamed Papillo. Keshi also made me to like the number because he is a leader and showed that quality in the Super Eagles and l wanted to be like him too. So it was number 4 that was my preferred choice.”

Kanu would forever be remembered as the guy that led Nigeria to the historic Africa’s first soccer gold medal at the Atlanta’96 Olympics and he has stated again that the experience is unforgettable.

He said: “I remember nobody believed in us. Even in the qualifiers there was no much noise about the team. We were not given much chance but we believed in ourselves. Football is all about faith and believing in your ability and that is exactly what we did.

“But the match against Brazil and Argentina were the highpoints of the tournament. Brazil was the team that the whole world was looking up to and tipped to win. They were called the Dream Team because they had many superstars in the team.

“In our first game they beat us 1-0 but we still qualified with them. When we had the opportunity to play them again we were not given any chance but when we entered the field, we just felt that it was going to be different because we had played them before and there was really nothing special about the team.

“But before you know it, Nigeria was 2-0 down and then 3-1 and they thought it was all over. But for us, we knew it was not over. We got the second goal and pushed on for the equaliser and eventually the magic had to happen and it was Kanu Nwankwo. So, immediately l got the ball, l had but a split second to decide what to do with the ball.

“I knew quite well what l could do with the ball because l am talented, but l always pray to be able to do them at the right time. That is why l always tell the younger ones that when you are playing for your country you have to know that the whole country is resting on your shoulders and you have to give all you have in order not to let the whole country down.

“That Kanu’s name has become a household name is because l have done something special for my country. So whenever you are filing out for the national team, pray that God would give you the grace to perform and I really thank God that I had so many magical moments in my career.”

Kanu warns: Eagles must learn from mistake

Says Harambee Stars are still beatable

Former Super Eagles captain, Nwankwo Kanu, has charged members of the Eagles squad to put behind Saturday’s 1-1 with Kenya’s Harambee Stars and learn from their mistakes in the remaining matches of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

The two-time former African Footballer of the Year also stressed that Nigeria can still hold their own against Kenyans in the reverse fixture of the 2014 World Cup qualifying match in Nairobi later in the year.

Speaking with SportingLife at the U.J.Esuene Stadium, Calabar

“Why not if they can come here and get one point, the Eagles can still go to Nairobi and surprise them and get the three points,” Kanu said.

The former African Footballer of the Year will not be drawn into controversy on whether Eagles forward Brown Ideye missed the partnership of Emmanuel Emenike during the cracker, he said: “I don’t know about that because I’m not a coach.

“But all the same like I said, their match plan especially in the first half didn’t click and the coach knows it but sometimes in life even in football, the way you want it is not the way it comes. As you can see the goal they scored is from a free kick it is not like they worked it out and they made it difficult for us because they had a game plan of going back all the 11 players once they lose the ball and it made it difficult for the boys to give the through pass and open them up but, they have to go back, and learn from our mistakes.”

  • Fashola, Kanu, Opadokun, others seek better deal for citizens

Rights activists and members of civil society groups have inaugurated the 2013 Black History Month in Nigeria, at the Freedom Park, Lagos.

The Chairman of the occasion, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, extolled the virtues of those who sacrificed their lives to give the black man a sense of belonging.

He said the major reason for celebrating the Black History Month was to dedicate February each year to the remembrance of the roles played by blacks at home and in the diaspora in the abolition of slave trade.

Kanu noted that despite the challenges prevalent in the country, people are still moving on, contributing their quota in whatever capacity they could.

He urged the authority to use the inauguration to reflect and serve the people better.

Said he: “We are here at the Freedom Park to celebrate because people are still moving on in the face of the numerous challenges. It is significant because it’s taking place at the Freedom Park, an important venue.”

Kanu thanked the Lagos State Government for supporting the inauguration by providing the basic needs to make it a success.

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Mr. Ashamu Fadipe, hailed the inauguration. He described it as a step in the right direction.

He said: “We are here to celebrate activists who have made an impact in the black history worldwide. I also want to point out that Nigeria, which should have led the celebration of this historical development, has taken the backstage, leaving America to lead.”

He said 3.5 million Nigerians were taken “from these shores to the new world during the inglorious days of slave trade.” This, according to him, made Nigeria one of the most affected countries in the world when slave trade lasted.

Added he: “If we are here today to participate in the inauguration of the World Black Month, it is because of our contribution to it.”

Former Secretary-General of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Chief Ayo Opadokun, urged the government to emulate the United States where a true born of Africa, of Kenya origin, Barack Obama, is the president.

He noted that Nigeria has the capacity to become one of the world’s best, but because the laws are lopsided and are not applied, those who have misappropriated the funds meant for development have not been sanctioned. Hence corruption is prevalent in the land.

“Nigerian government needs a total reformation. The fact that after 52 years of independence it has failed to provide basic necessities of life to the citizens is an unfortunate testament that the black man cannot provide the good things he ought to provide.

“This is a country that has collected over $400 billion in petroleum fund, yet its people are one of the most wretched in the world. This is a contradiction that cannot be explained and government needs to re-order its priority,” Opadokun said.

Others at the event included Chief Fred Agbeyegbe, Baba Omojola and representatives of the musical group, the law profession and students.

  • Kanu hails Eaglets’ superb style

    Kanu hails Eaglets’ superb style

Nwankwo Kanu, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Ambassador and former Super Eagles’ captain, has applauded the ball artistry of the Golden Eaglets following their 3-0 victory over their Guinean counterparts at the weekend.

Kanu, who is regarded as the best player of his generation, said he was pleasantly surprised about the excellent handling of the ball by the Nigerian youngsters, adding that they have the wherewithal to go all the way in their forthcoming competitions.

“No Nigerian team is playing the way you do and I’m so impressed with your fine display,” Kanu who led Nigeria to a historic Soccer Gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics told the players in the locker room of the U.J. Esuene Sports Stadium on Sunday ” You are by far the better team when compared with Guinea and I know everybody that watched the game would agree with me that you are a very good team.”

Kanu, however, enjoined the players to listen to directives from their coaches if they are determined to be successful in their chosen career as footballers.

“We all can see that you are very good players but you can become better if you continue to listen to the coaches,” advised the gifted player whose goals helped the Golden Eaglets to win the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in 1993. “You are young, talented and the best way to improve yourself is to listen to the coaches because they have the experience more than you do.

“You are lucky to be working with this set of coaches and we all can see what they have been able to do with you under a very short time. To become better players, you must listen and be ready to do what you are told on the field,” he advised.

Meanwhile, the Golden Eaglets have admitted that the unexpected appearance of Kanu at their locker room was a morale booster to their fledging careers.

Ndidi Wilfred, the team’s assistant captain said the former Super Eagles star is a first choice hero for most of them, stating that it was a privilege that he came to counsel them.

“We felt really good to see Kanu before the match when he met us on the field but we were all fulfilled when he came to the dressing room to advise us,” said the beanpole defender. “It was a rare privilege because we only used to watch him on television. We really thank him and we are not going to disappoint him and Nigerians in general.”
