    Kayode Ojo’s dream cut short

Engineer Kayode Olubunmi Ojo is a certified Nigerian engineer, who made a name for himself with sheer hard work and dedication over a few decades. The philanthropist, who also ventured into politics, has been eyeing the Ado Ekiti State house for some time.

EKO, as Ojo is fondly called, had his dream cut short after his attempt at contesting for the All Progressives Congress (APC)  Ekiti State governorship primaries was stopped midway.

It is no longer news that his candidacy was disqualified by the APC, however, what many do not know is the impact of the dream, which was cut short.

His sin, according to reports, was not conforming to the party’s constitution and electoral act provisions. He was also reported to have failed to meet the required nominators per local government.

The youthful Pro-Chancellor & Chairman, Governing Council, University of Nigeria Nsukka, had his hopes dashed by the party after his disqualification from the race.

Those close to Ojo noted that beyond his boardroom acumen, he also served as Pro-Chancellor across three reputable higher institutions, where his leadership has been marked by reforms, infrastructural renewal, and a commitment to academic excellence. He understands the central role education plays in shaping the future of Ekiti, a state known for its rich intellectual heritage.

Ojo’s dream of leading the Ekiti people has been a long one but it became public in 2018 when he said he contested because he believed he could change the story of Ekiti State for the better. He invested in youths and supported himself with young Ekiti indigenes to achieve his dream.

The question on the lips of many is,  will this be the last of Ojo on the political scene?

    • ‘I respect the party, but I will contest’
    • Enugu state executive council dissolved

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday disqualified a governorship aspirant, Kayode Ojo, from participating in the October 27 primary.

The highest administrative organ also dissolved the Enugu State Executive Committee of the party, ahead of the expected defection of Governor Peter Mbah from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party.

A seven-man caretaker committee headed by the former state chairman, Ben Nwoye, was set up to steer the affairs of the chapter.

Following Ojo’s disqualification, only two aspirants – Governor Biodun Oyebanji and Omolayo Oluremi  – will compete for the ticket at the shadow poll.

The party’s screening committee, led by Tunji Olawuyi, had previously given Ojo a provisional clearance and referred his case to the NWC.

It also disqualified the fourth aspirant, Abimbola Olajumoke Olawunmi, following petitions against her.

The panel said: “This referral is necessitated by the weight of the petitions against him, particularly his failure to satisfy the mandatory threshold of five valid nominators per local government, and is intended to forestall potential litigation(s) that may arise from this deficiency which is inconsistent with Article 9(1) of the Constitution, which provides that only registered and financially up-to-date members of the party have the right to vote and be voted for, and Section 177 )c) of 1999 Constitution (as amended), which requires membership of a political party as a pre-requisite for eligibility to contest the Office of Governor.”

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Duro Meseko, told reporters at the end of the NWC meeting at the party secretariat in Abuja that the committee deliberated on the outcome of the screening of the four aspirants.

He said that two were cleared while two others were disqualified.

Meseko said: “The NWC at its 179th meeting also deliberated on the screening report of APC governorship elections. At the end of the meeting, the NWC cleared the incumbent Governor Abiodun Oyebanji and Mrs. Atinuke Oluremi Omolayo to go for the primary, to stand for the primary elections, while the two other aspirants, Engineer Kayode Ojo and Mrs. Abimbola Olajumoke Olawunmi, were disqualified.”

“The disqualification of these two people was predicated on the fact that they did not conform with the provisions of the constitution of the party and also the extant provisions of the electoral act.”

    Ojo: I respect NWC verdict:

Ojo, Pro-Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), said he accepted the judgment of the NWC, stressing that the party is supreme.

He however, expressed hope that the NWC will review his case so that he can be on the ballot during the primary.

    Enugu state committee dissolved:

On the dissolution of the Enugu State Working Committee,  Meseko said the decision of the NWC was informed by the need to bring lasting solution to the protracted crisis rocking the chapter.

He said: “In the interest of progress, peace, stability and tranquility of the APC in Enugu State, the State Working Committee, also known as the State Executive Committee of the party, stands dissolved, and a new caretaker committee has been put in place.”

Members of the Nwoye led caretaker committee include Mrs. Fidelia Njeze, Comrade Peter Chime, Dr. Mrs. Obie Ajih,  Dr. Chidoze Nwafor, Emma Ekeh, and Eugene Odoh, who will serve as secretary.

Meseko denied the insinuation that  the dissolution of the Enugu SWC was to pave way for the defection of the governor.

He said: “The party has been receiving new members. More governors are coming, and I can tell you that the dissolution of Enugu APC state exco has nothing to do with the defection of the governor.  Our action was for the peace and progress of the party.”

Meseko said the party’s reconciliation committee headed by Chief Bisi Akande and the Anambra State Governorship Campaign Council are  to be inaugurated soon.

He also said the public hearing on the proposed amendment to the party’s constitution will commence later in the month in the nation’s geo-political zones.

  • Ekiti APC primary: Ojo gets provisional clearance

Ekiti APC primary: Ojo gets provisional clearance

    • ‘NWC has final say’

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Kayode Ojo, has got provisional clearance to participate at the primary.

The provisional clearance followed his failure to secure the mandatory five nominators per local government.

The Screening Committee chaired by Tola Olawuyi has forwarded his case to the National Working Committee (NWC) for final ‘judgment.

Party members at the grassroots have urged the national leadership to disqualify him from further participating in the exercise.

The shadow poll scheduled for October 27 is likely to be conducted, based on the direct option. The election is next year.

Four contenders – Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Ojo, an engineer, Olajumoke Abimbola and Omolayo Oluremi – were initially competing for the ticket.

However, a contender, Olajumoke dropped after failing the screening, leaving three in the race.

Oyebanji was “cleared, having satisfied all constitutional and party requirements.”

While Oyebanji and Oluremi were given the nod to prepare for the intra-party contest, Ojo only got provisional clearance. His case is yet to be decided by the NWC.

Abimbola, who is active on the social media, is considered as a starter who cannot pass any popularity test in the chapter.

Two chieftains – Sunday Oladipupo (Igbemo Ward, Irepodun/ Ifelodun Local Government) and Amos Oladipo (Imesi Ward 5, Gbonyi Local Government) – forwarded a petition against her.

Unlike the governor who has been endorsed by the majority of party stalwarts during the statewide endorsement rally in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, and all the 16 local governments, many Ekiti APC leaders have also disputed Ojo’s eligibility for the exercise, alleging that he is not loyal to the platform.

Ojo’s battle cry has not attracted a mass following in the far-flung rural state, where only aspirants who know the language of the communities, and not those who uncritically flaunt wealth, have prospects.

Instructively in Ekiti, unity, identity, group conformity, and trust are built around that cultural aspect of life by the generality of unique people that relishes the virtue of ‘omoluabi.’

A lawyer, Yuletude Oghenekao Ako, stated in the petition to the chairman of the Screening Committee, Tunji Olawuyi, in Abuja on behalf of Oladipupo and Oladipo, that Olajumoke should prove that he is a “registered and financially up-to-date” party member who has the right to vote and be voted for at the primary.

Copies of the petition were sent to the APC national chairman, national secretary and secretary of the screening committee.

The petitioners alleged that while five members from each of the 16 councils should sign her nomination form, only 19 valid members signed, thereby failing to meet the threshold of 80 as expected.

According to them, “except in Ado Local Government with seven nominators,;she also did not satisfy the requirements of five nominators per local government in the remaining 14 local governments as contained in the guidelines.”

In their view, the aspirant should also prove that she has not misled the committtee with the information he furnished and that she fully complied with the rules, requirements and guidelines.

They said to safeguard the credibility of the screening process, the committee should disqualify Olajumoke from further participation in the exercise on three grounds.

The grounds, as alleged, are that she is not a bona fide party member; she was not duly nominated by the required number of nominators, and for the deficiency in her nomination form.

Olajumoke denied the allegations. But the committee reported that her name is not in the register of financial members.

Also, in a petition on behalf of Tayo Egunlusi (Iworoko, Irepodun/ Ifelodun Local Government) and Gbenga Osungbekun (Aramoko Ward 1, Ekiti West Local Government) by their lawyer, Sylvester Evbuomwan, the two party members urged the committee to disqualify Ojo from further participation in the screening and nomination process.

They alleged that Ojo failed to participate in the last membership revalidation exercise conducted in Ekiti between August 5 and 15, adding that consequently, his name does not appear in the verified Register of Members of the APC in the state.

To them, this has violated Article 9(1) of the APC Constitution which provides that only registered and financially up-to-date members have the right to vote and be voted for.

Also, the petitioners alleged that Ojo has persistently engaged in anti-party activities, pointing out that he has openly collaborated with opposition elements in Ekiti to “with a clear intent to weaken and destabilse the APC.”

They added, “This conduct is evidenced by his repeated public disparagement and unguarded outbursts against the leadership of the party.

“Furthermore, in flagrant violation of the APC Constitution, which expressly prohibits members from instituting legal proceedings against the partywithout first exhausting internal mechanisms for dispute resolution, Ojoinstituted court actions against the APC, following his lossain the party primary.

“Article 21 (2) (xi) of the APC Constitution stipulates that any member who files an action in court against the party or any of its officers without first exhausting the internal remedies shall be deemed to have committed an offence.

“Since the conclusion of the 2022 APC primary, he has willifully distanced himself from the party by refusing to attend, participate in or support APC activities at the ward, local government or state levels, including the membership revalidation exercise conducted in Ekiti State.”

The petitioners urged the screening committee and the party leadership to thoroughly investigate these allegations, particularly Ojo’s non-mwmbership status and record of anti-party activities.

They also said the panel should uphold the provisions of the party constitution , which eshrine loyalty, discipline and good standing as pre-requisites for party membership and participation in party affairs.

The chieftains said the committee should “disqualify Ojo from further participation in the screening process as he lacks the locus standi as s memmber and loyalty required as an aspirant on the platform of the APC.”

In his response to the petitions, Ojo denied non-participation in the membership validation and anti-party activities.

He insisted that that his nominators are financial members, although he could not provide a certified party register to substantiate their membership.

In its report, the committee is satisfied that Ojo’s name is in the validated membership register. However, the panel is not satisfied with his failure to provide credible evidence confirming the financial status of his nominators, a requirement fundamental to the validity of his nomination.

Ojo was therefore, granted “provisional clearance, with the final decision referred to the National Working Committee (NWC) for further consideration.

The committee said, “This referral is necessitated by the weight of the petitions against him, particularly his failure to satisfy the mandatory threshold of five valid nominators per local government, and is intended to forestall potential litigation(s) that may arise from this deficiency which is inconsistent with Article 9(1) of the Constitution, which provides that only registered and financially up-to-date members of the party have the right to vote and be voted for, and Section 177 )c) of 1999 Constitution (as amended), which requires membership of a political party as a pre-requisite for eligibility to contest the Office of Governor. “

Shortly after submitting his form while speaking to journalists at the APC National Secretariat Abuja, Ojo, the Chancellor/ Chairman, Governing Council, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, electrified supporters with promises like full local government autonomy, unprecedented infrastructure renewal, economic revival, and a new deal for teachers, civil servants, artisans, and students.

Ojo said he is certain of victory in the October 27 APC primary election and next year’s governorship election, and demanded a level playing field: “The people of Ekiti must be free to choose. We will not accept intimidation, harassment, or imposition. Only a popular candidate can win and I am that candidate.”

Ojo also vowed to secure Ekiti for the President’s 2027 re-election bid.

“This election is not just about who governs Ekiti, it is about who can mobilize the people for Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. I will stand with Tinubu, and together, we will elevate Nigeria,” he said.

Ojo also dismissed comments allegedly made by APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, that picking forms was a waste of money.

“The people of Ekiti are crying for change. Submitting my forms today is my response to their cry. We are ready. We are resolute. We are unstoppable,” he fired back.

  • Why Nigerians re-elected Buhari, by Ojo

Former governorship aspirant in Ekiti state, Mr. Kayode Ojo, has said the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in the just- concluded presidential election reflected the Nigerians’ will.

Kayode described the re-election as well- deserved victory for the President, saying the clear cut difference in governance gave him the resounding victory.

He disclosed another four years of Buhari’s leadership will provide the much-desired impetus for good governance, the ongoing war on corruption, completion of ongoing infrastructural projects and boost our new image in the comity of nations.

In a statement he personally signed in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, Ojo said Buhari’s victory was a demonstration of the confidence Nigerians have in his leadership.

“The reelection of President Buhari and his vice, Prof., Osinbajo is well deserved victory and confirmed the trust Nigerians have in the President in particular and APC in general.

“The results of the elections showed that Nigerians recognized the contributions of the APC controlled government to the development of the country within the past four years,” Ojo said.

The APC chieftain saluted the relentless doggedness and tenacious gestures demonstrated by the APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu for standing against all forces in ensuring the electoral victory of President Buhari.

He also hailed Governor Kayode Fayemi for successfully delivering the three Senatorial Districts and the six seats of the House of Representatives for the APC.

Ojo urged Ekiti people to maintain the tempo in the forthcoming State Assembly election in the State schedule to hold on March 9.

Similarly, a House of Representatives member-elect in Ekiti South Federal Constituency II, Hon. Femi Bamisile, also said the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari is as a result of the love and trust of Nigerian masses for the President.

Bamisile, who also congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said: “The victory of President Buhari at the just concluded presidential election was a true reflection of the masses love for him against the notion of few elites.

“Therefore, Nigerian democracy has grown beyond what it used to be, especially in the areas of transparency, fairness and credibility of the electoral process.

“Many big names couldn’t make it during the poll whereas unknown names won.

“The latest development has proved pessimists wrong on the Nigerian electoral process. Nigerians are now having more confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commision INEC ability to deliver acceptable polls”.

The former Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker noted that his experience during the on-going general elections had further broadened his knowledge on the value and importance of the electorate as the major players in democracy.

He said: “Politicians can now look down on voters at their own peril, but accord them the desired values and recognition through performance will surely guarantee you their votes to serve them.

“The beauty of the just concluded elections is that it will afford both politicians and electorate the opportunity to be more cordial and sincere in relationship in the game of politics,” he said.

According to him, his major priority at the lower chamber of the National Assembly will be, to contribute on bills and motions that will develop the country especially his constituency and Ekiti State in general.

“Many Nigerian laws are long over- due for a revisit inorder for them to have meaningful impacts on the lives of all Citizenry, hence all hands will be on deck to do the needful in this regard,” Bamisile said.

  • Scores injure as PDP, APC supporters clash in Ekiti

    * APC Accuses Senate Minority leader of instigating crisis

Supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the People’s Democratic Party on Monday clashed during a campaign rally in Omuo Ekiti, headquarters of Ekiti East Local Government Area, with no fewer than 20 persons sustaining various degrees of injuries.

The members of the APC were said to be holding a joint rally for the senatorial candidate in Ekiti South District, Prince Dayo Adeyeye and the House of Representatives candidate in Ekiti South Federal Constituency, Hon Femi Bamisile when the suspected PDP thugs invaded the rally and launched attacks on them.

Those who allegedly carried out the attacks were those loyal to the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi and senatorial candidate of the PDP in Ekiti South.

Some APC supporters, Adeniyi Saliu , Kayode Ojo and Adeniyi Ayo , who were victims of the attack sustained deep cut in the heads, back and stomach, had been referred to Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti for intensive medical care.

Another 15 others were said to have been wounded during the unexpected attack.

It was gathered by our reporter that those who committed the crime had fled the town and are now being trailed by the police for possible arrest and prosecution.

Former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly and an APC House of Representative candidate, Bamisile described the attack as unfortunate and a threat to democracy.

Bamisile said the desperation of some of the PDP members is nothing but an attempt to subvert democratic consolidation.

He, therefore, called on the security agencies in the state to apprehend the perpetrators of the latest ugly development in the area without further delay.

“APC as a party will not fold arms and watch its members be attacked by members of other political parties, hence the need for a strong warning to troublemakers to retrace their steps and allow peace to reign in the land.

“Nobody has monopoly of violence, therefore PDP members should be aware of that, and stop provoking peace loving APC members in the state”.

APC senatorial candidate and former Minister of Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, warned miscreants and political thugs planning violence and mayhem in the build-up to Saturday general elections to be careful or risk being sent to prison.

Adeyeye while reacting to the sudden wave of political violence and attacks on APC members in Omuo Ekiti said the long arms of law will catch up with political louts that were led by one Sunday Awolusi no matter how fast they run.

Prince Adeyeye said: “Arresting and prosecuting the suspects will serve as a deterrent to others inclined to political violence. I enjoin the security agencies to be on the red alert to curtail the overbearing influence of these political violence perpetrators.

“Ekiti is a peaceful state and nobody should turn it into theatre of war in the name of politics”.

  • Cultist’ threatens to ‘kill’ Lagos DPO

A suspected cult leader in Oworonshoki, Kayode Ojo, has been arrested for alleged threat to kill a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Lagos Ifeanyi Owo, a Chief Superintendent (CSP).

Ojo, said to be the leader of the Vikings in the area, allegedly vowed to kill the DPO if he failed to release a member of his gang arrested during a fracas.

It was gathered that the suspect made the threats through a hidden telephone number on October 11, around 9am, stating he would also raze the police station.

Owo was said to have alerted Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal of the threat, which prompted the command to declare a manhunt for the suspect.

It was learnt that Ojo was tracked to a hideout in Obawole in Fagba after police decoded the number and located same at 15 Fakeye Street, off Jimoh Yusuf Obawole, Fagba, Ikeja LGA.

According to Edgal, Ojo told the DPO he would not know peace, would be killed and the police station burnt.

Edgal said upon receipt of the threat, he directed the officer in charge of Anti-Kidnapping Squad to ensure the culprit was arrested.

He said: “Consequently, the squad went underground and deciphered the unknown number to be 07033719352 owned by one Austine Oghieh, 38. He was traced to 15, Fakeye Street, off Jimoh Yusuf Obawole, Fagba, Ikeja LGA, where he was apprehended. The suspect confessed to the crime.  On completion of investigation, he will be charged to court accordingly.”

In his confessional statement, the suspect admitted calling the DPO on phone over the arrest of a friend. He however denied threatening to kill Owo and denied he was a cultist.

Asked what the marks on his face represented, Ojo said they were tribal marks and not cult symbols.

Youths urge Bamidele to respect their rights

Youths in Emure-Ekiti, under the aegis of the Emure Youth Development Council, have urged a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele (Ifelodun/Irepodun), not to turn their community into a battle field because of his governorship ambition.

In a statement, the organisation’s President, Mr. Kayode Ojo, urged the lawmaker to play politics decently by respecting the wishes of the people.

Ojo said: “We believe the recent event by Bamidele in Emure-Ekiti, which led to the death of Mr. Foluso Ogundare, who is yet to be buried, is a good ground for him to let our people be, instead of creating a scenario that will deepen their pain.

“We see Bamidele’s choice of Emure-Ekiti as the venue of the declaration of his governorship ambition as insensitive to the pain of our people, more so, with the impression he is creating that Emure people do not have the human milk of kindness to deeply feel the pain of the loss of their illustrious son.”

He said the youths acknowledge the lawmaker’s right to contest any position he desires, but they do not want the community to be turned into a battle field by thugs.

The organisation said Emure-Ekiti is the stronghold of the All Progressives Congress (APC), “which has contributed to the community’s progress in various ways”.
