KELECHI IHEANACHO: Sevilla treated me with respect

Contrary to reports in some media platform, Nigeria and Middlesbrough on loan player Kelechi Iheanacho, said he enjoyed the support of the coaching crew and management of Sevilla. The Nigerian international returned to England after a short spell in Spain amidst speculation that he wasn’t treated well.

    TREATED WELL IN SEVILLA

“I enjoyed my stay with Sevilla,” Iheanacho stated from England through one of is associates. “They treated me well and I’m still their player and hope to return to Spain after my loan here in England.”

He said contrary to speculation that he didn’t fit into the team, he said he was doing well in training and had mutual talk with Sevilla management to loan him out.

“My coach (Francisco Pimienta) is happy with what I was doing in training and knows my ability. He told me that I’m new and needed time to understand the team. He said whoever plays up front has to do well.

“When I had to move on loan we sat down together and it was a mutual talk and agreement,” he added.

Back in September, Pimienta also backed Iheanacho informing that he was doing everything to fit into the team. “Everyone, whpoever plays up front has to do well. Kelechi is a proven player. The other day he had a difficult game because he came on without warming up. Just like the rest he has to take a step forward because he has the quality to do well in Sevilla.

“The boy is training very well. I know it seems like an excuse, but he didn’t do the pre-season with the team.

The team already had pour concept; we had been training together for almost two months. It was hard for him to adapt. He has a player in front of him who is clear about it, who gives us a lot of things and is doing well.”

    HOMECOMING

However, Iheanacho has described his loan return to England from Europa League specialist Sevillaas homecoming.

His transfer from Leicester to Sevilla last season has been cut short after half the season, as he was let out on loan again to the Championship side.

Iheanacho’s announcement as a Boroplayer marked the end of their business in the January transfer window as the deadline closed last Monday night.

Speaking from Middlesbrough, the Nigerian international is over the moon on what he tagged ‘homecoming’ to England where he had spent the greater number of years in his career so far.

Iheanacho moved to England in 2015 fresh from the Nigerian cadet team and transferred to Leicester City in 2017, where he spent seven years before moving onto Spain. He views his loan return to the Championship and England as a sign of good thing as he has helped Leicester gained promotion to the Premiership last season.

“It was good to move away and experience a different environment. They produce a great atmosphere there and it’s another great club. I loved my experience there, it’s a great team. I’m here now though, and focused on what I can achieve here.

“England feels like home now and I’m buzzing to get started. I had the experience of the Championship with Leicester last season and it was obviously a good one. I played against Middlesbrough as well, but didn’t manage to score! But I’ve played in the league and know how it is.”

“I think that will help me get started right away. I’m feeling ready to go. I’m not big on setting targets, but collectively, as a team, it is to get back to the Premier League. Obviously, it’s one step at a time, but hopefully we get there. We’ve got a good group of lads here, a good team, and hopefully, we can work together to achieve that goal,”

Additionally, Iheanacho was relieved to be back in England, the country where he made a name for himself, winning the English Community Shield, FA Cup, and the EFL Championship.

He added: “Obviously, there are good coaches here and a good team. I’ve played against the club a good few times so I know it’s a really good club. I spoke to the manager and he was a really nice guy. We discussed everything from training to games and how he wants the club to move forward. It was clear that the goal is to get to the Premier League, which was good. I can’t wait to get started.

“We (himself and Boro coach Michael Carrick] spoke about everything, training, games, how we’re going to move forward. Hopefully, we’ll get through to go to the Premier League, that’s the goal.

The FA Cup winner returns to England on loan until the end of the season, looking for back-to-back promotions from the Championship to the Premier League after Leicester’s triumph last season. The Nigerian is joined on Teesside by Samuel Iling-Junior from Aston Villa. The 21-year-old joined Villa from Juventus in the summer and spent the first half of this season on loan at Bologna.

Morgan Whittaker also arrives on Teesside following a move from Plymouth Argyle. The winger made his debut against Sunderland.

Mark Travers made his Boro debut in Monday’s fixture. Despite the late goal, the Irish shot-stopper had a solid game. The headlines were instead given to fellow loanee Ryan Giles whose unlucky touch beat Travers to decide the tie.

There was a number of outings at the Riverside, with winger Isiah Jones departing to join Championship strugglers Luton Town. Jones and Latte Lath had a combined 42 goals for the club. Matt Clarke left for Derby County after falling out of favour in Michael Carrick’s back line. The 28-year-old returns to Pride Park where he spent two seasons on loan during the COVID-19 seasons.

George Edmundson made his loan permanent after being temporarily recalled from Ipswich. The centre-back signed a two-and-a-half year contract. Meanwhile, defender Tommy Smith has announced his retirement from football on Wednesday morning. The full-back made over 350 appearances and nearly 50 on Teesside. His decision came following his ruptured Achilles in October 2023, ruling him out of playing since.

Championship club Middlesbrough have revealed Kelechi Iheanacho‘s squad number ahead of a possible debut next week.

Middlesbrough completed the signing of the Nigeria international on transfer deadline day in the winter window, but the deal was not completed in time for him to be part of the squad for the Championship clash against Sunderland at the Riverside Stadium.

In search of adequate playing opportunities, Iheanacho has joined Middlesbrough for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season, on loan from Sevilla.

His preferred shirt number is 14 which he wore for five seasons at Leicester City and remains his choice while representing the Super Eagles internationally.

The 2013 Fifa U17 World Cup Golden Ball winner sported the number 72 at Manchester City.

  • Middlesbrough agree Iheanacho loan transfer

    Middlesbrough agree Iheanacho loan transfer

Kelechi Iheanacho transfer decision made as Victor Orta agreed sale of the Sevilla  striker  to English Championship club, Middlesbrough.

A return to English football by former Leicester City man Iheanacho has been rumoured throughout January and now with just hours of the transfer window remaining, it looks like rumour may prove to be fact, well part of the rumour anyway.

According to Spanish media El Desmarque, Iheanacho is all set to appear in the Championship promotion fight but not at Leeds United as had previously been suggested in some quarters. A deal for Iheanacho to go to Leeds was a non-starter from the beginning hence  no offer was made for the player, one whose wages would have been a significant outlay, even more so for a player who has not shown the type of form you’d associate with such an outlay.

However, it appears Middlesbrough do not share those same concerns and according to the Spanish press, ex-Leeds United Director of Football Victor Orta has agreed a deal with another of his former clubs for the sale of Iheanacho.

There had been some suggestion Saturday that Scottish giants Celtic would enter the fray for his signature. Iheanacho is already in England  according to El Desmarque, to finalise a loan move to the Riverside Stadium for the rest of the season.

Sevilla coach Garcia Pimienta has said Iheanacho does not have a future at the La Liga club after he struggled to impress in the first round of the campaign.

Last season, Iheanacho, 28, featured in the Championship to help Leicester City win promotion back to the Premier League.

English Championship duo, Panathinaikos queue for Iheanacho

EFL Championship sides Sheffield United and Watford as well as Greek giants Panathinaikos are the three  new clubs that have joined the fray to sign Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho from Sevilla before the close of the January window.

Iheanacho joined Sevilla in the summer as a free agent amid pomp and ceremony  but has failed to impress at the club despite his years of experience  playing at the top flight in England.

The 28-year-old  has failed to find the back of the net in nine La Liga games for Sevilla and has been left out of their last four league games.  But the former Leicester  City striker has notched three goals from two appearances in the Copa del Rey.

Meanwhile, Sheffield and Watford have reportedly  created a path for the Super eagle’ forward  to return to England via the championship route while Panathinaikos are said to have  also opened discussions with the former  Manchester City forward.

Sevilla will not be standing in the way of the Nigerian if he decides to leave, as he joined them on a free transfer. Leeds United are also one of the clubs that have shown interest in the Nigerian.

Iheanacho will be seeking a team where he will be able to clock good playing time and a league with visibility, as he sets sights on representing Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

  • Sevilla set to offload Iheanacho in January

Sevilla set to offload Iheanacho in January

Sevilla may look to offload Kelechi Iheanacho in January following his struggles in the opening four months of the La Liga season.

The Nigeria international ended a 10-year stay in England when he left Leicester in July to sign for the Palanganas on a free transfer.

However, the move hasn’t quite panned out yet as Iheanacho has failed to score in seven top-flight appearances for Pimienta’s side, with his only two goals coming against lower-league Las Rozas in the Copa del Rey on October 30.

The Andalusian outfit are amongst the lowest scores in the league with 13 goals from their opening 14 matches and they have been linked with Gremio striker Martin Braithwaite.

Spanish sports publication Estadio Deportivo asked Sevilla Sporting Director Victor Orta about the possibility of bringing Braithwaite to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan and was met with a simple answer of “no”.

Orta has reportedly decided that Iheanacho has no future in Seville and is hoping to ship him off on loan back to England to a Championship club.

The 28-year-old striker spent last term in the second tier of English football, where is bagged just five goals in 23 games as the Foxes won the title.

  • Sevilla coach to unleash Iheanacho, Romero on Las Palmas

Sevilla coach to unleash Iheanacho, Romero on Las Palmas

Sevilla  coach García Pimienta has enthused  about  the possibility  of  putting forward  the attacking pair of Kelechi Iheanacho  and Isaac Romero in his side’s  La Liga opener away to Las Palmas.

The Nigeria International who joined Spanish club on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Leicester City, had an indifferent season  with the Foxes  the last term  scoring six goals in 26 matches in all competitions, as his club managed to achieve the EFL Championship, securing promotion back to the Premier League.

Yet  Pimienta  believes  that  the pair of  Iheanacho  and Romero who  four goals in 14 appearances  last season,  can make things happen for Sevillistas this term, adding  the team’s  defence  is at the ready as he  tinkers  with  the attacking  ahead of this  opener  against Las Palmas.

“I’m not 100% on the starting line-up,” Pimienta told the club’s media. “ I have an idea in my head. I won’t know until the last moment, people are ready.”

He continued: “ We have almost everyone ready in the defence, I’m not going to make excuses.

“I do see the possibility of playing Isaac and Iheanacho together.

“The ideal position for both of them is up front and we are working on being able to play with both of them, as well as Peque,” he added.

This season, there would  be a lot of  Nigerian interests  at Sevilla  with  the signing of  both Iheanacho and Ejuke Chidera Ejuke by the Spanish outfit.

Incidentally,  Nigerians would have the benefit of seeing  the Super Eagles stars  in the La Liga  with confirmation that  StarTimes will broadcast all 380 La Liga matches on its Sports Premium channel as well as on StarTimes-ON App and Sports Life.
