  • Iran seeks bilateral relation with Kebbi

    The Iranian Ambassador to Nigeria, Saeed Koozochi, has said his country is ready to explore bilateral relationship with the Kebbi State government in the economic and scientific sectors as well as foster cultural ties between people of the two countries.

    The Ambassador spoke at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi when he led a group of Iranian businessmen alongside the Ambassador of Nigeria to Iran, Amb. Tukur Mani, who visited Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.

    Amb. Koozochi said both Iran and Kebbi people have the same religion in common and the people of Kebbi State and his country share the same faith.

    “This gives room for the achievement of economic, scientific and cultural ties to set goals.”

    He said his country was attending an international exhibition organised between Iran and Nigeria with over 50 Iranian companies and industries showcasing their products from fields of industrial, construction, aviation and pharmaceuticals.

    “With support from the Kebbi government we can achieve our target in investment in the state,” the envoy said.

    Governor Bagudu expressed his satisfaction about the visit, pledging the state government’s cooperation. He noted that Kebbi is peaceful and full of opportunities for investors.

    “The state has the widest agricultural belt in Nigeria. It can supply sugarcane for the production of sugar for Iran and Nigeria. The young people of the state are willing to go into entrepreneurial activities. “The state also has large deposit of limestone for cement. So Kebbi is ready to partner investors in order to boost our economy.”

    The Iranian delegation has already engaged in bilateral discussion with the Kebbi State government on cement manufacturing, agriculture, water resources, construction, town planning, and has scheduled to visit Argungu fishing village.

  • Kebbi: Govt faults Speaker’s impeachment

    Kebbi State government has reacted to the impeachment of Alhaji Muhammad Shalla as speaker of the state House of Assembly, describing the it as illegal and unconstitutional.

    In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State government, Garba Rabiu Kamba and made available to newsmen , the SSG explained that it was a faction of the members comprising of 12 persons out of 24 members that convened the meeting, knowing fully well that the House was on recess.

    He stated that, “the government of Kebbi State was aware that Aminu Musa Habib Jega was removed as Speaker of the House of Assembly on 27th November, 2014 of which they went to Court challenging their removal from Office, asking to court to regard the decision as unconstitutional.”

    He said further that, “By this very act the purported members have pre-empted the decision of the Kebbi State High Court, these members aimed to cause disaffection and truncate smooth transition of government following the recent Election.”

    The SSG also added that the State Government is awaiting the judgement of the High Court and as such the action of the members is illegal and unconstitutional.
    He said the government will continue to recognise Alhaji Hassan Muhammad Shalla as the State Assembly.
    He therefore called on the general public to be law abiding and continue their daily activities.
    He said the government has put in place measures to ensure there is no breach of peace while security agencies have been instructed to take proactive measures to maintain law and order as well as securing the peace of the state.

    Kebbi lawmakers serve Dakingari impeachment notice

    Members of the Kebbi State House of Assembly rose from their emergency meeting yesterday with a resolution to impeach Governor Saidu Usman Dakingari. The lawmakers constituted an impeachment committee, which drafted six-count impeachable offences and served them on the governor.

    Dakingari has just one month to end his tenure.

    The charges against the governor were signed by a simple majority of the Assembly’s members and copied to reporters in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

    The lawmakers accused Dakingari of violating the provision of Section 5(1)(a) of the Kebbi State Budget Monitoring and Price Intelligence Bureau Law, 2008, whose chairman is supposed to be a retired civil servant.

    The notice said: “But you (Dakingari) appointed Aminu Usman as the Chairman of that bureau while he is (still) the Permanent Secretary/Solicitor-General of the State Ministry of Justice, and hereby committed a gross misconduct.”

    The second charges reads: “You, Dakingari, obtained a loan facility to the tune of N2 billion from Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Support Fund, set up by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) without obtaining necessary confirmation from the House of Assembly.”

    The third charges says: “You also violated Section 7 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), which enjoins you to ensure the existence of democratically elected local government areas, but you continue to work with unelected local governments in the state.”

    The fourth charges reads: “Between January 2015 and April 2015, you misappropriated N1,800,862,872 from the Kebbi State Government’s funds in the name of then general elections of 2015 and there is no provision for that expenditure in the Appropriation Law, 2015.”

    APC’s Bagudu wins Kebbi guber election

    Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State, Senator Atiku Bagudu, has won the state’s gubernatorial elections.

    Aside Bagudu, almost all APC House of Assembly candidates also won their elections.

    The APC won 19 out of the 21 Local Governments in the state leaving only two for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Gen. Sarkin Yaki Bello.

    Kebbi comprises of 21 LGs.

    The results were announced by the collation officer for the governorship election in the state, Prof. Lawal Mohammed.

    The PDP won only two LGs.

    The APC won the elections landslide.

    According to Lawal the total registered voters in the state are 1,454,369 out of which a total of 873,542 were accredited vote.
    He stated that the total valid votes were 778,364 while the number of rejected votes was 34,875 bringing the total vote cast to 813,239.

    Bagudu polled 477,376 votes to defeat PDP’s Gen. Bello who scored 293,443 votes.

    The results of the governorship elections in Kebbi State declared by Professor Mohammed in Birnin-Kebbi last night are as follows:

    Official governorship election results declared in Kebbi State so far, show that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Atiku Bagudu, is far ahead of his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rival, Gen. Sarkin Yaki Bello in 14 Local Government Areas.

    PDP has only won in Bagudo LGA so far.

    Kebbi comprises 21 LGAs.

    Accreditation begins on time in Kebbi, Kaduna

    Accreditation of voters commenced on time in parts of Kebbi and Kaduna states following early arrival of election officials.

    The officials were mostly at their polling units by 7:30 am and accreditation started by 8 am.

    In Kebbi the turnout of voters was far lower than what was witnessed during the presidential polls on March 28.

    In Kaduna however voters turnout was generally impressive.

    NAN reports that accreditation started as early as 8am in most polling units of Argungu Local Government in Kebbi.

    Some of the polling units visited in Argungu include Alwasa, Asarara, Gotomo, Race course, Sarki Sani Model Primary School, Garkan Danmaliki and Kitarawa 4.

    The situation was similar in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, where election officials were out as early as 7:30am and accreditation commenced on time.

    Some of the areas visited included Garkan Maialelu,Joda one and two, Nasarawa one and two, Gulumbe, Badariya polling units among others.

    In all the places visited security personnel were present and the streets were empty of vehicular movement.

    In Kaduna metropolis, Kafanchan, Zaria and Birnin Gwari the accreditation of voters also commenced on time with large turnout of voters.

    At Kafanchan A and B, Garaje, Maigizo and Mabushi polling units where the process started peacefully, voters turnout was impressive.

    In Kaduna, voters in long queues were being accredited in most polling units including Unguwan Liman, Burji, LEA Katsina Road, Ori Akpata, Shaba, Alimi, Alkali Road in Ungwan Sarki and Jemaa Road in Ungwan Rimi.

    In Zaria accreditation also started on time with large turnout of voters in Gyallesu, Kwarbai, Kofar Kona, Tudun Wada and other polling units in the area.

    CAMPUSLIFE man is best Corps member in Kebbi

    A CAMPUSLIFE man, Akintomide Akindotun, has won the Kebbi State Governor’s Award for best Corps member during the passing out ceremony of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) held in Birin Kebbi.

    Akintomide, a graduate of Welding and Fabrication Engineering Technology at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun, Delta State, is one of the three outstanding Batch “A” Corps members in the state.

    He was honoured for his good conduct and several life-changing Community Development Service (CDS) projects he initiated in his host community.

    Akindotun, who served in Kanta Unity College, Argungu, said he felt the pulse of the residents of his host community to confront the challenges facing them, hinting that he was inspired to alleviate their suffering by keeping their children in schools and enlighten them on accident prevention.

    Some of the project carried out by Akindotun included designing and erection of road traffic signals on major roads, public sensitisation programme on the use of road, which was organised in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), distribution of writing materials to primary school pupils, campaign on mass literacy and girl child education, and corrupt practices, among others.

    Governor Saidu Dakingari, represented by the permanent secretary of Ministry of Economic Planning, Alhaji Abubakar Idris, presented the state award to the Corps member at the governor’s office. The occasion was witnessed by the NYSC coordinator, Alhaji Abdullahi Yusuf, among other dignitaries.

    Akindotun dedicated the award to God and his colleagues reporting for CAMPUSLIFE.

     

  • Buhari, APC sweep Kebbi

    The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has won the election in Kebbi State with a landslide.

    He emerged winner in the 21 local governments with a total vote of 567,883 of the 677,003 valid votes cast.

    The standard-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Goodluck Jonathan, lost to Gen. Buhari with a total vote of 100,972.

    The APC candidate for Kebbi North, Dr. Yahaya Abdullahi, polled 139,197 votes to defeat Governor Saidu Usman Dakingari of the PDP, who scored 70,148 votes, while Senator Adamu Aleiro garnered 216,084 to beat Abubakar Gari Mallam of the PDP, who polled 68,792 votes in Kebbi Central Senatorial Zone.

    The APC candidate for Kebbi South, Bala Ibn Na’Allah, also emerged victorious even as the APC candidates for the House of Representatives seats won.

    According to the Kebbi State Presidential Election Returning Officer and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) of Uthman Dan Fodiyo University, Sokoto, Prof. Mohammed Lawal Ahmadu, the total registered voters in the state were 1,457,763 of which 792,818 were accredited to vote.
