  • Three kidnap suspects arrested in Ekiti

    The war against kidnapping waged by the Ekiti State government in conjunction with security agencies has started yielding fruit with the arrest of two kidnap suspects.

    The wife of the head of the kidnapping syndicate was also arrested. All three are undergoing interrogation.

    Governor Ayo Fayose announced this in a broadcast yesterday night.

    The governor said Olumide (31) and Folorunsho both from Esure-Ekiti were arrested between Ikere and Iju while trying to escape.

    According to him, the wife of the leader of the kidnappers, Austin, who was believed to be preparing food and taking care of the victims, was also arrested.

    A manhunt has been launched for the remaining five kidnappers, who are believed to hail from Benin, Edo State.

    Fayose said three people who accommodated them were also arrested. He said his government is planning to enact a law that will empower the police to arrest landlords of criminals, prosecute them and also demolish the buildings accommodating them.

    The governor advised residents, particularly residents of Atikankan and Bata in Ado-Ekiti, to report any suspicious person to the police.

    He also warned security personnel who have been serving as informants to criminals to desist.

    Eight kidnap suspects arraigned in Awe

    Eight suspects arrested for allegedly kidnapping a business man, Chief Adebowale Omotoso, have been arraigned in court.

    They were arraigned in a magistrate’s court  in Awe, the town where the kidnapping took place on March 11.

    The suspects, seven men and a woman, were charged with  conspiracy, robbery and kidnapping.

    When they were initially arraigned on April 22, the suspects were ordered to be remanded in prison till the next adjourned date, which was yesterday.

    Magistrate N. A. J. Ogunbona directed the police prosecutor to duplicate the case file in the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

    Chief Omotoso, who is the Chairman, Bond Chemicals Ltd, Awe, was kidnapped in his home.

    He was later rescued at Ajia Village by a team of policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Oyo Area Command.

    His freedom came after hours of a gun duel with the suspected kidnappers, according to the Police Commissioner, Muhammed Katsina.

    The legal advice would help determine if the accused have case(s) to answer.

    If they do, they may be moved to a court of higher jurisdiction.

    At the resumed hearing yesterday, the prosecutor told the court that the case file had been duplicated and forwarded to the DPP, adding that he was awaiting response.

    The Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Sergeant Enugwa Anthony, was absent.

    He was said to have been involved in an accident and was discharged from the hospital on Saturday.

    Consequently, the case was adjourned till June 10.

  • Abia police parade nine kidnap suspects, others

    The Abia state police command has paraded several suspected criminals arrested in  different parts of  the state .Their alleged offences range from robbery to kidnapping.

    The  state Commissioner of Police [CP] Joshak Habila said at the parade  that the command was determined to reduce the level of crime rate in the state.

    Habila said that the strategy put in place by the command  to keep criminals at bay  has been yielding fruits with the arrest  of crominals on a regular basis.

    During one of the raids that led to the arrest of the suspects, the police rescued a man from a kidnappers’ den.

    His abductors had been demanding ransom from his family in Port Harcourt.

    The CP said that one Sarah Onuegbu of Nworoma Street, Port Harcourt, Rivers state reported that her brother, Callistus Agunmuo of 48 Ikwere Road, Port Harcourt, called her by  phone that he had been kidnapped by four men.

    Habila said that the kidnappers  asked her to come to his house with the ransom. The police then laid an ambush for the suspects .

    “The duo of Light Nwalozie and Anthony Ukaegbu were arrested, while the victim was rescued without any ransom,” the police commisioner said, adding that his men  also arrested one Ezenwoko Gideon of Ohuru Amangwu who has  allegedly been terrorizing Obingwa and its environs.  Gideon was said to have  been on the wanted list of the police in connection with  several kidnap cases.

    The  command had earlier arrested his gang.“ Gideon ran away and later resurfaced and has been linked with several kidnap cases in recent time within the Obingwa council area of the state,” he said.

    Also paraded were  Chika Azubuine of Akpunekpu village and Victor Young of Obiekwensu village both of whom were described as  ATM robbers.

    The duo were in the process of breaking into an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) of a first generation bank when they were caught.

    Their interrogation led to the arrest of Enyeribe Chidi, Obinna Francis, Iwejuo Chilaka and Izuochi Iwejuo from their hideout in Obiekwensu village.

    The CP said that the items recovered from them included iron bar, three ATM cards, one handset, four SIM cards, one motorcycle, two locally made singe barrel short guns, DVD player, two motorcycles without registration numbers among others.

    The Abia CP said that a woman named Gladys Sunday of Ahiaba Okpuala in Isiala Ngwa North council area reported to the police that her brother, Sampson Uchenna Sunday, a 32 , had been stabbed to death.

    Gladys told the police that her brother was stabbed to death by one Chizaram Amandu aged 40 years from Umuagu Eziala Nsulu of the same council area.

    However, the suspect after allegedly committing the act ran to the police to report that he fought with a man.

    Habila said:“It was found that the suspect stabbed the deceased with a knife at his neck which led to his death”.

    The CP said the police found out that the suspect had gone to the back of the man’s house and when the deceased confronted him he attacked him with the knife and claimed that he was hunting for snails at the back of the dead man’s house.

    He said that on being questioned by the police  the suspect said that he fought with the deceased, but did not know that his action would  lead to his death and regretted his action.

    Habila also paraded a man for allegedly selling his 14 months old son for a sum of N300,000. The buyer is on the run and the boy rescued, according to the police.

    The CP said that the suspect, Maduabuchi George Okey, conspired with one Obinna Erondu to sell his son, Chizoba Maduabuchi.

    The child’s mother raised alarm that her baby was missing and the police swung into action.

    Kidnap and robbery suspects have laid siege to Anambra State.

    In a battle yesterday at Onitsha and Eziowelle between the kidnap suspects and the police, five of the suspects were killed.

    Over N200,000 fake notes were recovered. Also recovered were two Ak-47 rifles, four AK magazines, 117 rounds of ammunition, 30 live cartridges and a pump action gun.

    A Computer Science student of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), formerly Anambra State University (ANSU), Anyaegbunam Anthony, was arrested for robbery.

    Seventeen others were arrested by the police for robbery, rape, giving false information, diversion of goods, murder, among others.

    Briefing reporters at the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at Awkuzu in Oyi Local Government yesterday, Police Commissioner Hosea Karma said since the hoodlums refused to leave the state, police would not allow them to operate.

    One of the killed kidnap suspects was a popular musician, Obinna Offor, who sang the popular Igbo track (Okwu gi bu ebe ano). He was said to have been in kidnapping for a long time.

    One of the kidnap suspects, Arinze Onoja, is helping the police to arrest others.

    Police rescue kids from kidnap suspects

    A woman and two men suspected to be kidnappers have been arrested by the police in Lagos, while allegedly attempting to abduct three children.

    The suspects – Chinava Nancy Okafor, Samsondeen Yusuf and Mufutau Kosoko – were arrested at separate locations.

    Okafor, the police said,  was arrested at Ile-Iwe bus stop, Egbeda, on the outskirts of the city by operatives attached to Ikotun Police Station. Yusufu and Kosoko were held at Adefemi Junction, Ipaja and Idimu on the outskirts of the city.

    They allegedly attempted to kidnap Salawat Sonubi (14), Prosper Kingsley (five), and a yet-to-be-identified child.

    Okafor had been beaten and stripped naked by a mob and was about being burnt when policemen rescued her.

    Chinava confessed to being a kidnapper, saying she was trying to steal the unidentified child when she was caught by residents.

    Yusufu was almost lynched at Ipaja before she was rescued by operatives. Kosoko, who “stole Kingsley from his house”, was apprehended by neighbours.

    Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said: “On May 6, about 3pm, policemen attached to the Ikotun Division responded to a distress call at Ile-Iwe bus stop, Egbeda. The policemen rescued the victim and arrested Chinava Nancy Okafor who had been stripped naked and was about to be lynched by an angry mob. The woman has admitted to being a kidnapper and the case is under investigation at State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Yaba.

    “Also on the same day, at about 6.45am, one Prosper Kingsley (5) of 23, Imosan Compound in Idimu was allegedly abducted by one Mufutau Kosoko (34) at the above address. The victim was rescued by neighbours, while Kosoko was arrested by police operatives at Idimu.

    “On May 5, about 10.30pm, policemen attached to Ipaja Division responded to a distress call at Adefemi Junction, Ipaja and also rescued one Samsondeen Yusuf who was about being lynched by an angry mob for attempting to kidnap one Salawat Sonubi (14) of Adelami Dada Street, Ipaja. The suspect is receiving treatment at the Oke-Odo General Hospital and the SCID is investigating.”

    Meanwhile, a suspected kidnapper who allegedly attempted to abduct a six-year-old boy has been set ablaze at Araromi bus stop, Iyana-Ipaja.

    As at 7pm yesterday, the middle-aged man’s body was still burning as riot policemen around the place could not rescue him.

    Mob burns three kidnap suspects in Ogun

    Three suspected kidnappers were yesterday set ablaze by a mob on Ijoko road in Ijoko- Ota, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun state.

    It was learnt that the suspects, who operated in a taxi, picked up a woman, Oluwole Elizabeth, around Sona Brewery in Sango Ota.

    Instead of going towards Ewekoro, the woman’s destination, the driver drove to Gas Line, Ijoko.

    When she told the driver to stop and he refused, Elizabeth screamed for help and attracted the attention of passers by.

    Some youths gave the taxi a hot chase and forced the driver to stop.

    The suspects tried to escape, but were beaten up and set ablaze.

    Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the suspects were dead when policemen arrived on the scene.

    Adejobi said: “It was a heavy inferno. They put tyres on the suspects and set them ablaze. We have evacuated their ashes. We are still investigating the matter. We condemn jungle justice. People should desist from it.”

    In Abeokuta, the state capital, a woman accused of attempting to kidnap a baby was almost killed on Tuesday.

    Favour Okoye was beaten into unconsciousness by a mob at Totoro. She was rescued by operatives of the Nigeria security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

  • Police parade kidnap suspects

    Two persons suspected to be the mastermind of the kidnapping of three primary school female teachers at Ekenwan village, Edo State, were yesterday paraded by the police command.

    The teachers were released after spending 14 days in captivity.

    One of the suspect is the Chairman of Ekenwan Community Development Association, Morrison Oyibo, who allegedly bought the guns used for the kidnapping.

    The other suspect, Ebimene Puwano, was said to have been arrested when attempting to collect his share of the ransom.

    Oyibo said he bought the guns from 54-year-old Joseph Otor, a blacksmith, gun manufacturer and gun repairer.

    Police Commissioner Foluso Adebanjo said the suspects were arrested immediately the teachers were released.

    He said measures have been put in place to check crimes, adding that the suspects would be charged to court after investigation.

    Two kidnap suspects arrested, five killed in Anambra

    Two of the seven kidnap suspects, who engaged the police in a shoot out on Friday night, were arrested with serious bullet wounds, while the other five were killed, including the ring leader.

    Also, two AK-47 riffles were recovered from the suspects who were cut unawares during the sharing of the five million naira ransom from their victim, 68 year old Anthony Onu, who was kidnapped in his GRA Onitsha residence on 3rd May, 2003.

    Another victim, Joakim Onwukwalu, who was kidnapped at Amichi in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State on the 29th of April was equally rescued by men of the State Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), led by its commander, James Nwafor, a Chief Superintendent of Police same day.

    However, two of the suspects with bullet wounds, who engaged the police in the shoot out, Chinedu Ejike (27) and Chizoba Okolo, (23) both from Eziagulu in Aguleri, Anambra East Council Area, told reporters yesterday that they participated in the operation.

    Infact, Okolo told reporters that he was lured into the action by a person he mentioned as Chukwudi and his in-law’s house was used as the hideout.

    One of the killed suspects, Ajana Chukwuma, was identified as a vigilance group member from Nsugbe Central Security through his identity card, which was equally displayed by the police yesterday.

    Addressing reporters yesterday at the (SARS) office in Awkuzu, where the bodies of the killed suspects were displayed and the arrested ones paraded, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Emeka Chukwuemeka, said the command was still on the watch- out for others.

    He said that the shoot-out with the hoodlums was a prolonged one which he said led to the killing of five of the suspects, while two were arrested with gun shot wounds.

    He, therefore, praised the gallantry of men of the (SARS) and implored them to continue in the same direction with the same spirit, adding “it is part of the war this command is waging against criminals in this state.”

    On the activities of the vigilance groups in Anambra State, Chukwuemeka said the group was going through some measure of reforms, adding that in every 12, there must be Judas.

    He said after the reforms that the bad eggs in the vigilance group would be flushed out.

  • Kidnap suspects’ homes demolished

    The police in Delta State have demolished five homes belonging to kidnap suspects.

    The police paraded eight suspects for crimes ranging from kidnapping, robbery and gun-running.

    Commissioner of Police Ikechukwu Aduba, at a briefing yesterday in Asaba, said the houses were located in Orogun, Ughelli North; Ozoro, Isoko North; Kokori, Ethiope East and Warri, Warri South local governments.

    Aduba said two houses belonging to Kelvin Oniarah, the alleged mastermind of the ambush on prison warders, were destroyed.

    He said 30 incidents of kidnap/robbery were allegedly carried out by Oniarah and his gang.

    Aduba said the houses demolished were used as operational bases and cells of kidnappers.

    The commissioner said the special anti- robbery squad, acting on a tip-off, swooped on a four-man gun-running gang, including a soldier.

    He identified the suspect as Corporal Okulugbo Anthony attached to 34 Artillery Brigade, Obinze, Imo State.

    Items recovered include two prohibited pump action rifles and 25 rounds of live cartridges.
