    Katsina revokes licenses of private, community schools

    • Govt orders fresh registration across 34 local govt areas

    Katsina state government has revoked  all school licenses, directing private and community schools to reapply under revised fees and conditions.

    The Katsina State Government has revoked the operational licences of both private and community schools across the 34 local government areas of the state.

    In a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the state Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Sani Danjuma Suleiman, the government ordered fresh applications for all the affected schools.

    The government also reviewed the license application, registration, annual renewal and school upgrade fees, but warned that the revised fees should not lead to increment in school fees of the affected schools without the ministry’s approval.

    It, however, noted that the affected schools are expected to resume normal operations while the process of registration and renewal of the school licenses is ongoing.

    Govt launches training for Katsina teacher, distributes 20,000 tablets

    Katsina State Government has launched an ambitious training programme for 18,000 teachers and began distributing 20,000 tablets to boost teaching quality across the state.

    Acting Governor Malam Faruq Lawal Jobe, who flagged off the initiative at the Local Government Service Commission Conference Hall, Kaita Road, described it as a strategic investment in children’s future.

    “These are not just statistics but a strategic investment in the future of our children. By equipping teachers with modern tools and necessary training, we are aligning our educational system with global standards to prepare our students for 21st-century competitiveness,” Jobe declared.

    The programme forms part of the state’s comprehensive education reform, which includes distributing 30,000 uniforms to underprivileged children and installing CCTV cameras in 130 schools for enhanced security.

    Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hajiya Zainab Musa Musawa, hailed the initiative as “a significant milestone” in restoring educational excellence in the state.

    Katsina shows interest in taking over 10Mw windfarm

    The Katsina State government has expressed interest in taking over the 10 megawatt (Mw) windfarm in the state to boost electricity supply while integrating additional solar energy to expand the plant’s capacity.

    The State Governor, Dikko Umar Radda disclosed this during a strategic dialogue with the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu in Government House, Katsina.

    The dialogue was aimed at bolstering energy development partnerships between the Federal and State governments.

    The meeting focused on aligning federal and state efforts to advance sustainable power infrastructure and expand electricity access in the state.

    The discussion centred on the utilization and proposed hybridization of the 10 Mw Wind Farm in Katsina State. The state government, through its partnership with Genesis Energy, expressed interest in taking over the wind farm, built by the Federal government, to enhance electricity supply in the state by integrating additional solar energy to expand the plant’s capacity.

    Responding, the Minister commended Governor Radda for his visionary approach to energy development and his commitment to increasing energy access for the people of the state. He emphasized that improved electricity supply will not only enhance the quality of life but also stimulate economic growth and development in the region.

    Adelabu welcomed the governor’s request, noting that the proposed initiative aligned with the Electricity Act 2023, which empowered sub-national governments to drive electricity development within their jurisdictions. He further affirmed that the initiative is consistent with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritizes universal energy access and the economic empowerment of all Nigerians through reliable and sustainable power supply.

    He assured the governor of the Federal Government’s readiness to collaborate with the state Government to ensure a seamless concession process for the wind farm, and to support the state’s ambition to scale up electricity delivery for its people.

    Katsina budgets N4b for ”Rumbun Sauki” consumer shops take off

    The Katsina State Government has announced a budgetary provision of N4b for the take off of the ”Rumbun Sauki” consumer shops project aimed at enhancing affordable food access to residents.  

    Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Economy, Engineer Yakubu Nuhu Danja, described it as pivotal initiative by the State Government aimed at enhancing affordable food access and alleviating the economic burdens of the masses. 

    He further described ”Rumbun Sauki’ as a consumer-oriented initiative involving an investment of N4b,designed to establish subsidized shops across the State.

     He said: ”These outlets will offer essential food items-Rice, Flour, Maize flour, and Spaghetti for a start at a 10% subsidy, making them more affordable for our residents.

    ” The programme is set to.commence operations with seven centres: three in Katsina, and two each in Daura and Funtua senatorial zones. 

    ”There is also packaging and accessibility to accommodate varying household needs and income levels.The subsidised 

    commodities will be available in multiple packaging sizes: 50 kg, 25 kg, 10 kg, 5 kg, 2 kg, and 1 kg. 

    ” This customised packaging system ensures that all citizens, regardless of income, can benefit from the programme”

    ”The programme targets specific groups, including State and LOcal Government

    employees, Local Education Authority staff and citizens aged 60 and above. 

    “To ensure transparency and efficiency, all eligible beneficiaries are required to register either online or physically through the service providers engaged by the State.”

    He further described the payment options as flexible, accommodating  the financial constraints some beneficiaries may face and that the beneficiaries can opt to purchase commodities on credit, with repayments deducted directly from their salaries or pensions at the end of the month. 

  • Banditry attacks: Katsina Govt donates relief materials to Kankara IDPs 

    The Katsina State Government, through its State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), on Monday rushed truckloads of relief materials to internally displaced persons (IDPs), who were victims of banditry attacks.

    About 11 persons were killed when bandits struck at about 6.25pm on Saturday in some villages located in Kankara Local Government Area.

    It sparked off protests by aggrieved villagers, who carried some of the bodies and  barricade major highways in  the town.

    SEMA Executive Secretary Alhaji Babangida Nasamu told The Nation in an interview in his office that the IDPs were camped at Model Primary School, Kankara, where they are receiving medical and other attentions.

    The SEMA boss added that already the state government has released about N3.5 million in addition with other donations, such as, N35 million received from business mogul Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Dangote Foundations and several Katsina indigenes

    He said: “Governor Masari’s prompt response to emergency situations in Katsina State remains unparalleled. For instance, he has already ordered us to take inventory of the IDPs in Kankara to ascertain both their population and the extent of their needs. For a start, he ordered the release of N3.5 million pending further requests.”

    He said presently, most of the IDPs from other local government areas outside Kankara have returned to their homes to farm and some were accommodated by their relations.

  • Katsina to spend N400m on health care delivery  

    Katsina state government is to spend N400 million on the implementation of the World Bank sponsored health programme of the Save One Million Lives project.

    Hajiya Mariyatu Usman, the state commissioner for Health, announced this during a sensitization visit to the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouk, on Thursday.

    She said that the state would use the money for the promotion of the health of one million pregnant women and children under five years.

    Usman that government would intensify efforts on routine immunization and vaccination against child killer diseases.

    She said the state government would deploy 31 medical doctors and retired midwives and nurses to comprehensive health centres to ensure proper implementation and supervision of the programme.

    The commissioner said the state government would issue 11,000 delivery kits to pregnant women in labour for safe delivery.

    She added that government would also give 12,000 treated mosquito nets to pregnant women and children to prevent malaria.

    Usman said government has procured N50 million worth HIV and AIDS testing kits and drugs for effective treatment of the diseases.

    She said that efforts are on to intensify campaign against mother to child transmission of the disease.

    Responding, Farouk assured the commissioner of support of traditional rulers in actualizing the lofty objectives of the programme.

    He said cases of maternal and child mortality was more prevalent in rural areas due to poverty and ignorance.

    The emir called for the establishment of more health centres in the state to achieve effective and wider coverage of health care delivery.

     

  • 21 die in fire disasters in Katsina , says official

    The Katsina State Government said that its Department of Fire Service saved the lives of 45 persons from 431 fire outbreaks  last year.

    The state Commissioner of Information,o, Alhaji Hamza Burodo said this during the launch of three new fire- fighting vehicles on Tuesday in Katsina bought for N65million.

    Burodo , however, disclosed that 21 persons lost their lives then.

    “The Department of Fire Service also saved properties worth N1.3 billion during the period under review.

    “But properties estimated at N307 million were lost to fire outbreaks in the state during the period,’’ he said.

    Burodo said that the department through the Ministry of Information had established three sub-stations at Usman Nagogo, Sarki Kabir and Dutsen-Safe Housing Estates at the cost of N23.6 million.

    “The sub-stations are to cater for the growing Katsina metropolis with the aim of complementing the services of the fire service headquarters.

    “Two million naira was spent to provide supportive materials for the newly established substations,’’ he said.

    Also, the state Deputy Governor, Alhaji Mannir Yakubu, said that the state government spent N65 million to purchase the three fire-fighting vehicles.

    Yakubu also said that the state expended N9.6 million on the purchase of equipment, chemicals and uniform materials for the staff of the service.

    He said that the state government was ready to reduce the menace of fire disaster in the state by providing fire-fighting equipment and vehicles.

    “The state government will also consider providing hazard and other allowances to fire fighters in the state,’’ he said.

  • Katsina spends N3.5bn on renovation of 400 primary schools

    The Katsina State Government said it spent N3.5 billion to renovate 400 primary schools across the state in 2016.

    Malam Lawal Buhari Daura, the Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), disclosed this on Wednesday in Katsina in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    He said that government rehabilitated 100 schools each in Daura and Funtua senatorial zones during the period under review.

    He added that the state government also rehabilitated 130 primary schools in Katsina senatorial zone, and constructed 50 new primary schools across the state.”

    Daura said that the board had identified schools to be renovated in 2017.

    He revealed that the state government was carrying out the renovation of schools in phases in order to achieve the desired goal.

    Children, wives of prominent persons on councils’ payrolls- Masari

    Katsina State Government says it detected names of children and wives of some prominent persons on the payroll of local government councils in the state.

    Gov. Aminu Masari announced this while briefing newsmen on the ongoing verification of local government staff in Katsina on Monday.

    “It is unfortunate that these people have been on the list collecting salaries for over 20 years.

    “It is also disheartening to note that some people who do not live in the state are collecting salaries every month’’, he added.

    Masari said before the commencement of the verification, government introduced signing of attendance register so as to detect ghost workers.

    “We asked every worker to sign during the verification after which we compared the signature with the one on the attendance register.

    “We discovered that some people are just collecting what they did not work for’’, he said.

    According to the governor, the delay in the payment of May salaries for local governments’ staff is due to the verification.

    Masari expressed hope that government could save about N500 million after the exercise every month.

    He, therefore, called on the workers affected to be patient because the exercise was necessitated by the decrease in the federation account allocation to the state.

    The governor said the state government needed additional N1.2 billion to settle 34 local government workers’ salaries for May.

    He decried the high rate of redundant workers at the local councils.
