Policemen warned to vacate dilapidated barracks

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone II Kayode Aderanti Tuesday warned police operatives residing in dilapidated barrack buildings to vacate.

He stated this during a familiarisation visit to the Lagos Police Command at Ikeja.

Aderanti who reminded police personnel that their lives were valued and services needed by the country, described as unfortunate, the recent building collapse at a Lagos barrack that injured several persons.

Addressing officers and other ranks, Aderanti admonished them to shun corruption and unprofessional conducts.

He said: “Policemen living in rickety barracks should vacate those buildings. Most of those structures cannot stand any integrity test.

“I urge you in your best interest to move out because of your family. When you go to work, you leave them at home and if the building collapses, they will be victims.

“We have a genuine desire for them to be alive because it’s only the living that can fight crime. Anyone who does not live in police barracks is paid his/her rent allowances.”

On taming the menace of kidnappers, Aderanti said: “Already, the commissioners of police in Lagos and Ogun States are working in partnership with the inspector general of police’ anti-kidnapping unit.

“Also, there has been an increase in cultism in Lagos and I charge policemen to take up the responsibility and ensure their effrontery is reduced to the barest minimum.

“Illegal duty by policemen has reached an alarming proportion and is highly unprofessional. It needs to be nipped in the bud. Some of them operate in unmarked vehicles, harassing people and searching through their phones. That must stop as violators will be severely dealt with.

“The current Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has zero tolerance for corruption and official misconduct.

“Whosoever requests money for bail or to register people’s complaints is on his own and they will be tackled appropriately. I warn again, don’t demand gratification from members of the public.

“You must gather intelligence before going for any operation and not afterwards. There should also be joint intelligence gathering and sharing among the commands.”

Yuletide: Police move to end gridlock, robbery on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Nigeria Police Friday said it would man the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway round the clock to ensure that those travelling for the festive period are safe.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Zone II, Kayode Aderanti stated this during a tour of the route and inspection of identified black spots.

He assured that the construction companies carrying out rehabilitation works on the road would remove all road blocks and diversions for easy movement.

According to Aderanti, the complaints from users of the road was of concern to the Inspector General of Police  (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, who directed that the police in the zone should collaborate with other agencies to bring succor to the masses.

He said: “We embarked on this mission at the behest of IGP who’s concerned about gridlock and brigandage along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. He directed us to undertake joint interagency inspection to see the way out and put in a good template to ensure millions of people travelling out of Lagos are safe. We cannot pretend things are okay.

“We are interested in security and free flow of traffic. We are ready to provide security 24 hours daily if the construction workers want to extend their working hours.

“In order to ensure that our people are safe and happy, we would place patrol vehicles along the expressway to wade off miscreants and criminals. There would be heavy police presence both uniformed and undercover personnel because we understand that crime has no boundary.”

Continuing, Aderanti who visited Julius Berger and RCC companies to ascertain when they would complete their work, expressed pleasure that the long bridge and Shagamu Interchange would be opened in a few weeks’ time.

He said: “Julius Berger has promised that they would complete their work on the long bridge and the Shagamu Interchange in a few weeks’ time. That means people would be able to travel with ease as traffic congestion caused by certain diversions would reduce.

“As for the police, we would collaborate with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and other relevant agencies in Lagos and Ogun for free flow of traffic. We would provide the agencies the needed security for them to do their jobs.

“We are also going to man all the identified black spots. Collaborate with the construction companies to see how they can block most of the illegal entry and exit points around Warewa.”

Of the 184 illegal entries and exits identified in October at Warewa, it was gathered that 105 has so far been blocked.

At the tour were Ogun State Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu, representative of the Federal Ministry of Works Olukayode Popoola and FRSC representative MO Olapade, among others.

In his remark, Popoola decried the encroachment on right of way, noting the need for the relocation of Mowe Market.

Odogbo who hails from Warri North in Delta State, said: “We are 11 in number. We came with two boats but one had problem, so we used only one. We came with seven rifles. The extra three rifles that brought our total rifles to 10 belonged to the three policemen killed by my gang. They were not posted to the bank. My members saw them on road patrol. They interfered and they shot them dead and took their three rifles.

“I was the first to fire a warning shot when we entered the bank, a branch of First City Monument Bank (FCMB) located on Admiralty Way. We collected N15million from the bank’s vault. We sprayed out the money from ATM machine.

They gave me N500,000 as my own share. I was arrested in my house in Warri.”

Aderanti said after the movie-like action, he convened a meeting of all commanders of combat units including Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Operatives, Department of Investigation, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), SARS, Special Investigation Bureau (SIB), Marine and Police Mobile Force (PMF), mandating them that the perpetrators must be fished out.

Aderanti said based on intelligence, six Decoy SARS teams were dispatched to Delta, Ogun, Ondo states and Ikorodu, Lagos under his supervision.

The suspects, he said, had confessed, adding that efforts were being intensified to arrest their fleeing accomplices.

  • 73 robbers, 8 policemen killed in Lagos

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, on Thursday revealed that about 73 armed robbers and eight policemen have been killed in Lagos during exchange of gun fire between the police and robbers in the last one year.

Aderanti disclosed this at the 8th Town Hall Meeting on Security held at the City Hall, Lagos Island.

He said the robbers were killed between November 2013 and October 2014, adding that the police also arrested 423 armed robbers and foiled 372 armed robbery incidents within the period.

The commissioner also added that the police recovered 255 arms, 4,043 ammunitions and 560 stolen vehicles.

Other statistics as disclosed by the police boss include, 833 stolen vehicles in Lagos in the last 12 months, with the breakdown revealing that 358 vehicles snatched by robbers at gun point, 468 others stolen from where they were parked and seven others driven away.

He added that there were 68 armed robbery incidents in Lagos in the last 12 months, while 280 people were murdered in Lagos in the same period.

He explained that reasons behind the high cases of murder in the state, include gangsterism and rivalry, motor transport unionism, thuggery, youthful exuberance, unemployment and politics.

In his remark, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said the logic behind the fund was to have a platform to tackle security challenges in the state.

“We use our resources to protect ourselves and others instead of using it to protect ourselves alone. And that is where the real battle against crime begins, at the organic cutting edges of the agencies in the divisions and area commands within the states, with effective visible patrol presence and early intervention on a daily basis,” the governor said.

Fashola appealed to corporate bodies and individuals to continue to support the STF, saying that any setback allowed would have untold consequence.

The dogs which attacked a four-year-old boy in Lagos last Thursday will soon be paraded alongside their owner, the police said yesterday.

Commissioner of Police Kayode Aderanti said the dogs and their owner, Stanley Wesley, were already being detained and facing interrogation.

He explained that after investigations, the dogs and their owner will be charged to court, adding that operatives are trying to look at the relevant laws guarding domestic pets.

The victim, Omonigho Abraham, who is currently being treated at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, was attacked by the dogs inside his Adegboyega Street, Akeem Estate, Igando, Lagos home.

It was reported that the dogs, Jack and Gadaffi, dragged him in the compound for over an hour while policemen and sympathisers watched helplessly at the entrance of the house for fear of being attacked.

His elder brother, Osemudiamen said the dogs chased Omonigho, Bobby and himself while riding bicycle inside the compound.

Osemudiamen said Bobby and himself quickly ran upstairs and locked the door, but added that when Omonigho got to the door, they opened it for him but one of the dogs followed him into their flat. He said Bobby and himself jumped down from upstairs, but Omonigho could not and was attacked.

It was gathered that it was the screaming by the boys that attracted passersby who thronged the compound but could do anything.

However, the command’s spokesperson, Kenneth Nwosu said the boy was rescued from the dogs by policemen.

Aderanti described the incident as unfortunate, adding that those who have domestic pets should learn how to keep them to avoid such occurrences.

“I am sure he (Aderanti) will be able to maintain the tempo, “ he said.
