  • Court sentences student to two years imprisonment for stealing microphone from church

    An upper Area Court I sitting in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, on Tuesday sentenced a student , Hamisu Abubakar to two years in prison for stealing a wireless microphone from a Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church .

    The Judge, Lawal Suleiman, who sentenced Abubakar, 20, gave him an option to a pay a fine of N20,000 for stealing and one year imprisonment for trespass with an option of N10,000 fine.

    He said that the judgment would serve as deterrent to those who would want to indulge in such act.

    Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Daniel Longwal, told the court that the case was reported on April 9, at the Anglo-Jos Police station by one Pastor Nathan Abiodun of Mountain of Fire and Miracles, Sparkling Junction who is the complainant.

    The prosecutor said that while the pastors were having their prayer meeting in the afternoon, the accused went to the altar and disconnected the wireless microphone worth N35,000.

    The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of sections 334 and 273 of Plateau State penal code law.

    The convict pleaded guilty to the offence.

  • Applicant bags six months imprisonment for stealing chicken

    A Jos Upper Area Court 3, sitting in Kasuwan Nama, on Thursday, sentenced one Fahad Mohammed, a 20-year-old applicant, to six months imprisonment for theft.

    The Judge, Yahaya Mohammed, convicted Mohammed, after he pleaded guilty and was found to have committed the act of theft.

    Mohammed, however, gave the convict an option of N5, 000 fine.

    Earlier, the police prosecutor, Insp. Labaran Ahmed told the court that the case was reported on Nov. 8, at the Nassarawa Gwom, Divisional Police Station, by the complainant, one Auwal Umar, a resident of Filli Ball Jos.

    He said that the complainant disclosed that the accused, had made away with his 27 chicken valued at N24, 500 to an unknown destination.

    Ahmed revealed that during police investigation, the accused was arrested and he confessed to have committed the crime.

    The police prosecutor added that the act contravened section 287 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.

  • Court sentences businessman to eight months in prison for stealing cellphones

    An Upper Area Court I, sitting in Kasuwan Nama in Jos on Wednesday, sentenced a 20-year-old businessman, Mohammed Sagir to eight months in prison for stealing two Techno phones, valued at N65, 000.

    The police charged Sagir with three counts of trespass, shop breaking, mischief and theft

    The judge, Lawal Suleiman who sentenced Sagir, gave him an option to pay a fine of N6,000.

    He also ordered the convict to pay N15000 to the complainant, saying it would serve as deterrent to others who would want to indulge in such acts.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on Sept. 22, at the Laranto Police station by one Mohammed Sanusi of Katako Gareji Laranto , who is the complainant.

    Gokwat said that the accused broke into the shop and stole two Techno phones valued at N65, 000.

    He said that the phones were recovered from the accused during police investigation.

    After arraignment, he pleaded guilty to the offence .

    Gokwat said that offence contravened the provisions of sections 342, 347, 326 and 288 of the penal code law.

  • Man bags three years imprisonment for unlawful possession of ammunitions

    A Jos Upper Area Court II, sitting in Kasuwan Nama, on Tuesday sentenced Faruk Yusuf, a 33-year-old man, to three years imprisonment for unlawful possession of  live ammunitions.

    The presiding Judge, Mr Lawal Suleiman, handed down the sentence after the convict pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of unlawful possession of live ammunitions.

    Suleiman, however, gave the convict an option of N25, 000 fine.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Enegbonabe Edwin, told the court that the case was reported on Oct. 17, and transferred from the Plateau Central Police Area Command, Pankshin, to the State’s Criminal Investigative Department for further investigation.

    He said that on Oct. 17, a Police Constable, Mantur Augustine, attached to the Pankshin Command, suspected the accused person and conducted a search on him during which 5 live 7.9mm ammunitions were found on him.

    Enegbonabe said that the suspect had no licence or authority to be in possession of the ammunition.

    The prosecutor, however, said that the act contravened Section 27 subsection (1) of the Firearms Act. Cap F28, LFN 2004.

  • Court sentences 14-year-old to three years in prison for rape

    An Upper Area Court I, Kasuwan Nama in Jos, on Tuesday, sentenced a 14-year-old boy to three years in prison for raping a four-year-old girl.

    The judge, Lawal Suleiman, sentenced the teenager without an option to pay fine.

    Suleiman held that the punishment would serve as deterrent to others who would want to indulge in such crimes.

    The prosecutor, Inspector Yakubu Audu had earlier told the court that the case was transferred from the  Kaduna-Vom Police station  to the State Crime Investigation and Intelligence Department on September 24.

    Audu told the court that Ezekiel Jatau of Bachil District of Riyom Local Government reported that that the teenager lured his daughter into the bush and  raped her.

    On arraignment, the accused pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for leniency.

    Audu said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 283 of the penal code law of Northern Nigeria.

  • Police arraign businessman for raping a minor

    A 62-year-old businessman, Donatus Deshi, who allegedly raped a 14-year-old girl, was on Wednesday charged in an Upper Area Court, siting in Kasuwan Nama.

    Deshi, who lives in Angwan Rukuba, was charged with one count of Rape of minor, an act which the police said contravened the provisions of Section 282 of the Penal Code.

    The police prosecutor, Ibrahim Gukwat, told the court that father of the victim, Adukuchili, of the same address reported the matter at the Nasarawa Gwom police station on July 15.

    Gukwat said that the accused allegedly lured the girl into his room and raped her.

    He alleged that the accused after raping the girl, gave the victim N200 and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about it.

    He added that the act contravened section 282 of the Penal Code an offence which attracts up to 14 years imprisonment if convicted.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the crime.

    The judge, Mr Lawal Suleiman, after listening to his plea, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N200, 000 and a surety in like sum.

    Sulieman ordered that the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and must submit to the court a copy of his drivers license or permanent voters card with two recent passport photographs.

    He thereafter adjourned until Dec.3, for hearing

  • Court sentences 35-year-old to two years jail term for rape

    An Upper Area Court 3 sitting in Kasuwan Nama in Jos on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year-old applicant, Raymond Adamu, to two years in prison for for raping a minor.

    The judge, Yahaya Mohammed, sentenced Adamu without any option of fine.

    Mohammed said it would serve as deterrent to others who would want to indulge in such act.

    The prosecutor, Sgt.Ibrahim Gukwat, had earlier told the court that the case was transferred from 3 Armoured Division, Rukuba, to Force CID Jos on March 20.

    Gukwat said Adamu, in company of two others now at large, conspired and drugged and raped the 17-year-old girl.

    When arraigned, Adamu pleaded guilty to the charge, which the prosecutor said contravened sections 97(2) and 283 of the penal code law.

  • Driver gets four years jail term for rape

    An Upper Area Court 3, Kasuwan Nama in Jos, on Monday, sentenced a 35-year-old driver, Ahamed Talib to four years in prison for raping a nine-year-old girl.

    The judge, Yahaya Mohammed, who passed the sentence without an option of fine, also ordered Talib to pay N1,300 to the minor for compensation and medical expenses.

    Mohammed said that the sentence on the one-count charge of rape would serve as a deterrent to others, who might want to indulge in such act.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, O.C Ocho, told the court that the case was reported in March 20 at the Bukuru Police Station by one Ahamad Isah, the victim’s grandfather.

    Ocho said that the case was later transferred to the state CID.

    The prosecutor told the court that the accused, a resident of Akwan Doki, Bukuru, lured the girl to his room with a pack of biscuits and N200.

    Ocho said that the accused forcefully had a carnal knowledge of the girl, and in the process, she sustained injury and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

    However, the accused pleaded guilty to the offence and begged the court for mercy.

    According to Ocho, the offence contravenes Section 283 of the Penal Code Law of Northern Nigeria.

  • Court jails applicant for smoking Indian hemp in the market

    An Upper Area Court 3 in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, on Wednesday, sentenced a 20-year-old applicant, Sherif Umar to one year imprisonment for smoking Indian hemp in the market.

    The judge, Yahaya Mohammed, however, gave the accused an option of N5, 000 fine.

    Mohammed said the judgment would act as a deterrent to other youths who would want to engage in such negative vice and cause public nuisance.

    The accused pleaded guilty on arraignment to the one-count charge of smoking Indian hemp and causing public nuisance.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gukwat, told the court that the case was reported at the Farin Gada Police Station by Chairman of Cabbage Market, Farin Gada, on April 12.

    Gukwat said on the arrival of the Police at the scene, the accused was arrested with a substance suspected to be Indian hemp and hard drug.

    Gukwat said the offence was contrary to Section 183 of the Penal Code.

    Court remands cultist three years in Jos

    A Jos Upper Area Court sitting at Kasuwan Nama on Wednesday sentenced a 38-year-old man, Idris Umar, to three years imprisonment for cultism.

    Umar was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to a charge of inflicting several injuries on one Abdul Isa, and begged the court for mercy.

    The judge, Yahaya Mohammed, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine.

    The Police Prosecutor, Mr Ibrahim Gukwat, had told the court that Umar was arrested on Oct. 26, by the Special Task Force ( STF ) on security, for allegedly attacking Isa, along Ali Kazaure Street, Jos.

    The prosecutor said that further investigation by the police revealed that Umar was a member of Sara-Suka, a cultist group that had since been outlawed.

    Gukwat said that the offence contravened sections 346 and 976 of the Penal Code.
