    Keshi missing on Eagles bench

Super Eagles chief coach, Stephen Keshi was not on hand to lead the home Eagles against their counterparts from Ghana in yesterday’s international friendly organized to officially declare the Uyo International Stadium open.

The Eagles coach was conspicously missing on the bench when both teams filed out from the dug-out for the pre-match formalities.

SportingLife made attempts to know the reasons for his absence from highly placed officials which naturally drew comments from those that were at the stadium. “My brother let us forget Keshi and concentrate on the match,” an official said.

Interestingly, the coach who was expected to join the team on Tuesday was spotted in the stands. He was casually dressed  and chewing gum, which is his trademark.

According to reports, the Eagles coach must have arrived the Southern state yesterday from Abuja where he had been attending to personal issues. In his place, first assistant coach, Daniel Amokachi took charge. Amokachi has been holding forte since the team reported to camp on Monday. But despite officials dodging questions, there are speculations that all was still not well between Keshi and his employer.

A close aide of the coach sighted by SportingLife however dismissed it.

“There is nothing to worry about. In 2012, if you would remember when the home based team played Egypt in Dubai it was Amokachi that handled the team. It was at that game that Keshi gave Amokachi the mandate to handle the team in his absence especially the home based players. So l do not think it is proper for people to draw insinuations,” said the aide.

He assured that the coach would be in charge for next week’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo in Pointe Noir.

Keshi to continue work without contract

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi is set to continue in his role as Super Eagles coach without a contract until after qualification for AFCON 2015 is secured.

The NFF was ordered by  President Goodluck Jonathan to reinstate Keshi, who was fired after Nigeria picked up their first win against Sudan in the AFCON 2015 qualifiers.

A source close to the coach said it will be tantamount to a disregard for the country’s president if Keshi insists on a contract before the last two qualifiers.

“The status quo remains the same,he won’t ask for a contract until after the qualifiers,” he told SL10.ng.

“Keshi won’t be fair to Mr President if he asks for a contract before working,we are talking about a presidential order here.”

Since after the world Cup Keshi has been working as coach of the Eagles in the 2015 qualifiers without a salary following the expiration of his previous contract.

An attempt to renegotiate a new deal with Keshi was deadlocked as both parties couldn’t agree on wages.

The difference on wages wasn’t resolved until crisis rocked the NFF which lead the Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo to plead with the coach to return and handle the team in their first three games of the AFCON 2015 qualifiers.

West: Keshi should be given long-term contract

With Stephen Keshi returning as the Super Eagles coach against the popular wishes of most Nigerian football fans, former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has asked for Keshi to be given a long term contract. Taribo believes Keshi deserves a longer contract to continue building the team.

Taribo sayid the 52-year-old Keshi should at least get a 2-year contract from the NFF, but says it depends on the NFF and what they want, describing the situation as ‘complex’.

“It depends on the NFF, but I think there’s a complexity in it. But I believe Keshi should be given a long term contract, at least a 2-year contract or more because he has built this team overtime, and let us see how they can rectify every area that needs to be rectified and also help the team to advance,” Taribo said.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winning coach is to return to the helm as the Super Eagles coach after an apparent ‘Presidential order’ from Nigeria’s President and is expected to conclude the AFCON qualifiers against Congo and South Africa.

However, the issue of having Stephen Keshi back as the Super Eagles coach is causing so much controversy amongst the fans, with a good number of them believing the former Togo coach is not good enough for the African champions – but Taribo thinks otherwise.

    • Pinnick says ‘no objection’

The process for the return of Stephen Keshi as Head Coach of the Super Eagles appeared complete on Friday after the NFF Technical Committee accepted the plea for his reconsideration, made by Coach Shaibu Amodu on Monday.

Amodu was announced to take over the senior squad in the early hours of October 16, hours after the team’s 3-1 win over Sudan in Abuja only took it to third place in the Group A table of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

However, in a letter dated October, 27 and addressed to NFF President Amaju Pinnick through the Chairman of NFF Technical Committee, the 56 –year old tactician pleaded that Keshi be reconsidered for the two matches as the time –frame was too short to tinker with the fabric of the squad or start to build a new one altogether.

“As Technical Director of the NFF, I am ready and willing to help build a better relationship among Keshi (with whom I have enjoyed a good working relationship in the past and who is still very close to me), the players and the NFF Technical Committee,” Amodu wrote, inter alia.

Speaking on Friday morning, Chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu, said his committee has accepted the plea and forwarded same to the NFF President.

“We have deliberated on Coach Amodu’s letter, and after speaking to my committee members, we decided to accept it and informed the NFF President of our approval.”

On his part, NFF Pinnick simply said on Friday that he had no objection to the proposal.

“I have never had anything against Keshi as a person. Amodu is someone we all respect and since that is his opinion and the Technical Committee has approved, so be it.

“I have always said that the work of the committees will not be interfered with. We will give the committees the independence to do their work for optimum results. I am also assuring Nigerians at home and abroad that the NFF will give Keshi all the necessary support to successfully prosecute the two very crucial final matches of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series.”

I’m ready to return as Eagles’ coach, says Keshi

Stephen Keshi has said he won’t mind returning as Nigeria’s coach, if he was asked to do so by the  President.

President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered Keshi be reinstated after he was sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

When asked if he was aware of the presidential order yesterday in Abuja, Keshi told AfricanFootball.com: “Well I am just hearing from you.

“But if the President of my country asked me to return, who am I to refuse?”

‘Big Boss’ was at press time locked in a meeting with Sports Minister Tammy Danagogo.

Keshi had earlier refused to comment on speculations he was to return as the country’s coach just weeks after he was eased out with Nigeria in danger of missing out on next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Several top sources have confirmed that Jonathan has ordered Keshi be re-instated and given a contract.

This was after his meeting with NFF president Amaju Pinnick and Chris Giwa at the Aso Rock Villa Wednesday night.

“Keshi is back as Nigeria coach and he will be the one to lead the Super Eagles against Congo and South Africa next month,” one of the top sources informed AfricanFootball.com.
