  • ‘Why I kidnapped my boss’ brother ’

A SUSPECTED fraudster has said he kidnapped his boss’ brother, Alvin Onuoha, because he was sidelined  in a $30,000 deal.

Uchenna Eze, an indigene of Imo State, was paraded yesterday with his alleged accomplice, Vincent Uchenna, by Lagos State Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal.

Edgal said the suspects and four others at large, committed the offence around 5:20pm, on April 6, in Ajah, Lagos.

He said the suspects bundled Onuoha into a Toyota Camry saloon car, while he was about entering his compound.

The commissioner said: “Onuoha was returning from work and on getting to the gate of his house, he was kidnapped by six men operating in a Toyota Camry and a motorcycle. He was taken to an unknown destination.

“Two of the suspects were arrested when they went to collect the N200,000 ransom they demanded. During interrogation, the mastermind of the kidnapping, Eze Douglas Uchenna, confessed to have stayed with the victim in the same house.

“He said $30,000 was initially demanded as ransom, before they reduced it to N200,000. Investigation into the matter is on.”

Eze said he only wanted to get his money from his boss, who was fond of denying him his share of their loot from swindling.

He said: “We were into Yahoo business (Internet fraud) and he said whenever we made money, it would be shared on 60/40 per cent. I agreed and brought businesses to him, but each time we made money, he would deny me my 40 per cent share.

“The first one we did together,  we made $4,300. Instead of giving me my share, he gave me N300,000. I still stayed with him and kept bringing jobs to him. I finished another work and handed over the details to him so he could follow up with payment.

“We made $30,000 from the job, but he kept telling me they haven’t payed. So, one of the guys who used to live with us in my boss’ room called me from Philippines and told me that he had made money and that he is now a rich man.

“I went to my boss and asked him how far about the payment and he said nothing for me. That I was in the place to learn and not to make money. They started treating me somehow and since I was afraid for my life, I left the house last October. I slept inside tricycle for months until I met my friend, Vincent, and he introduced me to his friend, Matthew, who helped us in getting his soldier-friend and other boys to pick the man up.

“I never demanded $30,000. I demanded N200,000 ransom. I only mentioned  $30,000 so that I’ll know if the man will open up.”

  • How I was kidnapped, chained by Evans for 88 days, abduction victim Dunu tells court

Chief Donatus Dunu, one of the victims of alleged billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike alias Evans, yesterday narrated to an Ikeja Special Offences Court how he was kidnapped and how he escaped from his abductors.

He made the disclosure while he was being led in evidence before Justice Hakeem Oshodi by the Director Public Prosecution (DPP), Ms Titi Shitta-Bey.

Dunu told the court that he spent 88 days in the kidnappers’ den situated in Igando part of Lagos before he escaped.

He said: “I closed from work around 7.30 pm when an SUV double-crossed me in Ilupeju and a man came down from the car and pointed a long gun at me.

“He dragged me down, pushed me into the booth of their car and covered it.

“I found myself in their den, and during an interaction with their chairman, Evans, on the phone, he threatened that it was only God that could save me from their hands, and that no man would ever find me even if they killed me.”

He said one day, after spending 88 days with the kidnappers, he overheard them discussing what should be done to him.

“I overheard one of the kidnappers tell others that the best option was to kill me since my brothers were not acting fast in paying the one million Euro ransom they had demanded.

“But after I prayed in the midnight of the Thursday before the Friday they scheduled to kill me, I wrapped the bedspread in the room where they kept me round the shackles on my legs like the one used to chain mad people, and the padlocks opened up.

“I quietly went out of the room where they kept me. I found the kidnapper guarding me in deep  sleep on a three-seater in the parlour.

“I walked to the kitchen and found the door and the protector open. I eased my way through loose locks and surprisingly found a ladder in the compound that aided my escape into the next compound.

“On the day I jumped into the next compound, which was also a bungalow like the one I was kept in, I sustained injuries.

“In addition, I was looking very unkempt and haggard.”

He said when the couple who lived inside the compound into which he  jumped saw him, they were scared.

He said: “They threatened to call security in the street or the police. I told them to call the police. But just when they were about to do that, electricity went off and they abandoned me and went back to sleep.

“At that time, I realised that the kidnappers had started looking for me, so I hid somewhere in the compound till morning.

“The couple woke up to see me and decided to call the street chairman. But before they could do that, a young man of about 24 years old flogged and chased me out of the compound.

“I got to a nursery school around the kidnappers’ den and the corporate guards there didn’t still believe my story.

“Somehow, another man who listened to my story decided to call my wife and cousin when I gave him their numbers.”

Dunu said it was only his  cousin’s phone that connected and they spoke.

“So the man became convinced  that I was not a thief. He then took me to Idimu Police Station from where they contacted Ilupeju Police Station where my brothers initially logged complaint of my kidnap.

“From there, we went to Anti-cultism and Kidnap in Surulere, and from there to the Lagos State Police Commissioner’s office, from where all us went to the kidnappers’ den.

“Thereafter, I was taken to Police House in Lagos where I saw Evans and the second defendant. Also at Agege police station, I saw the fourth defendant known as Congo, who is from my home town.

“At the meetings, they pleaded that I should forgive them, that it was devil that pushed them.”

During cross examination, the counsel to the 1st, 2nd and 4th defendants, Olukoya Ogungbede, reminded the victim that he wrote in his statement at the police that he was kidnapped in April but told the court that it was in February.

Dunu  responded that it was a mistake.

Justice Oshodi has adjourned the matter till May 11, 2018 for continuation of cross examination.

It was gathered a combined team of police, hunters and residents combed the bush up to the neighbouring Edo and Kogi States for him.

It was not clear if he was rescued or paid his abductors ransom.

Awolu refused to speak to reporters or share his harrowing experiences while in captivity with anybody.

He however was full of praises to God, security agents, local government authority and sympathisers for rescuing him alive.

The Police Area Commander for Akokoland, Razak Rauf, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) stated another kidnapping attempt was foiled by his men along Akunnu axis.

This, according to him, was possible because of new measures introduced by the Command in policing flash points on Akoko roads.

He assured criminals would soon meet their waterloo in Akokoland.

He noted that all hands were on deck to make the area crime-free.

Also, an Assistant Controller of Custom (ACC) attached to Kirikiri Lagos, Dabama Ibrahim, was rescued from kidnappers along Akunu road.

  • Reps to FG: Rescue Dapchi, Chibok Girls

Reps to FG: Rescue Dapchi, Chibok Girls

The House of Representatives Thursday called on the Federal Government to rescue the recently abducted school girls from Government, Girls Technical College, Dapchi, in Yobe State.

The lawmakers arrived at the resolution after a long deliberation on this year’s International Women’s Day, through a motion brought by Chairperson, House Committee on Women Affairs, Hon. Stella Ngwu (PDP Enugu) urging the Federal Government  to secure freedom for all kidnapped school girls in the country.

They also enjoined the authorities to secure the release of the remaining Chibok girls and provide security for school children and women in the country.

Lawmakers like Lynda Ikpeazu, PDP, Anambra; Aisha Dukku, APC, Gombe; Garba Tchede, APC, Taraba; and Gudaji Kazaure, APC, Jigawa all called on the government to provide legal framework for gender parity and support Nigerian women in the quest for gender mainstreaming.

This was as a coalition of Civil Society Organisations including Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution (CDNCD) and Our Mumu Don Do Movement called on the National Assembly to probe the incident.

“As representatives of the people, the time has come for the National Assembly to take every action that can spur the executive and the nation to act.

“The National Assembly is invited to conduct a powerful investigation to unravel whatever conspiracy has been alleged so far, and the circumstances surrounding how over hundred girls will be kidnapped in a ‘war zone’ without them being spotted, or meeting police/ military check point.,” the coalition said in a statement by Ariyo- Dare Aroye and Raphael Adebayo, who represented the CSOs.

The Nigerian Military is conducting Operation Lafiya Dole, in the Morth East with Yobe State being part of the area of strategic operations. But the military was  allegedly withdrawn from Dapchi 21 days, before the school girls’ abduction.

Some of the parents of the 110 students abducted from the Government, Girls Technical College, Dapchi, could not hold back the tears at the gate of the National Assembly yesterday.

The parents, both male and female who wore black shirts with inscription, “We are Dapchi People”, said since the abduction of their children, there has been no meaningful contact by government officials on the issue and prayed the government to help rescue their children.

One of the parents Yahaya Taributu, a male who told The Nation that three of his daughters were taken by the abductors, said the abduction was because of the laxity and incompetence on the part of the security forces.

He said: “Government should go and bring back our daughters” he said, adding that that could not understand why the military was withdrawn from Dapchi 21 days, before the abduction.

“We don’t know why government had to withdraw the army, but we believe that government knows better. We cannot, and will not rest over this matter, until we meet four eyes with our daughters”.

A mother, Aisha Alhaji Bukar, whose daughter one of those captured by the Boko Haram insurgents, could not stop weeping, saying her daughter’s absence has made her a sorrowful mother.

Also, Aisha Kundili Bukar, whose daughter was also kidnapped and Adamu Gashuama, a father, whose daughter was a victim, said there was no visible security in the town.

“Even now, if you go to Dapchi, you can carry mothers, fathers and all their children into captivity unchallenged. Dapchi is not safe,” Aisha Kundili Bukar said.

  • Air Force steps up search for 110 kidnapped girls

Air Force steps up search for 110 kidnapped girls

    Minister: govt ’ll rescue them

The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has deployed more assets in a day and night search for the 110 schoolgirls abducted last week by suspected Boko Haram men.

The Federal Government said yesterday that 110 pupils of the Government Girls’ Science Technical College (GGSTC), Dapchi are unaccounted for.

Dapchi is the headquarters of Bursari Local Government Area of Yobe State. It is about 100 kilometres from Damaturu, the state capital.

The figure is higher than the 105  given by the parents of the pupils at the weekend.

The school was on February 19 attacked by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in military fatigues who took away the girls in 11 trucks.

Minister of Information, Culture and National Orientation Lai Mohammed, gave the latest figure yesterday after a meeting of the Federal Government delegation with Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam and other stakeholders on the Dapchi attack in Damaturu, the state capital.

Minister of Interior Abdulrahman Dambazau and Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole Maj.-Gen. Roger Nicholas were in the team.

A statement by NAF Director of Public Relations and Information Air Vice Marshal Olatokunbo Adesanya, urged Nigerians, including the rural dwellers who might have information that could lead to the location of the girls, to bring such information to the attention of the military authorities.

AVM Adesanya said : “The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed additional air assets, including Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, to the Northeast in a renewed effort at locating the missing Dapchi girls.

“Before now, following confirmation of reports that some of the girls were yet to be accounted for, the NAF had deployed some ISR platforms and helicopters to search for and possibly locate the missing girls as well as the rogue Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs).

“Although these search operations were conducted in a covert manner, for obvious reasons, the efforts did not yield the desired results.

“Accordingly, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, directed the immediate deployment of additional air assets and NAF personnel to the Northeast with the sole mission of conducting day and night searches for the missing girls.

“It is noteworthy that the renewed efforts at locating the girls are being conducted in close liaison with other surface security forces. While the NAF will spare no efforts at possibly locating the girls via its air operations,

“It also seizes this opportunity to call on anyone, especially the locals, who might have any information that could lead to the location of the girls to bring such information forward to NAF authorities or other relevant security agencies.”

Mohammed said efforts were being made to get the girls back. He explained that a situation room to give succor to the traumatized parents and guardians would be created. The deployment of policemen and Civil Defence men in schools has been decided by the government.

“Far reaching decision were taken here today: one, is that henceforth, the police and the Civil Defence corps will ensure that their presence is strong in every school to serve as a deterrent to the insurgents. Secondly, the security agencies and outfits are working together and synergising to ensure that these girls are recovered as fast as possible.

“We are working on very important things that would not be very impudent to talk about but we want to assure Nigerians that no stone will be left unturned in our determination to rescue these girls,” he said.

On how the figure of the abducted pupils was arrived at, Mohammed said it was based on the briefings from the principal of the college, Hajia Adama Abdulkarim, and the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Mohammed Lamin, that 906 students – out of who 110 have not been accounted

for – were in the school on the day of the attack.

He said the security agencies were working on many leads regarding the whereabouts of the girls.

‘’This is the second time in four days that a Federal Government delegation would visit Yobe State since the unfortunate incident. This is a measure of the seriousness with which we are addressing the issue. The security forces are leaving no stone unturned in their search for the girls.

‘’We are back here in Yobe as part of efforts to provide some succor to the parents of the girls, to let them know that they are not alone and also to reassure them that we will not rest until we have found the girls. We will carry the parents along on the efforts we are making,’’ Mohammed said.

Mohammed explained that his statement in Dapchi last Thursday that “Boko Haram is  looking for oxygen to breath” is at aimed at  like trivialising the abduction but rather to underscore the major success the government has achieved against the insurgents in the last few years.

He said: “If you look at what this government has done in containing the Boko Haram insurgency, you will agree with me that this is actually looking for attention. It is actually more like oxygen. Just one life is very important. We are not making it look trivial, but we are just saying that we must remain focused. It is a very huge task and we want to assure Nigerians that the days of Boko Haram is almost at an end.”

Apart from the governor, members of the state Executive Council, the principal and vice principal of the school, representatives of the parents of the missing girls and security

    agencies attended the meeting.

Mohammed said “No stone will be left unturned in our determination to rescue these girls,” the minister said.

He said the federal and state governments as well as parents would collaborate with security agents to rescue the students.

The minister reiterated that the insurgents were being contained and now looking for soft targets.

“Government will remain focused and resolute in the fight against insurgency to rescue the students and every Nigerian in their custody.”

Dambazau said the delegation embarked on the trip to get the facts right ‘’so that the approach to the solution can be correct’’.

‘’We must get back the girls and also ensure that this does not happen again,’’ he said.

A relative of the victims, who pleaded for anonymity, said they were abducted about 6.30 pm on Monday.
