Kennyblaq denies pioneering music comedy in Nigeria

Comedian Kennyblaq has clarified his role in the music comedy genre, debunking claims that he pioneered the style.

In an interview with Hip TV, Kennyblaq credited the late Gbenga Adeboye, CD John, and others for laying the groundwork for music comedy in Nigeria.

While acknowledging his contributions to the genre, Blaq emphasised that his approach brought a fresh, modern vibe, likening it to the styles of Wizkid and Davido.

He highlighted his unique blend of music genres, storytelling, and consistency as distinguishing factors.

“Because of the way I did music comedy, a lot of people have the impression that I brought music comedy to Nigeria. Some people think that I started music comedy as a genre.

“But they were music comedians like the late Gbenga Adeboye, Fung Otong, MC Miracle, Maleke and late CD John. But I think what made mine different is my approach towards it.

“I brought the Wizkid and Davido vibe into it. And I was able to do different genres of music with my comedy.

“Those who did music comedy before me, did a particular style of music comedy. They were either doing Igbo or Yoruba music.

“But I was doing mashup, covers, and I was telling stories and I was consistent with it.

“I did not start music comedy but I can say that I’m one of those that have made music comedy strong in this part of the world”, he said.

  • kenny blaq: My dream is to work with Tyler Perry

Otolorin Kehinde Peter, popularly known as Kennyblaq, who revealed that plans are on for his 10years on stage, and known for his unique way of turning music into comic relief to the delight of his audience, in this interview with DUPE AYINLA-OLASUNKANMI, speaks on delving into movies, plans to feature in an international movie, among other issues.

DO you have it planned out to go into music too?

I do not think I have plans to have a record label, which is also some kind of investment in the entertainment sector. I have a management company. Basically, what we do is artiste’s management and pushing artiste to the front where they get record labels sign them up. Get shows and put up shows for them. It is basically branding for upcoming artistes who are skilled and need to be pushed to achieve their dreams.

Tell us about your educational background

I went to Effortwill Schools Ejigbo. So along the line, I changed to Gold Vessel Nursery and Primary school, where I wrote my common entrance. After secondary school, it was time to further, but I wanted to take entertainment seriously. At the time, there was really not much money to further. So I picked up a form at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in basic presentation and I am returning to study journalism.

Why do you want to return?

To acquire more knowledge; I am done with presentation and I will touch production at some point in time. I don’t want to put my eggs in one basket.

You do comedy with music; have you released any song out?

I released a song on September 30th on my birthday; I will be dropping a single. It is not a real song, but a kind of appreciation to God for all he has done. It coincided with my first solo show in London at the Indigo 02 tagged State of Mind produced by Smade Entertainment.

Aside from music-comedy, what other plans do you have?

I am going into movies soon. I have spoken to some people. I don’t want to do the old school; I want to do the advanced Nollywood. I have been getting scripts; I just did a movie with Wale Adenuga Productions. I did another with Femi Adebayo on The Return of Jelili. My plan is to do movies outside the shores of Nigeria. I am a big fan of Tyler Perry, so I am looking for a movie that involves music that we can work together.

How long have you been doing comedy?

Let’s see, I will be doing The Oxymoron of Kenny Blaq – 10 years on stage edition soon. I started my comedy August 9th, 2008. We had 1000 in audience, only 10 people laughed; I can never forget that in my life. But we thank God, we are here today. Officially, I have been doing comedy for about 10years.

How has it been for you as a comedian?

Consistency is the main thing. You have to bring out new materials, especially in Nigeria where you bring out a joke today and it is already on YouTube. And when you do it for different audience and they put it on the internet, you get criticism from people who say it is the same thing. But I am grateful to God that we have been able to sustain it and it shows that we put in more work into what we do. It is challenging creating new jokes all the time for different audiences. But for me, I think one of the major challenges was my height. People recommended me for children’s party, which made me realise that you don’t judge the book by the cover.

Has your background had any effect on your career?

Yes, it did in a lot of way. I grew up in a hood where nobody believed in the fact that you are too young to make it. It is believed that it is when you get to a certain age that you can start making it. There is this mentality that if you don’t get involved in yahoo and the likes, you cannot make it. I grew up in that area where people believe that if you are pursuing your talent; you are wasting your time. But I am proud of whom I am today, that I have been able to affect people positively. I wasn’t able to speak too fluently, which is why education is very important. Entering FRSC really helped me; I was able to understand the diphthongs and everything.

Tell us about your style of comedy

I wanted to be different from other comedians. And because I wanted to do music before comedy, I didn’t even know where comedy came from. Comedy came from the ‘window’, while music came from the right door. I started singing on stage from the age of 12, where I joined a Juju band back then where we go to sing on stage. So I have always wanted to have a band. I find myself turning songs around and singing them the way I am comfortable with them and people laugh. So I said to myself I have a way of making people laugh, so somebody came to me and asked if I could do it on stage, so I went on stage and did it for the first time and they started liking it. Though not everybody liked it initially, they began to like it and that was how I discovered it was my selling point. So when people are cracking their jokes, I am singing my jokes. And people are able to remember me easily.

Where do you see Nigerian comedy in some years from now?

It is getting there. Netflix came to Nigeria to interview some of us and I was honoured to be part of those that were interviewed. They came to Ejigbo, my hood, to run an interview for me; a 15-minute special.

And I think that is good for me and the comedy industry. We are having more stand-up comedy show. Like a one-man show to show the strength of the comedian. To show that a comedian can go like five-10 hours to do their own specials. I also want to thank the king of comedy Ali Baba, who has introduced the spontaneity competition, meaning that you can be creative with anything to sustain you. I see Netflix and other content buyers coming into the comedy industry fully in Nigeria to buy specials. And I see us creating our own platform to sell comedy specials. Where you know the app to use when you want to listen to or watch Nigerian comedy. And I see Nigerian comedy taking over the world. And I see us young ones doing better too. I have just been recognised as one of the 100 most influential young Africans, alongside big names in the industry from different fields.

How do you think the government can help the industry?

By creating more platforms. I like what Lagos State is doing; every year there is ‘Lagos Laugh’, where a comedian goes home with a million naira. We need to have more of that. People need to understand that comedy is the best medicine to stress. So we need to create more platforms for up and coming comedians. We that have gotten to certain point are trying to carry the young ones along, so I think the government needs to invest more. For example, if you want to run a show and you don’t know who to meet for sponsorship, so we need that sector, people who will say let us see what you have if it is worth investing in. We are going to be dropping money for comedy shows.

Is there any way the digital technology has helped?

It is working now. Before, it was Obano CDs. Before you could watch a comedian, you have to buy a CD. But we have gotten to the world now where you can enjoy everything comedy show on your phone with Wifi. And right now we have online comedians generating money. You have skits with the likes of Lasisi Elenu, Mc Lively, among others, doing comedy online. These comedians do not need to go out there to make money. They can just sit in their homes and make money through their phones. In one minute, you can see what that guy is doing and charge for a show.

The entertainer is however grateful that all that is in the past as he has embarked on two international tours since then.

It was like a dream because I have never seen them do that to any comedian before. But I was scared because with that kind of hype I needed to give my best so they can be super proud of me. The audience were waiting after the introduction to see if what they actually said is what was about to happen.

“I thank God because not only did the audience give a standing ovation, they sprayed me pounds and dollars too. Ali Baba, Okey Bakassi and AY, I go dye, Klint da drunk, and all the comedians present  at the event all said to me after the show,  ‘Kennyblaq, welcome to your success story page 1.’ It is a day I will never forget.”
