    Experts flay U.S. over Maduro’s, wife’s arrest

Former Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti and  Professor of International Relations, Kayode Soremekun, and the Director of Studies at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Prof.  Efem Ubi, have condemned the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife from their heavily guarded location in Caracas to face the American court system.

Maduro and his wife were immediately slammed yesterday with drug and weapon charges in New York, after being captured.

Reacting about the arrest in an interview with The Nation, Professor Soremekun said Maduro’s capture was a sign of the end times.

“It speaks to what can be called the current near unipolarity of the international system.

“This is because such a situation would not have been possible during the Cold War. But I’ve just read the announcement from the Venezuelan authorities, and they went into history to say that they’ve always had to contend with this big neighbour, i.e. Washington. And that is, according to them, the latest in the offensives of Washington in what can be called its backyard.

“It is also a reenactment of what can be called the Monroe Doctrine, whereby the U.S. simply sees its neighbours as puppets, as non-entities to be toyed with at will, which is a non-liberal order. Having said that, you also have to appreciate that in recent times, Venezuela has always been disposed towards Cuba, an arch-enemy of Washington. So, this is only to be expected under a post-Cold War warrior like Donald Trump.

“As it is, since in relative terms, there are no dynamics to this kind of offensive from Washington, because in an earlier era, the former Soviet Union would have been saying some things about what has just happened.

“And what it also means is that the only competing power to the United States at the moment, i.e. China, will now be free in relative terms to also annex Taiwan. So, you can see a game of hegemonies on the part of Washington on one hand, and Beijing, that is China, in the potential sense.”

The don argued that what saw with Maduro’s experience also was a relative recession and near-death of multilateral diplomacy, “because in the light of this unilateral offensive from Washington, one begins to ask, where are the United Nations? Where is the NAM, i.e. the Non-Aligned Movement? Where is the OAS, the Organisation of American States?” He submitted that what it means is that, for now at least, multilateral diplomacy is in recession.

“Gunboat diplomacy is now the order of the day, and the chief warrior, for better or worse, is Mr. Donald Trump. But this also has consequences, because in diplomacy, what you seek to do is to multiply your friends.

“This will not go down very well with a lot of countries in Latin America, because they know that if this can happen to Caracas, they can always ask, who is next?” Prof. Soremekun warned.

For Prof. Ubi, what the world witnessed yesterday was an aggression on the state of Venezuela for U.S. to invade and capture its president.

“That is the undermining of the sovereignty of Venezuela and its territorial integrity. In fact, it has also shown that we need a reform of the United Nations. We actually need a new organisation that will be able to maintain order.

“A country cannot just wake up and now invade another country, capture the president, and take the president to their own country. We cannot continue to live in a world where a single power is depicted, irrespective of the circumstances and irrespective of the international law that is in place.

“They don’t care. All they think about is their interests. If it means crushing heads, even if it means undermining states and their territorial integrity. This is uncalled for.”

Prof. Ubi argued that in the 21st century, the world should begin to think differently.

According to him, the world is reacting that what the United States did was totally wrong.

He added: “I think my take is that we should begin to look for an alternative world order where there can be justice, there can be equity, there can be respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and not for just one power to rise up and determine what should be in the international order. And so, multipolarity still stands out in our thinking of a new world order. Multilateralism also stands in terms of our engagement with the international community.

“Let the people of Venezuela be the ones to change the regime, and not for you to come tease the President by taking him to the United States. This is uncalled for.”

  • Drama as collation officer struggles with tabulated figures

There was a little drama on Monday as the Collation Officer for Ondo state, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, struggled to match correctly tabulated figures with the political parties.

The renowned Professor of International Relations on many occasions mixed up scores for political parties, prompting the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to ask him to go back.

  • ASUU kicks against ‘illegal’ recruitment at FUOYE

    VC: IT IS NOT TRUE

The Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU ), Akure Zone, has called for the investigation of alleged impunity by the management of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).

The union accused the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, of carrying out illegal recruitment and non-remittance of pension deductions to the staff of the university.

The umbrella body of university teachers berated Soremekun for giving room to admission of students the facilities in the university cannot
    cope with.

Addressing a briefing in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, Chairman, ASUU, Akure Zone, Prof. Olufayo, Olu-Olu accused Soremekun of violating the
university’s laws on recruitment, appointment and promotion of staff.

But Soremekun who denied all the allegations attributed the accusations by ASUU to what he described as “politics in the academia.”

The briefing was attended by the ASUU branch chairmen in the zone including Federal University of Akure (FUTA), Ekiti State University
(EKSU), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife and FUOYE.

Olu-Olu alleged that FUOYE authorities under Soremekun’s leadership have been recruiting workers and appointing academic staff without advertisement and without assessment by faculties and departments.

The ASUU zonal chair revealed that the authorities of FOUYE recently approved the appointment of a “Professor without PhD.”

Olu-Olu also condemned keeping some principals officers of the university in acting capacity for more than six months which he said violates the Universities Miscellaneous Amendment Act.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday at his office in Oye-Ekiti, where he dismissed all the allegations, Soremekun said all recruitment, appointments and promotions undergo due process and there was no illegal recruitment in the institution.

Soremekun noted that it is not all positions that must be advertised before being filled adding that the university recently received Certificate of Compliance from the Federal Character Commission for adhering to quit principle and following due process.

Speaking on alleged non-remittance of staff pension deductions, Soremekun said deductions are not carried out by the University authorities.

According to him, they are deducted from source at office of Accountant General and remitted to the Pension Commission (PENCOM), for onward delivery to staff members respective Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).

Shedding light on the appointment of a “Professor without PhD,” Soremekun said that particular law lecturer was given the professorial rank on the basis of his pedigree, erudition and requisite knowledge in the field.

Soremekun said: “In law, somebody can become a professor without holding a PhD, most of the older professors in law don’t have PhD, PhD is an instrument of intimidation.”

On the appointment of principal officers, Soremekun said the power to appoint them rests on the Governing Council and not in the Vice Chancellor.

  • Fayose, FUOYE VC trade words over alleged “rigging” plot

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Kayode Soremekun on Friday traded words over alleged plot to rig the July 14 governorship election.

Fayose alleged that Soremekun has lent himself to be used by ruling party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by recruiting students of his institution to serve as ad hoc staff at the poll rather than youth corps members.

The governor alleged that Soremekun is a card-carrying member of the APC and a close ally of the party’s governorship candidate in the forthcoming election, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. He alleged that the VC had rigged elections for the APC in the past.

Fayose who spoke with reporters in Ado-Ekiti on Friday alleged that over 2,000 FUOYE students had been registered as ad hoc staff under Soremekun’s watch and allegedly ordered to supply bank details of their close relations so that payments would not be directly linked to them.

But Soremekun who denied involvement in any plot to rig the forthcoming election described Fayose’s allegation as a “blatant falsehood” said INEC is the agency in charge of recruiting ad hoc staff for the purpse of elections.

The Ogun State born university administrator who also denied being an APC card-carrying member said this would not be the first time that Fayose had attempted to blackmail him.

The FUOYE boss said Ekiti governor had attacked him over his refusal to do assist his (Fayose’s) party (PDP) at the September 2016 Edo State governorship election where he (Soremekun) served as the chief returning officer.

Soremekun also recalled that Fayose had cried to the whole world that he (Soremekun) would be used as the chief returning officer for the November 2016 Ondo State governorship election and released his phone number to the public to occupy his line adding that he did not serve in that capacity eventually as the governor had alleged.

Fayose said: “The idea behind this plot is to recruit APC members from neighbouring States, arm them with FUOYE students Identity Cards and use them as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers to perfect the planned rigging of the election. This will fail.”

“Today, we are beginning to receive signals to the effect that clandestine moves are being made to subvert the will of Ekiti people.

With the failure of their “Ondo Option”, other evil means are now being devised.

“Despite that we have over 9,000 Youth Corps members in Ekiti State and it has been the general practice to engage the NYSC members in elections across the country, the APC in collusion with INEC have asked that students of FUOYE be recruited as INEC ad-hoc staff for the election, instead of youth corps members.

“We are in possession of an Internal Memorandum from the office of the Dean of Students Affairs, FUOYE seeking registration of students of the University as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers for the Election.

“As I speak, over 2,000 supposed FUOYE students have been registered; with a curious condition that they should provide Bank Account details of their close relations, apparently to avoid tracing any payment into their own accounts.

“The question is; with over 9,000 Youth Corps members in Ekiti State, what is the need for FUOYE students in an election that is holding in less than 2,200 polling units?

“Our counsel is that parents, guardians and families of FUOYE students should prevail on their wards to shun this Greek gift and avoid being used by desperate politicians.

“INEC, too, must come clean on this. The electoral umpire must tel the public the rationale behind the plot to jettison Youth Corps members for supposed FUOYE students.”

Soremekun fired back: “What Governor Ayodele Fayose has accused me of is a blatant falsehood. In a post colonial setting like Nigeria and especially Ekiti State, elections are like war and in any war, the truth is usually the first casualty.

“Having said that, am I the one to recruit students for elections or the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“I am not in charge of recruiting adhoc staff for INEC, they are the one in charge of that. Politics is the only industry in Ekiti land here.

“I also heard that governor Fayose said that two days ago (Wednesday) I was in Abuja with ex Governor Fayemi on this same matter.

“But again, I have concrete proof to the effect that two days ago I was in Oye trying to put down the fire occasioned by student’s unrest. You know about this and it was even in the papers.

“So, how could I have been in Oye and in Abuja at the same time. Let me also say that this is not the first time that Governor Fayose would be treating me like this.

“In the run up to the last Ondo governorship election, you will recall that Governor Fayose said I would be the returning officer foe INEC wanted for the election and that I had a rigging template because I was the returning officer in Edo State.

“It is true I was the returning officer then but the loser of that Edo election went to the court, the tribunal, Appeal and Supreme Courts and he lost.

“As much as possible politicians should not try to drag me to their mess. Governor Fayose will win or lose based on his prior performances in office.”

NANS urges FG to invest more on education

…Hails FUOYE’s VC on infrastructural development

The National Association of Nigerian Students ( NANS ) has called on the Federal Government to provide adequate funding for the education sector.

The National Public Relations Officer of the student body, Comrade Odebunmi Idowu made the appeal in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

His appeal comes in wake of the government’s plan to declare an emergency in the sector in April.

Idowu noted that no nation can develop without paying adequate attention to its education, adding that as a nation, Nigeria must begin to give priority to the sector.

“We cannot afford to continue to do the same thing and expect a different result. No nation can progress with such mindset. We need to put efforts together to move the nation’s education sector forward,” he said.

He commended the Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, over the massive infrastructural development going on at the university.

Idowu said that NANS observed during its assessment tour of the institution that Prof. Soremekun had credibly acquitted himself in running the affairs of the university.

He said: “We need to put efforts together to move the nation’s education sector forward.

“As custodians of Nigerian students, the National Association of Nigerian Students wishes to use this press release to sound a warning to some bad eggs trying to sabotage the VC’s effort in making the university great.

“We took this position after an on-the-spot assessment of the university. NANS commends Prof. Soremekun for the rapid pace of evident development to meet the felt needs of the university and Ekiti community and Nigeria by extension through the training of well-rounded graduates to innovatively meet specific industry/market place needs.

“We want to use this opportunity to call on other administrators of academic institutions in the country to glean invaluable lessons from the disciplined, dedicated and transparent manner which the Vice Chancellor has administered the affairs of the institution.”

He appealed to the federal government to release more funds to the institution for further projects.

Idowu urged other administrators of academic institutions in the country to emulate the disciplined, dedicated and transparent manner which Prof. Soremekun is using to administer the affairs of the university.

“We want to use this opportunity to call on other administrators of academic institutions in the country to glean invaluable lessons from the disciplined, dedicated and transparent manner which the Vice Chancellor has administered the affairs of the institution.

“If all administrators of our universities follow the steps of Prof. Soremekun, our universities would be a reference point in Africa and globally. We encourage other VCs to copy the good development strides going on at FUOYE and ensure they replicate same at their institutions,” he added.

FUOYE tasks SUG on good leadership

The authority of the Federal  University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), has charged the institution’s pioneer Students Union Government (SUG) to exhibit good leadership style and support the university management to enhance development.
The vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, gave this charge on Monday at the inauguration of the SUG executives at the university’s auditorium, Oye-Ekiti, Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti.
According to the vice-chancellor, leadership carries a great degree of responsibility and leaders can only function effectively with the support of their followers.
“There should be a functional relationship between leaders and followers as leadership cannot be an island.
“As you are inaugurated today, do not stay too far from the ‘market’; that is the students you are leading; imbibe the spirit of a responsible leadership.
“Maintain a peaceful and conducive learning atmosphere between the management and the students you are leading.
“Listen to your followers’ agitations, especially those ones, who will bring about the desired development,” Soremekun said.
He, however, told them that he operated an open door policy, in which he was prepared to deliberate with people on developmental issues at all times.
In his address, the pioneer SUG president, Mr Taiwo Fasakin, promised to partner with the university’s management and other organisations to foster development during his tenure.
He pledged to make the good use of the vice chancellor’s open-door policy to ensure that students generally and the university management enjoyed a good working relationship as well as sustain a conducive academic environment.

FUOYE students don’t study under trees – VC

The Vice-Chancellor of  Federal University, Oye-Ekiti  (FUOYE), Prof. Kayode Soremekun, on Wednesday dismissed a report that students on  the Ikole  campus of the institution  were studying under trees.

The vice chancellor, in a statement issued by the spokesman of the institution, Mr Godfrey Bakji, described the report as  false and misleading.

Soremekun said apart  from the structures he inherited,  he had  made unprecedented efforts  in improving the state of facilities and constructing new ones.

The report entitled, “We study under trees’ was published on Tuesday in a national daily.

Soremekun, however, said:  “I wish to dismiss this statement as not only misleading and false, but a deliberate attempt to malign the integrity of the institution.

“Aside from the structures I inherited, I have made unprecedented efforts  in improving the state of facilities and constructing new ones.

“This is borne out of my thirst for rapid growth and development of the institution.

“In less than a year of my stewardship, I had  attracted 19 new academic programmes and two more faculties to the young institution,” he said.

The vice chancellor said a resource verification team comprising officials from the National Universities Commission, JAMB and Federal Ministry of Education had visited the institution before approving the programmes.

“This is to ensure that FUOYE has commensurate facilities to accommodate the new faculties as well as the intending candidates.

“The resource verification team scored the young FUOYE high, hence its approval.

“ Therefore, one wonders why any student would say they study under trees in FUOYE, most especially on the Ikole campus that accommodates  only two  out of the seven faculties,’’ he added.

Soremekun  also said  his administration was  simultaneously developing both the  Oye-Ekiti and Ikole-Ekiti campuses in order to make the university a world-class institution.

“It is worthy  to mention that the institution is ranked 14th by the National Universities Commission in 2017.

“This feat could not have been achieved without commensurate sacrifice by the vice chancellor to create conducive learning environment for students and workers respectively.

“I can assure you that Ikole campus will not be sidelined,’’ he said.

VC raises alarm over overstretched facilities at Federal University, Oye Ekiti

Prof. Kayode Soremekun, the Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Oye Ekiti, on Friday lamented the increasing number of students seeking admission to the university.

Soremekun said the management was taking steps at solving the challenges to both human and infrastructure and cope with the surge.

The vice chancellor spoke while presiding over his first and the 6th matriculation ceremony of the university.

He said it was his delight that the number of those seeking placement in the institution had doubled since he took over mantle of leadership about a year ago.

Soremekun, however, said his major concern was the limited facilities which the students had to contend with, but added that the university was taking pro-active measures to tackle the challenges.

According to him, a total of 3,000 new students were admitted, making it the highest since the university was established by the Federal Government few years ago.

He listed areas where efforts were being made to improve facilities on campus to include water, medical, lecture rooms, hostels as well as alternative power supply through solar arrangement.

“We are curtailing the surge by building more laboratories and expanding our frontiers in the area of basic facilities

“In realisation of the fact that government alone cannot shoulder all responsibilities in the education sector, we are also setting up a Revenue Generation Board to assist us in shoring up our internal revenue base.

“The board, when in place, will help explore opportunities in areas such as bakery, water production, distance learning, consultancy as well as post graduate programmes, among many others,’’ he said.

Soremekun enjoined the newly matriculated students to face their studies squarely by shunning all social vices.
