    • For dumping Eagles during CHAN

A close associate to Super Eagles head coach Stephen Keshi has revealed to SL10.ng the reason the coach is not willing to consider Kelechi Iheanacho for the senior national team.

Our source said Keshi initially had Iheanacho firmly in his plans for the Super Eagles  post World Cup commitment, but his failure to listen to Keshi’s advice angered the Big Boss.

“Nigerians love to talk and make issues out of non issue, was it not Keshi who first called up Iheanacho last year against all odds and complains?” he asked.

“Are you aware that Iheanacho would have gone to the Africa Nations Championship(CHAN) early this year? But he absconded from Camp to push through his move to Man City.

“Keshi adviced him to stay until after CHAN and improve his worth with a super showing at the tournament but he ignored and wasted a good chance, maybe he might have gone to the World Cup.

“He is paying for it now, because the CHAN would have been the best avenue to introduce him to senior football with less pressure, the AFCON 2015 qualifiers is too dicey to gamble on a youngster.”

However, he assured that Keshi still has Iheanacho within his sight but only after qualification for AFCON is guaranteed.

“No sane coach will ignore such a special talent but he isn’t worth the gamble of risking our qualifiers, after that he will be considered.”

    Lawal faults Keshi’s selection policy

Former Nigerian International has joined the train of criticism against Super Eagles Manager, Stephen Keshi, over his selection of players. John Oweri also called on the Big Boss to try other players.

Speaking with Brilla fm, former Roda JC of Holland and former Super Eagles midfielder, Garba Lawal said “It is obvious that we need fresh players in the team because whatever the coach is doing is not going right at the moment”.

He added “I believe things are not going well at this moment, as a coach you need to change, if you keep on insisting for how long will we be watching?” He asked.

Lawal claims it would be difficult to qualify for Morroco 2015, if we are still building a team at this stage, in His words: “I can’t just understand up till now we are still building our team, every time we building we don’t have a team yet”.

The Ex-International is the latest Nigerian to openly criticize Keshi.

    Keshi blasts critics

Out-of-Contract Super Eagles Coach Stephen Keshi has reacted to criticisms about his selection policy and style, saying he’s open to inviting ‘fresh faces, if he sees them.

The former Hawks of Togo Coach has come under intense scrutiny and criticism lately about his invitation policy and how certain players are always left out of the national side. But the ‘Big Boss’ as he’s fondly called has defended himself saying he’s very much open to inviting new players to the team as is being craved for, only if he spots them.

He says:”If I see fresh faces that are good and can bring something tangible to the team, why not, I will invite them.

“It’s their country, they are entitled to play for Nigeria, so why not. If I see and they are willing to play for Nigeria, why not, I will,” he said on Brila FM.

Former footballers have been calling for a change in how players are called to the Super Eagles, with some seeing it as a ‘closed circuit’ where a particular group are always invited irrespective of how they fare at their clubs, even when they hardly get games.

The latest of the former footballers is Garba Lawal, a former Super Eagles midfielder who said “It is obvious that we need fresh players in the team because whatever the coach is doing is not going right at the moment.

“As a coach you need to change, a positive change. But he keeps insisting but for how long,”

A list of invited players for October’s double header AFCON 2015 qualifiers against Sudan is expect out at any moment and Nigerians surely are expectant to see if some ‘fresh faces’ will be called up, most notably Kelechi Iheanacho and IK Uche.

AFCON: Eagles list out next week

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi , has disclosed that the list of invited players for the African Nations Cup qualifiers against Sudan next month will be released next week.

Keshi, who is still without a contract, told africanFootball.com: “It’s still too early to come out with a list, but I am working on it, it should be out by next week.”

However, the coach will not say whether he would make changes to the squad that lost to Congo in Calabar and drew with South Africa in Cape Town.

“Changes? I am not sure, but we will see how it goes. I think what is most important now is to get our qualifier back on track and we are working towards that,” he said.

Keshi noted that his contract talks have stalled because of the protracted leadership tussle in Nigerian football.

“There are no talks now because there is no board in place at the federation, but hopefully we would get over this because we should be taking advantage of the gains from the AFCON and World Cup,” he said.

  • Amokachi, Shorunmu, Keshi scared of sack

Amokachi, Shorunmu, Keshi scared of sack

Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer and former Nigeria international, Ike Shorunmu have said that the recent Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) crisis affected the national team in their games against Congo Brazzaville and South Africa in the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON)’ qualification series.

“My prayer is that this crisis should end fast because the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has a big role to play in any national team,” Shorunmu said in an exclusive chat with SportingLife yesterday.

“At the time we played the first match which we lost in Calabar against Congo, no coach in the team was sure of his job. But we summoned courage to do the work when the Chief Coach (Stephen Keshi) called and told us that  we needed to prosecute the matches against Congo and the second one away to South Africa which ended in a scoreless draw.

“Despite the fact that we were afraid of losing our jobs since we didn’t know our fate as regards our employment, we still handled the team for the two games in the interest of the country.

“Since we don’t have any other country but Nigeria, we chose to prosecute the matches despite the fears in us that we could lose our jobs in the aftermath of the football crisis.”

The goalkeeper coach is however confident that the Eagles would still book a ticket to the 2015 African Cup of Nations, although he admitted that the team needs to beat its next foe Sudan home and away to brighten Nigeria’s chances of qualification for the 2015 AFCON in Morocco.

“Firstly, I want to confess to you that we the coaches were very disappointed with the performance of the team in the two games and the Chief Coach did not hide this fact from the players.

“From the way things are now, the team (Super Eagles) must win the remaining four matches in the group to be sure of qualification. “It is a matter of fact that African teams always up their game when they play against the Super Eagles which always make such matches very difficult, but there is no hiding place for us as a team because the players are aware of the fact that they must win the remaining four games for Nigeria to be in Morocco in January, 2015”.

“But we will see how things turn-out after playing the next two games against Congo (Brazzaville) and I am confident that the players will rise to the billing”, Shorunmu concluded.

  • Eagles’ woes not Keshi’s fault – Babangida

Eagles’ woes not Keshi’s fault – Babangida

Ex-International Tijani Babangida has  thrown his weight behind caretaker Super Eagles boss, Stephen Keshi after he came under heavy criticisms for the poor outing of the team so far in the AFCON qualifiers.

The Super Eagles lost to Congo Brazzaville at home and struggled to a stalemate against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa and while angry words were aimed at the Delta State born coach but Babangida thinks the problem is the NFF’s inability to settle Keshi’s contract.

“The thing is that Keshi is affected by the NFF crisis and his contract is not yet resolved.

“But the player has no excuse as they’ll receive their allowance and at the end of the day most of them are based abroad. So, it’s Keshi that is feeling the heat more and you don’t expect him to pretend all is well without it affecting his job,” the former Ajax winger told Brilafm.

Nigeria will play Sudan in their next two fixtures as they make up grounds on South Africa and Congo Brazzaville who has 4 and 6 points respectively.

  • Keshi must bring fighters into Eagles – Nwanu

Keshi must bring fighters into Eagles – Nwanu

Former Nigeria central defender and Stephen Keshi’s 1994 Super Eagles’ team mate, Chidi Nwanu, has called for a total overhaul of the country’s senior national team “to make it more productive and result-oriented.”

Nwanu, who pastors a church in Belgium, told NationSport yesterday that the attitude of the players needs to change for Nigeria to continue being a major force in African football.

Nwanu, who watched the Eagles versus Congo and South Africa versus Eagles ties on television in Belgium, told NationSport he was disappointed with the performance of the players in the two matches and that it showed clearly and glaringly that the players were no more in the mood to fight for victory.

His words: “It is sad to watch the Super Eagles lose to Congo Brazzaville the way the team lost in Calabar to Congo. It showed that there is a great problem in the team and it is high time something drastic was done. I would recommend a total overhauling of the team for Nigeria’s name not to be put into disrepute.

“The way I see these players now, there is a total decline in their performance compared with when the players fought gallantly in South Africa in 2013 to win the African Cup of Nation. So, there is need for my friend and brother Stephen Keshi to have a second look at this team and do a surgical operation through overhauling of the team.

“Nigeria is a country blessed with lots of talented football players and we need players that are hungry, devoted and dedicated and ready to fight for shirts in the team.

‘Keshi should remember that during our playing days there was great fight for position in the team. Most times I did extra trainings and worked very hard just to ensure I picked the first team shirt ahead of Keshi himself while Keshi too was very resolute to keep the shirt. Same thing happened in other departments of the team during the 1994 team. This was the magic for the successes we recorded during that time.”

The Belgium-based pastor also advised his friend Stephen Keshi to put sentiments aside and call up players that are playing regularly and doing well in their respective clubs abroad.

Reacting on the exclusion of Villarreal of Spain striker Ikechukwu Uche from the team, Nwanu said that Keshi is experienced enough to be able to manage any player with stubborn attitude and that the alleged indiscipline of Ike Uche shouldn’t be the yard stick to ban him from playing for the national team.

“Personal differences should be put aside and the needful should be done,” Nwanu said. “The national team should not be anybody’s palace. A coach should be able to accommodate any player no matter how bad such player’s attitude or character is.”

“For example the media and fans fought for Osaze (Odemwingie) to be at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the player had great impact at the World Cup. So, this is what I am saying. Keshi should try and bring in fighters that want to prove a point.

‘Also, there should be at least two to three capable and quality players fighting for each position in the team. This will definitely improve not only the quality of the team but the performance too,” he advised.

  • Keshi unsure of Eagles future

    Keshi unsure of Eagles future

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi is unsure of his immediate future in charge of the African champions, and was back in the country on Thursday for discussions on continuing in the job.

Keshi’s contract came to an end after the World Cup and has not been renewed by a Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) in a state of turmoil since returning from Brazil.

But he agreed to take charge of the country’s first two matches in the African Nations Cup qualifying campaign – a surprise 3-2 home loss to Congo last Saturday, and a goalless draw with South Africa in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Asked about his future, Keshi told Reuters: “I’m not sure yet. I was just brought in to help manage these two games.

“We have finished them now, so we’ll see what happens. If we (he and the Nigerian federation) come to an agreement, yes I’ll stay. If no, I’ll depart. Let’s see how it turns out when I get home.”

Nigeria next play Sudan twice in a row in October – home and away – in their bid to qualify for next year’s Nations Cup finals in Morocco. They trail behind Congo (six points) and South Africa (four points) in the Group A standings after picking up only one point from their first two games.
