•Two arrested during battle with police

A man suspected to be a kidnapper, Sunday, alias Dreaded Dagboru, was on Monday killed during a gun battle with the police, Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said yesterday.

He was said to have come to Lagos from Arogbo in Ondo State with his gang fro an operation. Two members of his gang Ebi Gabriel, 29, and Promise Ajele, 19, were arrested.

The body of the girl late Sunday alias Dreaded Dagboru has been deposited in the morgue.

Edgal said the suspects were arrested at their hideout in Imota, Ikorodu.

He said the anti-kidnapping unit was deployed to arrest them, following a tip off.

Edgal said the police learnt that the suspects planned to kidnap personalities in Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

“Consequently, the squad led by the commander, anti-kidnapping, swung into action. Tapping into the intelligence resource of the command, they located them in their hideout in Imota, Ikorodu on December 10.

“When the hoodlums saw the operatives, they opened fire on them and the police replied. During the exchange of fire, one Sunday (surname unknown), alias Dreaded Dagboru, was gunned down. The other two were apprehended,” he said.

Edgal said a locally cut-to-size double barrel pistol, an expended and three live cartridges were recovered from the gang, adding that efforts were being made to arrest those on the run.

  • Why I planned my boss’ kidnap – Suspect

A young man arrested by the police for allegedly kidnapping his boss’ brother, Alvin Onuoha, has said he did it because they sidelined him on a $30,000 deal.

Uchenna Eze, a native of Imo State, was paraded yesterday alongside his alleged accomplice, Vincent Uchenna by Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal.

Edgal said the suspects and four others at large, committed the offence around 5:20pm, on April 6, at Ajah.

He said the suspects bundled Onuoha into a Toyota Camry saloon car, while he was about entering their compound.

Edgal said: “Onuoha was returning from work and on getting to the front of his gate, he was kidnapped by six men operating in a Toyota Camry and a motorcycle. He was taken to an unknown destination.

“Two of the suspects were arrested when they went to collect the N200,000 ransom they demanded for the victim’s release. During interrogation, the mastermind of the kidnapping, Eze Douglas Uchenna, confessed to have stayed with the victim in the same house. “He stated further that the sum of $30,000 was initially demanded as ransom for the release of the victim before they reduced it to N200, 000. Investigation into the matter is ongoing.”

However, Eze said they only wanted to get his money from his boss, who was in the habit of denying him his share of their loots from swindling.

He said: “We were into Yahoo business (internet fraud) and he said whenever we made money, it would be shared on 60/40 percent. I agreed and brought businesses to him but each time money came out, he would deny me my 40 percent.

“The first one we did together, we made $4,300. Instead of giving me my share, he gave me N300, 000. I still stayed with him and kept bringing my jobs to him. I finished another work and handed over the details to him so he can follow up with payment.

“The work paid $30,000 but he kept telling me they haven’t pay. So, one of the guys who used to live with us in my boss’ room called me from Philippines and told me that my work had paid and that I was a rich man now.

“I went to my boss and asked him how far with the payment and he said nothing for me. That I was in place to learn work and not to collect money. They started treating me somehow and since I was afraid for my life, I left the house in October last year. I slept inside tricycle for months until I met my friend, Vincent and he introduced me to his friend, Matthew, who helped us in getting his soldier friend and some other boys to pick the man up.

“I never demanded $30,000. I demanded N200, 000 ransom. I only mentioned the $30,000 so that I’ll know if the man will open up.”

  • Kidnap suspect Evans to be arraigned today

Kidnap suspect Evans to be arraigned today

•Police application stalls judgment in N300m suit

LAGOS STATE will today arraign suspected kidnapper Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans, before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of the High Court in Ikeja.

The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Mr. Adeniji Kazeem will lead the prosecution team, it was learnt yesterday.

This is as the Police yesterday told the Federal High Court in Lagos that it did not authorise any lawyer to represent it in the case filed by Evans.

The suspected kidnapper, through a Lagos lawyer, Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, is praying the court to order his unconditional release from detention or to charge him.

He is claiming N300 million as damages for illegal detention and rights violation.

Justice Abdulazeez Anka had adjourned till yesterday for judgment after parties argued the case and adopted their addresses on August 16.

As the case was called for judgment to be delivered, police counsel Mr. David Igbodo said he filed a fresh application in which the police claimed it was not given a fair hearing.

The lawyer, who is the Commissioner of Police in charge of Legal Section at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, represented the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Police (first and second respondents).

He said the lawyer, Henry Obiazi, who earlier argued the case on behalf of the police, was not instructed to represent the IGP or the police.

In the pending application, which was filed on August 21, the police are praying the court to set aside the “purported” arguments made by Obiazi in the case.

They are also praying the court to set aside the ruling delivered by Justice Anka on August 16 in which he adjourned for judgment.

Igbodo said the judge adjourned the case without hearing from the first and second respondents, claiming they were not served with the suit.

Among the prayers in the application is an order granting leave to the IGP and the Police to file their counter-affidavits to the suit and for the court to consider their responses duly filed and served.

“We believe my Lord understands the principle of fair hearing. We are ready to move the application,” he said.

But, Ogungbeje urged the judge to go ahead and deliver the judgment.

He said the application was a bid by the police to stall the verdict and should, therefore, be refused.

“We have not been served with that application. On August 16, 2017, arguments were taken from all parties and your Lordship graciously reserved today (yesterday) for judgment.

“It is our strong view that this application is calculated to arrest the judgment. The assertion that we refused service of the fresh application cannot be true when judgment has already been reserved,” he said.

Justice Anka said he could not go on with the judgment in the face of the fresh application.

He adjourned further proceedings till September 5.

  • Kidnap suspect alleges police paid ransom for Sergeant’s release

Kidnap suspect alleges police paid ransom for Sergeant’s release

Contrary to their stand on ransom, the police paid N200,000 for the release of a kidnapped sergeant, a suspected kidnapper alleged yesterday.

Aboy Fekun, who was paraded with two others at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, claimed that the Ketu Divisional Police Officer (DPO) paid N200,000 of the N300,000 ransom for the release of Sergeant Bola.

The policewoman’s family, he said, paid the N300,000 balance.

Sergeant Bola was abducted last month at Omu-Ijebu, a community along the Lagos-Ogun boundary.

Fekun, 23, Tola Samuel, 26 and Mimo Blessing, 20, were arrested on Sunday by a combined team of Anti-Kidnapping Squad and Mobile Policemen.

Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspects, said four automatic rifles, one locally made gun, N400,000 cash, three speed boats, several cutlasses and cell phones were recovered from them.

The suspects said they collected N5million ransom from the family of a lawyer, who was kidnapped on his farm at Igbodun in Epe.

Fekun said the police recovered his N400,000 share of the ransom.

He said: “I was recruited into the gang three months ago by Tallest. I knew him from our village in Ondo State. It was Tallest who invited me to Lagos. I arrived in Lagos in January and I was picked up by two members of the gang. They took me in a boat to their camp at Molajoye, in Epe.

“My first operation was the one involving a female sergeant. On that fateful day, we came out from the creek in two speed boats. We laid ambush at the Molajoye bridge. While we were waiting, we saw a vehicle carrying five persons. We pounced on them immediately they got to the bridge. We took all the occupants of the vehicle into our boats. They were three women and two men. We headed to our camp. We kept them for five days. It was while we were at the camp that we discovered that a policewoman was among the five persons we abducted.

“We separated her from the others. We later called the DPO in charge of Ketu that we have abducted one of his policemen. We demanded for the sum of N5 million as ransom from the DPO. We also contacted the family of the policewoman and demanded N5 million from them. But the DPO said he won’t be able to pay N5 million. At the end we collected N200,000 from him and collected an additional N300,000 from the woman’s family.”

Fekun said they kidnaped the lawyer because of his fellow farmers’ protest to the Government House.

He added: “We also took the lawyer to our camp. Initially we demanded N20 milllion from his family members but at the end we settled for N5 million. His family paid the agreed sum. Tallest gave me N400,000 as my own share of the ransom. It is the money the police found on me on the day we were arrested. We were arrested at Epe while on our way to Ijebu, Ogun State. Other gang members fled when they learnt of our arrest.”

Samuel denied being a kidnapper, insisting that he was contracted by Fekun and Mimo to take them to Ijebu.

He said: “They contracted me to take them to Ijebu. I don’t know what they do. I am not their member.”

Corroborating his claim, Fekun said: “We had scheduled to go to Ijebu last Saturday, but he declined; insisting that it was too late. We agreed that he should pick us up around 4:30am on Sunday. As agreed, he arrived on time and we were already on our way when some policemen accosted us. They discovered the money and some phones inside the bag I was carrying.”
