  • Imo PDP Chieftains fight over Atiku’s visit

    …my ambition driven by patriotism-ex-VP

Chieftains of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) including former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, former Minister of Aviation, Kema Chikwe, member of House of  Representatives, Jones Onyereri, among others Wednesday clashed at the glass house office of PDP Board of Trustee (BoT) member, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu over the visit of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.

The aggrieved PDP Chiefs engaged Iwuanyanwu in a shouting match after he requested to have a closed door meeting with the visiting former Vice President who was on a courtesy call in his office before meeting with PDP stakeholders in the state.

Kema was particularly furious over Iwuanyanwu’s demand, describing it as embarrassing and selfish.

According to her, Atiku was in the state to consult with PDP members and should not be hijacked by anybody.

Shortly after the fracas which lasted for over 30 minutes, Ihedioha, Kema, Onyereri and their supporters stormed out of the meeting. All efforts to placate them by Atiku were abortive.

Meanwhile, Atiku told journalists that the desire to move Nigeria forward has sustained his desire to be the President of Nigeria.

The ex VP who came in the company of the Director General of his Campaign Organization and former Governor of Ogun state, Gbenga Daniel and other members of his campaign team, said that he had the solution to the litany of challenges confronting the country .

According to him, “patriotism is the key thing; it is the thing propelling my presidential ambition. I want to move Nigeria forward; patriotism is needed to move Nigeria forward.”

He said he was in the state to consult the leadership of PDP in the state ahead of the party’s presidential primary.

Responding, Iwuanyanywu said that he will not retire from politics until Atiku became president.

The elder statesman stated that the country was in dire need of a leader like Atiku to develop the country.

Iwuanyanywu said “I will not retire from politics until Atiku Abubakar becomes president. Atiku is the kind of President Nigeria needs. There is poverty in the land because of bad governance supporting Atiku is the best thing to do.

“Igbo has been marginalized in this government and sadly some Igbo people are still supporting Buhari.”

  • PDP panel to discuss name change, bring back defectors

The national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has inaugurated a contact committee for the purpose of aligning with other political parties ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The committee, which is headed by a former governor of Cross River State, Mr. Liyel Imoke, will also explore the possibility of tinkering with the name and insignia of the PDP.

Some key stakeholders, particularly prominent chieftains of the PDP that defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014, are said to have insisted on a change of name, as one of the conditions to rejoin the PDP.

Prominent among among the APC chieftains being wooed by the leadership of PDP include the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki; former Kono State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; his Sokoto State counterpart, Aliyu Wamakko; and former Gombe State Governor, Danjuma Goje. Incidentally, all of them are prime members of the Senate.

Overtures are also being made to woo the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. Tambuwal had defected from PDP to the APC at the tail end of his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Many serving APC members in the two chambers of the National Assembly are also said to be waiting in the wings, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Investigation further revealed that the high profile politicians are being wooed with tickets for choice offices, including the presidential slot.

But the heavy baggage of corruption trailing the PDP has made it difficult for prospective defectors to cross over from the APC and other political parties.

A prominent chieftain of the PDP confided in our correspondent on Friday that indeed, the major task of the committee is to make wide consultations regarding the propriety or otherwise of name change.

The source, who did not want to be named said, “Yes, we are seriously concerned about the issue of name change, as being demand by some of the intending returnees.

“But I must let you know that not all of them are assisting on name change because they can see through the veil of deception in the APC government’s anti-corruption campaign”.

Our correspondent further gathered that the leadership and key stakeholders in the PDP may have narrowed the search for the party’s presidential flag bearer to only two individuals -a serving governor and a serving senator from the same geopolitical zone.

The two politicians are believed to have enough political cloud to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari’s pre-2015 cult-like followership, particularly among the masses in the Northwest geopolitical zone.

While inaugurating the committee on Friday, the national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus said the party would do everything within the confines of the law to regain power in 2019.

Secondus said the past three years of President Buhari’s administration had convinced Nigerians of the need for a credible alternative in 2019.

The party chair tasked members of the committee to reach out to Nigerians and groups on the need to forge a common front for what he described as the “political salvation” of the country.

Secondus said, “Your committee and your nomination into it is a well-articulated decision of the party leadership to bring our open door policy to fruition.

“Just as your name connotes, you are to deploy your well versed network to help open the space and allow into our party, all those whose union with us can help in rescuing this country.

“Like we always say in this party, this umbrella is big enough to accommodate all people of patriotic ideals”.

The committee chairman Imoke promised to work tirelessly to deliver on the mandate, stating that the situation in the country has become too dangerous for well-meaning Nigerians to fold their hands in resignation.

Other members of the committee include former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido; his Niger State counterpart, Babangida Aliyu; and former Benue Governor, Gabriel Suswam (Benue).

Others a former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Paul Orhii; former Aviation Minister, Kema Chikwe; and a former national chairman of the PDP, Bello Haliru Mohammed among others.

  • Kema Chikwe turns 70

Former Aviation Minister, Kemi Chikwe, turned 70 two weeks ago and held a party to celebrate the occasion. She was one of the first women to gain prominence in the Fourth Republic, rising to the position of Minister of Transport and then that of Aviation in the Obasanjo administration.

Since then, she has been a low-key player in the political game. But she took the opportunity of her 70th birthday to gather her family, friends and associates together to eat, drink and reminisce.

Her musician son, Naeto C, and his wife, Nicole, graced the Abuja event alongside singer AM and his nephews, Asika and Asa, among other guests.

Chikwe is one woman who has accomplished a lot in the Nigerian political landscape. She has served the country as its ambassador to Ireland and she is currently the National Woman Leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party. Kema is also an author and scholar, having contributed to several books, especially in the area of education.

She has a doctorate in Curriculum Education from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

  • Kema Chikwe resurfaces

Former Minister of Aviation, Mrs Kema Chikwe, is reputed for carrying herself with the grace of a feline. And beneath her soft demeanour lies a voice of imperious command.

The National Woman Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been quiet of late. Unlike before when her presence was a sure bet at celebrity parties and society gigs, the mother of ace rapper, Naeto C, now flits in and out of the social radar like a landmass out at sea intermittently obscured by fog. To find her at such ceremonies these days, one would require the skills of a top-level investigator.

But a goldfish cannot hide for long. A few weeks ago, Chikwe was spotted at a Lagos wedding bash, looking like a young beauty. Garbed in royal blue and in company with her singer son, the former aviation minister enjoyed herself throughout the wedding.

That Dumebi Kachikwu’s marriage to Kema Chikwe’s daughter, Somachi, crashed after a brief stint a few years ago is no longer news. What appears to be agitating the minds of actors in the social scene is Dumebi’s unusual absence.
