  • Police smash kidnap gang, rescue 2-yr-old

    The  Benue State Police Command has rescued a kidnapped 2-year- old boy, Bemdoo Ajekwe and arrested four suspects involved in the alleged crime.

    Parading the suspects before newsmen at the State Police Command headquarters in Makurdi, Police Commissioner  Ene Okon said the child was kidnapped in Makurdi and taken to Ana, in Abia state, where detectives rescued him.

    The abduction, according to Okon, happened on October 10, when the victim was in company of his brother.

    The police boss said the suspects sent the victim’s elder brother to buy bread across the road, leaving the victim in their care, following which they took him away to Aba.

    Okon said  the suspected kidnappers sold the child to one Unwa Chibueze at the cost of N500,000 in Aba.

    Discreet investigation, according to Okon led to the arrest of Friday Orinya and Sunday Udoh in Makurdi, who led detectives to Aba, to arrest the man who bought the child.

    Okon added that four suspects, Joy Onyeabor, 32; Lucy Doosur, 29; Sunday Udoh, 26 and Friday Orinya, 33, have been arrested and would soon be charge to court.

    It was learnt that the minor has since been reunited with his parents.

    Benue State Police Command has rescued a two-year-old child, Bemdoo Ajekwe, abducted by suspected kidnappers.

    Four suspects have been arrested.

    Parading the suspects before reporters at the command headquarters, Commissioner Ene Okon said the child was kidnapped in Makurdi and taken to Aba in Abia State where the police rescued him.

    He said on October 10, the victim was in company of his brother when the suspects sent the older one to buy bread across the road, leaving the victim in their care, adding that they took him away to Aba.

    Okon said the suspected kidnappers sold the child to Unwa Chibueze at N500,000 in Aba.

    According to him, investigation resulted in the arrest of Friday Orinya and Sunday Udoh in Makurdi, who led them to Aba to arrest the man who bought the child.

    He said four suspects had been arrested and would soon be arraigned.

    The suspects are Joy Onyeabor, 32 years, Lucy Doosur, 29 years, Sunday Udoh, 26 years and Friday Orinya 33 years.

    Bemdoo has since reunited with his parents.

  • Police smash kidnap gang in Imo

    The Imo State Police Command has arrested leader of a notorious kidnap gang, Uchenna Ugwueze.

    The 34-year-old suspect is a native of Obolukwu in Ihioma, Orlu Local Government Area.

    Ugwueze and four others were paraded at the police headquarters by the Commissioner of Police, Dazuki Galadanchi, for allegedly kidnapping Mrs. Evans Ajaps.

    The clampdown and raid on criminal hideouts and flash points followed the murder of a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Sunny Ejiagwu.

    Galadanchi said: “I will like to tell you that the policy of the Federal Government that says “if you see something say something”, and slogan of “change begins with me” is working in Imo State.

    “It is good you know that through our community policing, our men got a tip off on the kidnap of Mrs. Evans Ajaps, they moved into action, and rescued her.

    “The Imo State Police Command renewed its onslaught against crime following the murder of the APC Chairman in Ideato North, Sunday Ejiagwu, and the kidnap of the personal Assistant to Jerry Alagboso of Orsu council.

    “We reorganised and restrategised the security architecture to effect the arrest of the perpetrators of the dastardly acts.

    “Our efforts have paid off, resulting to the arrest of five notorious kidnap kingpins.

    “Suspects have made useful statements and have confessed to the crime. They would be charged to court after investigation.”

    Mrs. Ajaps, from Amadagba Ibiasiegbe in Oru coucil, said her prayer contributed to her rescue.

    Narrating her ordeal, she said: “I was returning from the market and when I got to the gate of my house, the rushed me as I wanted to step into the compound.

    “They were more than four boys; they overpowered me and dragged me into the vehicle while I was praying to God to rescue me. Fortunately, the car broke down on the way and all of them ran away into the bush. They also beat me very well.”

  • Cleric ‘mastermind’ of kidnap gang flees Delta

    An unnamed Asaba-based pastor is on the run for allegedly masterminding the kidnap of a lady, The Nation has learnt.

    The lady, it was learnt, recently received some money from relatives residing overseas to help them do a project.

    The pastor reportedly escaped as policemen closed in on him.

    It was learnt that the church the suspected kidnap kingpin oversees has a branch behind Ibori Golf Club and another near an old generation bank on Nnebisi Road in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

    He is also said to have other branches in the Southeast.

    A police source said another lady, said to be a friend of the victim, had been arrested, while another suspected member of the kidnap ring, who watched the victim in an uncompleted building, was shot dead in a gun duel.

    It was gathered that the victim’s family reported her missing to the police on May 7 at “A” Division in Asaba.

    Her abductors have reportedly demanded N100 million ransom and recharge cards.

    The police, it was learnt, tracked the calls and discovered the identities of the abductors, including the friend of the victim and a member of the pastor’s church, who the victim had allegedly seen off after her visit on May 7.

    The police arrested the suspected woman accomplice who led them to the hoodlums’ hideout.

    It was gathered that the pastor, who got wind of the police advancement into his hideout, reportedly fled to an unknown place.

    Police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the victim was rescued unhurt.

    BENUE State Police Command has busted two kidnap syndicate of eight in Makurdi and Katsina-Ala including a gang of four allegedly led by a woman believed to be an associate of the wanted militant leader, Terwase Agwaza, also known as Gana , who a week ago abducted a Katsina/Ala-based businessman.

    The police operation also led to the arrest of three women whose responsibilities were to provide food for the victims, who was rescued alive. The arrest is coming few days after Governor Samuel Ortom assented to the anti-kidnapping bill, which prescribed death penalty for offenders.

    Parading the suspects at the Command Headquarters in Makurdi, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Bashir Makama, said the businessman was kidnapped alongside his son, who was later released to source N20 million as ransom for his father. Makama said: “We tracked them from intercepts; that case gave us sleepless nights, but we got them in their hideout after a gun battle at Abaji in Katsina/Ala and the notorious criminal, Bem Uga, alias Jugas Jnr , and one Oraondo, alias Bishop , were also nabbed without any ransom paid for the releases of the victim, who was rescued alive.

    “During investigations, we discovered that the lady, who was arrested, had the responsibility of penciling down those to be kidnapped and those to be killed by the gang. “They are all associates of Gana, the wanted militant leader. Among them is the driver of Gana’s wife, Queen. They are all giving us useful information. “Also arrested, after reliable information, is one Victor Ayanngor, who conspired with Ordue Abraham, Kelvin Dankor and Emmanuel Terver to kidnap his girlfriend and collect N200,000 ransom.”

    • Exhume remains of 63-yr-old

    Imo State Police Command yesterday exhumed the remains of a 63-year-old kidnap victim, Madam Ogo Omereji, who was kidnapped, murdered and buried in a shallow grave by her abductors that were incidentally her nephews.

    The family of the victim, who was abducted in her farm on September 26 by a three man kidnap gang, was said to have paid N500, 000 to the kidnappers who eventually killed the victim who may have recognised them.

    Addressing newsmen shortly after the decomposed body was exhumed from the grave in the thick forest, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, said that following the report of the kidnap, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the State Police Command arrested the three suspects, who confessed to have abducted the woman who they subsequently murdered and buried in the forest at Awara in Ohaji/Egbema Council Area of the state.

    He added, “You will recall that the Imo Police Command recently launched Operation Nkpochapu also known as Operation Wipe out criminals in the state. The initiative is already yielding results.

    “Again in our resolve to get close to the public, the Command launched a telephone directory which has been distributed to the people through traditional rulers.”

    The names of the suspects were as Gift Emeka (26), Sunday Uchenna (28) and Emeka Chinedu (27).

    Meanwhile, the leader of the community, Chief Obieze O Obieze said that the parents of the suspects have been banished from the community, which has been thrown into turmoil following the news of the victim’s death.

    Police smash kidnap gang in Delta

    A victim of kidnappers, Mr Obi Okoye, has been rescued by the police in Delta State, a day after he was abducted by five armed hoodlums.

    Okoye was abducted from his home on Ibusa Road, Asaba, the state capital by the gunmen who stormed his residence in a red Audi 80 car and took him to an unknown destination on Saturday.

    Police spokesperson DSP Tina Kalu, who spoke in Asaba yesterday, said the kidnappers were arrested on Sunday around 11. 30am when some policemen from the anti-robbery patrol team attached to Ogwashi-Uku Division rescued the victim.

    Kalu said Okoye was rescued from an uncompleted building behind Aunty Bose Group of Schools in Ogwashi-Uku when the policemen who acted on tip off, stormed the den.

    Also, she said while acting on a tip off on Tuesday, a patrol team from Otu-Jeremi Division arrested Mr Samson Aboy of Ogbe-Ijaw while he was attempting to drive a Toyota Corolla car, parked at Ekrekevei Street, Ekakpamre in Ughelli South Local Council.

    Kalu said the suspect confessed that he was a member of a five-man gang of armed robbers and that his gang snatched the Toyota Corolla from a woman on Airport Road, Warri, in the previous week.

    She said the suspect further confessed that his gang had used the recovered vehicle to rob a man identified as Wafera Arthur Tuwasco and others on Otokutu Road in Ughelli South Local Council on July 18.

    She said effort was in progress to arrest the fleeing kidnappers, adding that a manhunt for the car snatcher’s cohorts who are on the run, had been intensified.
