  • KENNY BLAQ: Punches past the poor economy with ‘Oxymoron’

Kenny Blaq is a house hold name in the comedy section of the entertainment industry. In this interview with OLADIMEJI ADEWALE and BELLO ADEFEMI, he opens up on the thrills and challenges of being one of the youngest stand-up comedians in Nigeria.

ARGUABLY the most popular stand-up comic out of Nigeria in the last couple of years, Otolorin Kehinde Peter has carved a niche for himself in the industry. His unique style of infusing popular music and satire into his performances earned him the most sought-after spot in comedy. When asked how he discovered his style, he says: “I’ve always been the songbird of the family and community. Whenever everyone else sang popular songs, I found myself singing them the wrong way with joy… Sometime in 2008, people around me suggested that I do comedy with singing. I can’t even crack regular jokes on stage.”

Kenny never wanted to do comedy, he always wanted to be a musician but as fate would have it, he’s a musical comedian. He admits that in the beginning, he tried so hard to look the funny part to push his new found craft by wearing funny colour combinations and sunglass frames (without lenses). This continued until 2010 when he had to, according to him, “wear a suit” to anchor a wedding where he was paid N3,000. At that point, he knew he had to get serious about his craft.

On breaking into the mainstream, he recounts a story of how recommendations got him this far.

“I had been going for events at the MUSON Centre, been on comedians’ platforms until one day I went to Ibadan for Gbenga Adeyinka’s for ‘Laff Mattaz’; apparently, I wasn’t supposed to perform at the event. When the invited people didn’t show up, I was added to the line-up. My performance evoked a standing ovation for the first time. After the event, I met with Ali Baba and he gave me his contact. A couple of years later, they did January 1st event and they said they were looking for me that day, but I didn’t have money to get to the event. I can say the Ibadan event gave birth to me performing at Ali Baba’s January 1st event and many others like AY live, Yaw’s Salanga and doing other comedy shows led to other events.”

His popularity and the energy he brings to the stage hasn’t always brought ease to his profession. Kenny Blaq is mostly headliner and as such, the final act at most events and he sees it as both a blessing and a curse.

“At the level I am at the industry some event planners use me to end shows. I’m called upon when the event is ending and the audience are tired of laughing, so I tend to do extra work to make the audience laugh again. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed, other times it’s great to see my pieces being appreciated. At times like these, my professionalism sets in. I fall back to the drawing board, try to manage time and thrill the audience.”

Being around Kenny Blaq can be distracting even for the most experienced journalist, he switches between being serious and being a comedian pretty easily that he was asked if he’s planning to get on the Nollywood bandwagon like his progenitors.

“Yeah, I really want to do movies. Soon I will be appearing in movies, but only in movies that matter. I’m a huge Jamie Foxx fan. I don’t want to be in all movies, only movies that matter. I will like to do a musical movie like Tyler Perry’s movies. I haven’t seen scripts that motivate me yet, I want movies that’ll be known for the truth.”

His M.A.D. (Making A Difference) band members were at his apartment when we got there and preparations for the day’s rehearsals were underway and Kenny Blaq had this to say about organising events in Nigeria: “Organising events in this country is crazy. From renting the hall, to ticketing and rehearsals, if one is not careful, one can run mad. I really challenged myself with the first Oxymoron. Instead of starting with a smaller hall at Eko Hotel, I used the main event hall. Motivational speakers can push you into trouble saying “if he can do it, you can too”. I went with that until reality dawned on me; it is not about just saying it but putting to test my faith and real hard-work on the part of the team. My major issue was trying to convince sponsors for this year’s event as most of them had invested in the just concluded World Cup in Russia. We’ll have a great show regardless, thanks to the sponsors we were able to get.”

We probed further about what to expect at his forthcoming sequel happening on July 29 at the same venue, he invites us to experience it because his description wouldn’t do justice.

Earlier in the year, Kenny reacted to a question about his romance life and his response was “Being a comedian, it is difficult to get someone who loves me.” When asked if that was an excuse, he said: “I wasn’t in any dating relationship before getting into the entertainment industry. The reason being that no one thought I was a serious person. My funny characteristics didn’t allow me to be a date material. Now, people don’t see Otolorin Kehinde, rather they see Kenny Blaq. I’m not in any relationship, except with God.”

The current economic hardship in the country is also a big concern to Kenny Blaq and he’s lending his voice alongside other comedians in trying to ease the stress of the populace through humour. He thinks the government should do more to aid the entertainment industry.

“We should have companies or government bodies that sponsor entertainment shows. Like BOVI said, ‘comedy is stronger than politics’. Politics is boring without entertainment, leave it or take it. If the politician wants to catch fun they need entertainers. Nigeria government needs to invest in entertainment. Because entertainment is what strengthens Nigerians, Nigerians are our own jokes.  We make jokes out of serious issues, things we should be angry about, we wrap jokes around them. Thanks to the comedy clubs coming up now, if you are stressed and upset about the economic situation, you can drive to comedy clubs and laugh away the stress.”

When we asked if he had gotten his Permanent Voter Card, he smiles and confirms that he has, but admits he doesn’t know who he’ll vote for just yet. Again we revisit his career and how he intends to compete on the global stage acknowledging the fact that he’s had a number of shows in the U.K. and the U.S. He’s excited about the prospect saying:

“Yes oh! Recently, I have been writing more jokes in English. In our country when you speak too much of English, you rarely connect, you still need to balance it with the local dialect (pidgin). I have been trying to imagine myself performing for a white and if I need to do that I have to develop content relating to the white people. It would not mean I’d be changing my narrative from being a Nigerian, but as a Nigerian bringing Africa to America.”

He’s preparing to leave for an appointment, so in a hurry we ask what his advice to other young comedians who are trying to catch a break in the industry is. His advice is simple: “Pray and work hard at your craft.”

  • KENNY BLAQ Why I used to dress like Baba Suwe

KENNY BLAQ Why I used to dress like Baba Suwe

Otolorin Kehinde Peter, popularly known as Kennyblaq, a.k.a God’s grace ambassador, currently is the reigning king of the comedy industry. With the new style of using music to crack jokes, the comedian, in this interview with DUPE AYINLA-OLASUNKANMI, speaks on how he discovered the new trending style of delivering jokes, among other issues.

    WHY music comedy?

I have always been a fan of music. I started as a backup singer with a Yoruba band in 2004.  All I wanted to be was a musician, but then I realised that when I hear a song I always want to sing it the other way round.

So in 2008 I said to myself if I was going to ever do comedy they must know that I can sing too.  That was how I started writing my jokes with music.

Where have you been hiding all the while?

I have been working, and trying to make sure I don’t hide under the shadows for too long. So I have been in my room watching standup comedy shows and going for some local shows.

You see I have not been hiding really; let’s just say I have been working on building the Kennyblaq brand.

    And who discovered you?

I will say one of my uncles. His name is Ezekiel, popularly known as P. famous. He saw the gift and gave me my first platform in 2008.

You seem to be the reigning comedian at the moment?

I don’t know about that but if that is true I feel honoured and I give God all the glory.

Tell us how you feel about your success story

I feel blessed. Sometimes when I am alone, I just look back at how I started and all I can say is to thank the Lord for His grace.

I remember when I wanted to go for my first international show last year Easter and I was refused visa, I cried. But today I have performed and also received awards as ‘Comedian of the Year’ in Egypt and Malaysia.

I have also been to the same country I was refused visa more than once. I just finished my Europe tour, and presently in the United States of America for my USA tour. I feel blessed to be God’s grace ambassador.

What was your first experience like on stage?

It was crazy; I didn’t know what to say. Back then I was a clown; I used to dress like Baba Suwe. I was shaking and people were laughing; since it was comedy I turned it to a joke like “omo, the way everybody dey look only me, na him make me dey shake oo. E be like say una won beat me.”  They laughed so hard and that was all I could say but I had fun.

I came back home with joy in my heart and all I was saying for a week was “they laughed.”

How did you feel when three top comedians; Ali Baba, Okey Bakassi and AY came out to introduce you at one of his shows?

Hmmmmm, that I call an experience I will cherish forever. I did not see it coming, it was like a dream because I have never seen them do that to any comedian before.

But I was scared because with that hype I needed to give my best so they can be super proud of me. The audience were waiting after the introduction to see if what they actually said was what was about to happen.

I thank God because not only did the audience give a standing ovation, they sprayed me pounds and dollars too.

Ali Baba, Okey Bakassi and AY, I go dye, Klint the drunk, and all the comedians present at the event, came up to me and said, “Kennyblaq, welcome to your success story page 1.” It is a day I will never forget.

How do you intend to continue to thrill your fans?

It is going to be continuous had work.

Comedians usually recycle jokes; don’t you feel you might run out of ideas later?

I am not God, so I don’t know what will happen later. But for now, ideas come every day, all I need is you to keep praying for me (pray for more grace to do exploit).

    Any regrets so far?

All I count is joy presently.

Would you change your style of music, if the need arises?

I am not sure and I don’t have any plan to do so soon.

What do you mean by this statement, “I’m a virgin so I don’t know what s3x is”?

I read it in a book.

Tell us the life of being a twin

Sweet ooooo. Chai, you know you have that someone you can tell anything. My twin sister Otolorin Taiwo Hannah is my second mummy.

Are you thinking of settling down soon?

Haba no ooo, school is there and the brand also still needs to get better and better.

Tell us the concept behind ‘The Oxymoron of Kennyblaq’, slated for July

It is all about comedy but this time it’s going to be musical. You know how I do my thing; I am a story teller, so I am going to be uncovering some stories behind some of the songs you listen to.

How long do you think you can last on stage, with your kind of style?

I think I can do 1hr. I am planning to do that on July 23, at Eko Hotel, for the ‘Oxymoron of Kennyblaq’.

Which would you describe as your worst show?

I learn from every show, good or bad; so I am not sure I have any at the moment.

Are your parents cool with your choice of career?

They are; they see me as a relief to Nigeria in this time of trial.

What are your plans not to fade out with time?

Always put God first, and then work endlessly.
