Governors and other statesmen who also congratulated Nigerians for witnessing the Christmas, admonished Nigerians to keep faith with the country.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), in its message, however, urged the government to ensure food security in the interest of Nigerians

He said enhanced security measures have been put in place to protect Nigerians during the holiday period.

Shettima said “the relevant agencies have been mobilized to ensure your safety and comfort on all major routes,” urging travellers to remain vigilant.

CAN to FG: prioritise food security

CAN urged the Federal Government to prioritise food security, stressing that hardship is real in the country.

CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh said the desperation that led to stampedes and deaths reflect the harsh economic realities

He said: “On behalf of the nationaleadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), I extend warm Christmas greetings to all Nigerians.

“Christmas is a time of joy and togetherness, celebrating God’s greatest gift to mankind, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and the Light of the World. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, we are called to reflect on His values and teachings, which provide hope, peace, and guidance, especially during challenging times.

“This Christmas comes with a mix of joy and sorrow for many Nigerians. The recent stampedes at charity events in Abuja and Anambra, where innocent lives were lost, have left us grieving as a nation. These heartbreaking incidents highlight the growing desperation among our people and the erosion of societal values such as patience, orderliness, and respect for one another. For those grieving or injured, I urge you to find strength in the love of Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate. He is the source of our comfort and peace in times of sorrow and our guide to a brighter future.

“The philanthropists involved in these events have, for many years, brought relief and joy to the less privileged during Christmas. Their intentions were noble, and their generosity is commendable and should not be discouraged in any way.

“However, this year’s tragedies remind us that as a society, we must revisit the values that bind us together. Nigerians must learn to embody Christlike virtues, such as patience, empathy, discipline, and dignity, particularly in times of collective need. It is only by returning to these values that we can prevent such unfortunate occurrences in the future.

“These incidents also highlight the urgent need for our government to prioritise food security.

“Jesus Christ, during His ministry, not only fed multitudes with compassion but also called for fairness and justice in meeting the needs of others. Our leaders must remain resolute in the fight against hunger and take decisive steps to ensure that no Nigerian is left hungry or in need.

“Strengthening the agricultural sector, reducing food prices, and addressing inequality must be at the forefront of governance.

“As we commemorate the birth of Christ, let this Christmas inspire us to be agents of change in our society. Citizens must commit to fostering peace and orderliness in their communities”.

Okoh said leaders must act with compassion and wisdom to create a nation where every individual’s basic needs are met.

He added: “As individuals, let us strive to live out the teachings of Jesus by showing love, patience, and care to those around us.

“May this Christmas remind us that Jesus Christ is the foundation of hope and order, and may His light guide us in building a united and prosperous Nigeria. Together, as we look to Him, we can overcome our challenges and usher in a brighter future for all.

“May the joy, peace, and hope of Christmas fill your hearts and homes. Merry Christmas.”

Uzodimma commended the efforts of the Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in ensuring  food security in Nigeria.

Otti admonished residents of the state to allow the life of Christ to reflect in their celebration of Christmas.

He also called on them to be prudent and modest in their celebration.

He said: “The anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ the Saviour is an opportunity to reflect on the love of God for humanity through the incarnation of His only begotten Son to lead us to the path of eternal redemption.

“Avoid excessive consumption, especially of alcoholic beverages, and stay away completely from hard drugs and dangerous substances.

“When using the road, be mindful of other road users. Let us collectively commit to safety by restraining ourselves from going overboard in our celebrations.

“As a community of God’s people called to the promise of renewal and rebirth on this special anniversary of the birth of Christ the Redeemer, we are invited to reflect on the privileges and blessings that have been showered on us by the benevolence of the Creator and embrace with a cheerful heart, the responsibility of sharing what we have received with our neighbours, especially those in need because the true joy of Christmas is found in the wonders of sharing, loving and caring.”

Otti urged those who would be returning to their base after the season to go around the state to have a first-hand experience of the ongoing projects by his administration.

“While you are in the state for this Yuletide, do well to move around and observe the changes that have taken place since your last visit. You will see undisputable evidence of our development strides all around you because we have been very deliberate in spreading the fruits of good governance across communities,’’ he said.

“As Christians across the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, may the message of joy inherent in Christmas radiate in our lives and in our dear nation.

“When we imbibe the true message of Christmas – love, peace, and unity – we will see no divisions, but a common thread of humanity,” Mbah said.

“Christmas—an event commemorating the birth of Lord and Savior Jesus Christ reminds us of the power of giving, compassion, and unity.

Shettima criticises Kemi Badenoch for ‘denigrating’ Nigeria

Vice President Kashim Shettima has slammed the newly elected UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, for making disparaging remarks about Nigeria.

Badenoch of Nigerian roots, had in November pledged to enforce stricter immigration policies, warning that the current pace of migration risks overwhelming public services and undermining social cohesion.

However, speaking at the 10th Annual Migration Dialogue at the State House in Abuja on Monday, Shettima emphasized that migrants are a vital source of life in all societies.

He said: “Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the British Labour or Conservative Party. We are proud of her in spite of her efforts at denigrating her nation of origin.

“She is entitled to her own opinions; she has even every right to remove the Kemi from her name, but that does not underscore the fact that the greatest black nation on earth is the nation called Nigeria.

“One out of every three, four black men is a Nigerian and by 2050, Nigeria will support the United States, will be the third most populous nation on earth.”

In 2022, Badenoch faced criticism for remarks describing her experiences growing up in Nigeria, citing corruption, unfulfilled promises, and poverty.

“I grew up in Nigeria and I saw firsthand when politicians are in it for themselves.

“When they use private money as their piggybanks, when they promise the earth and they pollute not just the earth, but the whole political atmosphere with their failure to serve others.

“I saw what socialism is for millions. I saw poverty and broken dreams. I came to Britain to make my way in a country where hard work and honest endeavour can take you anywhere.”

“We must ensure that our education becomes holistic, addressing not just academic knowledge, but also practical skills and critical thinking as well as solutions to real-world problems. We need an education that builds bridges between learning and doing, between tradition and innovation, and between wisdom and global knowledge.

“A pro-Africa education system must integrate indigenous knowledge to address modern challenges. To do this, embracing technology and innovation is essential, which will prepare our youth to be creators rather than just mere consumers. Additionally, community engagement is crucial to link education to local development and address real-world challenges. Distinguished delegates from the African continent, the time for action is now.”

This approach will cultivate pride in our heritage and inspire solutions to our continent’s challenges.

“Second, technology integration: As the world becomes increasingly digitalized, Africa must leverage technology to expand access to education through e-learning platforms and digital resources.
