NNPC to resume oil exploration in Chad Basin in six weeks

The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Maikanti Baru says oil exploration activities in the Chad Basin will resume in six weeks time.

Baru made this known in a statement issued by the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ndu Ughamadu.

Baru said the resumption of oil exploration activities became necessary following improved security in the North East.

The NNPC boss said this when he visited Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno State and the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi in Maiduguri.

“We have been discussing with military authorities in the area and they have assured us of improved security.

“Once they give us the green light, we would resume operations in the area within six weeks,” Baru, who was represented by the Chief Operating Officer, Gas & Power, Mr. Saidu Mohammed, said.

Baru informed the governor that NNPC was keen on increasing its production from 1.9 million barrels per day (bpd) to three million bpd as well as increasing its oil and gas reserves, a target that necessitated exploring for more oil within and across some of the nation’s inland basins.

He commended the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari and Shettima for restoring peace, reconstructing and rehabilitating the region, adding that the Corporation was ready to provide support in that regard.

Baru appealed to the Shehu of Borno to prevail on his people to show oil exploration activities resumes.

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of relief materials by Baru to the Shehu for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state.

Responding, Shettima said the insurgency had taken a huge toll on the North-East region leading to the loss of more than 9.6 billion dollars, with Borno state alone losing 5.6 billion dollars.

“We need your support in our reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts, so that when the history of the new Borno is written, NNPC’s name will be written in gold,” he said.

Shettima said while international donour agencies and good-spirited organisations like the NNPC were keen on helping the IDPs, the state’s ultimate target was to resettle the IDPs in their various communities.

Also speaking, the Shehu of Borno commended the NNPC for identifying with the Borno people and expressed happiness over the prevailing peace across the state and the entire North East.

  • NNPC to resume oil prospecting in Lake Chad

NNPC to resume oil prospecting in Lake Chad

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said it will resume oil prospecting in the Lake Chad Basin of Borno.

The Group Managing Director of NNPC, Dr. Maikanti Baru, disclosed this when he visited Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, at the Government House in Maiduguri on Monday.

Baru was represented at the occasion by the NNPC Chief Operations Officer, Mr. Saidu Mohammed.

He said the corporation had concluded arrangement to mobilise heavy and sophisticated equipment to resume oil prospecting in the Lake Chad Basin.

He said the resumption, which would be done in the next six or eight weeks, was based on the military’s assurance to provide adequate security in the area.

Baru said the move was due to the present relative peace in the state and the degrading of Boko Haram insurgents in the North East region.

The NNPC GMD said, “We are here in Borno to express our full alignment to the ongoing reconstruction, rehabilitation and resettlement in all the liberated communities.

“Therefore, NNPC is seeking where it can come in and assist because the rate of devastation is worrisome.

“We are also in the state to inform you that in the next six weeks, we are going to redeploy our team of experts back to Maiduguri to resume oil exploration with better technology in the Lake Chad Basin.

“This is necessary with our renewed efforts in harnessing oil and gas and power to increase the economy of the nation in line with the agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari on job creation and economic diversification.”

Shettima commended the team for the visit and the NNPC’s resolve to resume oil exploration in the region.

The governor said his administration would partner with corporation to actualise the mission.

  • We’ll not close Borno IDP camps by May 29 – NEMA

We’ll not close Borno IDP camps by May 29 – NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said that the planned closure of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Borno by May 29 was no longer feasible.

Mr Muhammad Kanar, the NEMA North East Coordinator stated on this Sunday while speaking with newsmen in Maiduguri.

Kanar said that IDPs whose communities had been liberated were, however, free to return home voluntarily.

“Actually, Gov. Kashim Shettima arrived at the May 29 date for closure of all IDP camps based on his conviction that things will go on as they started from last year.

“It was Shettima’s hope and the hope of every disaster management expert for the camps to close early so people can return to their normal life,” he said.

Kanar said that the governor was motivated by the gallant efforts of the military in liberating many communities in a short period.

“Stakeholders were amazed by the speed our gallant soldiers achieved a lot within a few weeks in the fight against insurgency.

“They were able to recapture all the 22 Local Government Areas from the Boko Haram and liberated so many communities within and outside the areas.

“These gave hope and focus that by May 29 government will be able to return IDPs back home.”

He said that recent developments had almost made it impossible for the hope to be achieved.

“But now it seems that closing the camps is not possible by the set date. We have to re-plan again.

“By May 29, any IDP wishing to go back to his place can go, so long as the place is safe enough,” he said.

Kanar said that the hope of returning all IDPs back home was not totally lost.

“Up till today the hope is still there, if we can get the place safe, secured those willing to go back can still return.

“Right now we have satellite camps in all liberated LGAs, where IDPs living in Maiduguri can stay pending when they can move to their communities.

“If you do not want to stay in Maiduguri, you can go there. Many houses have been rehabilitated and normalcy restored in many LGA headquarters,” he said.

  • Boko Haram has been decapitated – Shettima

Boko Haram has been decapitated – Shettima

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state has said that despite the recent suicide bomb explosions, the Boko Haram monster has been decapitated.

He also said  the North has no business being poor, because it has enormous land, which is the most important resource and must be harnessed for the benefit of the region.

The Governor however said it is time to rebuild Borno State, which has been ravaged by Boko Haram insurgency for the past eight years, promising that Borno will be looking different in the next six months to one year.

Addressing the Summit for the Security and Development of Northern Nigeria, organised by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation (SABMF) Tuesday in Kaduna, Shettima said he remains unperturbed by the recent suicide bomb explosions by the insurgents, noting that it show that their power is waning, they are feeling the attacks by government forces more and they are becoming weaker.

He said though there can be no development without peace and vice versa, his government is set to invest massively in girl child education, job creation for the teeming youths and women empowerment to set an agenda of progress and development for the state that has been battling terrorism since 2009.

According to the Governor, “In spite of the crises, between six months and one year there will be massive development in Borno state with emphasis on gender empowerment, girl child education and employment generation for our teeming youths. We need to invest in education, create job opportunities for the teeming youths and ensure gender empowerment for our women.

“We will definitely overcome the challenges of Boko Haram we have gone over the rubicon, we now want to tow the path of growth and development. Boko Haram basks in the glory of attacking soft targets, but the monster has been decapitated. Suicide bombing is a sign of weakness of the insurgents. We have covered a lot of ground thanks to our armed forces for doing so much.”

Extolling the values of Sardauna of Sokoto, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, Governor Shettima, who has been described as a Sardauna in waiting for his leadership qualities, by Dr. Yusuf Maitama Sule, said Sardauna bequeathed on Northerners a North before religion or ethnicity where everybody coexisted peacefully irrespective of tribe or religion. “Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation has proved pessimists’ wrong, not many people expected the foundation to remain alive after eight years.

“Coexistence is enjoyed when the majority is magnanimous to the minority. We must create a platform where a governor of a Muslim dominated state must be fair to the minority Christian population and a governor of a majority Christian state should show empathy to Muslim minority. The fairness of a leader can unite or divide a society. Majority must be large at heart and the minority must be fair to accept that.

“North makes up 79% of the total land mass of the country and 53.8% of the total population of the country. The North has no business being poor because land is the most important of resources and must be harnessed for the benefit of our people.

“By 2050 our population will be 440 million making Nigeria the third most populous nation on earth; we would be facing desertification and other challenges that would make Boko Haram a child’s play. Leadership is vital but followership is essential, we all have responsibilities and we all have our roles to play. This is time for action,” Governor Shettima added.

Former Governor of Adamawa State, AVM Murtala Nyako (rtd) said the summit should have taken place immediately after the civil war to serve as agenda setting for the North. “This is the type of Summit we should have held immediately after the civil war. We have to reconcile some of the issues affecting the North and resolve everything.

“There is a question of understanding education educating people is for peace, peaceful coexistence is not only for your neighbour but for all humanity regardless of race, ethnicity and religion. Peaceful coexistence and respect for one another is very vital. North is a cosmopolitan place, today in globalization how can you talk about ethnic or religious separation?” he queried.

NYSC mulls re-opening orientation camp in Maiguguri

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) said on Tuesday that it was working towards re-opening of its Orientation Camp in Maiduguri following return of relative peace to the State.

“I am happy that the state government has been assisting in ensuring the welfare of the corps members.

“I thank Gov. Kashim Shettima for that and implore other states to emulate the gesture by ensuring adequate welfare for corps members serving in their localities”, he said.

Kazaure said the NYSC was working toward setting up six skills acquisition centers across the country to empower corps members with necessary skills.

“We identified lack of tradeing skills as the major problem causing unemployment among NYSC members.

“So we embarked on establishment of six skills acquisition centers in all the geopolitical zones of the country to help in training these young graduates to become self-reliant.

“W have almost completed work on the center in Gombe which will serve states in the North East.
He said the NYSC authority was also working on five other centres and were near completion.

The director-general said the essence of the innovation was to produce corps members that would eventually become job creators rather than being job seekers.

  • Borno governor inaugurates caretaker committees for LGAs

Borno State Governor,  Kashim Shettima, on Thursday inaugurated new caretaker committees to run the affairs of the 27 local government areas in the state.

The committees were inaugurated in Maiduguri after the expiration of the six months tenure of the previous committees.

The governor said the inauguration was in accordance with the provision of Section 81 of the Borno State Local Government Law 2000 as amended.

Shettima warned the new caretaker chairmen against having any links with Boko Haram insurgents.

“In the last few months we have had cases of chairmen, vice chairmen being arrested by the military for security concerns.

“Let me say that any caretaker chairman who dares to bring shame to this administration will be on his own,” Shettima said.

The governor directed all the caretaker committee chairmen to relocate to their councils of appointment and threatened to sack those that refused to comply.

  • 350 mosques offer prayers for Buhari in Borno

Thousands of Muslim faithful in Borno State on Friday offered special prayers for the speedy recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari, in compliance with the state government’s directive.

  • Gov. Shettima donates house to Boko Haram victim

Gov. Shettima donates house to Boko Haram victim

Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno on Friday donated a two-bedroom flat to a nursing Internally Displaced Person (IDP), Halima Algoni.

Algoni lost her husband and parents in an attack by the Boko Haram at Bulabulin Ngaura, Damboa Local Government Area in 2015.

The donation was in fulfilment of Gov. Shettima’s promise to Amina in January, after she had narrated her ordeal in the hands of the Boko Haram insurgents.

The IDP was spotted by Gov. Shettima during a presentation of relief materials donated by a Kano-based group of Ulamas at the El-Miskin IDPs centre, Maiduguri in January.

Hajiya Fanta Babashehu, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, presented the keys to the house to Algoni on behalf of the governor.

Babashehu said the gesture was aimed at alleviating the sufferings of the IDP who lost virtually all she had with no one to cater for her livelihood.

‘‘We are glad to know that Halima had given birth to a bouncing baby boy named Muhammad Kadu.

‘‘This house is donated to her by Governor Kashim Shettima, the key and all the document of the house are hereby given to her,’’ she said.

In her remarks, Algoni thanked Gov. Shettima for fulfilling the promise he earlier made to her.

‘‘May Allah give Kashim Shettima the keys to Janna (Paradise),” she prayed.

In his remark, Malam Zannah Laisu, the Chief Imam of Borno, commended the governor for fulfilling the pledge he made to his citizen.

Zannah called on philanthropists and wealthy individuals to complement the government’s effort toward assisting the under-privileged victims of the insurgency.

  • Kashim Shettima goes low profile

Like a great white whale zipping back and forth majestically across its marine domain, Kashim Bukar Shettima once ruled over the social scene. And, like the same whale wisely slinking to the depths of the ocean floor in order to hide from ruthless human hunters, the Skyejet boss has vanished from the public radar for a while, leading many to wonder what the stylish man of means is up to staying away from the limelight.

Known as a man with a soft voice and hard work ethics, Kashim Bukar Shettima’s rise through the business and social ranks was a thing to behold. Over the years, he has through dint of hard work expanded his business concerns under the Barbedos Group umbrella to include Barbedos Ventures Limited, an agricultural supply firm that he founded in 1991.

Shettima’s business interests include Barbedos Cars Limited, Skyjet Aviation Services Limited, and Barbedos Oil and Gas Services Limited, to mention but a few.

Comparably, as Shettima made his way up the business world’s ladder, his profile and social status also rose to the point where he became the darling of A-list events. These days though, he is nowhere to be seen at public gatherings. Having mustered an unsuccessful bid for political office during the last elections, Shettima has withdrawn to lick his wounds privately in his anonymous cocoon.

  • Boko Haram: Spare no one including my children, Shettima charges military

Boko Haram: Spare no one including my children, Shettima charges military

Worried by the renewed suicide attacks across the State by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima has called on the military and other security agencies to go after anyone factually discovered to be supporting Boko Haram including any of his
    children.

Kashim Shettima who spoke in a state wide broadcast on Friday morning emphatically disclosed that those who associate with Boko Haram are enemies of humanity and the state in particular, while calling on the good people of the state to support security agencies to ensuring that the insurgents are defeated head-on, while stressing that majority of Borno people are good people working against the insurgents.

“I know that majority of you, the good people of Borno State; have remained sincerely committed to fighting this insurgency. I have met parents who exposed their insurgent biological children and handed them over to security forces to face justice. I know that insurgents
and their allies, often hide their identity so well that good citizens may innocently associate with them.

“But the bold patriotism of parents who turn in their children has always strengthened our resolve. This is why I strongly say to security agencies, that anyone factually suspected of despicable links with the Boko Haram and other criminals should face justice even if that person happens to be one of my three biological children. Support for insurgents is a crime against humanity. I have met parents who encouraged their children to join the Civilian JTF and risk their lives to fight insurgents.

“I have even met parents who remained contended and proud even after their sons died fighting under the Civilian JTF. I have seen elderly men and young girls organize themselves to join the fight as vigilantes and the Civilian JTF, “Shettima said.

Shettima who is particularly disturbed over suicide bombings in the last couple of days across the state noted that, the recent resort to cowardly suicide attacks on soft civilian targets as signs of defeats and weakness that the insurgents are exhibiting to prove to their fellow terrorists across the world that they are still not defeated.

“‎In recent days and weeks, we have come under renewed attacks which horribly remind us, that our security challenges are still longing. It is regrettable that this upsurge in cowardly suicide attacks came not long after the patriotic military forces of this country recaptured
Sambisa Forest which used to be the operational zone of the Boko Haram terrorists. It was from Sambisa that these mass murderers used to train, prepare and launch bold attacks on our communities.

“Our gallant military and other security agencies have now denied them the use of their former high command. However, we must remind ourselves that the recapture of Sambisa Forest and the flushing out of the terrorists from most of their former enclaves does not mean that
    our struggle is over.

“Instead, the terrorists have resorted in their usual cowardly fashion, to stepping up attacks on soft targets.  Cowardly and vile attacks such as these on schools, places of worship, markets and other soft targets are signs of the terrorists’ weakness and of their desperation to tell their terror co-travelers around the world, that they are not yet finished. In this criminal endeavour, they resort to the use of teenagers and children as young as seven years. More recently, they even strap babies on the back of their recruits in order to slip through our security dragnets.

“They also use hard drugs on these innocent children who do not know what they are doing when they kill their own parents, relations, and fellow countrymen and women.  Many precious lives have been lost, hundreds of citizens including school girls were abducted; many more
people have suffered serious injuries as a result of these senseless acts of bloodthirsty enemies of peace, he said.

He called on the people of the state to take the security of the state in their hands by stepping up surveillance in their neighborhood and continue to remain vigilant by reporting any suspicious person to security agencies.

‎”Even though we are all saddened by episodes of attacks, as your Governor, I assure you that I serve with a constant reminder that the number one basis of Government is the protection of innocent lives and property.

“I know the weight of my duties and the oath I took before you and God. With your mandate, I have the privilege of first hand security reports and I can share with you, that for every vile attack that the terrorists were able to carry out on innocent lives, many more were stopped by our gallant security agencies, our Civilian JTF, vigilantes and hunters.

“As we know, the intention of terrorists is to demoralise us, make us to live in fear and prevent us from going about our normal lives and worshipping our God in ways that differ from their ungodly violence. We will not allow them succeed in their wish to make us live
in the permanent slavery of fear.

“In fact, they have failed in their mission because together, we have said no to them. And in saying NO, we must not let them cause us any more harm,” Shettima assured.

On his part as a government, the Governor said:  “The Government of Borno State will continue to provide the necessary support to our gallant military and security agencies and volunteers in their patriotic effort to restore peace and security in our ancestral land.

“We will continue to take preventive measures by working with community leaders across ethnic and religious divides in all our 27 local government areas to increase community policing. We all have roles to play.

“I know the sacrifices many citizens have made and it is because of your devotion that I am urging all the people of Borno State to rise up as one and increase our community vigilance, especially around soft targets.

“We must remobilize ourselves and step up vigilance and community policing around all our population and community centres like mosques, churches, markets, schools, hospitals, shopping complexes, football fields, social gatherings and motor parks. We must watch out for
strange and suspicious faces, not for the purpose of taking the law into our hands but for reporting these suspicious persons to the nearest security agents for prompt action. I urge you, the good people of Borno State, not to despair but to rise as one and stand up to this
murderous gasp of a dying insurgency,” the Governor said.

He expressed gratitude to  international and local humanitarian agencies and development partners for supporting the people of the State while also consoling with  families whose members were either killed, abducted or injured and those who lost property expressing
determination that Borno will bounce back stronger.
