THE Federal Government is working to increase the monthly allowances paid to corps members, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director-General Brig-Gen Suleiman Kazaure has said.

He said the increase would be done in line with the approved minimum wage for civil servants.

Brig-Gen Kazaure spoke at an orientation programme for Batch ‘A’ Corps Members in Ebonyi State Orientation Camp.

The DG, in a statement in Abuja by NYSC’s Director, Press and Public Relations, Adenike Adeyemi, announced an increase in local and transport allowances paid to corps members.

According to the statement, the transport allowance for each corps member has been increased from N1, 500 to N1,800.

The local allowance has been pegged at N1,400 as against the N1, 000 earlier paid to them.

Kazaure, who urged the corps members to avoid all forms of social vices like drug addiction, armed-robbery, prostitution, fraud, among others, encouraged them to live a responsible life as worthy ambassadors of their families and the NYSC Scheme.

The NYSC boss warned them to avoid lone movements and dangerous terrain that may expose them to danger.

Kazaure, at the Obubra Orientation Camp in Cross River State, warned corps members to cut down on travelling and night parties during their service year.

Kazaure gave the warning while addressing corps members.

The DG urged the corps members to always respect the culture of their host communities with a view to foster good working relationships.

At Sagamu orientation camp, Ogun State, Kazaure said the NYSC would not post corps members to any crisis area.

  • MDAs prohibited from rejecting Corps members – Kazaure

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier General Suleiman Kazuare has said that government Ministries, Departments and Agencies should not reject Corps Members posted to them as this violates the government.

The DG stated this during the 2018 Corps Employers Workshop at the Education Resource Center in Abakaliki.

He also warned that the scheme will not spare any Corps Employers or other persons aiding and abetting absenteeism and abscondment from service by Corps members.

According to him, efforts at curbing absenteeism and abscondment is being frustrated by some Corps Employers stressing that this would no longer be tolerated by the scheme.

“Let me remind you that a susbsisting circular from the Federal Government Ref: No: SGF. 15/T/ 90 dated 13th November 2008 which directs that Government Ministries, departments and Agencies (MDAs) should not reject any corps member posted to them”.

“We have increased the number of regular inspection of Corps Members at their places of primary assignment while ensuring that absentee Corps Members are sanctioned. The scheme will not spare Corps Employers and other persons who may be found liable in aiding and abetting absenteeism and abscondment from service by Corps Members.”

Kazuare who was represented by an Assistant Director at the National Directorate of NYSC in Abuja, Mrs. Grace Ugo Enege urged government establishments and corps employers to make budgetary provisions for the welfare of corps members rather than rejecting them.

He also disclosed that the scheme have recorded great success in the online registration and clearance of corps members stating that this have further stemmed evasion of service and other unwholesome practices by the corp members.

In her address, the Ebonyi state NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Illuebbey Regina said though Ebonyi is very hospitable to corps members, more still needs to be done by Corps employers as part of their sacred obligation to create a conducive environment for the cops members to enable them render selfless service to the country.

It is a known fact that corps members are adequately motivated, they perform excellently well in their duties. In view of the forgoging, it is also necessary to remind ourselves that corps members being mostly non-indigenes in the state of service need and deserve bountiful hospitality from their host communities to optimally discharge their duties.

She said that the challenges of evasion of rejection, under-utilization and evasion of service need to be tackled for the improvement in the delivery of youth based intervention.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Ebonyi state and State Chairman, NYSC Governing Board, Charles Akpu-Enika called for punishment of employers and officials who conspire to cover up corps members who are not on ground.

“This ugly trend has negated the principles and practice of the service year as a platform for graduate Nigerian youths to offer one yearof unbroken selfless service to the Nation. I do hope sincerely that this is no longer the case as it is an aberration which must not be condoned”

  • El-Rufai seeks more funding for NYSC

El-Rufai seeks more funding for NYSC

Gov. Nasiru El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Wednesday called for improved funding for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to make it function effectively.

El-Rufai made the call when the leadership of NYSC, led by its Director General, Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure paid him a courtesy visit in Kaduna.

Kazaure is in Kaduna for a 3-day pre-orientation workshop for the 2017 batch ‘B’ corps members.

The governor said the scheme should be properly funded as it serves as avenue of exploring the country’s diversity and strengthening its unity.

“So, whatever the NYSC scheme needs to successfully take care of corps members, for them to go wherever they want to be in Nigeria, should be fully funded.’’

The governor however frowned at situations in which corps members refuse postings to places they had never been to in the country.

“From what I hear, many young people now don’t like going to states other than where they will be comfortable.

“They think places where they have never been to are hostile communities and they don’t want to go there.

“But I will like to use this medium to appeal to our young people to be adventurous.

“NYSC will make you go to places you have never been because that is how you will know more about Nigeria.’’

El-Rufa’i advised the NYSC management to do more in posting corps members to areas new to them.

“This is what I will like to see the NYSC do, instead of fixing postings; just allow the computer to post people based on where they have gone to school,’’ he said.

According to him, posting corps members to where they have never been to was the only way to bring young Nigerians together so they can understand the nation’s problems and challenges.

El-Rufa’i thanked the management of NYSC for choosing Kaduna as venue for the national workshop and expressed the hope that the forum would boost the economy of the state.

He added that the development was an indication that the security situation in the state had improved.

Earlier, Kazaure said the choice of Kaduna State, to host the event, was in appreciation of the support and hospitality the scheme enjoys from the government and its people.

The director general assured that the scheme, under his leadership, would continue to build on its solid foundation, as well as come up with initiatives that would promote national integration.

  • Association identifies lands for date palm cultivation in Jigawa

The Association of Date Palm Growers in Jigawa says it has identified over 15 parcels of land that are suitable for date palm cultivation in the state.

The Chairman of the association, Alhaji Abubakar Yakubu, said this on Tuesday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse.
He said that the identified lands were in Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim, KafinHausa, Dutse, Gumel, Gwaram and Birninkudu Local Government Areas of the state.
Yakubu said that the lands were suitable for date palm growing because of their wet nature.
“These lands we identified are very good and suitable for the production of date palm because they are wet lands.
“In short, when date palm is growing on them, you don’t need to water it and we considered this as cost saving.
“And we identified over 15 of such lands in some local government areas of the state; we are hoping to find more,’’ he said.

Yakubu, therefore, called for the intervention of the federal and state governments in efforts to develop such lands in order to boost date palm production in the state. He also urged the federal and state governments to include date palm growers in their agricultural development programmes, so as to provoke mass production of the fruit.

Yakubu stressed that the government support for date palm growers would encourage production and exportation of date palm fruits. He said that this would further improve the socio-economic lives of people, particularly the residents of the areas where the date palm was grown.
He said that the government’s intervention would also enable date palm producers to learn modern techniques and skills to boost their activities.
“Since the two governments promised to develop agriculture, we therefore call for the expansion of their agricultural support programmes to include date palm production.
“Such support is essential to enable us to produce in large quantity and export,’’ he said.
Yakubu also called for the training of the date palm producers in modern preservation techniques to encourage the production of “hygienic fruit’’.
He, however, commended the Dutse Date Palm Sub-Station of National Institute for Palm Oil Research (NIPOR) for supporting the date palm growers in the neighbourhood with improved seedlings and other inputs so as to boost their productivity.

NAN reports that date palm is widely grown in Jigawa, while its capital, Dutse, which is known for different species of date palm, has a large population of date palm growers.
