  • Stakeholders: Discord, greatest challenge of Nigerian sports

Sports enthusiasts on Monday in Lagos said that the development of sports in the country was being impeded by internal wrangling among sports authorities.

According to fans, efforts to develop sports in Nigeria might be a mirage if internal wrangling remained the order of the day.

Olisa Egwuatu, a board member and Technical Director, Nigerian Cricket Federation (NCF), said that sportsmen had lost their bearing since fans engaged in fights than proffering solutions to pertinent challenges.

According to him, Nigerian athletes are known for setting the pace with giant strides, but that is all gone because unity is farfetched.

“We just don’t seem to fully agree on one direction. It has been the greatest challenge of all times, but we have decided to pay less attention to it by putting blame on other vices when the centre is most important.

“Politics on the side of sports administrators, players and school board, who are leaders at their various levels, have shown unwillingness to come together on a common front to work.

“When we deal with strife, trust me, all other minor problems like funding won’t be seen as an issue anymore.

“Let’s put our acts together and have one goal, then we will come to terms with the fact that other challenges are very little to deal with,’’ Egwuatu said.

Kayode Adeniyi, Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Abuja Chapter, said that having a common goal was important for stakeholders to correct the already existing wrongs in sports.

He said that sporting activities in Western climes were given priority and as such, unity was inevitable among their administrators.

“The major setbacks we have suffered today in sports have been administrative. We focus more energy on fighting for positions when a lot more is at stake.

“The inventors of these games do not trade disunity for medals because they know that there is great strength in unity and we must copy them rightly,’’ he said.

Ondo guber: Tinubu, Akande have no anointed candidate – Boroffice

The Senator representing Ondo North senatorial district, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice has urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State to disregard the rumours on purported endorsement of any of the 25 governorship aspirants of the party by its national leadership.

A statement in Akure, the state capital by his media aide, Kayode Adeniyi, described the rumor on endorsement as needless distraction that will never aid its promoters.

He urged the over 3,000 delegates in the party to remain vigilant and steadfast as some desperate politicians may have ignited the rumor in an attempt to derail the focus of the party on free, fair, credible and transparent primary election.

Boroffice said he got assurances from the APC National leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, former interim National chairman, Chief Bisi Akande and  party leaders in the Southwest geopolitical zone that there is nothing like anointed aspirant or endorsement as far as the governorship primary election of the party is concerned.

The Asiwaju of Akokoland said: “As an aspirant and democrat, I have had intimate interactions and engagements with party delegates over the years.

“The support I enjoy from them is reassuring. No distraction, whether calculated or accidental, can derail our focus on August 27, the scheduled date for primary election. My supporters and I are ready to participate and win.”
He urged the party loyalists to comport themselves and ensure that the desired change in governance needed in the state is realised from February next year.

Boroffice condemns abduction of Ondo Monarch

The senator representing Ondo North senatorial district, Professor Ajayi Boroffice has condemned in strong terms the abduction of the Laragunsin of Iyasan ‎community, Oba Abiodun Oyewunmi in Irele council area of Ondo State by suspected kidnappers.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his media aide, Kayode Adeniyi, the chieftain of All Progressives Congress described the incident as callous, unfortunate and condemnable.
“We must not give in to dastardly attempts by cri‎minals to desecrate the revered traditional institution in Ondo State. As a people, we must continue to protect the sacredness and sanctity of our heritage against any form of intimidations and attacks from criminals. Those who have responsibilities to ensure the security of lives and properties in Ondo State should live up to the expectations of their offices. The era of kidnapping should not be allowed to creep back into the State.
“Having received assurances from the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies that the monarch will be freed unhurt from kidnapper’s den and reunited with his families and subjects as soon as possible, I wish to encourage the people ‎to enhance the rescue efforts by providing relevant information to the state security agencies, he said.
On the unfortunate incident, the senator extended the hands of solidarity to ‎the Chairman and all members of the Ondo State Council of Obas.
  • Boroffice urges Ondo indigenes to ‘troop out en mass’ for CVR

Boroffice urges Ondo indigenes to ‘troop out en mass’ for CVR

The senator representing Ondo North Senatorial District, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice on Monday urged the people of Ondo State to troop out en masse for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in the State.

According to a statement issued by his media aide, Kayode Adeniyi, the exercise is scheduled to take place between Wednesday, June 22 and Sunday, June 26, 2016.

The senator, in the statement, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), “to embark on the wholly cleansing of the voters’ register and thereafter safeguard the register from desperate politicians whose antecedents have shown the manipulative capacity to hijack and play foul with voters register by injecting invisible voters.”

“Those persons who did not register in the previous voters’ registration exercise and have reached 18 years and above should endeavour to participate in the CVR exercise. It is also an opportunity for registered voters to transfer their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to preferred polling units.

“The assurance from INEC on the credibility of the exercise is welcoming. Beyond the assurance, INEC should embark on a general cleansing of the voters’ register and safeguard same.

“Meanwhile, our people should be reminded that the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) remain the only instrument that can enable them to exercise the franchise to determine who governs Ondo State. It represents the power with which workers can change the party which government has made non-payment of salaries a matter of policy. It is also the only instrument with which the people can install a responsible government.

“I urge the people of Ondo State to troop out en masse to participate in the CVR exercise. They should rise and take charge of the process. I wish them hitch-free registration exercise,” the statement read.

  • In Ondo APC, Boroffice holds the ace

In Ondo APC, Boroffice holds the ace

Reminiscence of the days preceding the April 14, 2007 governorship contest in Ondo State, when the coinage – Iroko ravaged the length and breath of the state like an organism infested by staphylococcal contagio, active actors and meticulous observers of political happenstances and developments will concur with the assertion, that barely few months to the November 26 governorship election, the name – Boroffice has become an household name in Ondo State.

Beyond the seeming uniqueness of the name as not many families can claim ownership to such rare identity, the name has been subject of political discourse in the nooks and crannies of the state, on radio programmes, beer parlor arguments, conversations in homes and even unprovoked attacks from the state government and its agents.

While now sounds Portuguese, it is an anglicised yoruba that belongs to the descendants of the prominent Omololu family from the Oka-Akoko part of the state. Interesting, many persons have chosen to codify the name to various versions that suit them. While many people in the state now pronounce Boro-fix-it, some other persons especially, the aged and illiterates, prefer the Yoruba version; Boro fix eee.

Therefore,  when a visitor hears Boro-fix-it on visiting any part of Ondo State,  it is a reference to the senator representing Ondo North senatorial district, Professor Roberts Ajayi Boroffice. A quick read on this personality will show a man with humble background. He started career as a university lecturer and rose to become acting Vice Chancellor; the highest level any lecturer can attain within the university system. He became Director-General of many federal agencies, which is the apogee attainable by civil servants, where he recorded landmark achievements of global attestations.

And a man presently serving in the highest legislative body in the country, the Nigerian Senate. While this piece isn’t designed to look at his antecedents as only volumes of books can address that,  I will be restricted to writing about few instances that portray him as the most influential politician in the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, the platform upon which he has launched ambition to govern Ondo State.

Though, Boroffice claims not to be a professional politician, he has a political machinery in the state through which thousands of people have been empowered and gainfully employed. The political machinery has made it quite possible for a lot of people to articulate and accomplish their political ambitions. It is a viable vehicle that has transported people to executive destinations and aided the election of a number of persons who have been sworn in as parliamentarians at both the state and federal legislatures. With the strength and intimidating successes of the structure, only a naive politician will disagree that the structure holds the ace in the Ondo State chapter of the APC.

Some months ago, Boroffice was rumoured to have imposed the incumbent Minister of State for Niger Delta,  Prof.  Omoyele Daramola, as the minister representing Ondo State in the Federal Executive Council (FEC). At that time, it was clear the sponsors of the rumour were some leaders who crashed out from the ministerial race. Perhaps, they were deeply pained and decided to get at a perceived enemy. They must have forgotten that the President has prerogative powers to appoint whoever he likes to serve in ministerial capacity.

When the rumour hit town, I held and still hold the view that these guys might have appropriated more powers to the senator than he actually has. By the way,  whether he indeed influenced the appointment of the minister or not is not what I can confirm. However, it is evidently clear that the senator and the minister belong to same political family and the duo share a cordial relationship that dates back many decades ago.

One will recall that after the failure of the defunct ACN in the 2012 Ondo State governorship contest,  many party leaders including the party’s candidate deserted the state. In fact, some of the aspirants had fled before the day fixed for the poll. At about this time, the PDP-led state government, aided by security agencies, launched what appeared to be widespread attacks against members of the ACN. Party members were arrested on flimsy reasons, prominent party members were bullied, intimidated and attacked in their homes, and some persons were shot. Boroffice became the rallying point for venerable members of the party. He organised a summit for party members and encouraged them not to despair. At the summit,  he preached hope and spoke glowingly about the future like a prophet. I believe party members are joyous that the same progressive coalition has formed the federal government barely 2 years after those trying period but he who stood by the party in those trying period, he who offered hope and support to despondent party members also deserves applause.

The crises which rocked the National Assembly after its inauguration on the 9th of June, 2015, offered another chance to mirror a senator who has unconditional loyalty to his party,  the APC.  He had options. Some were quite lucrative. But the actions of Senator Boroffice showed a reliable personality that the APC can trust through thick and thin. His actions have shown a firm believer in party supremacy in no small measures.

One must not fail to allude to the reality of his achievements as a senator. His interventions can be felt from the home front by his primary constituents and by extension, across Ondo State. In the areas of rural electrification, agriculture, education, health, industrial establishments and financial empowerments, his interventions are noble, impactful, people-oriented and landmarks. It is on record that the senator has sponsored the building of blocks of classrooms and toilet facilities in schools in his senatorial district and a gigantic school complex at Christ Pry School, Oka Akoko. He has built Skill Acquisition Centres in Ifon and Ikaram – Akoko. There is an ICT building at Iwaro – Oka, courtesy of the senator. He built an emergency Obstetrics care unit, Iboje – Oka. The hospital is christened emergency care unit, yet massive and magnificent. He has sponsored solar powered borehole at Arigidi and many others communities. He facilitated solar powered streetlights in Ido – Ani, Idogun, Oka – Akoko and other communities. He built Gari processing industry at Iboropa – Akoko and established Cashew nut processing factory in the zone. He has sponsored rural electrification and distributed transformers in many communities in Ose and Owo axis. He also supported farmers in Owo local government with seedlings and gave them financial empowerment.  Artisans, hairdressers, vulcanisers and petty traders are not left out. They are beneficiaries of generators, grinding machines and financial supports from the senator. He has distributed scores of tricycles to constituents and empowered APC leaders, drivers and other beneficiaries with over 40 vehicles.

With this flawless,  though incomplete, testimony on the impacts of a senator on his constituents, why many groups from Ondo South and Central are working for his election as governor should surprise nobody. It is simply decisions informed by the quest for development. Many people from other zones have confessed. They said if this man can make all these interventions without executive powers, he would make a good governor. I do not disagree. The multitude of delegates and groups that have endorsed his guber ambition are therefore on point.

His portray into politics has not been without controversies and challenges. After he joined the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria in 2012, Governor Olusegun Mimiko deployed all his powers and political arsenal in a bid to declare the seat of the senator vacant.  The rubber-stamp state legislature was manipulated to pass a motion to recall him from the Senate. As expected, it held no water beyond the fact that it made headlines in the newspapers. Still on same plot, principal lawmakers were offered bribes in hard currency but the purpose for which bribe was offered was frustrated by the highly-intelligent strategies and political networks of the senator. Lo and behold,  he completely his term as a member of the 7th Senate.

One will also recall that when the senator had to dump his governorship ambition to support the governorship candidate of his party in 2012 due to the political exigencies of those times, Governor Mimiko, who was facing re-election campaign, reportedly gloated at his perceived misfortune and celebrated it at Government House.

In the 2015 general election, the machinery of the state government was practically relocated to Ondo North senatorial district. The agenda was simple and straightforward, the re-election bid of Senator Boroffice must be stopped.  In the days preceding March 28, the easiest way to make money in Ondo State is to visit the goverment house and parade yourself as aggrieved supporter of the senator,  you will not only be offered cash and sovernirs, you will also be honoured with gubernatorial handshakes and sometimes hugs. Not a few known persons exploitated the desperation of the government to make cool money in those days.  At the end,  the senator floored the governor and the candidate of the PDP at the poll because the governor actually contested the election.

While a fair and transparent primary election is non-negotiable, the party leaders and elders alike must be forthright. They are expected to guide the delegates of the party from repeating the mistakes of the past and also prevent graver mistake.

Without prejudice to politicians who defected to the APC after their party lost the presidential election, they cannot be trusted to implement the party manifestoes on education and industrial revolution. They cannot be trusted to adhere with party’s standards on probity and transparency because they might have only defected to the APC in the body while the soul belongs to the former party. With a history of unconditional loyalty to the party and unchanging commitment to the development of Ondo State and her people, Boroffice has the capacity to implement the agenda of change and progress in Ondo State.

In 2015, the man, Boroffice, severally hit airwaves and headlines as being considered for the position of vice presidential candidate of the APC. At the end of the process, a professor and devoted Christian like him, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was chosen. I believe Boroffice has paid his dues, it is time for the party to compensate a loyal party man. I agree with those groups that have been speaking out and telling whoever cares to listen that the APC can only win the forthcoming election if its best aspirant is presented as its flagbearer. As a threat to the status quo in Ondo State, I believe the senator is well positioned to lead the onslaught against PDP in Ondo State.

  • Ondo: Boroffice replies Mimiko, insists govt lied

Ondo: Boroffice replies Mimiko, insists govt lied

The Senator representing Ondo North Senatorial District, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice has replied the Ondo State Government over its reactions to the controversial sum of N11bn allegedly spent by the state government on federal roads in the state.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Kayode Adeniyi, the All Progressive Congress (APC) Senator said that the reaction of the Mimiko-led administration to his honest observations raised more questions than answers.

“The Media Office of Distinguished Senator (Prof.) Ajayi Boroffice has noted the reaction of the Ondo State Government, through its Commissioner of Information, Kayode Akinmade, to the appeal made by Senator Boroffice to the Federal Government on the need to exercise circumspection on the issue of reimbursement of funds reportedly spent on federal roads to the Mimiko-led government.

“The twin-ground of appeal are: firstly, it was in view of the conflicting figures emanating from the governor and his appointees. Secondly, it was due to the fact that most of the federal roads, for which the Mimiko-led administration is seeking reimbursement, are presently death traps that require the urgent intervention of the federal government.

“Therefore, the under listed points must be stated: That the reaction of the government falls short of gubernatorial mien. It was hogwash from a sloppy commissioner who glaringly failed in the cruel bid to muddle up issues with his expressed befuddlement and confusion. Obviously, he knows little or nothing about the government he speaks for.

“Meanwhile, the insinuation that Senator Boroffice is working against the interest of the state‎ is false and misleading. That was a poor shot at blackmailing the federal lawmaker for his honest observations.

“Why is the government seeking to wipe sympathies of the people like a forsaken-crying baby? A man who has been at the forefront of attracting the intervention of the federal government to fix bad roads in Ondo State cannot be said to be working against the interest or hate the same state. He should also not be expected to keep mute when there is a coordinated plan to defraud the federal government,” the statement read.

Similarly, the Senator noted that it is a known fact that the N11bn claimed to have been expended on federal roads in Ondo State is an accumulated figure from past administrations.

The Lawmaker further said: “Of course, the Mimiko-led administration couldn’t have claimed it single-handedly spent N11bn on roads when roads are not built inside a dome – the official conduit pipe to siphon public resources. The emphasis of the government on an obvious fact is therefore a mere distraction. It doesn’t address the issue of conflicting figures”

‎Putting the record straight, Senator Boroffice noted that on Tuesday, 10th of November 2015, Governor Mimiko claimed that the state government was owed N7bn on federal roads. Senator Boroffice also noted that on Thursday, 29th of January 2015, the state commissioner for Works, Gboye Adegbenro‎ said‎ that N11bn was spent on federal roads.

Presently, Akinmade has claimed part of the N11bn incurred by the state government had been paid three years ago with N9bn balance yet to be paid. If this administration were to be a transparent one, should it take the observation of Senator Boroffice to bring it to public domain that it received N2bn in 2013?

The Senator raised further questions saying: “If the state government was paid N2bn out of N11bn in 2013, why did a commissioner of works, Gboye Adegbenro, claim that the amount yet to be received by the state government was N11bn in 2015? Was the money received without the knowledge of the state commissioner? Was it received through the backdoor or did Adegbenro deliberately lie to the people on behalf of the government?

“Considering the fact that Akinmade has said N9bn is the balance yet to be paid, why did Governor Mimiko claim it was N7bn in November, 2015? Does it mean Governor Mimiko made an uninformed comment? Who should the people believe between Governor Mimiko and Akinmade? Who is in charge?

“Rather than reconcile figures, the commissioner has only confirmed that indeed, the figures brandished by the Governor and other officials of the government ‎are conflicting. ‎A competent government official would not seek to wave off issue of accountability and transparency by resorting to political innuendoes. That is being clever by half.

“As clearly analyzed above, Akinmade needs to acquire basic rudiments of arithmetic as much as he needs fundamental knowledge of space technology.”

On a reiterating note, Senator Boroffice maintains the view that most of the affected roads are death traps and the people of Ondo State would prefer the federal government to fix them rather than pay such funds to an administration that lacks accountability and transparency.

“‎Finally, given the established conflicting figures as admitted by the officials of the Ondo State Government, the federal government should exercise caution on this issue. And the Hon. Rotimi Ameachi-led team should make its report and recommendations available to the public,” the Federal Lawmaker maintained.
