  • Driver ‘kidnaps’ ex-boss

    •Police smash baby factory gang

The police have arrested a driver, Kelvin Ogia, for allegedly kidnapping his former employer, Asemo Adeola.
Ogia was said to have used a toy gun to kidnap Adeola, forced him to withdraw N1 million from his account and dispossessed him of his Toyota Camry car.
The suspect, who was paraded by the police yesterday, claimed that his friends lured him to carry out the act. He said he was sacked for beating up a colleague.
Ogia said: “I can say that it is greed that made me do this. I was sacked by my ex-boss, Mr. Asemo Adeola. He is a caterer. He sacked me after I beat up a colleague. I was jobless and decided to attend gym. I was in the gym when one man called Andrew Warri came to me that he wants to be my friend.
“We started talking and I told him how I was sacked. He advised me to kidnap my ex-boss as revenge. I initially declined but he deceived me that nothing bad will happen to me. I decided to go along with his plans and gave him my ex-boss’ number.
“We lured him to the University of Lagos. We told him that we had a catering job for him. When he showed up about 4am, we showed him a toy gun. I bought that gun at Ikotun for N400. We took him to my house and beat him up.
“Andrew followed him to Zenith Bank and forced him to withdraw N1million. We released him but made away with his Toyota Camry car.
“The car’s registration number is MUS – 663EG; we took it to Edo State and registered it with a new number GUE- 271LV. I will say it is greed that made me to do this.”
The police are on the trail of his accomplice.
A pastor, Mrs Peace Udoh, and a midwife have been arrested for allegedly attempting to sell a-month-old baby.
The baby’s mother, Goodnews Akpan, 17, and her elder sister, Angelina, were also arrested during a raid of the pastor’s church at Sango, which she allegedly uses as baby factory.
Akpan, who said she became pregnant while staying with her parents in Akwa Ibom State, stated that she relocated to Lagos to live with her elder sister because she didn’t know who impregnated her.
She said: “I was living with my parents in Akwa Ibom State when I got pregnant. I don’t know who got me pregnant. I left my village to stay with my sister in Lagos when I was four months pregnant.
“My sister took me to Mrs Udoh’s church to give birth to the baby. She paid N17,000 for the delivery of the baby. However after one month, we were at home when the police came and arrested us. I don’t have any plans to sell my baby.”
Denying the allegation that she runs a baby factory, Mrs. Udoh said: “I am a nurse and the pastor of Divine Deliverance Church. I don’t know anything about baby factory. I help people give birth and pray for them. I am shocked over this allegation.”
The midwife said she assists the pastor in taking delivery of babies, adding that she has been a midwife for 12 years and works at El -Shadia Hospital in Sango.

Oniba kidnap: Two victims died of bullet wounds, says pathologist

The two persons killed during the kidnap of the Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni, died of bullet wounds, a Lagos High Court has been told.

A consultant pathologist, Dr. Sunday Soyemi, told Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo that autopsy comfirmed that the palace guard, Sunday Okanlawon and a motorcyclist, Joseph Okeke, were shot dead.

A statement by the Ministry of Justice said Soyemi spoke while being led in evidence by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem during the trial of Duba Furejo, Ododowo Isaiah Reuben Anthony and Yerin Fresh for the monarch’s kidnap.

Soyemi, a senior lecturer at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) said he performed the autopsy on the duo.

Soyemi said Okanlawo’s body was identified by his son, Seun, and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), Sergeant Ademo Rahim. Okeke’s body was identified by the IPO.

He said: “The essential findings on Okanlawon were a circular hole on the shoulder at the back, a structure on the bridge of the nose, and a structural defeat on the upper part of the head”.

The base of the skull, he said, showed fracture, adding that there was bleeding into the brain and extensive cerebral laceration.

The autopsy report, he said, attributed Okanlawon’s death to “severe cranial cerebral injury following a penetrative injury to the skull”.

Soyemi said Okeke’s autopsy report showed a destruction of the left femoral vessel.

“There was an entry and exit wound and this is usually caused by bullet wound’’, he added.

Soyemi said the wounds on both bodies were consistent with bullet wounds and gun shot.

He said after the post-mortem, death certificates were issued to the bereaved families.

Under cross examination by the defendants’ lawyer, Soyemi insisted that Okanlawon and Okeke died of bullet wounds.

Sergeant Rahim said during investigation he discovered that Okanlawon was shot in the head.

The defendants are standing trial on an eight-count charge of kidnapping the Iba monarch, conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, robbery, armed robbery and felony.

The charge alleged that Okanlawon and Okeke were murdered by the defendants during the kidnap.

Justice Taiwo adjourned the case to February 3, 10 and 14.

There is panic at Olomoro in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State over the circumstances surrounding the abduction of a Special Assistant (SA) to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Community Development, Chief Avura Awheme, by some gunmen.

Awheme, who is said to be interested in the chairmanship seat of the local government in the next council poll, was reported abducted by gunmen over a week ago while returning from a trip on a property matter.

It was learnt that the abductors had been paid N5 million ransom since last Wednesday.

Despite the payment, the abductors have not released Awheme and his family heard from them at the time of filing this report last night.

“They used Avura’s phone to call and demanded N30 million. The person who picked the call asked for N1 million and cut the line. When another call was established, the demand was negotiated to N5 million. The money was paid about four days ago. But the kidnappers have not released him,” a community source said.

A close associate, who confirmed the development to our reporter but wished not to be named, said the abduction was causing panic among the residents.

The source added: “He (Awheme) had gone to settle a property development disagreement at Olomoro and was returning when he was kidnapped. The matter is seriously heating up Olomoro because our people believe this might have a connection with politics. We believe he ought to have regained his freedom, with all the efforts already made. We just pray they haven’t done anything to him because that may cause a serious crisis in the town.”

Police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the command was working with vigilantes to rescue Awheme.

  • ‘Fight’ over fourth defendant stalls Oniba kidnap trial

‘Fight’ over fourth defendant stalls Oniba kidnap trial

The trial of four suspects in the kidnap of the traditional ruler of Iba Town, Oba Goriola Oseni, failed to commence Friday following a disagreement between two counsel over which of them would represent fourth defendant, Yerin Fresh.

Fresh was arraigned on October 24, before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Lagos State High Court, Igbosere, alongside first defendant Duba Furejo, second defendant Ododowo Isaiah and third defendant Reuben Anthony.

They are standing trial on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, robbery, armed robbery, felony and kidnapping preferred against them by the Lagos State Government.

On October 24, Fresh was represented by Chief Selowei Baidi, who is also the counsel to the first and second defendants, while Mr J. O Egwuaroje was the third defendant’s counsel.

The defendants were remanded in Ikoyi Prison, Lagos following their plea of not guilty.

At the commencement of proceedings yesterday, Mrs E. I. Alakija, the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DDP), announced her appearance for the state, while Baidi and Egwuaroje maintained appearances for the same defendants.

But mild drama began when another lawyer, Mr Anthony Onwueze, also announced appearance for the fourth defendant, Fresh.

Responding to a query from Justice Taiwo, Onwueze explained that he had been commissioned to represent the fourth defendant.

“Prior to the court sitting, we approached Mr Baidi that we have a specific instruction from the fourth defendant to represent him in this matter. But Mr Baidi said his brief has not been perfected. We have a letter from the defendant authorising us to represent him,” Onwueze said.

But Baidi confronted Onwueze with the Rules of Professional Ethics of the profession and insisted that Onwueze had not fulfilled the conditions precedent for over a brief from another lawyer.

Baidi said: “I maintain my stand as the defence counsel for the fourth defendant. I am opposed to him taking over as counsel without compliance with Rule 29 of the Rules of Professional Ethics.”

Following back and fourth arguments prosecution counsel Mrs Alakija observed that a dispute over proper representation in the case could be resolved in accordance with Section 234 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL), 2011, which provides for change of counsel.

She offered that the prosecution was willing to give counsel time to settle the matter.

“We can give counsel time to sort out the issue of representation before the next adjournment. We still have November 11 and 14 dates for trial,” Alakija said.

Third defendant counsel, Egwuaroje also observed that the prosecution witnesses appeared to be absent.

In a bench ruling, Justice Taiwo said: “Both counsel are hereby advised to abide by the professional rules. Mr Onwueze should assist Chief Baidi to recover whatever fees are due to him from the fourth defendant.

“In view of the circumstances, I would suggest that we commence trial on October 11, by which time counsel would have put their house in order. This case is hereby adjourned till November 11. Witnesses must be in court. Counsel must have resolved the issue. No bickering gentlemen.”

The defendants were arraigned on eight count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, robbery, armed robbery , felony and kidnapping preferred against them by the Lagos State Government.

They and others at large were accused of conspiring to commit the alleged offences on July 16, at the traditional ruler’s palace in Iba.

Apart from the kidnap of Oba Yishau Goriola Oseni, they allegedly murdered ‎a security guard, Sunday Eniola Okanlawon and a commercial motorcyclist, Joseph Okeke and also attempted to murder the monarch’s wife, Olori Abosede Oseni.

According to the charge, they also robbed Abosede of her mobile phone while armed with guns.

The state said the offences contravened Sections ‎233, 230, 299, 297 (2) (b) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State C17, Vol 3 Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

  • Kidnap: Lagos schools are safe, lawmaker assures

Despite the recent attack on Lagos State Model College, Igbonla in Epe, where some pupils and teachers were kidnapped, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olanrewaju Ogunyemi, has assured that schools in the state  are safe for learning.

Ogunyemi, Chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Education, said his committee emphasised  security during its oversight visits to some schools, and that the government had done its best on this.

The lawmaker spoke during the presentation of Excellent Leaders award to him in his office by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Christian Coalition Against Corruption.

According to him, in same manner as in Barbinghton Macaulay Secondary School, Ikorodu, the kidnappers that raided Igbo Nla took the pupils and teachers away in daylight and escaped with a boat.

“This was why Governor Akinwunmi Ambode ordered the demolition of shanties around waterways. The government is providing security in the schools and they have done much for the Lagos State Police Command by buying equipment worth billions of naira for them.

“Our schools are safe and they would continue to be safe. Our government will not compromise on that, and we will soon install CCTV in all the schools,” he said.

Ogunyemi added that a bill on kidnapping that is before the Assembly would be given all the necessary attention, saying the crime has almost become a daily occurrence in the state.

He said Lagos would follow the footsteps of Edo State, which imposes capital punishment on kidnappers, seizes their properties and freezes their bank accounts.

The lawmaker said teachers in the state enjoy the same benefits like other civil servants.

He said the state has enough welfare packages for teachers, and that they also extend vehicle loans to them.

Ogunyemi noted that about 1,300 teachers were recently employed for primary schools, adding that plans are underway to hire additional 1,000 teachers for secondary schools.
