Firm writes IG over discontinuance notice in N350.9m fraud case

A financial consultancy firm, Rosiyke Financial Consult Ltd, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over a notice of discontinuance filed on a pending criminal case involving N350.9 million fraud.

The petition, dated May 15, was submitted by the firm’s legal counsel, Ernest Annie Nwoye.

It concerns charge ID/24069C/2024 pending before a Lagos court.

Rosiyke is urging the IGP to investigate the circumstances under which Superintendent of Police (SP) R.N. Maiguru and Inspector A.I. Aminu, both of the Legal/Prosecution Section of FCID, Force Headquaters, Abuja, sought to discontinue the charge.

The Notice of Discontinuance is dated March 28.

The case stems from a July 2022 transaction in which Ms. Rukkaya Saadina Dantata allegedly received N350.9 million from Rosiyke to remit $580,000 to suppliers in China.

While she reportedly admitted receiving the funds during interrogation by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), the telex confirmations she provided were later discovered to be fake.

Despite the severity of the allegations, Ms. Dantata was granted bail and not detained, allegedly due to high-level interference.

A proposed repayment plan soon collapsed after she became unreachable, and both she and her guarantor were declared missing.

According to the petition, the FCID under former Deputy Inspector-General Sylvester Alabi made efforts to trace Ms. Dantata, including placing her on an Interpol red notice and an immigration watchlist.

In early 2024, a N100 million settlement was reportedly brokered by a retired Commissioner of Police.

However, the settlement was never honoured, and Ms. Dantata remains at large.

The petitioner alleged that members of Ms. Dantata’s family made a fresh settlement offer in March 2025, which also failed to materialise.

Shortly after, Maiguru and Aminu filed the notice of discontinuance.

The petitioner urged the IG to investigate the duo and to ensure that the case proceeds to full prosecution.

It emphasised that a criminal charge cannot be withdrawn without the consent of the court or the Attorney-General of the Federation.

Any attempt to circumvent due process, it warned, undermines public confidence and damages the reputation of the Nigeria Police.

The petitioner also called on the IG to ensure justice was served, restitution made, and anyone involved in obstructing the case held accountable.

The Lagos State Police Command had arraigned Dantata for N350,900,000 fraud.

She was arraigned on two counts of fraud, cheating, and obtaining money under false pretences before the Ikeja Special Offences Court.

Prosecuting counsel, Ezekiel Rimamsomte, told the court that Dantata committed the alleged offences between July and August 2022.

He said the defendant obtained N350,900,000 by fraudulent means, which was transferred into her account and that of her firm, Adat Ventures, under the name Rukayya Saadina Dantata.

The police added that Dantata deceived her victims, Saka Rasak of Rosiyike, and others of Financial Consultant Ltd, located at No. 50 Kingsway Building, Lagos, by pretending to conduct legitimate business transactions.

According to him, the offences committed contravened Section 1(a)(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act 2006 and Section 323 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

Dantata pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against her.

Justice Rahmon Oshodi granted Dantata bail of N30million with two sureties in like sum.

The Inspector – General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has constituted a team to  investigate the alleged assassination claims by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

Akpabio petitioned Egbetokun, demanding investigation and prosecution of the senator  over the claims.

In the April 3 petition, and copied to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, Akpabio described the allegations as “defamatory” and called for legal action to preserve peace and his safety.

Egbetokun, who confirmed that a team is investigating the matter through Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said he will unravel the truth.

She claimed that the alleged plot was due to an unsuccessful attempt to initiate her recall from the Senate.

The embattled senator also said she had already reported the matter to the IGP before publicizing the issue.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was quoted as saying that: “On the 13th of March at 10:00 pm, mind you, two days before that, Akpabio had called Governor Ododo on the phone to commence my recall, but Ododo told him it would be impossible. Ododo told Akpabio that the recall will be impossible because the masses are with me. But Akpabio was not satisfied, so he called Yahaya Bello. I was informed of everything.

“The meeting was two fold. They told him to commence my recall and that he was going to fund it. The second thing he said was that he should try and kill me. I didn’t make this public, but I have written to the IG of the Police.

“Akpabio told Yahaya Bello that he should make sure that killing me does not happen in Abuja, that it should happen here so that it will look as if it was the people that killed me here,” the senator alleged.

    • Group holds Ramadan lecture

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has advised the youth to shun crime.

He emphasised the importance of sensitising young people about the consequences of their actions.

He spoke at the Ramadan lecture for young persons in Lagos State entitled: “Name, fame and shame:  The consequences of one’s actions in the hereafter” organised by the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), which held at the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) secretariat, featured police officers, other community stakeholders making a case against cultism, robbery and related crimes.

Egbetokun, who was represented by the Deputy commissioner of Police (Operations), Lagos Command, Tijani Fatai, stressed the futility of engaging in crimes, urging youths to abandon criminal activities and embrace positive change.

He said: “I want to tell the youth that crime and criminality do not pay. They need to change their ways. If you are members of a cult group, if you are so much into drug addiction, we should know that this can bring about, you know, can lead you to more criminal tendencies like crimes of robbery, rape, and all what have you.”

He expressed optimism that the lecture’s message would resonate with the attendees and inspire them to make positive choices.

The National Coordinator of POCACOV, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olabisi Okuwobi, noted that the lecture was aimed to engage youth and community members in a dialogue about the consequences of their actions, particularly in relation to cultism and other vices.

According to her, the initiative is a “non-kinetic policing” strategy focused on prevention rather than cure.

“The IGP believes that law enforcement alone cannot curb crimes in Nigeria. It’s better for us to prevent criminalities from happening than to start looking for ways to rehabilitate our youth after they’ve been involved in crime”, she explained.

She noted that the lecture sought to leverage the holy month’s emphasis on reflection and positive change adding that the choice of Ejigbo as the venue was deliberate, as the area has historically been associated with cult activity

“We believe that even the worst offenders, as Muslims, respect this month of Ramadan. We’re telling them that whatever actions they take in this life, either during or after Ramadan, have consequences.

Ejigbo used to have a high number of cult boys, we wanted to use this opportunity to talk to the remnant of these groups and encourage them to change their ways”, she said.

She reiterated POCACOV’s commitment to spreading awareness and ensuring that the message of “discipline, self-restraint, and ethical living reaches as many young people as possible”.

The Chairman of Ejigbo LCDA, Monsurudeen Oyedele-Obe stressed the need for moral discipline and spiritual consciousness in making life choices.

He appealed to youths to shun cultism and other criminal activities.
