The midfielder turned 18 last month and will sign a five-year professional contract with the EPL giants later this month.

“Nwakali is not in Arsene Wenger’s immediate plans and it will take some time before his application for a work permit is processed. Therefore, it is most likely he will be sent out on loan possibly to a club in Belgium,” a source close to the player told africanFootball.com.

Nwakali was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) when Nigeria won a record fifth FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile in November last year.

Nwakali, who clocked 18 years earlier this month, is still with the Nigeria U20s , and the coaching staff led by Emmanuel Amuneke and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will have to give the go-ahead before he travels to London for his official unveiling.

“Kelechi is no longer our property. We can’t decide when he’ll travel to London. No one knows the mind of Arsene Wenger.  Arsenal needs him urgently but we want him to play for Nigeria.

“The coach and the Nigeria Football Federation will have to decide on that,” Amajiriaku added.

Wenger confirms Arsenal’s interest in Eaglets duo

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that the English Premier League club is in advanced discussions to sign Nigerian youngsters, Kelechi Nwakali and Samuel Chukwueze.

The Frenchman said the club identified Nwakali “as a top player” at last year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, supersport.com reports.

He added that deals for the pair is still not concluded as “talks are progressing well” and hopes the club lands both players in the current transfer window barring “work permit problems or medical issues.”

“Talks are progressing well. There are work permit issues. There are medical issues, because they have to make medicals. It’s progressing well. We identified Nwakali as the player of the tournament (at last year’s FIFA U- 17 World Cup), basically, and as a top player.

“We will see if we can manage to get it over the line during this transfer period. (If we can), we will do it. Chukwueze is (signing) as well,” supersport.com quoted Wenger as saying at a press conference on Friday.

Arsenal remain front-runners to land the Nigerian pair despite earlier interest from German giants Bayern Munich.

Nwakali, 17, was named the best player at the tournament which Nigeria won.

Chukwueze got a bronze boot for his impressive performance for Nigeria after scoring three goals and weighing in with three assists at the cadet World Cup.

Arsenal offer £6m for Nwakali, Chukwueze

English Premier League side, Arsenal, has offered a total of £6million for Nigerian youngsters, Kelechi Nwakali and Samuel Chukwueze.

The youngsters, who shone at last year’s FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile in November, are expected with their guardians and academy officials in London this month to complete the transfer to the London Gunners, africanFootball.com reports.

“Kelechi (Nwakali) will cost £3.9million, while £2.1million is for Chukwueze,” a source told africanFootball.com.

“This is the full package including training compensation to the players’ academy and what have you.”

Last year, Nwakali’s agents demanded  £4million from another EPL side, Manchester City, after he underwent trials at The Etihad.

City officials felt the player was overpriced and did not follow up on the deal.

Kelechi’s older brother, Chidiebere is on the books of City and his own transfer three years ago cost over £3million.

  • KELECHI NWAKALI – I LIVE FOR FOOTBALL

KELECHI NWAKALI – I LIVE FOR FOOTBALL

It would be stretching the truth a little to say that Nigeria playmaker and captain Kelechi Nwakali has two FIFA U-17 World Cup trophies under his roof. His older brother, now with Manchester City, also struck gold with the Nigeria U-17 team two years ago.

“I was in the pre-World Cup training squad in 2013 but I didn’t make the squad that went on to win the trophy,” he explained in an interview with FIFA.com. “My brother Chidiebere was there, though, and of course I felt proud and happy for the other players.”

Nor did Nwakali have the opportunity to travel to the United Arab Emirates to cheer on his brother, a defender who contributed two goals to the Golden Eaglets’ triumphant campaign. Explaining why, the younger of the two Nwakali boys said: “I had to train at the academy and it would have been impossible for me to go. I didn’t have any contact with him during the tournament because he had to focus on playing. Obviously, I watched all the games on TV though.”

Eighteen months younger than his sibling, Kelechi was not even at home to welcome the returning hero, with football once again the culprit: “I was away playing in a tournament and I only saw him a week later. We spoke about everything and he said that what drove him on the most was his desire to make the people of Nigeria happy.”

So what is driving the No10 on at Chile 2015? “Winning. We came here to retain the trophy. We want to win the title and we haven’t come for anything less.”

    A born leader

It is no surprise that Nwakali should mention coach Emmanuel Amuneke, given the key role he plays for the Nigeria boss on the pitch: “I am sort of his right-hand man because he usually gives me instructions to pass on to the rest of my team-mates. And I think that is one of the key things that make me tick is hard work and the ability to listen to your coach and you give 100 per cent, you get your rewards. We’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point.

Yet, as Nwakali went on to explain, as soon as the whistle sounds, Amuneke lets the players take control: “The coach always tells us that when the game starts he can’t be on top of us all the time. He encourages us to think for ourselves and to make our own decisions.”

Rare is the moment when Nwakali is not thinking about football. “It’s been that way since I was 11,” he said. “When I’m not on the pitch, I’m watching matches on TV or playing football games on my phone.”

His role model is Yaya Toure: “I love watching him play because he loves to win. That’s all he wants. You can see it in the way he plays, the way he runs and even in the way he walks on the pitch.”

Though Nwakali is still at the academy where he learned his trade, he has hopes one day of going on to bigger things: “I want to play for a side that’s going places, like Manchester City.” Should he do so, he would be following in the footsteps of brother Chidiebere, who has signed for City and is currently on loan with Spanish side Girona.

Talking of his older brother again, did he get any advice from him before setting off for Chile? “None. We’re close but he’s got his own career to think about. We haven’t even spoken about it and nor will we. Just as he did two years ago, I needed to concentrate on what I was experiencing in Chile. I had to focus on improving so that we can be champions. And thank God we achieved our goal.”

He was quick to point out that the biggest challenge they faced in the competition was Mexico in the semi-final. “Since the tournament began, we’ve always opened the scoring in our matches, but that wasn’t the case against Mexico. As captain, I tried to motivate my players as best as I could, telling them to wake up and that the game was far from over, even though we were a goal down. It worked fine because we came back to win the game at 4-2. There is no doubt that Mexico were our most difficult opponents. I thought their two forwards, the No9 (Eduardo Aguirre) and No10 (Claudio Zamudio), were very good players. They really gave us the run for our money.”

Happy to be back home with the trophy and inspired by the red-carpet reception lined out by the Nigeria Football Federation, Nwakali, once gain looked back at the final game against Mali; “They’re the current African champions at U-17 level. But we’re the reigning U-17 world champions. We’re not afraid of them at all, but we do respect them and realise that they will be worthy opponents. With that at the back of our minds, we were ready for the game. It came out well at the end of it all. Our objective here in Chile has been accomplished. We are back home with the trophy. We’ve done what is needed to be done to make that possible. I just want to go back home, and reflect on what we’ve accomplished, and then I’ll give some thought to my next career move.

Eaglets’ quartet invited to Dream Team

Four members of the World Cup winning Golden Eaglets squad – Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Nwakali, John Lazarus and Udochukwu Anumudu have been called up by Samson Siasia to join the Nigeria U-23 team ahead of preparations for the 2015 African U-23 championship billed for Senegal.

The quartet played key roles in the Golden Eaglet’s victory at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile, Goal reports.

Having secured the consent of the Nigeria Football Federation, Siasia said their invitation is a reward for hard work and a proof that they can progress to the senior cadre.

“I have been monitoring the progress of these boys while the team was being built by my brother, Emmanuel Amuneke,” Siasia told Goal.

“Don’t forget we were in the same hotel and used the same pitch to train and I have been impressed with what I saw them do in Chile, so I think what I just did was rewarding them for a job well done.

“Their invitation is only to tell other players that they too can progress to the senior cadre if they are level headed and keep working on their game.

“For me age is not a factor, if they can give me what I want, then they will be part of my team to Senegal. But they must justify their invitation for no player in my team has automatic shirt,” he concluded.

The players will join the team in Gambia after staying with their families for a week.

5.7m Euros deal: Man City haggle over Kelechi Nwakali

Allnigeriasoccer.com has been informed that English Premier League moneybags Manchester City are haggling over the €5.7 million transfer fee placed on the head of Golden Eaglets skipper Kelechi Nwakali.

The Citizens have been tracking the performance of Nwakali since the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations and invited him to England after the tournament in Niger Republic to be shown around the club’s facilities.

If City had initially hesitated to sign the 17 – year – old, those doubts were ended once and for all after the teenager was awarded the Golden Ball at the 2015 FIFA U- 17 World Cup.

This website understands that his Nigerian Academy have inserted some performance – related clauses into the proposed contract that stipulates that Manchester City will fork out a hefty sum to the nursery team if Kelechi Nwakali makes his debut for the first team.

West Ham are the other English Premier League club being linked with a move for the central midfielder but are certain to lose out if it comes to a bidding war, given the financial muscle of the Etihad outfit.

Nwakali found the net three times in Chile, including two goals from the penalty spot.
